topJudges ch 18

Chapter 18

AlexandrinusVaticanus

1 In those days there was no king in Israēl; and in those days the tribe of the Danites searched for an inheritance to dwell in; for to that day all their inheritance had not fallen to them among the tribes of Israēl.

1 In those days there was no king in Israēl. And in those days the family of Dan was seeking an inheritance for itself to live in. Because as far as those days no inheritance had fallen to their allotment in the midst of the tribes of Israēl. 1 In those days there was no king in Israēl. And in those days the family of Dan was seeking an inheritance for itself to live in. Because as far that day no inheritance was allocated to them in the midst of the tribes of Israēl.

2 And the children of Dan sent five men of their family from their coasts, men of valour, from Zorah, and from Eshtaol, to spy out the land, and to search it. And they said to them, “Go, search the land.” When they came to mount Ephraim, to the house of Micah, they lodged there.

2 And the sons of Dan sent out five men from their relative, from part of them, sons of power, out of Saraa and Esthaol, to spy out the land and to explore it, and they said to them, “Go, and survey the land.” And they came to the hill country of Ephraim, as far as the house of Micha, and they rested there. 2 And the sons of Dan sent out five men from their divisions, sons of power, from Saraa and from Esthaol, to spy out the land and to explore it, and they said to them, “Go, and explore the land.” And they came as far as the hill country of Ephraim, as far as the house of Michaias, and they lodged there.

3 When they were near the house of Micah, they recognized the voice of the young man the Levite. And they turned in to that place, and said to him, “Who brought you here? And what are you doing in this place? And what have you got in here?”

3 αὐτῶν ὄντων παρὰ τῷ οἴκῳ Μιχὰ καὶ αὐτοὶ ἐπέγνωσαν τὴν φωνὴν τοῦ παιδαρίου τοῦ νεωτέρου τοῦ Λευίτου καὶ ἐξέκλιναν ἐκεῖ καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ Τίς ἤγαγέν σὲ ὧδε, καὶ τί ποιεῖς ἐνταῦθα, καὶ τί σοὶ ἐστιν ὧδε; 3 αὐτοὶ ἐν οἴκῳ Μιχαία, καὶ αὐτοὶ ἐπέγνωσαν τὴν φωνὴν τοῦ νεανίσκου τοῦ Λευίτου καὶ ἐξέκλιναν ἐκεῖ καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ· τίς ἤνεγκέν σὲ ὧδε, καὶ τί σὺ ποιεῖς ἐν τῷ τόπῳ τούτῳ, καὶ τί σοί ὧδε;
3 While they were near the house of Micha, they also recognized the voice of the young lad, the Levite, and they turned aside there and said to him, “Who brought you here? And what are you doing in this place, and what is it to you here?” 3 They were in Michaias’ house, they also recognized the voice of the young man, the Levite, and they turned aside there and said to him, “Who brought you here? And what are you doing in this place, and what is it to you here?”

4 And he said to them, “Thus and thus Micah deals with me, and has hired me, and I am his priest.”

4 And he said to them, “Micha did such and such for me, and he hired me, and I became for a priest to him.” 4 And he said to them, “Michaias did such and such for me, and he hired me, and I became for a priest to him.”

5 And they said to him, “Ask counsel, please, of God, that we may know whether our way which we go shall be prosperous.”

5 And they said to him, “Please inquire by God, and we will know if our journey, on which we are going, is succeeding.” 5 And they said to him, “Please ask by God, and we will know if our journey, on which we are going, will be successful.”

6 And the priest said to them, “Go in peace. May the presence of Yahweh go with you on your way.”

6 And the priest said to them, “Go in peace. Your way on which you are going, is before the Lord.” 6 And the priest said to them, “Go in peace. Your way on which you are going, is before the Lord.”

7 Then the five men departed, and came to Laish, and saw the people who were in it, how they dwelt care free, after the manner of the Zidonians, quiet and secure. And there was no leader in the land, who might shame them in anything. And they were far from the Zidonians, and had no contact with any of them.

7 And the five men went on, and they came to Laisa, and they saw the people who were living in it, settled in hope, according to the decision of the Sidōnians, resting in hope and unable to speak a word, because they were far from Sidōn and had no word with Syria. 7 And the five men went on, and they came to Laisa, and they saw the people in the midst of it, settled in hope, like the judgment of Sidōnians, being quiet, and there was none in the land to deter or to make them ashamed in regard to a word, no oppressive inheritor of a treasury, and they were far from Sidōnians and didn’t have a word with a man.

