Judges

1 And it happened in those days, when there was no king in Israēl, that there was a certain Levite staying on the side of mount Ephraim, who took a concubine out of Bethlehem-Judah for himself.

1 Καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις ἐκείναις καὶ βασιλεὺς οὐκ ἦν ἐν Ἰσραήλ. καὶ ἐγένετο ἀνὴρ Λευίτης παροικῶν ἐν μηροῖς ὄρους Ἐφραίμ, καὶ ἔλαβεν ὁ ἀνὴρ ἑαυτῷ γυναῖκα παλλακὴν ἐκ Βηθλεὲμ Ἰούδα.	1 Καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις ἐκείναις καὶ οὐκ ἦν βασιλεὺς ἐν Ἰσραήλ· καὶ ἐγένετο ἀνὴρ Λευίτης παροικῶν ἐν μηροῖς ὄρους Ἐφραὶμ καὶ ἔλαβεν αὐτῷ γυναῖκα παλλακὴν ἀπὸ Βηθλεὲμ Ἰούδα.
1 And it came to be, in those days that there was no king in Israēl. And it came to be, that a man, a Levite, was living as a resident alien in the base of the hill country of Ephraim. 2 And his concubine played the prostitute against him, and went away from him to her father’s house to Bethlehem-Judah, and was there four whole months.

2 καὶ ὠργίσθη αὐτῷ ἡ παλλακὴ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀπῆλθεν ἀπ’ αὐτοῦ εἰς τὸν οἶκον τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτῆς εἰς Βηθλεὲμ Ἰούδα καὶ ἐγένετο ἐκεῖ ἡμέρας τετράμηνον.	2 καὶ ἐπορεύθη ἀπ’ αὐτοῦ ἡ παλλακὴ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀπῆλθεν παρ’ αὐτοῦ εἰς οἶκον πατρὸς αὐτῆς εἰς Βηθλεὲμ Ἰούδα καὶ ἦν ἐκεῖ ἡμέρας τεσσάρων μηνῶν.

3 And her husband arose, and went after her, to speak kindly to her, and to bring her again, having his servant with him, and a couple of donkeys. And she brought him into her father’s house. And when the father of the woman saw him, he rejoiced to meet him.

3 καὶ ἀνέστη ὁ ἀνὴρ αὐτῆς καὶ ἐπορεύθη κατόπισθεν αὐτῆς τοῦ λαλῆσαι ἐπὶ τὴν καρδίαν αὐτῆς τοῦ διαλλάξαι αὐτὴν ἑαυτῷ καὶ ἀπαγαγεῖν αὐτὴν πάλιν πρὸς αὐτόν, καὶ τὸ παιδάριον αὐτοῦ μετ’ αὐτοῦ καὶ ζεῦγος ὑποζυγίων· καὶ ἐπορεύθη ἕως οἴκου τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτῆς, καὶ εἶδεν αὐτὸν ὁ πατὴρ τῆς νεάνιδος καὶ παρῆν εἰς ἀπάντησιν αὐτοῦ.	3 καὶ ἀνέστη ὁ ἀνὴρ αὐτῆς καὶ ἐπορεύθη ὀπίσω αὐτῆς τοῦ λαλῆσαι ἐπὶ καρδίαν αὐτῆς τοῦ ἐπιστρέψαι αὐτὴν αὐτῷ, καὶ νεανίας αὐτοῦ μετ’ αὐτοῦ καὶ ζεῦγος ὄνων· καὶ ἥδε εἰσήνεγκεν αὐτὸν εἰς οἶκον πατρὸς αὐτῆς, καὶ εἶδεν αὐτὸν ὁ πατὴρ τῆς νεάνιδος καὶ ηὐφράνθη εἰς συνάντησιν αὐτοῦ.
3 And her husband got up and set out after her, to speak to her heart, to reconcile her to himself and bring her back to him. And his young servant was with him, and a yoke of work animals. And he came as far as her father’s house, and the young woman’s father saw him and was there to meet him.	3 And her husband got up and set out after her, to speak to her heart, to turn her back to him. 4 And his father-in-law, the woman’s father, detained him; and he stayed with him three days; so they ate and drank, and lodged there.

4 καὶ εἰσήγαγεν αὐτὸν ὁ γαμβρὸς αὐτοῦ ὁ πατὴρ τῆς νεάνιδος καὶ ἐκάθισεν μετ’ αὐτοῦ ἡμέρας τρεῖς, καὶ ἔφαγον καὶ ἔπιον καὶ ὕπνωσαν ἐκεῖ.	4 καὶ κατέσχεν αὐτὸν ὁ γαμβρὸς αὐτοῦ ὁ πατὴρ τῆς νεάνιδος καὶ ἐκάθισεν μετ’ αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ τρεῖς ἡμέρας, καὶ ἔφαγον καὶ ἔπιον καὶ ηὐλίσθησαν ἐκεῖ.
4 And his father-in-law, the young woman’s father, brought him inside and sat with him three days, and they ate and drank and slept there.	4 And his father-in-law, the young woman’s father, detained him and sat with him for three days, and they ate and drank and lodged there.

