Sennacherib Invades Judah

1 After these things, and the establishment of it, Sennacherib king of Assyria came, and entered into Judah, and encamped against the fenced cities, and thought to win them for himself.

1 And after these things and this faithful dealing, came Sennacherim king of the Assyrians, and he came to Jouda, and encamped against the fortified cities, and intended to take them for himself. 1 And after these things and this faithful dealing, came Sennacherim king of the Assyrians, and he came to Jouda, and encamped against the fortified cities, and intended to take them for himself.

2 And when Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib came, and that he was purposed to fight against Jerusalem,

2 And Ezekias saw that Sennacherim came, and that his face was set to fight against Jerusalem. 2 And Ezekias saw that Sennacherim came, and that his face was set to fight against Jerusalem.

3 He took counsel with his princes and his mighty men to stop the waters of the fountains which were outside the city; and they helped him.

3 And he took counsel with his elders and his mighty men to stop the wells of water which were outside the city; and they helped him. 3 And he took counsel with his elders and his mighty men to stop the wells of water which were outside the city; and they helped him.

4 So there was gathered much people together, who stopped all the fountains, and the brook that ran through the midst of the land, saying, Why should the kings of Assyria come, and find much water?

4 And he collected many people, and stopped the wells of water, and the river that flowed through the city, saying, Lest the king of Assyria come, and find much water, and strengthen himself. 4 And he collected many people, and stopped the wells of water, and the river that flowed through the city, saying, Lest the king of Assyria come, and find much water, and strengthen himself.

5 Also he strengthened himself, and built up all the wall that was broken, and raised it up to the towers, and another wall without, and repaired Millo in the city of David, and made darts and shields in abundance.

5 And Ezekias strengthened himself, and built all the wall that had been pulled down, and the towers, and another wall in front without, and fortified the strong place of the city of David, and prepared arms in abundance. 5 And Ezekias strengthened himself, and built all the wall that had been pulled down, and the towers, and another wall in front without, and fortified the strong place of the city of David, and prepared arms in abundance.

6 And he set captains of war over the people, and gathered them together to him in the street of the gate of the city, and spoke comfortably to them, saying,

6 And he appointed captains of war over the people, and they were gathered to meet him to the open place of the gate of the valley, and he encouraged them, saying, 6 And he appointed captains of war over the people, and they were gathered to meet him to the open place of the gate of the valley, and he encouraged them, saying,

7 Be strong and courageous, don’t be afraid nor dismayed for the king of Assyria, nor for all the multitude that is with him; for there be more with us than with him.

7 Be strong and courageous, and don’t fear, neither be dismayed before the King of Assyria, and before all the nation that is with him; for there are more with us than with him. 7 Be strong and courageous, and don’t fear, neither be dismayed before the King of Assyria, and before all the nation that is with him; for there are more with us than with him.

8 With him is an arm of flesh; but with us is Yahweh our Elohim to help us, and to fight our battles. And the people rested themselves on the words of Hezekiah king of Judah.

8 With him are arms of flesh; but with us is our Lord God to save us, and to fight our battle. And the people were encouraged at the words of Ezekias king of Jouda. 8 With him are arms of flesh; but with us is our Lord God to save us, and to fight our battle. And the people were encouraged at the words of Ezekias king of Jouda.

Sennacherib Undermines Hezekiah

9 After this did Sennacherib king of Assyria send his servants to Jerusalem, (but he himself laid siege against Lachish, and all his power with him,) unto Hezekiah king of Judah, and to all Judah who were at Jerusalem, saying,

9 And afterward Sennacherim king of the Assyrians sent his servants to Jerusalem; and he went himself against Lachis, and all his army with him, and sent to Ezekias king of Jouda, and to all Jouda that was in Jerusalem, saying, 9 And afterward Sennacherim king of the Assyrians sent his servants to Jerusalem; and he went himself against Lachis, and all his army with him, and sent to Ezekias king of Jouda, and to all Jouda that was in Jerusalem, saying,