8 And they came to their brothers to Zorah and Eshtaol; and their brothers said to them, “What do you say?”

8 καὶ παρεγένοντο οἱ πέντε ἄνδρες πρὸς τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς αὐτῶν εἰς Σαραὰ καὶ Ἐσθαόλ, καὶ ἔλεγον αὐτοῖς οἱ ἀδελφοὶ αὐτῶν Τί ὑμεῖς κάθησθε; 8 καὶ ἦλθον οἱ πέντε ἄνδρες πρὸς τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς αὐτῶν εἰς Σαραὰ καὶ Ἐσθαὸλ καὶ εἶπον τοῖς ἀδελφοῖς αὐτῶν· τί ὑμεῖς κάθησθε;
8 And the five men came to their brothers at Saraa and Esthaol and their brothers were saying to them, “Why are you sitting down?” 8 And the five men came to their brothers at Saraa and Esthaol and said to their brothers, “Why are you sitting down?”

9 And they said, “Arise, that we may go up against them; for we have seen the land, and, listen, it is very good. Why do you sit still? Don’t hesitate to go and enter and possess the land.

καὶ ὑμεῖς σιωπᾶτε;
9 καὶ εἶπαν· ἀνάστητε καὶ ἀναβῶμεν ἐπ’ αὐτούς, ὅτι εἴδομεν τὴν γῆν καὶ ἰδοὺ ἀγαθὴ σφόδρα καὶ ὑμεῖς ἡσυχάζετε;
9 And they said, “Get up, and let us go up against them. Because we have entered and journeyed about in the land as far as Laisa, and we saw the people who live in it in hope, according to the judgment of the Sidōnians; and they were far away, away from Sidōn, and they had no word with Syria. But get up, and let us go up against them! Because we have found the land, and look! it is very good. And will you keep silent? Do not hesitate to go, to come and inherit the land. 9 And they said, “Get up, and let us go up against them. Because we saw the land, and look! it is very good. And will you remain quiet? Do not hesitate to go and enter in to inherit the land.

10 When you go, you will come to a people secure, and to a large land; for God has given it into your hands; a place where there is no want of anything that is in the earth.”

10 Whenever you enter, you will come to a trusting people, and the land is spacious, because God has delivered it in your hand, a place, where there is no lack of every matter, everything on the land.” 10 And whenever you go, you will enter in to a people in hope, and the land is wide because God has given it in your hand, a place, there where there is no lack of every matter of the things on the land.”

11 And there went from there of the family of the Danites, out of Zorah and out of Eshtaol, 600 men appointed with weapons of war.

11 And 600 men of the relatives of Dan, girded about with military equipment, set out from Saraa and Esthaol 11 And 600 men, girded with battle equipment, set out from there, from the divisions of Dan, from Saraa and from Esthaol,

12 And they went up, and camped in Kirjath-jearim, in Judah. Thus they called that place Mahaneh-Dan to this day. Notice, it is west of Kirjath-jearim.

12 and went up and encamped at Kariathiarim in Joudas. Therefore, that place is called Dan’s Camp to this day; look! it is behind Kariathiarim. 12 and went up and encamped at Kariathiarim in Joudas. Therefore it is called Dan’s Camp in that place to this day; look! it is behind Kariathiarim.

13 And they passed from there to mount Ephraim, and came to the house of Micah.

13 They proceeded from thereand came as far as the hill country of Ephraim and came as far as the house of Micha. 13 And they proceeded from there to the hill country of Ephraim and came as far as the house of Michaias.

14 Then the five men who went to spy out the country of Laish answered and said to their brothers, “Do you know that there is in these houses an ephod, and teraphim, and a carved image, and a molded image? Now therefore consider what you have to do.”

14 καὶ ἀπεκρίθησαν οἱ πέντε ἄνδρες οἱ πορευόμενοι κατασκέψασθαι τὴν γῆν καὶ εἶπαν πρὸς τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς αὐτῶν Εἰ οἴδατε ὅτι ἐν τοῖς οἴκοις τούτοις ἐφοὺδ καὶ θεραφὶν καὶ γλυπτὸν καὶ χωνευτόν;
14 καὶ ἀπεκρίθησαν οἱ πέντε ἄνδρες οἱ πεπορευμένοι κατασκέψασθαι τὴν γῆν Λαισὰ καὶ εἶπαν πρὸς τοὺς ἀδελφούς· αὐτῶν ἔγνωτε ὅτι ἔστιν ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ τούτῳ ἐφώδ, καὶ θεραφὶν καὶ γλυπτὸν καὶ χωνευτόν;
14 And the five men who were going to spy out the land answered and said to their brothers, “Do you know that in these buildings there are ephoud, theraphin, a carving and a casting? So now consider what you will do.” 14 And the five men who had gone to spy out the land of Laisa answered and said to their brothers, “Did you know that there are in this house ephod, theraphin, a carving and a casting? So now consider what you will do.”\

15 And they turned toward it, and came to the house of the young man, the Levite, even to the house of Micah, and greeted him.