5 And it happened on the fourth day, when they arose early in the morning, that he rose up to depart. The woman’s father said to his son-in-law, “Comfort your heart with a piece of bread, and afterward go your way.”

5 καὶ ἐγενήθη τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῇ τετάρτῃ καὶ ὤρθρισαν τὸ πρωί, καὶ ἀνέστη τοῦ ἀπελθεῖν· καὶ εἶπεν ὁ πατὴρ τῆς νεάνιδος πρὸς τὸν γαμβρὸν αὐτοῦ Στήρισον τὴν καρδίαν σου κλάσματι ἄρτου, καὶ μετὰ τοῦτο πορεύεσθε.	5 καὶ ἐγένετο τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῇ τετάρτῃ καὶ ὤρθρισαν τὸ πρωί καὶ ἀνέστη τοῦ πορευθῆναι· καὶ εἶπεν ὁ πατὴρ τῆς νεάνιδος πρὸς τὸν νυμφίον αὐτοῦ· στήρισόν σου τὴν καρδίαν ψωμῷ ἄρτου, καὶ μετὰ τοῦτο πορεύσεσθε.
5 And it came to be, on the fourth day that they rose early in the morning, and he got up to leave, and the young woman’s father said to his son-in-law, “Strengthen your heart with a fragment of bread, and go after that.”	5 And it came to be, on the fourth day that they rose early in the morning, and he got up to go and the young woman’s father said to his bridegroom, “Strengthen your heart with a bit of bread, and you shall go after that.”

6 And they both sat down and ate and drank together; for the woman’s father had said to the man, “Be content, please, and stay all night, and let your heart be merry.”

6 καὶ ἐκάθισαν καὶ ἔφαγον ἀμφότεροι ἐπὶ τὸ αὐτὸ καὶ ἔπιον· καὶ εἶπεν ὁ πατὴρ τῆς νεάνιδος πρὸς τὸν ἄνδρα Ἀρξάμενος αὐλίσθητι, καὶ ἀγαθυνθήτω ἡ καρδία σου.	6 καὶ ἐκάθισεν καὶ ἔφαγον οἱ δύο ἐπὶ τὸ αὐτὸ καὶ ἔπιον· καὶ εἶπεν ὁ πατὴρ τῆς νεάνιδος πρὸς τὸν ἄνδρα· ἄγε δὴ αὐλίσθητι, καὶ ἀγαθυνθήσεται ἡ καρδία σου.
6 And both sat and ate in the same place, and they drank, and the young woman’s father said to the man, “Begin, and lodge, and let your heart be glad.”	6 And he sat down, and the two ate in the same place, and they drank, and the young woman’s father said to the man, “Please come, lodge, and your heart will be glad.”

7 And when the man rose up to depart, his father-in-law urged him; therefore he stayed there again.

7 καὶ ἀνέστη ὁ ἀνὴρ ἀπελθεῖν· καὶ ἐβιάσατο αὐτὸν ὁ γαμβρὸς αὐτοῦ, καὶ πάλιν ηὐλίσθη ἐκεῖ.	7 καὶ ἀνέστη ὁ ἀνὴρ τοῦ πορεύεσθαι· καὶ ἐβιάσατο αὐτὸν ὁ γαμβρὸς αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐκάθισεν καὶ ηὐλίσθη ἐκεῖ.

8 And he arose early in the morning on the fifth day to depart; and the damsel’s father said, “Comfort your heart, please.” And they stayed until afternoon, and both of them ate.

8 καὶ ὤρθρισεν τὸ πρωῒ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῇ πέμπτῃ τοῦ ἀπελθεῖν· καὶ εἶπεν ὁ πατὴρ τῆς νεάνιδος Στήρισον τὴν καρδίαν σου ἄρτῳ καὶ στρατεύθητι ἕως κλίνῃ ἡ ἡμέρα· καὶ ἔφαγον καὶ ἔπιον ἀμφότεροι.	8 καὶ ὤρθρισεν τὸ πρωῒ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῇ πέμπτῃ τοῦ πορευθῆναι· καὶ εἶπεν ὁ πατὴρ τῆς νεάνιδος· στήρισον δὴ τὴν καρδίαν σου καὶ στράτευσον ἕως κλῖναι τὴν ἡμέραν· καὶ ἔφαγον οἱ δύο.
8 And on the fifth day he rose early in the morning to leave, and the young woman’s father said, “Strengthen your heart with bread, and march until the day is spent.” And both of them ate and drank.	8 And on the fifth day he rose early in the morning to go, and the young woman’s father said, “Please strengthen your heart, and march until the day is spent.” And the two ate.

