1 Then all the sons of Israēl went out, and the congregation was gathered together as one man, from Dan even to Beersheba, with the land of Gilead, to Yahweh in Mizpeh.

1 And all the sons of Israēl came out, from Dan and up to Bērsabee, and the land of Galaad, and all the congregation assembled like one man to the Lord at Massēfa. 1 And all the sons of Israēl came out, from Dan and up to Bērsabee, and the land of Galaad, and the congregation assembled like one man before the Lord at Massēfa.

2 And the chief of all the people, even of all the tribes of Israēl, presented themselves in the assembly of the people of God, 400,000 footmen who drew a sword.

2 And the region of all the people stood, all the tribes of Israēl in the assembly of the people of God, 400,000 men, foot-soldiers drawing a sword. 2 And all the tribes of Israēl took their stand before the Lord, in an assembly of the people of God, 400,000 men, foot-soldiers, drawing a sword.

3 (Now the children of Benjamin heard that the sons of Israēl had gone up to Mizpeh.) Then the sons of Israēl said, “Tell us, how did this wickedness happen?”

καὶ ἐλθόντες εἶπαν οἱ υἱοὶ Ἰσραήλ· λαλήσατε, ποῦ ἐγένετο πονηρία αὕτη;
3 And the sons of Benjamin heard that the sons of Israēl had gone up to the Lord at Massēfa. And the sons of Israēl said, “Tell where this evil came to be.” 3 And the sons of Benjamin heard that the sons of Israēl had gone up to Massēfa. And when they came, the sons of Israēl said, “Tell where this wickedness came to be.”

4 And the Levite, the husband of the woman who was slain, answered and said, “I came into Gibeah that belongs to Benjamin, I and my concubine, to lodge.

4 And the Levite, the husband of the woman who had been murdered, answered and said, “I came to Gabaa in the territory of Benjamin, I and my concubine, to spend the night. 4 And the man, the Levite, the husband of the murdered woman, answered and said, “I came to Gabaa in the territory of Benjamin, I and my concubine, to lodge.

5 And the men of Gibeah rose against me, and surrounded the house at night, and thought to have killed me. They raped my concubine so that she is dead.

5 And the men from Gabaa rose up against me and surrounded the house at night against me. And they wanted to kill me, and they humbled my concubine and used her sexually, and she died. 5 And the men of Gabaa rose up against me and surrounded the house at night against me. They wanted to murder me, and they humbled my concubine, and she died.

6 And I took my concubine, and cut her in pieces, and sent her throughout all the country of the inheritance of Israēl; for they have committed indecency and perversion in Israēl.

6 And I took hold of my concubine and dismembered her and sent out throughout every territory of Israēl’s inheritance, because they had committed foolishness in Israēl. 6 And I grabbed my concubine and dismembered her and sent throughout every territory of the inheritance of the sons of Israēl, for they committed lewdness and an abomination in Israēl.

7 Behold, you are all sons of Israēl; give your advice and counsel here.”

7 Look! all of you, the sons of Israēl, give yourselves advice and counsel.” 7 Look! all of you, sons of Israēl, give yourselves advice and counsel there.”

8 And all the people arose as one man, saying, “None of us will go back to his tent, nor will any of us return into his home.

8 And all the people got up like one man, saying, “We will not go, a man into his tent, and we will not turn aside, a man to his house. 8 And all the people got up like one man, saying, “We will not depart, a man to his tent, and we will not turn around, a man to his house.

9 But now this is the thing that we will do to Gibeah: we will go up by lot against it.

9 And now this is the thing that we will do to Gabaa; we will go up against it by lot. 9 And now this is the thing that will be done against Gabaa; we will go up against it by lot.

10 And we will take ten men of 100 throughout all the tribes of Israēl, and 100 of 1000, and 1000 out of 10,000, to obtain supplies for the people, for what they need when they come to Gibeah of Benjamin, according to all the perversion that they have done in Israēl.”