15 And they turned away to that place and entered the house of the lad, the Levite, at the home of Micha, and greeted him. 15 And they turned away to that place and entered the house of the young man, the Levite, the home of Michaias, and asked him regarding peace.

16 And the 600 men armed with their weapons of war, who were of the children of Dan, stood by the entering of the gate.

16 And the 600 men who were girded around with military equipment were standing like pillars by the door at the gateway, the ones out of the sons of Dan. 16 And the 600 men who were girded up with their battle equipment were standing by the doors at the gateway, the ones out of the sons of Dan.

17 And the five men who went to spy out the land went up, and entered that place, and took the carved image, and the ephod, and the teraphim, and the molded image; and the priest stood in the entering of the gate with the 600 men who were armed with weapons of war.

17 And the five men who were going to spy out the land went up. They came there and took the carving, the ephoud, the theraphin and the casting. And the priest was standing like a pillar by the door at the gateway, and the 600 men girded around with military equipment. 17 And the five men who had gone to spy out the land went up,

18 And these went into Micah’s house, and fetched the carved image, the ephod, and the teraphim, and the molded image. Then said the priest to them, “What are you doing?”

καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτοὺς ἱερεύς Τί ὑμεῖς ποιεῖτε;
καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτοὺς ἱερεύς· τί ὑμεῖς ποιεῖτε;
18 And they went into Micha’s house and took the carving, the ephoud, the theraphin and the casting, and the priest said to them, “What are you doing?” 18 and they went in there, into Michaias’ house (and the priest was standing) and took the carving, the ephod, the theraphin and the casting, and the priest said to them, “What are you doing?”

19 And they said to him, “Hold your peace, lay your hand on your mouth, and go with us, and be to us a father and a priest. Is it better for you to be a priest to the house of one man, or that you be a priest to a tribe and a family in Israēl?”

19 καὶ εἶπαν πρὸς αὐτόν Κώφευσον ἐπίθες τὴν χεῖρά σου ἐπὶ τὸ στόμα σου καὶ ἐλθὲ μεθ’ ἡμῶν, καὶ ἔσῃ ἡμῖν εἰς πατέρα καὶ εἰς ἱερέα μὴ βέλτιον εἶναί σὲ ἱερέα· οἴκου ἀνδρὸς ἑνὸς γίνεσθαί σὲ ἱερέα φυλῆς καὶ συγγενείας ἐν Ἰσραήλ; 19 καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ· κώφευσον, ἐπίθες τὴν χεῖρά σου ἐπὶ τὸ στόμα σου καὶ δεῦρο μεθ’ ἡμῶν καὶ γενοῦ ἡμῖν εἰς πατέρα καὶ εἰς ἱερέα· μὴ ἀγαθὸν εἶναί σὲ ἱερέα οἴκου ἀνδρὸς ἑνὸς γενέσθαι σὲ ἱερέα φυλῆς καὶ οἴκου εἰς δῆμον Ἰσραήλ;
19 And they said to him, “Keep quiet! Put your hand over your mouth, and come with us, and you will be to us for a father and for a priest. It is not better that you should be priest to the house of one man than that you should become priest to a tribe and clan in Israēl?” 19 And they said to him, “Keep quiet! Put your hand over your mouth, and come here with us, and become for a father and for a priest to us. It is not good that you should be priest to the house of one man or that you should become priest to a tribe and a house for a division in Israēl?”

20 And the priest’s heart was glad, and he took the ephod, and the teraphim, and the carved image, and went among the people.

20 And the heart of the priest was glad. And he took the ephoud, the theraphin, the carving and the casting and went into the midst of the people. 20 And the heart of the priest was glad. And he took the ephod, the theraphin, the carving and the casting and went in the midst of the people.

21 So they turned and departed, and put the little ones and the cattle and the carriage before them.

21 And they turned around and departed and set the whole household and his highly valuable possession in front of them. 21 And they turned around and departed and put the children and the possession and the heavy load in front of them.

22 And when they were a good way from the house of Micah, the men who were in the houses near to Micah’s house were gathered together, and overtook the children of Dan.

22 Now when they had gone a long distance from the home of Micha, then look! Micha and the men who were with the house with Micha were crying out behind the sons of Dan. 22 They went a long distance from the home of Michaias, and look! Michaias and the men in the houses with Michaias’ house raised a shout and caught up with the sons of Dan.

23 And they cried to the children of Dan. And they turned their faces, and said to Micah, “What's wrong with you, that you come with such a company?”