9 And when the man rose up to depart, he, and his concubine, and his servant, then his father-in-law, the woman’s father, said to him, “Look, now the day draws toward evening, please stay all night. Look, the day grows to an end, lodge here, that your heart may be merry; and tomorrow leave early on your way, so that you may go home.”

9 καὶ ἀνέστη ὁ ἀνὴρ τοῦ ἀπελθεῖν, αὐτὸς καὶ ἡ παλλακὴ αὐτοῦ καὶ τὸ παιδάριον αὐτοῦ· καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ ὁ γαμβρὸς αὐτοῦ ὁ πατὴρ τῆς νεάνιδος Ἰδοὺ δὴ εἰς ἑσπέραν κέκλικεν ἡ ἡμέρα· κατάλυσον ὧδε ἔτι σήμερον, καὶ ἀγαθυνθήτω ἡ καρδία σου, καὶ ὀρθριεῖτε αὔριον εἰς τὴν ὁδὸν ὑμῶν, καὶ ἀπελεύσῃ εἰς τὸ σκήνωμά σου.	9 καὶ ἀνέστη ὁ ἀνὴρ τοῦ πορευθῆναι, αὐτὸς καὶ ἡ παλλακὴ αὐτοῦ καὶ ὁ νεανίας αὐτοῦ· καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ ὁ γαμβρὸς αὐτοῦ ὁ πατὴρ τῆς νεάνιδος· ἰδοὺ δὴ ἠσθένησεν ἡ ἡμέρα εἰς τὴν ἑσπέραν αὐλίσθητι ὧδε, καὶ ἀγαθυνθήσεται ἡ καρδία σου, καὶ ὀρθριεῖτε αὔριον εἰς ὁδὸν ὑμῶν καὶ πορεύσῃ εἰς τὸ σκήνωμά σου.
9 And the man got up to leave, he and his concubine and his young servant, and his father-in-law, the young woman’s father, said to him, “Please look! the day has inclined towards evening. Stay here today as well, and let your heart be glad, and tomorrow you shall rise early for your journey and shall depart for your dwelling.”	9 And the man got up to go, he and his concubine and his young man, and his father-in-law, the young woman’s father, said to him, “Please look! the day has weakened towards evening. Lodge here, and your heart will be glad, and tomorrow you shall rise early for your journey and leave for your dwelling.”

10 But the man was unwilling to stay that night. After he got up, he departed, and came over opposite Jebus, which is Jerusalem. And there were with him two saddled donkeys. His concubine was also with him.

10 καὶ οὐκ ἠθέλησεν ὁ ἀνὴρ αὐλισθῆναι καὶ ἀνέστη καὶ ἀπῆλθεν, καὶ παρεγένοντο ἕως κατέναντι Ἰεβοὺς (αὕτη ἐστὶν Ἱερουσαλήμ), καὶ μετ’ αὐτοῦ ζεῦγος ὑποζυγίων ἐπισεσαγμένων, καὶ ἡ παλλακὴ αὐτοῦ μετ’ αὐτοῦ.	10 καὶ οὐκ εὐδόκησεν ὁ ἀνὴρ αὐλισθῆναι καὶ ἀνέστη καὶ ἀπῆλθεν καὶ ἦλθεν ἕως ἀπέναντι Ἰεβοὺς (αὕτη ἐστὶν Ἱερουσαλήμ), καὶ μετ’ αὐτοῦ ζεῦγος ὄνων ἐπισεσαγμένων, καὶ ἡ παλλακὴ αὐτοῦ μετ’ αὐτοῦ.
10 And the man didn’t want to lodge, and he got up and departed, and they went as far as opposite Iebous (this is Jerousalēm). And with him was a yoke of loaded work animals, and his concubine was with him.	10 And the man was not pleased to lodge, and he got up and departed, and he came as far as opposite Iebous (this is Jerousalēm). 11 And when they were by Jebus, the day was far spent; and the servant said to his master, “Come, please, and let’s turn in into this city of the Jebusites, and lodge in it.”

11 ἔτι αὐτῶν ὄντων κατὰ Ἰεβοὺς καὶ ἡ ἡμέρα κεκλικυῖα σφόδρα· καὶ εἶπεν τὸ παιδάριον πρὸς τὸν κύριον αὐτοῦ Δεῦρο δὴ καὶ ἐκκλίνωμεν εἰς τὴν πόλιν τοῦ Ἰεβουσαίου ταύτην καὶ αὐλισθῶμεν ἐν αὐτῇ.	11 καὶ ἤλθοσαν ἕως Ἰεβούς, καὶ ἡ ἡμέρα προβεβήκει σφόδρα· καὶ εἶπεν ὁ νεανίας πρὸς τὸν κύριον αὐτοῦ· δεῦρο δὴ καὶ ἐκκλίνωμεν εἰς πόλιν τοῦ Ἰεβουσὶ ταύτην καὶ αὐλισθῶμεν ἐν αὐτῇ.
11 While they were still near Iebous (and the day was far spent), then the young servant said to his master, “Please come and let us turn aside to this city of the Jebousite and lodge in it.”	11 And they came as far as Iebous, and the day was far advanced, and the young man said to his master, “Please come and let us turn aside to this city of the Jebousite and lodge in it.”

