To the chief Musician on Shoshannim, A Psalm of David.
For the end, a Psalm of David, for alternate strains. | For the end, a Psalm of David, for alternate strains. |
1 Save me, Oh God; for the waters are come in to my soul.
1 Save me, Oh God; for the waters have come in to my soul. | 1 Save me, Oh God; for the waters have come in to my soul. |
2 I sink in deep mire, where there is no standing; I am come into deep waters, where the floods overflow me.
2 I am stuck fast in deep mire, and there is no standing; I am come into the depths of the sea, and a storm has overwhelmed me. | 2 I am stuck fast in deep mire, and there is no standing; I am come into the depths of the sea, and a storm has overwhelmed me. |
3 I am weary of my crying; my throat is dried; my eyes fail while I wait for my God.
3 I am weary of crying, my throat has become hoarse; my eyes have failed by my waiting on my God. | 3 I am weary of crying, my throat has become hoarse; my eyes have failed by my waiting on my God. |
4 They who hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of my head; they who would destroy me, being my enemies wrongfully, are mighty; then I restored what I didn’t take away.
4 They who hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of my head; my enemies who persecute me unrighteously are strengthened; then I restored what I didn’t take away. | 4 They who hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of my head; my enemies who persecute me unrighteously are strengthened; then I restored what I didn’t take away. |
5 Oh God, you know my foolishness; and my sins are not hid from you.
5 Oh God, you know my foolishness; and my transgressions are not hidden from you. | 5 Oh God, you know my foolishness; and my transgressions are not hidden from you. |
6 Don’t let those who wait on you, Oh Adonai Yahweh of hosts, be ashamed for my sake; don’t let those who seek you be confounded for my sake, Oh God of Israēl.
6 Don’t let those who wait on you, Oh Lord of hosts, be ashamed on my account; don’t let those who seek you, be ashamed on my account, Oh God of Israēl. | 6 Don’t let those who wait on you, Oh Lord of hosts, be ashamed on my account; don’t let those who seek you, be ashamed on my account, Oh God of Israēl. |
7 Because for your sake I have carried reproach; shame has covered my face.
7 For I have suffered reproach for your sake; shame has covered my face. | 7 For I have suffered reproach for your sake; shame has covered my face. |
8 I am become a stranger to my brothers, and an alien to my mother’s children.
8 I became strange to my brothers, and a stranger to my mother’s children. | 8 I became strange to my brothers, and a stranger to my mother’s children. |
9 For the zeal of your house has eaten me up; and the reproaches of those who reproached you are fallen on me.
9 For the zeal of your house has eaten me up; and the reproaches of those who reproached you are fallen on me. | 9 For the zeal of your house has eaten me up; and the reproaches of those who reproached you are fallen on me. |
10 When I wept, and chastened my soul with fasting, that was to my reproach.
10 And I bowed down my soul with fasting, and that was made my reproach. | 10 And I bowed down my soul with fasting, and that was made my reproach. |
11 I made sackcloth also my garment; and I became a proverb to them.
11 And I put on sackcloth for my covering; and I became a proverb to them. | 11 And I put on sackcloth for my covering; and I became a proverb to them. |
12 They who sit in the gate speak against me; and I was the song of the drunkards.
12 They who sit in the gate talked against me, and they who drank wine sang against me. | 12 They who sit in the gate talked against me, and they who drank wine sang against me. |
13 But as for me, my prayer is to you, Oh Yahweh, in an acceptable time; Oh God, in the multitude of your mercy hear me, in the truth of your salvation.
13 But I will cry to you, Oh Lord, in my prayer; Oh God, it is a propitious time; in the multitude of your mercy hear me, in the truth of your salvation. | 13 But I will cry to you, Oh Lord, in my prayer; Oh God, it is a propitious time; in the multitude of your mercy hear me, in the truth of your salvation. |
14 Deliver me out of the mire, and let me not sink; let me be delivered from those who hate me, and out of the deep waters.
14 Save me from the mire, that I stick not in it; let me be delivered from those who hate me, and from the deep waters. | 14 Save me from the mire, that I stick not in it; let me be delivered from those who hate me, and from the deep waters. |
15 Don’t let the waterflood overflow me, neither let the deep swallow me up, and don’t let the pit shut her mouth on me.
15 Don’t let the waterflood drown me, nor let the deep swallow me up; neither let the well shut its mouth on me. | 15 Don’t let the waterflood drown me, nor let the deep swallow me up; neither let the well shut its mouth on me. |
16 Hear me, Oh Yahweh; for your lovingkindness is good; turn to me according to the multitude of your tender mercies.
16 Hear me, Oh Lord; for your mercy is good; according to the multitude of your mercies look on me. | 16 Hear me, Oh Lord; for your mercy is good; according to the multitude of your mercies look on me. |
