Christian Humility and Christ’s Humility
Therefore if there is any encouragement in Christ, if there is any comfort of love, if there is any fellowship of the Spirit, if any inner affections and compassions, | Therefore if there is any encouragement in Christ, if there is any comfort of love, if there is any fellowship of the Spirit, if any inner affections and compassions, |
fulfill my joy in order that you may think alike, having the same love, united in spirit, with a single perspective. | fulfill my joy in order that you may think alike, having the same love, united in spirit, with a single perspective. |
Do nothing from strife nor from conceit, but with humility of mind consider one another as more important than yourselves; | Do nothing from strife nor from conceit, but with humility of mind consider one another as more important than yourselves; |
don’t look out for your own personal interests, but [also] for the things of others. | don’t look out for your own personal interests, but also for the things of others. |
Think this thing in you which was also in Christ Jesus, | For think this thing in you which was also in Christ Jesus, |
who, although he existed in the form of God, didn’t consider it robbery to be equal with God, | who, although he existed in the form of God, didn’t consider it robbery to be equal with God, |
but he emptied himself after taking the form of a slave and being made in the likeness of men, and being found in the appearance of a man | but he emptied himself after taking the form of a slave and being made in the likeness of men, |
he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. | and being found in the appearance of a man he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. |
For this reason also, God highly exalted him, and granted on him the name which is above every name, | For this reason also, God highly exalted him, and granted on him the name which is above every name, |
so that at the name of Jesus every knee might bow, of those celestial, and terrestrial, and subterranean, | so that at the name of Jesus every knee might bow, of those celestial, and terrestrial, and subterranean, |
and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of Father God. | and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of Father God. |
Shining as Lights in the World
So then, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed, not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence, cultivate salvation for yourselves with fear and trembling; | So then, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed, not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence, cultivate salvation for yourselves with fear and trembling; |
for it is God who is working in you, both to want and to work for his good pleasure. | for it is God who is working in you, both to want and to work for his good pleasure. |
Do all things without grumbling and disputing; | Do all things without grumbling and disputing; |
in order that you may become blameless and innocent, children of God, blameless in the midst of a crooked and perverted generation, among whom you appear as lights in the world, | in order that you may become blameless and innocent, children of God, blameless in the midst of a crooked and perverted generation, among whom you appear as lights in the world, |
holding the word of life, for my boasting in the day of Christ because I didn’t run in vain nor labour in vain. | holding the word of life, for my boasting in the day of Christ because I didn’t run in vain nor labour in vain. |
But even if I am being poured out as a libation upon the sacrifice and service of your faith, I rejoice and co-rejoice with you all. | But even if I am being poured out as a libation upon the sacrifice and service of your faith, I rejoice and co-rejoice with you all. |
For the same reason, keep rejoicing and co-rejoice with me. | For the same reason, keep rejoicing and co-rejoice with me. |
Timothy and Epaphroditus
But I keep hoping in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you soon, in order that I also may be encouraged when I know about your situation. | But I keep hoping in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you soon, in order that I also may be encouraged when I know about your situation. |
For I have no one else of similar spirit who will genuinely be concerned for your situation. | For I have no one else of similar spirit who will genuinely be concerned for your situation. |
For they all seek their own things, not those of Jesus Christ. | For they all seek their own things, not those of Christ Jesus. |
But you know of his proven character, that he served with me in the gospel like a child serving his father. | But you know of his proven character, that he served with me in the gospel like a child serving his father. |
Therefore I hope to send him immediately, as soon as I look at how things go with me; | Therefore I hope to send him immediately, as soon as I look at how things go with me; |
and I trust in the Lord that I myself also will be coming shortly. | and I trust in the Lord that I myself also will be coming shortly. |
But I thought it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother and co-worker and co-soldier, who is also your messenger and minister to my need; | But I thought it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother and co-worker and co-soldier, who is also your messenger and minister to my need; |
because he was longing for you all and was distressed, because you had heard that he was sick. | because he was longing for you all and was distressed, because you had heard that he was sick. |
For indeed he was sick almost to death, but God had mercy on him, and not only on him but also on me, so that I would not have sorrow upon sorrow. | For indeed he was sick almost to death, but God had mercy on him, and not only on him but also on me, so that I would not have sorrow upon sorrow. |
Therefore I sent him all the more eagerly so that after seeing him again you may rejoice and I may be less sorrowful. | Therefore I sent him all the more eagerly so that after seeing him again you may rejoice and I may be less sorrowful. |
Receive him therefore in the Lord with all joy, and hold such men with honour; | Receive him therefore in the Lord with all joy, and hold such men with honour; |
because he came close to death for the work of Christ, risking his life in order that he should complete what was deficient in your service to me. | because he came close to death for the work of Christ, risking his life in order that he should complete what was deficient in your service to me. |