12 And his master said to him, “We won’t turn aside here into the city of a stranger, that is not of the sons of Israēl; we will pass over to Gibeah.”

12 καὶ εἶπεν ὁ κύριος αὐτοῦ πρὸς αὐτόν Οὐ μὴ ἐκκλίνω εἰς πόλιν ἀλλοτρίου, ἣ οὐκ ἔστιν ἐκ τῶν υἱῶν Ἰσραήλ, καὶ παρελευσόμεθα ἕως Γαβαά.	12 καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτὸν ὁ κύριος αὐτοῦ· οὐκ ἐκκλινοῦμεν εἰς πόλιν ἀλλοτρίαν, ἐν ᾗ οὐκ ἔστιν ἀπὸ υἱῶν Ἰσραὴλ ὧδε, καὶ παρελευσόμεθα ἕως Γαβαά.
12 And his master said to him, “I will not turn aside into a foreigner’s city, which is not of the sons of Israēl, and we will continue on as far as Gabaa.”	12 And his master said to him, “We will not turn aside into a foreign city in which there is none from among the sons of Israēl here, and we will continue on as far as Gabaa.”

13 And he said to his servant, “Come, and let’s draw near to one of these places to lodge all night, in Gibeah, or in Ramah.”

13 καὶ εἶπεν τῷ παιδαρίῳ αὐτοῦ Δεῦρο καὶ εἰσέλθωμεν εἰς ἕνα τῶν τόπων καὶ αὐλισθῶμεν ἐν Γαβαὰ ἢ ἐν Ῥαμά.	13 καὶ εἶπεν τῷ νεανίᾳ αὐτοῦ· δεῦρο καὶ ἐγγίσωμεν ἑνὶ τῶν τόπων καὶ αὐλισθησόμεθα ἐν Γαβαὰ ἢ ἐν Ῥαμά.
13 And he said to his young servant, “Come, and let us enter one of the places and lodge in Gabaa or in Rhama.”	13 And he said to his young man, “Come, and let us go near one of the places, and we will lodge in Gabaa or in Rhama.”

14 And they passed on and went their way; and the sun went down on them when they were by Gibeah, which belongs to Benjamin.

15 And they turned aside to that place, to go in and to lodge in Gibeah; and when he went in, he sat down in a street of the city; for there was no one who invited them into his home to lodge.

15 καὶ ἐξέκλιναν ἐκεῖ τοῦ εἰσελθεῖν καταλῦσαι ἐν Γαβαά· καὶ εἰσῆλθον καὶ ἐκάθισαν ἐν τῇ πλατείᾳ τῆς πόλεως, καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν ἀνὴρ ὁ συνάγων αὐτοὺς εἰς τὸν οἶκον καταλῦσαι.	15 καὶ ἐξέκλιναν ἐκεῖ τοῦ εἰσελθεῖν αὐλισθῆναι ἐν Γαβαά· καὶ εἰσῆλθον καὶ ἐκάθισαν ἐν τῇ πλατείᾳ τῆς πόλεως, καὶ οὐκ ἦν ἀνὴρ συνάγων αὐτοὺς εἰς οἰκίαν αὐλισθῆναι.
15 And they turned aside there, to go in to stay in Gabaa. And they entered and sat down in the square of the city, and there was no man who would take them into the house to stay.	15 And they turned aside there, to go in to lodge in Gabaa. 16 And, suddenly, an old man came from his work out of the field at evening, who was also of mount Ephraim; and he stayed in Gibeah; but the men of the place were Benjamites.

16 καὶ ἰδοὺ ἀνὴρ πρεσβύτης εἰσῆλθεν ἀπὸ τῶν ἔργων αὐτοῦ ἐκ τοῦ ἀγροῦ ἑσπέρας· καὶ ὁ ἀνὴρ ἐξ ὄρους Ἐφραίμ, καὶ αὐτὸς παρῴκει ἐν Γαβαά, καὶ οἱ ἄνδρες τοῦ τόπου υἱοὶ Βενιαμίν.	16 καὶ ἰδοὺ ἀνὴρ πρεσβύτης ἤρχετο ἐξ ἔργων αὐτοῦ ἐξ ἀγροῦ ἐν ἑσπέρᾳ· καὶ ὁ ἀνὴρ ἦν ἐξ ὄρους Ἐφραίμ, καὶ αὐτὸς παρῴκει ἐν Γαβαά, καὶ οἱ ἄνδρες τοῦ τόπου υἱοὶ Βενιαμίν.
16 And look! at evening, an old man came in from his work, out of the field. And the man was from the hill country of Ephraim, and he was a resident alien in Gabaa (and the men of the place were sons of Benjamin).	16 And look! at evening, an old man was coming in from his work, out of the field. 17 And when he had lifted up his eyes, he saw a traveller in the public square of the city; and the old man said, “To where are you going? And from where have you come?”

