The Blessings of Israēl
1 Yet now hear, Oh Jacōb my servant; and Israēl, whom I have chosen.
1 But now hear, Oh Jakōb my servant and Israēl whom I have chosen. | 1 But now hear, Oh Jakōb my servant and Israēl whom I have chosen. |
2 Thus says Yahweh that made you, and formed you from the womb, which will help you; Don’t fear, Oh Jacōb, my servant; and you, Jesurun, whom I have chosen.
2 Thus says the Lord God who made you and who formed you from the womb. You will still be helped; don’t fear, Oh Jakōb my servant and the beloved Israēl whom I have chosen, | 2 Thus says the Lord God who made you and who formed you from the womb. You will still be helped; don’t fear, Oh Jakōb my servant and the beloved Israēl whom I have chosen, |
3 For I will pour water on him who is thirsty, and floods on the dry ground: I will pour my spirit on your seed, and my blessing on your offspring.
3 because I will provide water in their thirst to those who walk in a dry land; I will put my spirit on your offspring and my blessings on your children. | 3 because I will provide water in their thirst to those who walk in a dry land; I will put my spirit on your offspring and my blessings on your children. |
4 And they shall spring up as among the grass, as willows by the water courses.
4 And they shall spring up like grass in the midst of water and like a willow tree by flowing water. | 4 And they shall spring up like grass in the midst of water and like a willow tree by flowing water. |
5 One shall say, I am Yahweh’s; and another shall call himself by the name of Jacōb; and another shall subscribe with his hand to Yahweh, and surname himself by the name of Israēl.
5 This one will say, “I am God’s,” and this one will call out on the name of Jakōb; yet another will write, “I am God’s,” in the name of Israēl. | 5 This one will say, “I am God’s,” and this one will call out on the name of Jakōb; yet another will write with his hand, “I am God’s,” and call out in the name of Israēl. |
6
Thus says Yahweh the King of Israēl, and his redeemer Yahweh of armies; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God.
6 Thus says God, the king of Israēl, who rescued him, God Sabaōth. I am first, and I am after these things; other than me there is no god. | 6 Thus says God, the king of Israēl, who rescued him, God Sabaōth. I am first, and I am after these things; other than me there is no god. |
7 And who, as I, shall call, and shall declare it, and set it in order for me, since I appointed the ancient people? And the things that are coming, and shall come, let them show to them.
7

7
Who is like me? Let him stand; let him call, let him tell, and let him prepare for me, from which I have made man forever, and let them tell you the things that are coming before they come. |
7
Who is like me? Let him stand; let him call, and let him prepare for me, from which I have made man forever, and let them tell you the things that are coming before they come. |
8 Don’t fear, neither be afraid: haven’t I told you from that time, and have declared it? You are even my witnesses. Is there a God beside me? Yes, there is no God; I don’t know any.

8 Don’t hide yourselves; you didn’t pay attention from the beginning. Didn’t I tell you? You are witnesses if there is a god other than me, and they were not previously. | 8 Don’t hide yourselves or be deceived; you didn’t pay attention from the beginning. Didn’t I tell you? You are witnesses if there is a god other than me, |
The Folly of Idolatry
9
They who make a carved image are all of them vanity; and their delectable things shall not profit; and they are their own witnesses; they don’t see, nor know; that they may be ashamed.
9
All who fashion and carve are vain;
those who do the things that are in their mind, which won’t profit them.
But they will be put to shame, |
9
and they were not previously.
All who fashion and carve are vain;
those who do the things that are in their mind, which won’t profit them.
But they will be put to shame, |
10 Who has formed a god, or molten a carved image that is profitable for nothing?
10 all who fashion a god or cast useless things, | 10 all who fashion a god or cast useless things, |
11 Behold, all his fellows shall be ashamed; and the workmen, they are of men: let them all be gathered together, let them stand up; yet they shall fear, and they shall be ashamed together.
11
and all from where they came have withered and are mute from among men.
Let them all assemble and stand together; let them be humiliated and be ashamed together. |
11
and all from where they came have withered and are mute from among men.
Let them all assemble and stand together; let them be humiliated and be ashamed together. |
12 The smith with the tongs both works in the coals, and fashions it with hammers, and works it with the strength of his arms: yes, he is hungry, and his strength fails: he drinks no water, and is faint.

