God Will Remove the Leaders
1 For, behold, the Lord, Yahweh of armies, takes away from Jerusalem and from Judah the stay and the staff, the whole stay of bread, and the whole stay of water,
1 Look! now the Sovereign Lord Sabaōth will take away from Judea and from Jerousalēm a strong man and a strong woman, strength of bread and strength of water, | 1 Look! now the Sovereign Lord Sabaōth will take away from Judea and from Jerousalēm a strong man and a strong woman, strength of bread and strength of water, |
2 The mighty man, and the man of war, the judge, and the prophet, and the prudent, and the ancient,
2 a giant one and a strong one and a man of war and a judge and a prophet and a diviner and an elder, | 2 a giant one and a strong one and a man of war and a judge and a prophet and a diviner and an elder, |
3 The captain of 50, and the honourable man, and the counseller, and the cunning artificer, and the eloquent orator.
3 an officer of fifty and a wonderful advisor and a skillful builder and an intelligent listener. | 3 an officer of fifty and a wonderful advisor and a skillful builder and an intelligent listener. |
4 And I will give children to be their princes, and babes shall rule over them.
4 And I will set up youngsters as their leaders, and mockers shall be lords of them. | 4 And I will set up youngsters as their leaders, and mockers shall be lords of them. |
5 And the people shall be oppressed, everyone by another, and everyone by his neighbour: the child shall behave himself proudly against the ancient, and the base against the honourable.
5 And the people will collapse together, man against man, and a man against his neighbor; the child will stumble against the elder, the dishonoured against the honourable. | 5 And the people will collapse together, man against man, and a man against his neighbor; the child will stumble against the elder, the dishonoured against the honourable. |
6 When a man shall take hold of his brother of the house of his father, saying, You have clothing, be our ruler, and let this ruin be under your hand.
6 Because a man will seize his brother or his father’s relative, saying, “You have a cloak; you be our leader, and let my food be under you.” | 6 Because a man will seize his brother or his father’s relative, saying, “You have a cloak; you be our leader, and let my food be under you.” |
7 In that day he shall swear, saying, I won’t be a healer; for in my house is neither bread nor clothing: make me not a ruler of the people.
7 And on that day, he will answer and say, “I won’t be your leader, for in my house there is neither bread nor clothing; I won’t be the leader of this people,” | 7 And on that day, he will answer and say, “I won’t be your leader, for in my house there is neither bread nor clothing; I won’t be the leader of this people,” |
8 For Jerusalem is ruined, and Judah is fallen: because their tongue and their doings are against Yahweh, to provoke the eyes of his glory.
8 because Jerousalēm has been destroyed and Judea has collapsed together and their tongues are with lawlessness, being disobedient toward the things of the Lord; now therefore their glory has been brought low. | 8 because Jerousalēm has been destroyed and Judea has collapsed together and their tongues are with lawlessness, being disobedient toward the things of the Lord; now therefore their glory has been brought low. |
9 The show of their countenance does witness against them; and they declare their sin as Sodom, they hide it not. Woe to their soul! for they have rewarded evil to themselves.