10 Thus says Sennacherib king of Assyria, Whereon do you trust, that you abide in the siege in Jerusalem?

10 οὕτως λέγει Σενναχηρὶμ βασιλεὺς Ἀσσυρίων ἐπὶ τίνι ὑμεῖς πεποίθατε καὶ κάθησθε ἐν τῇ περιοχῇ ἐν Ἱερουσαλήμ; 10 οὕτως λέγει Σενναχηρὶμ βασιλεὺς Ἀσσυρίων· ἐπὶ τί ὑμεῖς πεποίθατε καὶ καθήσεσθε ἐν τῇ περιοχῇ ἐν Ἱερουσαλήμ;
10 Thus says Sennacherim king of the Assyrians, On what do you trust, that you will remain in the siege in Jerusalem? 10 Thus says Sennacherim king of the Assyrians, On what do you trust, that you will remain in the siege in Jerusalem?

11 Doesn’t Hezekiah persuade you to give over yourselves to die by famine and by thirst, saying, Yahweh our Elohim shall deliver us out of the hand of the king of Assyria?

11 οὐχὶ Ἐζεκίας ἀπατᾷ ὑμᾶς τοῦ παραδοῦναι ὑμᾶς εἰς θάνατον καὶ εἰς λιμὸν καὶ εἰς δίψαν λέγων κύριος θεὸς ἡμῶν σώσει ἡμᾶς ἐκ χειρὸς βασιλέως Ἀσσούρ; 11 οὐχὶ Ἐζεκίας ἀπατᾷ ὑμᾶς τοῦ παραδοῦναι ὑμᾶς εἰς θάνατον καὶ εἰς λιμὸν καὶ εἰς δίψαν λέγων· Κύριος Θεὸς ἡμῶν σώσει ἡμᾶς ἐκ χειρὸς βασιλέως Ἀσσούρ;
11 Does not Ezekias deceive you, to deliver you to death and famine and thirst, saying, The Lord our God will deliver us out of the hand of the king of Assyria? 11 Does not Ezekias deceive you, to deliver you to death and famine and thirst, saying, The Lord our God will deliver us out of the hand of the king of Assyria?

12 Has not the same Hezekiah taken away his high places and his altars, and commanded Judah and Jerusalem, saying, You shall worship before one altar, and burn incense on it?

12 οὐχ οὗτός ἐστιν Ἐζεκίας, ὃς περιεῖλεν τὰ θυσιαστήρια αὐτοῦ καὶ τὰ ὑψηλὰ αὐτοῦ καὶ εἶπεν τῷ Ἰούδα καὶ τοῖς κατοικοῦσιν Ἱερουσαλὴμ λέγων κατέναντι τοῦ θυσιαστηρίου τούτου προσκυνήσετε καὶ ἐπ’ αὐτῷ θυμιάσετε. 12 οὐχ οὗτός ἐστιν Ἐζεκίας, ὃς περιεῖλε τὰ θυσιαστήρια αὐτοῦ καὶ τὰ ὑψηλὰ αὐτοῦ καὶ εἶπε τῷ Ἰούδᾳ καὶ τοῖς κατοικοῦσιν ἐν Ἱερουσαλὴμ λέγων· κατέναντι τοῦ θυσιαστηρίου τούτου προσκυνήσετε καὶ ἐπ’ αὐτῷ θυμιάσατε;
12 Is not this Ezekias who has taken down his altars and his high places and has spoken to Jouda and the dwellers in Jerusalem, saying, You shall worship before this altar and burn incense on it? 12 Is not this Ezekias who has taken down his altars and his high places and has spoken to Jouda and the dwellers in Jerusalem, saying, You shall worship before this altar and burn incense on it?

13 Know you not what I and my fathers have done to all the people of other lands? were the gods of the nations of those lands any ways able to deliver their lands out of my hand?