12 Because the craftman sharpened iron, he worked it with an axe and pierced it with a drill; he worked it with his strong arm; and he will become hungry and weak and won’t drink water. Having chosen | 12 Because the craftman sharpened iron, he worked it with an axe and pierced it with a drill; he worked it with his strong arm; and he will become hungry and weak and won’t drink water. |
13 The carpenter stretches out his rule; he marks it out with a line; he fits it with planes, and he marks it out with the surround, and makes it after the figure of a man, according to the beauty of a man; that it may remain in the house.
13 a piece of wood, a carpenter set it up with a measure and aligned it with glue; he made it like the form of a man, like a mature man, to set it up in a house. | 13 Having chosen a piece of wood, a carpenter set it up with a measure and aligned it with glue; he made it like the form of a man, like a mature man, to set it up in a house. |
14 He hews him down cedars, and takes the cypress and the oak, which he strengthens for himself among the trees of the forest: he plants an ash, and the rain nourishes it.
14 He cut a tree out of the forest, which the Lord planted and the rain made grow, | 14 He cut a tree out of the forest, which the Lord planted and the rain made grow, |
15 Then shall it be for a man to burn; for he will take of it, and warm himself; yes, he kindles it, and bakes bread; yes, he makes a god, and worships it; he makes it a carved image, and falls down to it.
15
in order that it might be for men to burn.
And after he took some of it, he warmed himself, and after he ignited it, they baked bread on them. But the rest they worked into gods, and they do obeisance to them. |
15
in order that it might be for men to burn.
And after he took some of it, he warmed himself, and after he ignited it, they baked bread on them. But the rest they worked into gods, and they do obeisance to them. |
16 He burns part of it in the fire; with part of it he eats flesh; he roasts roast, and is satisfied: yes, he warms himself, and says, Aha, I am warm, I have seen the fire.
16
Half of it he burned up in the fire, and after igniting it, they baked bread on them.
and from it they cooked meat and ate and became satisfied.
And after warming himself, he said, “I am pleased that I have been warmed and have seen the fire.” |
16
Half of it he burned up in the fire, and after igniting it, they baked bread on them.
and from it they cooked meat and ate and became satisfied.
And after warming himself, he said, “I am pleased that I have been warmed and have seen the fire.” |
17
And the residue of it he makes a god, even his carved image: he falls down to it, and worships it, and prays to it, and says, Deliver me; for you are my god.
17 The remainder he made into a engraven god and does obeisance to it, and he prays, saying, “Rescue me, because you are my god!” | 17 The remainder he made into a engraven god and does obeisance to it, and he prays, saying, “Rescue me, because you are my god!” |
18
They haven’t known nor understood; for he has shut their eyes, that they cannot see; and their hearts, that they cannot understand.
18 They didn’t know how to think, because they were blinded from seeing with their eyes and from understanding with their heart. | 18 They didn’t know how to think, because they were blinded from seeing with their eyes and from understanding with their heart. |
19 And none considers in his heart, neither is there knowledge nor understanding to say, I have burned part of it in the fire; yes, also I have baked bread on the coals of it; I have roasted flesh, and eaten it; and shall I make the residue of it an abomination? Shall I fall down to the stock of a tree?
19 And he has not considered in his heart nor considered in his soul nor known in his mind that half of it he burned in the fire and that he baked bread on its coals and cooked meat and ate and that the rest of it he made into an abomination, and they are doing obeisance to it. | 19 And he has not considered in his heart nor considered in his soul nor known in his mind that half of it he burned in the fire and that he baked bread on its coals and cooked meat and ate and that the rest of it he made into an abomination, and they are doing obeisance to it. |
20 He feeds on ashes: a deceived heart has turned him aside, that he cannot deliver his soul, nor say, Is there not a lie in my right hand?
20
Know that their heart is ashes, and they are going astray, and no one is able to rescue his soul.
Look! Won’t you say, “There is a lie in my right hand”? |
20
Know that their heart is ashes, and they are going astray, and no one is able to rescue his soul.
Look! Won’t you say, “There is a lie in my right hand”? |
God Forgives and Redeems
21 Remember these, Oh Jacōb and Israēl; for you are my servant: I have formed you; you are my servant: Oh Israēl, you shall not be forgotten of me.
21 Remember these things, Oh Jakōb and Israēl, because you are my servant; I formed you as my servant, and you, Israēl, don’t forget me. | 21 Remember these things, Oh Jakōb and Israēl, because you are my servant; I formed you as my servant, and you, Israēl, don’t forget me. |
22 I have blotted out, as a thick cloud, your transgressions, and, as a cloud, your sins: return to me; for I have redeemed you.
22 Look! For I have wiped out your acts of lawlessness like a cloud and your sins like gloom; return to me, and I will redeem you. | 22 Look! For I have wiped out your acts of lawlessness like a cloud and your sins like gloom; return to me, and I will redeem you. |
23 Sing, Oh you heavens; for Yahweh has done it: shout, you lower parts of the earth: break forth into singing, you mountains, Oh forest, and every tree in it; for Yahweh has redeemed Jacōb, and glorified himself in Israēl.
23 Rejoice, Oh heavens, because God has had mercy on Israēl; blow the trumpet, Oh foundations of the earth; shout for joy, Oh mountains, the hills and all the trees that are in them, because God has redeemed Jakōb, and Israēl will be glorified. |
24 Thus says Yahweh, your redeemer, and he who formed you from the womb, I am Yahweh that makes all things; that stretches forth the heavens alone; that spreads abroad the earth by myself;