9 And the shame of their face has opposed them; they have proclaimed their sin like that of Sodoma, and they have made it clear. Woe to their soul! Because they have advised evil advice against themselves, | 9 And the shame of their face has opposed them; they have proclaimed their sin like that of Sodoma, and they have made it clear. Woe to their soul! Because they have advised evil advice against themselves, |
10 Say you to the righteous, that it shall be well with him; for they shall eat the fruit of their doings.
10 saying, “Let us bind the just, because he is an irritant to us.” Therefore they shall eat the fruit of their works. | 10 saying, “Let us bind the just, because he is an irritant to us.” Therefore they shall eat the fruit of their works. |
11 Woe to the wicked! it shall be ill with him; for the reward of his hands shall be given him.
11 Woe to the lawless one! Evil things will happen to him according to the works of his hands. | 11 Woe to the lawless one! Evil things will happen to him according to the works of his hands. |
12 As for my people, children are their oppressors, and women rule over them. Oh my people, they which lead you cause you to err, and destroy the way of your paths.
12 Oh my people, your extortioners strip you clean, and your creditors lord it over you. Oh my people, those who congratulate you mislead you and confuse the path of your feet. | 12 Oh my people, your extortioners strip you clean, and your creditors lord it over you. Oh my people, those who congratulate you mislead you and confuse the path of your feet. |
God Will Judge
13 Yahweh stands up to plead, and stands to judge the people.
13 But now the Lord will stand up to judge, and he will make his people stand to judge them. | 13 But now the Lord will stand up to judge, and he will make his people stand to judge them. |
14 Yahweh will enter into judgment with the ancients of his people, and the princes of it; for you have eaten up the vineyard; the spoil of the poor is in your houses.

14 The Lord himself will enter into judgment with the elders of the people and with their leaders. But you, why have you burned up my vineyard, and why is the spoil of the poor in your homes? | 14 The Lord himself will enter into judgment with the elders of the people and with their leaders. But you, why have you burned up my vineyard, and why is the spoil of the poor in your homes? |
15 What do you mean who beat my people to pieces, and grind the faces of the poor? Says Adonai Yahweh of armies.
15 Why do you wrong my people and shame the face of the poor? | 15 Why do you wrong my people, and shame the face of the poor? |
Judah’s Women Denounced
16 Moreover Yahweh says, Because the daughters of Zion are haughty, and walk with stretched forth necks and wanton eyes, walking and mincing as they go, and making a tinkling with their feet.
16 This is what the Lord says. Because the daughters of Siōn were lifted up and walked with an lofty neck and with a wink of eyes, all the while flouncing their clothes to the rhythm of their feet, all the while being playful with their feet; | 16 This is what the Lord says. Because the daughters of Siōn were lifted up and walked with a lofty neck and with a wink of eyes, all the while flouncing their clothes to the rhythm of their feet, all the while being playful with their feet; |
17 Therefore Yahweh will smite with a scab the crown of the head of the daughters of Zion, and Yahweh will discover their secret parts.
17 God will humble the leading daughters of Siōn, and the Lord will expose their form; | 17 God will humble the leading daughters of Siōn, and the Lord will expose their form; |
18 In that day the Lord will take away the bravery of their tinkling ornaments about their feet, and their cauls, and their round tires like the moon,
18 In that day the Lord will also take away the glory of their clothing and their ornaments and the hair clasps and the tassels and the crescents, | 18 In that day the Lord will also take away the glory of their clothing and their ornaments and the hair clasps and the tassels and the crescents, |
19 The chains, and the bracelets, and the mufflers,
19 and the necklace and the ornaments of their face, | 19 and the necklace and the ornaments of their face, |
20 The bonnets, and the ornaments of the legs, and the headbands, and the tablets, and the earrings,

22 and the negligee throughout the home and the transparent Laconian fabrics | 22 and the negligee throughout the home and the transparent Laconian fabrics |
23 The glasses, and the fine linen, and the hoods, and the vails.

24 And it will happen, that instead of sweet smell there shall be stink; and instead of a girdle a rent; and instead of well set hair baldness; and instead of a stomacher a girding of sackcloth; and burning instead of beauty.
24 And instead of a pleasant fragrance there will be dust, and instead of a belt you will gird yourself with a rope, and instead of a head ornament of gold you will have baldness because of your works, and instead of the coat blended with purple you will gird yourself about with sackcloth. | 24 And instead of a pleasant fragrance there will be dust, and instead of a belt you will gird yourself with a rope, and instead of a head ornament of gold you will have baldness because of your works, and instead of the coat blended with purple you will gird yourself about with sackcloth. |
25 Your men shall fall by the sword, and your mighty in the war.

And her gates shall lament and mourn; and she being desolate shall sit on the ground.