10 And we will take ten men for a 100, and a 100 for a 1000, and a 1000 for 10,000, to bring provisions for the people, those who are going in to accomplish against Gabaa of Benjamin according to all the foolishness that they have committed in Israēl.” 10 Only, we will take ten men for a 100 for all the tribes of Israēl, and a 100 for a 1000, and a 1000 for 10,000, to bring provisions, to bring it about that they enter Gabaa of Benjamin to do to it according to all the abomination that it has committed in Israēl.”

11 So all the men of Israēl were gathered against the city, joined together as one man.

11 And every man of Israēl gathered from their cities, coming as one man. 11 And every man of Israēl gathered into the city as one man.

12 And the tribes of Israēl sent men through all the tribe of Benjamin, saying, “What is this wickedness that has been done among you?

12 Καὶ ἐξαπέστειλαν αἱ φυλαὶ Ἰσραὴλ ἄνδρας ἐν πάσῃ φυλῇ Βενιαμὶν λέγοντες Τίς κακία αὕτη γενομένη ἐν ὑμῖν; 12 Καὶ ἀπέστειλαν αἱ φυλαὶ Ἰσραὴλ ἄνδρας ἐν πάσῃ φυλῇ Βενιαμὶν λέγοντες· τίς πονηρία αὕτη γενομένη ἐν ὑμῖν;
12 And the tribes of Israēl sent out men through all the tribe of Benjamin, saying, “What evil is this that has happened among you? 12 And the tribes of Israēl sent men through all the tribe of Benjamin, saying, “What wickedness is this that has happened among you?

13 Now therefore deliver us the men, the children of Belial, who are in Gibeah, that we may put them to death, and put away the wickedness from Israēl. But the children of Benjamin would not listen to the voice of their brothers the sons of Israēl.”

13 Now then, give up the godless men in Gabaa, the sons of Belial, and we will put them to death and remove evil out of Israēl.” And the sons of Benjamin didn’t want to listen to the voice of their brothers, the sons of Israēl. 13 Now then, give up the men, sons of transgressors, those in Gabaa, and we will put them to death and clean out wickedness from Israēl.” And the sons of Benjamin weren’t pleased to listen to the voice of their brothers, sons of Israēl.

14 But the children of Benjamin gathered themselves together out of the cities to Gibeah, to go out to battle against the sons of Israēl.

18 καὶ ἀνέστησαν καὶ ἀνέβησαν εἰς Βαιθὴλ καὶ ἐπηρώτησαν ἐν τῷ θεῷ καὶ εἶπαν οἱ υἱοὶ Ἰσραὴλ Τίς ἀναβήσεται ἡμῖν ἀφηγούμενος πολεμῆσαι μετὰ Βενιαμίν;
18 καὶ ἀνέστησαν καὶ ἀνέβησαν εἰς Βαιθὴλ καὶ ἠρώτησαν ἐν τῷ θεῷ καὶ εἶπαν οἱ υἱοὶ Ἰσραήλ· τίς ἀναβήσεται ἡμῖν ἐν ἀρχῇ εἰς παράταξιν πρὸς υἱοὺς Βενιαμίν;

23 καὶ ἀνέβησαν οἱ υἱοὶ Ἰσραὴλ καὶ ἔκλαυσαν ἐνώπιον κυρίου ἕως ἑσπέρας καὶ ἐπηρώτησαν ἐν κυρίῳ λέγοντες Εἰ προσθῶ προσεγγίσαι εἰς πόλεμον μετὰ Βενιαμὶν τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ μου;

30 And Israēl drew up in battle order against Benjamin on the third day, and they deployed against Gabaa, just as once and once.[1] 30 And the sons of Israēl went up against the sons of Benjamin in the third day and joined battle against Gabaa, just as once and once.[1]

31 And the children of Benjamin went out against the people, and were drawn away from the city; and they began to smite of the people, and kill, as at other times, in the highways, of which one goes up to the house of God, and the other to Gibeah in the field, about thirty men of Israēl.