17 καὶ ἀναβλέψας τοῖς ὀφθαλμοῖς εἶδεν τὸν ἄνδρα τὸν ὁδοιπόρον ἐν τῇ πλατείᾳ τῆς πόλεως· καὶ εἶπεν ὁ ἀνὴρ ὁ πρεσβύτης Ποῦ πορεύῃ καὶ πόθεν ἔρχῃ;	17 καὶ ἦρεν τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς αὐτοῦ καὶ εἶδεν τὸν ὁδοιπόρον ἄνδρα ἐν τῇ πλατείᾳ τῆς πόλεως· καὶ εἶπεν ὁ ἀνὴρ ὁ πρεσβύτης· ποῦ πορεύῃ καὶ πόθεν ἔρχῃ;
17 And after he looked up with his eyes, he saw the man, the traveller in the square of the city, and the old man said, “Where are you going, and where do you come from?”	17 And the old man lifted up his eyes and saw the travelling man in the square of the city, and the old man said, “Where are you going, and where do you come from?”

18 And he said to him, “We are passing from Bethlehem-Judah toward the side of mount Ephraim. I am from there. I went to Bethlehem-Judah, but I am now going to the house of Yahweh; and there is no one who has invited me to his home.

18 καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτόν Διαβαίνομεν ἡμεῖς ἐκ Βηθλεὲμ τῆς Ἰούδα ἕως μηρῶν ὄρους τοῦ Ἐφραίμ· ἐγὼ δὲ ἐκεῖθέν εἰμι καὶ ἐπορεύθην ἕως Βηθλεὲμ Ἰούδα, καὶ εἰς τὸν οἶκόν μου ἐγὼ ἀποτρέχω, καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν ἀνὴρ συνάγων με εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν·	18 καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτόν· ἑσπέρᾳ ἡμεῖς ἀπὸ Βηθλεὲμ Ἰούδα ἕως μηρῶν ὄρους Ἐφραίμ· ἐκεῖθεν ἐγώ εἰμι καὶ ἐπορεύθην ἕως Βηθλεὲμ Ἰούδα, καὶ εἰς τὸν οἶκόν μου ἐγὼ πορεύομαι, καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν ἀνὴρ συνάγων με εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν·
18 And he said to him, “We are passing through out of Bēthleem of Joudas as far as the base of the hill country of Ephraim. Now, I am from there, and I went as far as Bēthleem of Joudas, and I am returning to my home, and there is no man taking me into the house.	18 And he said to him, “We are passing by from Bēthleem of Joudas as far as the base of the hill country of Ephraim. I am from there, and I went as far as Bēthleem of Joudas, and I am going to my home, and there is no man taking me into the house.

19 Yet there is both straw and provender for our donkeys; and there is bread and wine also for me, and for your handmaid, and for the young man who is with your servants. There is no lack of anything.”

19 καὶ γε ἄχυρα καὶ χορτάσματα ὑπάρχει τοῖς ὄνοις ἡμῶν, καὶ γε ἄρτος καὶ οἶνος ὑπάρχει μοι καὶ τῇ δούλῃ σου καὶ τῷ παιδαρίῳ τοῖς δούλοις σου, οὐκ ἔστιν ὑστέρημα παντὸς πράγματος.	19 καὶ γε ἄχυρα καὶ χορτάσματά ἐστιν τοῖς ὄνοις ἡμῶν, καὶ ἄρτοι καὶ οἶνός ἐστιν ἐμοὶ καὶ τῇ παιδίσκῃ καὶ τῷ νεανίσκῳ μετὰ τῶν παιδίων σου, οὐκ ἔστιν ὑστέρημα παντὸς πράγματος.
19 And indeed, there is straw and feed for our donkeys, and indeed there is bread and wine for me and for your female slave and for the young servant, your slaves. 20 And the old man said, “Peace be with you. However let all your needs rest with me; only don’t stay in the public square.”

20 καὶ εἶπεν ὁ ἀνὴρ ὁ πρεσβύτης Εἰρήνη σοί πλὴν πᾶν τὸ ὑστέρημά σου ἐπ’ ἐμέ· πλὴν ἐν τῇ πλατείᾳ μὴ καταλύσῃς.	20 καὶ εἶπεν ὁ ἀνὴρ ὁ πρεσβύτης· εἰρήνη σοι, πλὴν πᾶν ὑστέρημά σου ἐπ’ ἐμέ· πλὴν ἐν τῇ πλατείᾳ οὐ μὴ αὐλισθήσῃ.

