Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem
(Mt 21.1‑11; Lk 19.28‑40; Jn 12.12‑19)

If anyone says to you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord has need of him’; and immediately he will send him back here.” If anyone says to you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord has need of him’; and immediately he will send him back here.”
They went away and found a colt having been tied at the door, outside in the street; and they untied him. They went away and found a colt having been tied at the door, outside in the street; and they untied him.
11:5 καί τινες τῶν ἐκεῖ ἑστηκότων ἔλεγον αὐτοῖς, τί ποιεῖτε λύοντες τὸν πῶλον; 5 καί τινες τῶν ἐκεῖ ἑστηκότων ἔλεγον αὐτοῖς, τί ποιεῖτε λύοντες τὸν πῶλον;
Some of them standing there began saying to them, “What are you doing, untying the colt?” Some of them standing there began saying to them, “What are you doing, untying the colt?”
Then they spoke to them just as Jesus said, and they permitted them. Then they spoke to them just as Jesus commanded, and they permitted them.
And many spread their robes on the road, and others spread branches which they cut from the fields. And many spread their robes on the road; others cut branches from the trees and spread them upon the road.
Those who went in front and those who followed were shouting: “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord;[1] Those who went in front and those who followed were shouting: “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord;[1]
Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David; Hosanna in the highest!” Blessed is the coming kingdom in the name of the Lord of our father David; Hosanna in the highest!”
He entered Jerusalem and into the temple; and after looking around at everything, since it was already the evening hour, he left for Bethany with the twelve. Jesus entered Jerusalem and into the temple; and after looking around at everything, since it was already the evening hour, he left for Bethany with the twelve.

Cursing of the Fig Tree
(Mt 21.18‑19)

On the next day, when they had left Bethany, he became hungry. On the next day, when they had left Bethany, he became hungry.
After seeing from a distance a fig tree having leaves, he went to it. Perhaps he would find something on it; and when he came to it, he found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs. After seeing from a distance a fig tree having leaves, he went to it. Perhaps he would find something on it; and when he came to it, he found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs.
And in response to it, he said, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again!” And his disciples were listening. And response to it, Jesus said, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again!” And his disciples were listening.

Cleansing of the Temple
(Mt 21.12‑17; Lk 19.45‑48; Jn 2.13‑22)

Then they came to Jerusalem, and he entered the temple and began to throw out the ones who were selling and buying in the temple, and overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who were selling doves; Then they came to Jerusalem, and Jesus entered the temple and began to throw out the ones who were selling and buying in the temple, and overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who were selling doves;
and he would not permit that anyone should carry goods through the temple. and he would not permit that anyone should carry goods through the temple.
And he began to teach and say to them, “Is it not written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations’?[2] But you have made it a robbers’ den.” And he began to teach saying to them, “Is it not written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations’?[2] But you have made it a robbers’ den.”
The chief priests and the scribes heard, and began seeking how to destroy him; for they were afraid of him, for the whole crowd was astonished at his teaching. The scribes and the chief priests heard, and began seeking how to destroy him; for they were afraid of him, for the whole crowd was astonished at his teaching.
When evening came, they began to go out of the city. When evening came, they began to go out of the city.

Lesson from the Withered Fig Tree
(Mt 21.20‑22)

As they were passing by in the morning, they saw the fig tree withered up from the roots. As they were passing by in the morning, they saw the fig tree withered up from the roots.
After being reminded, Peter said to him, “Rabbi, look, the fig tree which you cursed has withered.” After being reminded, Peter said to him, “Rabbi, look, the fig tree which you cursed has withered.”
And in response, Jesus said to them, “Have faith in God. And in response, Jesus said to them, “Have faith in God.
Truly I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and doesn’t doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says is going to happen, it will happen for him. Truly I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’and doesn’t doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says is going to happen, it will happen for him whatever he says.
Therefore I say to you, all things for which you ask in prayer,[3] believe that you have received them, and you will have them.[4] Therefore I say to you, all things for which you ask while praying, believe that you have received them, and you will have them.[4]
Whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father who is in heaven would also forgive you your transgressions. Whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father who is in heaven would also forgive you your transgressions.
[But if you don’t forgive, neither will your Father who is in heaven forgive your transgressions.”] But if you don’t forgive, neither will your Father who is in heaven forgive your transgressions.”

Authority of Jesus Questioned
(Mt 21.23‑27; Lk 20.1‑8)

11:28 καὶ ἔλεγον αὐτῷ, ἐν ποίᾳ ἐξουσίᾳ ταῦτα ποιεῖς; τίς σοι ἔδωκεν τὴν ἐξουσίαν ταύτην ἵνα ταῦτα ποιῇς; 28 καὶ λέγουσιν αὐτῷ, ἐν ποίᾳ ἐξουσίᾳ ταῦτα ποιεῖς; καὶ τίς σοι τὴν ἐξουσίαν ταύτην ἔδωκεν, ἵνα ταῦτα ποιῇς;
and began saying to him, “By what authority are you doing these things, or who gave you this authority that you should do these things?” and began saying to him, “By what authority are you doing these things, or who gave you this authority that you should do these things?”
And Jesus said to them, “I will ask you one statement, and answer me, and then I will tell you by what authority I do these things. And when answering them, Jesus said, “I will ask you one statement, and answer me, and then I will tell you by what authority I do these things.
Was the baptism of Jōhn from heaven, or from men? Answer me.” Was the baptism of Jōhn from heaven, or from men? Answer me.”
11:31 καὶ διελογίζοντο πρὸς ἑαυτοὺς λέγοντες, ἐὰν εἴπωμεν, ἐξ οὐρανοῦ, ἐρεῖ, διὰ τί [οὖν] οὐκ ἐπιστεύσατε αὐτῷ; 31 καὶ ἐλογίζοντο πρὸς ἑαυτούς, λέγοντες, ἐὰν εἴπωμεν, ἐξ οὐρανοῦ, ἐρεῖ, διατί οὖν οὐκ ἐπιστεύσατε αὐτῷ;
They began reasoning among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say, ‘Then why did you not believe him?’ They began reasoning among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say, ‘Then why did you not believe him?’
But shall we say, ‘From men’?” – They were afraid of the crowd, for everyone considered Jōhn to have been a real prophet. But if we say, ‘From men....’ ” They were afraid of the people, for everyone considered Jōhn to have been a real prophet.
In response to Jesus, they said, “We don’t know.” And Jesus said to them, “Nor will I tell you by what authority I do these things.” In response to Jesus, they said, “We don’t know.” And in response, Jesus said to them, “Nor will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”
