Census Taken
1And again the anger of Yahweh was kindled against Israēl, and he moved David against them to say, Go, number Israēl and Judah.
1And the Lord caused his anger to burn forth again in Israēl, and Satan stirred up David against them, saying, Go, number Israēl and Jouda. | 1And the Lord caused his anger to burn forth again in Israēl, and Satan stirred up David against them, saying, Go, number Israēl and Jouda. |
2For the king said to Jōab the captain of the army, which was with him, Go now through all the tribes of Israēl, from Dan even to Beer-sheba, and number you the people, that I may know the number of the people.
2And the king said to Jōab commander of the army, who was with him, Go now through all the tribes of Israēl and Jouda, from Dan even to Bērsabee, and number the people, and I will know the number of the people. | 2And the king said to Jōab commander of the army, who was with him, Go now through all the tribes of Israēl and Jouda, from Dan even to Bērsabee, and number the people, and I will know the number of the people. |
3And Jōab said to the king, Now Yahweh your Elohim add to the people, how many they ever be, 100-fold, and that the eyes of my lord the king may see it; but why does my lord the king delight in this thing?
3And Jōab said to the king, Now may the Lord add to the people 100-fold as many as they are, and may the eyes of my lord the king see it; but why does my lord the king desire this thing? | 3And Jōab said to the king, Now may the Lord add to the people 100-fold as many as they are, and may the eyes of my lord the king see it; but why does my lord the king desire this thing? |
4Notwithstanding the king’s word prevailed against Jōab, and against the captains of the army. And Jōab and the captains of the army went out from the presence of the king, to number the people of Israēl.

4Nevertheless the word of the king prevailed against Jōab an the captains of the army: And Jōab and the captains of the army went out before the king to number the people of Israēl. | 4Nevertheless the word of the king prevailed against Jōab an the captains of the army: And Jōab and the captains of the army went out before the king to number the people of Israēl. |
5And they passed over Jordan, and camped in Aroer, on the right side of the city that lies in the midst of the river of Gad, and toward Jazer.
5And they went over Jordan, and encamped in Aroer, on the right of the city which is in the midst of the valley of Gad and Eliezer. | 5And they went over Jordan, and encamped in Aroer, on the right of the city which is in the midst of the valley of Gad and Eliezer. |
Then they came to Gilead, and to the land of Tahtim-hodshi; and they came to Dan-jaan, and about to Zidon,
6And they came to Galaad, and into the land of Thabason, which is Adasai, and they came to Danidan and Udan, and surrounded Sidon. | 6And they came to Galaad, and into the land of Thabason, which is Adasai, and they came to Danidan and Udan, and surrounded Sidon. |
7And came to the strong hold of Tyre, and to all the cities of the Hibites, and of the Canaanites; and they went out to the south of Judah, even to Beer-sheba.
7And they came to Mapsar of Tyre, and to all the cities of the Evite and the Chananite; and they came by the South of Jouda to Bērsabee. | 7And they came to Mapsar of Tyre, and to all the cities of the Evite and the Chananite; and they came by the South of Jouda to Bērsabee. |
8So when they had gone through all the land, they came to Jerusalem at the end of nine months and 20 days.
8And they surrounded the whole land; and they arrived at Jerusalem at the end of nine months and twenty days. | 8And they surrounded the whole land; and they arrived at Jerusalem at the end of nine months and twenty days. |
9And Jōab gave up the sum of the number of the people to the king; and there were in Israēl 800,000 valiant men who drew the sword; and the men of Judah were 500,000 men.
9And Jōab gave in the number of the census of the people to the king; and Israēl consisted of 800,000 men of might that drew sword; and the men of Jouda, 500,000 fighting men. | 9And Jōab gave in the number of the census of the people to the king; and Israēl consisted of 800,000 men of might that drew sword; and the men of Jouda, 500,000 fighting men. |
10And David’s heart smote him after that he had numbered the people. And David said to Yahweh, I have sinned greatly in that I have done; and now, I beseech you, Oh Yahweh, take away the iniquity of your servant; for I have done very foolishly.
10And the heart of David smote him after he had numbered the people; and David said to the Lord, I have sinned grievously, Oh Lord, in what I have now done: remove, please, the iniquity of your servant, for I have been exceedingly foolish. | 10And the heart of David smote him after he had numbered the people; and David said to the Lord, I have sinned grievously, Oh Lord, in what I have now done: remove, please, the iniquity of your servant, for I have been exceedingly foolish. |
11For when David was up in the morning, the word of Yahweh came to the prophet Gad, David’s seer, saying,
11καὶ