21 So he brought him into his house, and gave feed to the donkeys; and they washed their feet, and ate and drank.

21 καὶ εἰσήγαγεν αὐτὸν εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν αὐτοῦ καὶ παρέβαλεν τοῖς ὑποζυγίοις αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐνίψαντο τοὺς πόδας αὐτῶν καὶ ἔφαγον καὶ ἔπιον.	21 καὶ εἰσήνεγκεν αὐτὸν εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ καὶ τόπον ἐποίησεν τοῖς ὄνοις, καὶ αὐτοὶ ἐνίψαντο τοὺς πόδας αὐτῶν καὶ ἔφαγον καὶ ἔπιον.
21 And he led him into his house and fed his work animals, and they washed their feet and ate and drank.	21 And he brought him into his house and made a place for the donkeys, and they washed their feet and ate and drank.

22 Now as they were making their hearts merry, suddenly, the men of the city, certain sons of Belial, surrounded the house, and knocked at the door. And they spoke to the master of the house, the old man, saying, “Bring forth the man who came into your house, so that we may know him sexually.”

22 αὐτῶν δὲ ἀγαθυνθέντων τῇ καρδίᾳ αὐτῶν καὶ ἰδοὺ οἱ ἄνδρες τῆς πόλεως υἱοὶ παρανόμων περιεκύκλωσαν τὴν οἰκίαν καὶ ἔκρουσαν τὴν θύραν καὶ εἶπαν πρὸς τὸν ἄνδρα τὸν κύριον τῆς οἰκίας τὸν πρεσβύτην λέγοντες Ἐξάγαγε τὸν ἄνδρα τὸν εἰσελθόντα εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν σου, ἵνα γνῶμεν αὐτόν.	22 αὐτοὶ δ’ ἀγαθύνοντες καρδίαν αὐτῶν καὶ ἰδοὺ ἄνδρες τῆς πόλεως υἱοὶ παρανόμων ἐκύκλωσαν τὴν οἰκίαν κρούοντες ἐπὶ τὴν θύραν. καὶ εἶπον πρὸς τὸν ἄνδρα τὸν κύριον τοῦ οἴκου τὸν πρεσβύτην λέγοντες· ἐξένεγκε τὸν ἄνδρα, ὃς εἰσῆλθεν εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν σου, ἵνα γνῶμεν αὐτόν.
22 Now after they were glad in their heart, then look! the men of the city, sons of transgressors, encircled the house and beat on the door. And they said to the man, the master of the house, the old man, saying, “Bring out the man who came into your house so that we may know him.”	22 Now they were cheering their heart, and look! men of the city, sons of lawless men, surrounded the house, beating on the door. And they said to the man, the master of the house, the old man, saying, “Bring out the man who came into your house so that we may know him.”

23 And the man, the master of the house, went out to them, and said to them, “No, my brothers, no, please, don’t do so wickedly; since this man has come into my house, don’t do this perversion.

23 καὶ ἐξῆλθεν πρὸς αὐτοὺς ὁ ἀνὴρ ὁ κύριος τῆς οἰκίας καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς Μηδαμῶς ἀδελφοί, μὴ πονηρεύσησθε δή· μετὰ τὸ εἰσεληλυθέναι τὸν ἄνδρα τοῦτον εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν μου μὴ ποιήσητε τὴν ἀφροσύνην ταύτην·	23 καὶ ἐξῆλθεν πρὸς αὐτοὺς ὁ ἀνὴρ ὁ κύριος τοῦ οἴκου καὶ εἶπεν· μή ἀδελφοί, μὴ κακοποιήσητε δή μετὰ τὸ εἰσελθεῖν τὸν ἄνδρα τοῦτον εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν μου, μὴ ποιήσητε τὴν ἀφροσύνην ταύτην·
23 And the man, the master of the house, went out to them and said to them, “certainly not, my brothers, please don’t be wicked. After this man has come into my house, don’t do this foolishness.	23 And the man, the master of the house, went out to them and said, “No, my brothers, please don’t commit evil. After this man has come into my house, don’t do this foolishness.

24 Behold, here is my virgin daughter and his concubine; I will bring them out now. Rape them and do with them whatever seems good. But don’t do this perversion to this man.”