23 καὶ ἐπέστρεψαν οἱ υἱοὶ Δὰν τὰ πρόσωπα αὐτῶν καὶ εἶπαν πρὸς Μιχὰ Τί ἐστίν σοι, ὅτι ἔκραξας; 23 καὶ ἐπέστρεψαν τὸ πρόσωπον αὐτῶν υἱοὶ Δὰν καὶ εἶπαν τῷ Μιχαία· τί ἐστίν σοι, ὅτι ἐβόησας;
23 And the sons of Dan turned their faces around and said to Micha, “What is it to you that you called out?” 23 And the sons of Dan turned their face around and said to Michaias, “What is it to you that you shouted out?”

24 And he said, “You have taken away my gods which I made, and the priest, and you have gone away. What do I have left? And why do you say to me, ‘What's wrong with you?’ ”

24 καὶ εἶπεν Μιχὰ Ὅτι τὸ γλυπτόν μου, ἐποίησα ἐμαυτῷ, ἐλάβετε καὶ τὸν ἱερέα καὶ ἀπήλθατε· καὶ τί ἐμοὶ ἔτι;
καὶ Τί τοῦτο λέγετέ μοι τί τοῦτο κράζεις;
24 καὶ εἶπεν Μιχαίας· ὅτι τὸ γλυπτόν μου, ἐποίησα, ἐλάβετε καὶ τὸν ἱερέα καὶ ἐπορεύθητε· καὶ τί ἐμοὶ ἔτι;
καὶ τί τοῦτο λέγετε πρός με· τί κράζεις;
24 And Micha said, “Because you took my carving that I made for myself and the priest, and went away, and what have I left? And why do you say this to me, ‘Why do you call out like this?’ ” 24 And Michaias said, “Because you took my carving that I made and the priest, and departed, and what have I left? And why do you say this to me, ‘Why do you call out?’ ”

25 And the children of Dan said to him, “Don’t let your voice be heard among us, lest angry fellows attack you, and you lose your life, with the lives of your household.”

25 And the sons of Dan said to him, “Please don’t let your voice be heard with us or else men who are afflicted in soul will attack you, and you will add your life and the lives of your household.” 25 And the sons of Dan said to him, “Please don’t let your voice be heard with us or else men among us who are bitter in soul will meet up, and they will add a life and the lives of your household.”

26 And the children of Dan went their way; and when Micah saw that they were too strong for him, he turned and went back to his house.

26 And the sons of Dan went on their way. And Micha saw that they were stronger than him, and he turned away and went back to his home. 26 And the sons of Dan went on their way. And Michaias saw that they were more powerful beyond him, and he turned back to his home.

27 And they took the things which Micah had made, and the priest which he had, and came to Laish, to a people who were quiet and secure. And they smote them with the edge of the sword, and burned the city with fire.

27 And they took everything Micha had made and the priest who was his and came as far as Laisa, to a people quiet and trusting, and they struck them with the edge of the sword and burned down the city. 27 And sons of Dan took what Michaias had made and the priest who was his and came to Laisa, to a people quiet and trusting in hope, and they struck them with the edge of the sword and burned the city with fire.

28 And there was no deliverer, because it was far from Zidon, and they had no contact with any man; and it was in the valley that is near Beth-Rehob. And they built a city, and dwelt in it.

28 And there was none to deliver, because it was far from Sidōnians and they had no word with men. And it was in a valley that is of the house of Rhoōb. And they built the city and lived in it. 28 And there was none to rescue, because it was far from Sidōnians and they had no word with a man. And it was in the valley of the house of Rhaab. And they built the city and encamped in it.

29 And they called the name of the city Dan, after the name of Dan their father, who was born to Israēl; however the name of the city was Laish at the first.

29 And they called the name of the city Dan, according to the name of their father Dan, who was born to Israēl, and the name of the city was Lais before. 29 And they called the name of the city Dan, after the name of Dan their father, who was born to Israēl; and the name of the city was Oulamais before.

30 And the children of Dan set up the carved image; and Jonathan, the son of Gershom, the son of Manasseh, he and his sons were priests to the tribe of Dan until the day of the captivity of the land.

30 And the sons of Dan set up Micha’s carving for themselves, and Jōnathan son of Gērsōm son of Moses, he and his sons were priests for the tribe of Dan until the day of the removal from the land. 30 And the sons of Dan set up the carving for themselves, and Ionatham son of Gērsom son of Manassēs, he and his sons were priests for the tribe of Dan until the day of exile from the land.

31 And they set up Micah’s carved image, which he made, all the time that the house of God was in Shiloh.

31 And they appointed for themselves the carving of Micha that he had made, all the days that the house of God was at Sēlō. 31 And they set up for themselves the carved image which Michaias made, all the days that the house of God was in Sēlōm.