31 And the sons of Benjamin went out to meet the people, and they were drawn away out of the city, and just as once and once they began to strike down some from the people along the roads, one of which goes up to Baithēl and one goes up to Gabaa, in the fields, about 30 men in Israēl. 31 And the sons of Benjamin went out to meet the people, and they poured out of the city. And just as once and once they began to strike down some of the people as casualties along the roads, one of which goes up to Baithēl and one to Gabaa, in fields, about 30 men in Israēl.

32 And the children of Benjamin said, They are smitten down before us, as at the first. But the sons of Israēl said, “Let’s flee, and draw them from the city to the highways.”

32 And the sons of Benjamin said, “They are stumbling before us just as previously.” And the sons of Israēl said, “Let us retreat and draw them out of the city toward the roads.” 32 And the sons of Benjamin said, “They are falling before us just as at first.” And the sons of Israēl said, “Let us retreat and clear them out, away from the city toward the roads.” And so they did.

33 And all the men of Israēl rose up out of their place, and put themselves in array at Baaltamar; and the ambush men of Israēl came forth out of their places, even out of the meadows of Gibeah.

33 And every man of Israēl went up out of his place, and they mustered in Baalthamar, and the Israēlite ambush was struggling out of its place west of Gabaa. 33 And every man went up from his place, and they formed up in Baalthamar, and the Israēlite ambush was coming up from its place, from Maaragabe.

34 And there came against Gibeah 10,000 chosen men out of all Israēl, and the battle was sore; but they didn’t know that evil was near them.

34 And in front of Gabaa 10,000 selected men out of all Israēl arrived, and the war became grievous. And they didn’t realize that evil had touched them. 34 And in front of Gabaa 10,000 handpicked men from all Israēl came, and battle was grievous. And they didn’t realize that evil was coming on them.

35 And Yahweh smote Benjamin before Israēl; and the sons of Israēl destroyed of the Benjamites that day 25,100 men; all these drew the sword.

35 And the Lord routed Benjamin in front of Israēl, and the sons of Israēl destroyed 25,100 men among Benjamin in that day; all these were drawing a sword. 35 And the Lord struck down Benjamin before the sons of Israēl, and the sons of Israēl destroyed 25,100 men from Benjamin in that day; all these would draw a sword.

36 So the children of Benjamin saw that they were smitten; for the men of Israēl gave place to the Benjamites, because they trusted to the ambush men whom they had set beside Gibeah.

36 And Benjamin saw that he was routed. And a man of Israēl gave a place to Benjamin, because they were confident in the ambush that they had stationed against Gabaa. 36 And the sons of Benjamin saw that they were beaten. And a man of Israēl gave a place to Benjamin, because they were confident in the ambush that they had positioned against Gabaa.

37 And the ambush men hurried, and rushed on Gibeah; and the ambush men drew themselves along, and smote all the city with the edge of the sword.

37 And the ambush rushed forward, and they poured out against Gabaa, and the ambush advanced, and they struck the whole city with the edge of the sword. 37 And when they retreated, the ambush also moved, and they stretched out toward Gabaa, and the ambush poured out, and they struck the city with the edge of the sword.

38 Now there was an appointed sign between the men of Israēl and the ambush men, that they should make a great flame with smoke rise up out of the city.

38 And the command for a man of Israēl as regarding the ambush was that they should send up a signal of the smoke of the city. 38 And there was a sign for the sons of Israēl with the ambush in the battle, that they should send up a signal of smoke from the city.

39 And when the men of Israēl retired in the battle, Benjamin began to smite and kill of the men of Israēl about thirty persons; for they said, “Surely they are smitten down before us, as in the first battle.”