24 ἰδοὺ ἡ θυγάτηρ μου ἡ παρθένος καὶ ἡ παλλακὴ αὐτοῦ, ἐξάξω δὴ αὐτάς, καὶ ταπεινώσατε αὐτὰς καὶ ποιήσατε αὐταῖς τὸ ἀγαθὸν ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς ὑμῶν· καὶ τῷ ἀνδρὶ τούτῳ μὴ ποιήσητε τὸ ῥῆμα τῆς ἀφροσύνης ταύτης.	24 ἰδὲ ἡ θυγάτηρ μου ἡ παρθένος καὶ ἡ παλλακὴ αὐτοῦ ἐξάξω αὐτάς, καὶ ταπεινώσατε αὐτὰς καὶ ποιήσατε αὐταῖς τὸ ἀγαθὸν ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς ὑμῶν· καὶ τῷ ἀνδρὶ τούτῳ οὐ ποιήσετε τὸ ῥῆμα τῆς ἀφροσύνης ταύτης.
24 Look! my virgin daughter and his concubine, I will bring them out, please, and humiliate them and do to them what is good in your eyes, and against this man don’t carry out the thing of this foolishness.”	24 See, my virgin daughter and his concubine, I will bring them out, and humiliate them and do to them what is good in your eyes, and against this man you will not carry out the thing of this foolishness.”

25 But the men would not listen to him; so the man took his concubine, and brought her out to them. They knew her sexually, and abused her all night until the morning. When the day dawned, they let her go.

25 καὶ οὐκ ἠθέλησαν οἱ ἄνδρες ἀκοῦσαι αὐτοῦ. καὶ ἐπελάβετο ὁ ἀνὴρ τῆς παλλακῆς αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐξήγαγεν αὐτὴν πρὸς αὐτοὺς ἔξω, καὶ ἔγνωσαν αὐτὴν καὶ ἐνέπαιξαν αὐτῇ ὅλην τὴν νύκτα ἕως τὸ πρωί· καὶ ἐξαπέστειλαν αὐτὴν ἅμα τῷ ἀναβαίνειν τὸν ὄρθρον.	25 καὶ οὐκ εὐδόκησαν οἱ ἄνδρες τοῦ εἰσακοῦσαι αὐτοῦ. καὶ ἐπελάβετο ὁ ἀνὴρ τῆς παλλακῆς αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐξήγαγεν αὐτὴν πρὸς αὐτοὺς ἔξω καὶ ἔγνωσαν αὐτὴν καὶ ἐνέπαιζον ἐν αὐτῇ ὅλην τὴν νύκτα ἕως πρωΐ· καὶ ἐξαπέστειλαν αὐτήν, ὡς ἀνέβη τὸ πρωΐ.
25 And the men didn’t want to listen to him. And the man seized his concubine and led her out to them outside, and they knew her and used her sexually all through the night until the early morning. And just as the dawn began to break, they sent her away.	25 And the men were not pleased to listen to him. 26 Early in the morning, the woman fell down at the door of the man’s house where her husband was, until it was light.

26 καὶ ἦλθεν ἡ γυνὴ τὸ πρὸς πρωῒ καὶ ἔπεσεν παρὰ τὴν θύραν τοῦ πυλῶνος τοῦ οἴκου τοῦ ἀνδρός, οὗ ἦν ὁ κύριος αὐτῆς ἐκεῖ, ἕως οὗ διέφαυσεν.	26 καὶ ἦλθεν ἡ γυνὴ πρὸς τὸν ὄρθρον καὶ ἔπεσεν παρὰ τὴν θύραν τοῦ οἴκου, οὗ ἦν αὐτῆς ἐκεῖ ὁ ἀνήρ, ἕως τοῦ διαφῶσαι.
26 And toward morning, the woman came and fell down by the door at the gateway to the man’s house, there where her master was, until it was dawn.	26 And toward dawn, the woman came and fell down at the door of the house, there where her husband was, until it was dawn.

27 And her husband rose up in the morning, and opened the doors of the house, and went out to go on his way. And, look, the woman who was his concubine had fallen down at the door of the house, and her hands were on the threshold.

27 καὶ ἀνέστη ὁ κύριος αὐτῆς τὸ πρωῒ καὶ ἤνοιξεν τὰς θύρας τοῦ οἴκου καὶ ἐξῆλθεν τοῦ ἀπελθεῖν τὴν ὁδὸν αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἰδοὺ ἡ γυνὴ ἡ παλλακὴ αὐτοῦ πεπτωκυῖα παρὰ τὴν θύραν, καὶ αἱ χεῖρες αὐτῆς ἐπὶ τὸ πρόθυρον.	27 καὶ ἀνέστη ὁ ἀνὴρ αὐτῆς τὸ πρωῒ καὶ ἤνοιξεν τὰς θύρας τοῦ οἴκου, καὶ ἐξῆλθεν τοῦ πορευθῆναι τὴν ὁδὸν αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἰδοὺ ἡ γυνὴ ἡ παλλακὴ αὐτοῦ πεπτωκυῖα παρὰ τὰς θύρας τοῦ οἴκου, καὶ αἱ χεῖρες αὐτῆς ἐπὶ τὸ πρόθυρον.