13 οὐ γνώσεσθε τι ἐποίησα ἐγὼ καὶ οἱ πατέρες μου πᾶσι τοῖς λαοῖς τῶν χωρῶν;
μὴ δυνάμενοι ἠδύναντο θεοὶ τῶν ἐθνῶν πάσης τῆς γῆς σῶσαι τὸν λαὸν αὐτῶν ἐκ χειρός μου;
13 οὐ γνώσεσθε ὅτι ἐποίησα ἐγὼ καὶ οἱ πατέρες μου πᾶσι τοῖς λαοῖς τῶν χωρῶν;
μὴ δυνάμενοι ἠδύναντο θεοὶ τῶν ἐθνῶν πάσης τῆς γῆς σῶσαι τὸν λαὸν αὐτῶν ἐκ χειρός μου;
13 Know you not what I and my fathers have done to all the nations of the countries? Could the gods of the nations of all the earth at all rescue their people out of my hand? 13 Know you not what I and my fathers have done to all the nations of the countries? Could the gods of the nations of all the earth at all rescue their people out of my hand?

14 Who was there among all the gods of those nations that my fathers utterly destroyed, that could deliver his people out of my hand, that your God should be able to deliver you out of my hand?

14 τίς ἐν πᾶσι τοῖς θεοῖς τῶν ἐθνῶν τούτων, οὓς ἐξωλέθρευσαν οἱ πατέρες μου;
μὴ ἠδύναντο σῶσαι τὸν λαὸν αὐτῶν ἐκ χειρός, μου ὅτι δυνήσεται θεὸς ὑμῶν σῶσαι ὑμᾶς ἐκ χειρός μου;
14 τίς ἐν πᾶσι τοῖς θεοῖς τῶν ἐθνῶν τούτων, οὓς ἐξωλόθρευσαν οἱ πατέρες μου;
μὴ ἐδύναντο σῶσαι τὸν λαὸν αὐτῶν ἐκ χειρός μου, ὅτι δυνήσεται Θεὸς ὑμῶν σῶσαι ὑμᾶς ἐκ χειρός μου;
14 Who is there among all the gods of those nations whom my fathers utterly destroyed, worthy of trust? Could they deliver their people out of my hand, that your God should deliver you out of my hand? 14 Who is there among all the gods of those nations whom my fathers utterly destroyed, worthy of trust? Could they deliver their people out of my hand, that your God should deliver you out of my hand?

15 Now therefore don’t let Hezekiah deceive you, nor persuade you on this manner, neither yet believe him; for no god of any nation or kingdom was able to deliver his people out of my hand, and out of the hand of my fathers: how much less shall your God deliver you out of my hand?

15 Now then, don’t let Ezekias deceive you, and let him not make you thus confident, and don’t believe him; for no god of any kingdom or nation is at all able to deliver his people out of my hand, or the hand of my fathers; therefore your God shall not deliver you out of my hand. 15 Now then, don’t let Ezekias deceive you, and let him not make you thus confident, and don’t believe him; for no god of any kingdom or nation is at all able to deliver his people out of my hand, or the hand of my fathers; therefore your God shall not deliver you out of my hand.

16 And his servants spoke yet more against Yahweh Elohim, and against his servant Hezekiah.

16 And his servants continued to speak against the Lord God, and against his servant Ezekias. 16 And his servants continued to speak against the Lord God, and against his servant Ezekias.

17 He wrote also letters to rail on Yahweh Elohim of Israēl, and to speak against him, saying, As the gods of the nations of other lands haven’t delivered their people out of my hand, so shall not the God of Hezekiah deliver his people out of my hand.

17 And he wrote a letter to reproach the Lord God of Israēl, and spoke concerning him, saying, As the gods of the nations of the earth haven’t delivered their people out of my hand, so the God of Ezekias shall by no means deliver his people out of my hand. 17 And he wrote a letter to reproach the Lord God of Israēl, and spoke concerning him, saying, As the gods of the nations of the earth haven’t delivered their people out of my hand, so the God of Ezekias shall by no means deliver his people out of my hand.

18 Then they cried with a loud voice in the Jews’ speech to the people of Jerusalem who were on the wall, to affright them, and to trouble them; that they might take the city.

18 And he cried with a loud voice in the Joudean language to the people of Jerusalem on the wall, calling them to assist them, and pull down the walls, that they might take the city. 18 And he cried with a loud voice in the Joudean language to the people of Jerusalem on the wall, calling them to assist them, and pull down the walls, that they might take the city.