39 And they turned, a man of Israēl, in the battle, and Benjamin had begun to strike wounded in the man of Israēl, about 30 men, for they said, “But while being routed he is routed before us, just like the previous battle.” 39 And the sons of Israēl saw that the ambush had quickly seized Gabaa, and they formed up in their battle-line. And Benjamin began to strike down wounded among the men of Israēl, about 30 men, for they said, “Again they are falling with a falling before us, just like the previous battle.”

40 But when the flame began to arise up out of the city with a pillar of smoke, the Benjamites looked behind them, and, behold, the flame of the city ascended up to heaven.

40 And the signal, a pillar of smoke, began to rise out of the city, and Benjamin looked behind him, and look! the annihilation of the city went up toward the sky! 40 And the signal went up more clearly over the city, like a pillar of smoke, and Benjamin looked behind him, and look! the annihilation of the city went up to the sky!

41 And when the men of Israēl turned again, the men of Benjamin were amazed; for they saw that evil came on them.

41 And a man of Israēl turned back, and a man of Benjamin hurried, and he saw that evil had touched him. 41 And a man of Israēl turned around, and the men of Benjamin hurried, because they saw that wickedness had come to meet them.

42 Therefore they turned their backs before the men of Israēl to the way of the wilderness; but the battle overtook them; and those who came out of the cities were destroyed in their midst.

42 And they inclined before a man of Israēl in the direction of the wilderness, and the battle overtook them, and those from the cities destroyed him in their midst. 42 And in front of the sons of Israēl they looked in the direction of the wilderness and fled, and the battle overtook on them, and those from the cities were destroying them in their midst.

43 Thus they enclosed the Benjamites all around, and chased them, and trampled them down with ease over against Gibeah toward the sunrising.

43 And they cut down Benjamin, to stop him with a stopping, and they trampled him down as far as opposite Gabaa from the east. 43 And they were cutting down Benjamin, and they pursued him from Nova, at his heel, as far as opposite Gabaa to the east.

44 And there fell of Benjamin 18,000 men; all these were men of valour.

44 And there fell 18,000 men of Benjamin. With all these were powerful men. 44 And there fell 18,000 men from Benjamin, all these men of power.

45 And they turned and fled toward the wilderness to the rock of Rimmon; and they reduced 5000 men of them on the highways; and pursued hard after them to Gidom, and killed 2000 men of them.

45 And they turned and fled into the wilderness to the rock of Rhemmōn. And they gleaned 5000 men along the roads, and they clung on after him as far as Gadaam, and they struck down 2000 men of them. 45 And the rest looked around and began to flee into the wilderness to the rock of Rhemmōn. And the sons of Israēl gleaned 5000 men of them, and the sons of Israēl went down after them as far as Gedan, and they struck down 2000 men of them.

46 So that all who fell that day of Benjamin were 25,000 men who drew the sword; all these were men of valour.

46 And all those who fell in that day among Benjamin were 25,000 men who drew a sword. With all these were powerful men. 46 And all who fell that day from Benjamin were 25,000 men drawing a sword, all these men of power.

47 But 600 men turned and fled to the wilderness to the rock Rimmon, and stayed in the rock Rimmon four months.

47 And 600 turned and fled into the wilderness to the rock of Rhemmōn and remained at the rock of Rhemmōn for four months. 47 And the rest looked around and fled into the wilderness to the rock of Rhemmōn, 600 men, and they remained at the rock of Remmon for four months.

48 And the men of Israēl turned again on the children of Benjamin, and smote them with the edge of the sword, as well the men of every city, as the beast, and all that came to hand; also they set on fire to all the cities that they came to.

48 And a man of Israēl shut out the sons of Benjamin, and they struck them with the edge of the sword, from city, one after another, up to animal and up to everything that was found, into all the cities. And the cities that were found they sent off with fire. 48 And the sons of Israēl turned back against the sons of Benjamin and struck them with the edge of the sword, from the city of Methla and up to animal and up to everything that could be found, into all the cities. And the cities that were found they burned with fire.