28 And he said to her, “Up, and let’s go.” But she didn’t answer. Then the man mounted her on a donkey, and the man got up, and went to his place.

28 καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτήν Ἀνάστηθι καὶ ἀπέλθωμεν· καὶ οὐκ ἀπεκρίθη αὐτῷ, ἀλλὰ τεθνήκει. καὶ ἀνέλαβεν αὐτὴν ἐπὶ τὸ ὑποζύγιον καὶ ἀνέστη ὁ ἀνὴρ καὶ ἀπῆλθεν εἰς τὸν τόπον αὐτοῦ.	28 καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτήν· ἀνάστα καὶ ἀπέλθωμεν· καὶ οὐκ ἀπεκρίθη, ὅτι ἦν νεκρά. καὶ ἔλαβεν αὐτὴν ἐπὶ τὸν ὄνον καὶ ἐπορεύθη εἰς τὸν τόπον αὐτοῦ.
28 And he said to her, “Get up, and let’s go.” And she didn’t answer him, but she had died. And he took her up onto the work animal, and the man got up and departed for his place.	28 And he said to her, “Get up, and let’s go.” And she didn’t answer, for she was a corpse. And he took her onto the donkey and went to his place.

29 And when he came into his home, he took a knife, and laid hold on his concubine, and cut her into twelve pieces, together with her bones. And he sent her parts into all the territory of Israēl.

29 καὶ εἰσῆλθεν εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ καὶ ἔλαβεν τὴν μάχαιραν καὶ ἐπελάβετο τῆς παλλακῆς αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐμέλισεν αὐτὴν κατὰ τὰ ὀστᾶ αὐτῆς εἰς δώδεκα μερίδας καὶ ἐξαπέστειλεν αὐτὰς εἰς πάσας τὰς φυλὰς Ἰσραήλ.	29 καὶ ἔλαβεν τὴν ῥομφαίαν καὶ ἐκράτησεν τὴν παλλακὴν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐμέλισεν αὐτὴν εἰς δώδεκα μέλη καὶ ἀπέστειλεν αὐτὰ ἐν παντὶ ὁρίῳ Ἰσραήλ.
29 And he entered his house and took his dagger and took hold of his concubine and dismembered her into twelve pieces, limb by limb, and sent them to all the tribes of Israēl.	29 And he took his sword and seized his concubine and dismembered her into twelve members and sent them to every territory of Israēl.

30 And it was so, when all who saw it said, “No such deed has ever been done or seen from the day that the sons of Israēl came up out of the land of Egypt to this day. Consider it, decide, and speak up!”

30 καὶ ἐγένετο πᾶς ὁ ὁρῶν ἔλεγεν οὔτε ἐγενήθη Οὔτε ὤφθη οὕτως ἀπὸ τῆς ἡμέρας ἀναβάσεως υἱῶν Ἰσραὴλ ἐξ Αἰγύπτου ἕως τῆς ἡμέρας ταύτης. καὶ ἐνετείλατο τοῖς ἀνδράσιν, οἷς ἐξαπέστειλεν, λέγων Τάδε ἐρεῖτε πρὸς πάντα ἄνδρα Ἰσραὴλ Εἰ γέγονεν κατὰ τὸ ῥῆμα τοῦτο ἀπὸ τῆς ἡμέρας ἀναβάσεως υἱῶν Ἰσραὴλ ἐξ Αἰγύπτου ἕως τῆς ἡμέρας ταύτης; θέσθε δὴ ἑαυτοῖς βουλὴν περὶ αὐτῆς καὶ λαλήσατε.

30 καὶ ἐγένετο πᾶς ὁ βλέπων ἔλεγεν· οὐκ ἐγένετο καὶ οὐχ ἑόραται ὡς αὕτη ἀπὸ ἡμέρας ἀναβάσεως υἱῶν Ἰσραὴλ ἐκ γῆς Αἰγύπτου καὶ ἕως τῆς ἡμέρας ταύτης θέσθε ὑμῖν αὐτοὶ ἐπ’ αὐτὴν βουλὴν καὶ λαλήσατε.

30 And it came to be, that everyone who saw would say, “Neither has it come to be nor has it appeared thus from the day of the coming up of the sons of Israēl from Aigypt until this day.” And he commanded the men whom he sent, saying, “This is what you shall say to every man of Israēl, ‘Has it happened according to this thing from the day of the coming up of the sons of Israēl from Aigypt until this day? Please take counsel with yourselves about her, and speak out.’ ”

30 And it came to be, that everyone who saw it were saying, “It has not come to be, and nothing like this has been seen, from the day of the coming up of the sons of Israēl from the land of Aigypt and until this day. Take counsel in regard to her, and speak out.”