17 And don’t hide your face from your servant; for I am in trouble; hear me speedily.
17 And don’t turn away your face from your servant; for I am afflicted; hear me speedily. | 17 And don’t turn away your face from your servant; for I am afflicted; hear me speedily. |
18 Draw near to my soul, and redeem it; deliver me because of my enemies.
18 Draw near to my soul and redeem it; deliver me because of my enemies. | 18 Draw near to my soul and redeem it; deliver me because of my enemies. |
19 You have known my reproach, and my shame, and my dishonour; my adversaries are all before you.
19 For you know my reproach, and my shame, and my confusion; all that afflict me are before you. | 19 For you know my reproach, and my shame, and my confusion; all that afflict me are before you. |
20 Reproach has broken my heart; and I am full of heaviness; and I looked for some to take pity, but there was none; and for comforters, but I found none.
20 My soul has waited for reproach and misery; and I waited for one to grieve with me, but there was none; and for one to comfort me, but I found none. | 20 My soul has waited for reproach and misery; and I waited for one to grieve with me, but there was none; and for one to comfort me, but I found none. |
21 They gave me also gall for my food; and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.
21 They gave me also gall for my food, and made me drink vinegar for my thirst. | 21 They gave me also gall for my food, and made me drink vinegar for my thirst. |
22 Let their table become a snare before them; and what should have been for their welfare, let it become a trap.
22 Let their table before them be for a snare, and for a recompense, and for a stumbling-block. | 22 Let their table before them be for a snare, and for a recompense, and for a stumbling-block. |
23 Let their eyes be darkened, that they don’t see; and make their loins continually to shake.
23 Let their eyes be darkened that they should not see; and bow down their back continually. | 23 Let their eyes be darkened that they should not see; and bow down their back continually. |
24 Pour out your indignation on them, and let your wrathful anger take hold of them.
24 Pour out your wrath on them, and let the fury of your anger take hold on them. | 24 Pour out your wrath on them, and let the fury of your anger take hold on them. |
25 Let their habitation be desolate; and let none dwell in their tents.
25 Let their habitation be made desolate; and let there be no inhabitant in their tents; | 25 Let their habitation be made desolate; and let there be no inhabitant in their tents; |
26 For they persecute him whom you have smitten; and they talk to the grief of those whom you have wounded.
26 Because they persecuted him whom you have smitten; and they have added to the grief of my wounds. | 26 Because they persecuted him whom you have smitten; and they have added to the grief of my wounds. |
27 Add iniquity to their iniquity; and let them not come into your righteousness.
27 Add iniquity to their iniquity; and let them not come into your righteousness. | 27 Add iniquity to their iniquity; and let them not come into your righteousness. |
28 Let them be blotted out of the book of the living, and not be written with the righteous.
28 Let them be blotted out of the book of the living, and let them not be written with the righteous. | 28 Let them be blotted out of the book of the living, and let them not be written with the righteous. |
29 But I am poor and sorrowful; let your salvation, Oh God, set me up on high.
29 I am poor and sorrowful; but the salvation of your countenance has helped me. | 29 I am poor and sorrowful; but the salvation of your countenance has helped me. |
30 I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving.
30 I will praise the name of my God with a song, I will magnify him with praise; | 30 I will praise the name of my God with a song, I will magnify him with praise; |
31 This also shall please Yahweh better than an ox or bullock that has horns and hoofs.
31 and this shall please God more than a young calf having horns and hoofs. | 31 and this shall please God more than a young calf having horns and hoofs. |
32 The humble shall see this, and be glad; and your heart shall live that seek God.
32 Let the poor see and rejoice; seek the Lord diligently, and you shall live. | 32 Let the poor see and rejoice; seek the Lord diligently, and you shall live. |
33 For Yahweh hears the poor, and doesn’t despise his prisoners.
33 For the Lord hears the poor, and doesn’t set at nought his fettered ones. | 33 For the Lord hears the poor, and doesn’t set at nought his fettered ones. |
34 Let the heaven and earth praise him, the seas, and everything that moves therein.
34 Let the heavens and the earth raise him, the sea, and all things moving in them. | 34 Let the heavens and the earth raise him, the sea, and all things moving in them. |
35 For God will save Zion, and will build the cities of Judah; that they may dwell there, and have it in possession.
35 For God will save Sion, and the cities of Judea shall be built; and men shall dwell there, and inherit it. | 35 For God will save Sion, and the cities of Judea shall be built; and men shall dwell there, and inherit it. |
36 The seed also of his servants shall inherit it; and they who love his name shall dwell therein.
36 And the seed of his servants shall possess it, and they who love his name shall dwell therein. | 36 And the seed of his servants shall possess it, and they who love his name shall dwell therein. |