19 And they spoke against the God of Jerusalem, as against the gods of the people of the earth, which were the work of the hands of man.

19 And he spoke against the God of Jerusalem, even as against the gods of the nations of the earth, the works of the hands of men. 19 And he spoke against the God of Jerusalem, even as against the gods of the nations of the earth, the works of the hands of men.

Hezekiah’s Prayer Is Answered

20 And for this cause Hezekiah the king, and the prophet Isaiah the son of Amoz, prayed and cried to heaven.

20 And king Ezekias and Esaias the prophet the son of Amos prayed concerning these things, and they cried to heaven. 20 And king Ezekias and Esaias the prophet the son of Amos prayed concerning these things, and they cried to heaven.

21 And Yahweh sent an angel, which cut off all the mighty men of valour, and the leaders and captains in the camp of the king of Assyria. So he returned with shame of face to his own land. And when he came into the house of his god, they who came forth of his own bowels killed him there with the sword.

21 And the Lord sent an angel, and he destroyed every mighty man and warrior, and leader and captain in the camp of the king of Assyria; and he returned with shame of face to his own land and came into the house of his god; and some of those who came out of his bowels killed him with the sword. 21 And the Lord sent an angel, and he destroyed every mighty man and warrior, and leader and captain in the camp of the king of Assyria; and he returned with shame of face to his own land and came into the house of his god; and some of those who came out of his bowels killed him with the sword.

22 Thus Yahweh saved Hezekiah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem from the hand of Sennacherib the king of Assyria, and from the hand of all other, and guided them on every side.

22 So the Lord delivered Ezekias and the dwellers in Jerusalem out of the hand of Sennacherim King of Assyria, and out of the hand of all his enemies, and gave them rest round about. 22 So the Lord delivered Ezekias and the dwellers in Jerusalem out of the hand of Sennacherim King of Assyria, and out of the hand of all his enemies, and gave them rest round about.

23 And many brought gifts to Yahweh to Jerusalem, and presents to Hezekiah king of Judah; so that he was magnified in the sight of all nations from then on.

23 And many brought gifts to the Lord to Jerusalem, and presents to Ezekias king of Jouda; and he was exalted in the eyes of all the nations after these things. 23 And many brought gifts to the Lord to Jerusalem, and presents to Ezekias king of Jouda; and he was exalted in the eyes of all the nations after these things.

24 In those days Hezekiah was sick to the death, and prayed to Yahweh; and he spoke to him, and he gave him a sign.

24 In those days Ezekias was sick even to death, and prayed to the Lord; and he listened to him, and gave him a sign. 24 In those days Ezekias was sick even to death, and prayed to the Lord; and he listened to him, and gave him a sign.

25 But Hezekiah didn’t render again according to the benefit done to him; for his heart was lifted up; therefore there was wrath on him, and on Judah and Jerusalem.

25 But Ezekias didn’t recompense the Lord according to the return which he made him, but his heart was lifted up; and wrath came on him, and on Jouda and Jerusalem. 25 But Ezekias didn’t recompense the Lord according to the return which he made him, but his heart was lifted up; and wrath came on him, and on Jouda and Jerusalem.

26 Notwithstanding Hezekiah humbled himself for the pride of his heart, both he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the wrath of Yahweh didn’t come on them in the days of Hezekiah.

26 And Ezekias humbled himself after the exaltation of his heart, he and the dwellers in Jerusalem; and the wrath of the Lord didn’t come on them in the days of Ezekias. 26 And Ezekias humbled himself after the exaltation of his heart, he and the dwellers in Jerusalem; and the wrath of the Lord didn’t come on them in the days of Ezekias.

27 And Hezekiah had exceeding much riches and honour; and he made himself treasuries for silver, and for gold, and for precious stones, and for spices, and for shields, and for all manner of pleasant jewels;

27 And Ezekias had wealth and very great glory; and he made for himself treasuries of gold, and silver, and precious stones, also for spices, and stores for arms, and for precious vessels; 27 And Ezekias had wealth and very great glory; and he made for himself treasuries of gold, and silver, and precious stones, also for spices, and stores for arms, and for precious vessels;