11And David rose early in the morning, and the word of the Lord came to the prophet Gad, the seer, saying, Go, and speak to David, saying, | 11And David rose early in the morning, and the word of the Lord came to the prophet Gad, the seer, saying, Go, and speak to David, saying, |
12Go and say to David, Thus says Yahweh, I offer you three things; choose you one of them, that I may do it to you.
12Thus says the Lord, I bring one of three things on you: now choose you one of them, and I will do it to you. | 12Thus says the Lord, I bring one of three things on you: now choose you one of them, and I will do it to you. |
13So Gad came to David, and told him, and said to him, Shall seven years of famine come to you in your land? or will you flee three months before your enemies, while they pursue you? or that there be three days’ pestilence in your land? now advise, and see what answer I shall return to him who sent me.
13And Gad went in to David, and told him, and said to him, Choose one of these things to befall you, whether there shall come on you for three years famine in your land; or that you should flee three months before your enemies, and they should pursue you; or that there should be for three days mortality in your land. Now then decide, and see what answer I shall return to him who sent me. |
14And David said to Gad, I am in a great strait: let’s fall now into the hand of Yahweh; for his mercies are great; and don’t let me fall into the hand of man.
14And David said to Gad, On every side I am much restricted: let me fall now into the hands of the Lord, for his mercies are very many; and don’t let me fall into the hands of man. | 14And David said to Gad, On every side I am much restricted: let me fall now into the hands of the Lord, for his mercies are very many; and don’t let me fall into the hands of man. |
Pestilence Sent
15So Yahweh sent a pestilence on Israēl from the morning even to the time appointed; and there died of the people from Dan even to Beer-sheba 70,000 men.

15So David chose for himself the mortality; and they were the days of wheat-harvest; and the Lord sent a pestilence on Israēl from morning till noon, and the plague began among the people; and there died of the people from Dan even to Bērsabee 70,000 men. | 15So David chose for himself the mortality; and they were the days of wheat-harvest; and the Lord sent a pestilence on Israēl from morning till noon, and the plague began among the people; and there died of the people from Dan even to Bērsabee 70,000 men. |
16And when the angel stretched out his hand on Jerusalem to destroy it, Yahweh repented him of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed the people, It is enough: stay now your hand. And the angel of Yahweh was by the threshing-place of Araunah the Jebusite.
16And the angel of the Lord stretched out his hand against Jerusalem to destroy it, and the Lord repented of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed the people, It is enough now, withhold your hand. And the angel of the Lord was by the threshing floor of Orna the Jebusite. |
17And David spoke to Yahweh when he saw the angel that smote the people, and said, Lo, I have sinned, and I have done wickedly; but these sheep, what have they done? let your hand, please, be against me, and against my father’s house.

17And David spoke to the Lord when he saw the angel smiting the people, and he said, Behold, it is I that have done wrong, but these sheep what have they done? David Builds an Altar
18And Gad came that day to David, and said to him, Go up, rear an altar to Yahweh in the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.
18And Gad came to David in that day, and said to him, Go up, and set up to the Lord an altar in the threshing floor of Orna the Jebusite. | 18And Gad came to David in that day, and said to him, Go up, and set up to the Lord an altar in the threshing floor of Orna the Jebusite. |
19And David, according to the saying of Gad, went up as Yahweh commanded.
19And David went up according to the word of Gad, as the Lord commanded him. | 19And David went up according to the word of Gad, as the Lord commanded him. |
20And Araunah looked, and saw the king and his servants coming on toward him; and Araunah went out, and bowed himself before the king on his face on the ground.
20And Orna looked out, and saw the king and his servants coming on before him; and Orna went forth, and did obeisance to the king with his face to the earth. | 20And Orna looked out, and saw the king and his servants coming on before him; and Orna went forth, and did obeisance to the king with his face to the earth. |
21And Araunah said, Why is my lord the king come to his servant? And David said, To buy the threshing floor of you, to build an altar to Yahweh, that the plague may be stayed from the people.

21And Orna said, Why has my lord the king come to his servant? And David said, To buy of you the threshing floor, in order to build an altar to the Lord that the plague may be restrained from off the people. | 21And Orna said, Why has my lord the king come to his servant? And David said, To buy of you the threshing floor, in order to build an altar to the Lord that the plague may be restrained from off the people. |
22And Araunah said to David, Let my lord the king take and offer up what seems good to him: behold, here be oxen for burned sacrifice, and threshing instruments and other instruments of the oxen for wood.
22And Orna said to David, Let my lord the king take and offer to the Lord what is good in his eyes: behold, here are oxen for a whole-burnt-offering, and the wheels and furniture of the oxen for wood. | 22And Orna said to David, Let my lord the king take and offer to the Lord what is good in his eyes: behold, here are oxen for a whole-burnt-offering, and the wheels and furniture of the oxen for wood. |
23All these things did Araunah, as a king, give to the king. And Araunah said to the king, Yahweh your Elohim accept you.

24And the king said to Araunah, No; but I will surely buy it of you at a price: neither will I offer burnt offerings to Yahweh my Elohim of what does cost me nothing. So David bought the threshing floor and the oxen for 50 shekels of silver.
