Feeding of the Four Thousand
(Mt 15.32‑39)

“I feel compassion for the crowd because they have remained with me already three days and don’t have anything to eat; “I feel compassion for the crowd because they have remained with me already three days and don’t have anything to eat;
and if I send them away hungry to their homes, they will faint on the way; and some of them have come from far off.” and if I send them away hungry to their homes, they will faint on the way; for some of them have come from far off.”
8:4 καὶ ἀπεκρίθησαν αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ ὅτι πόθεν τούτους δυνήσεταί τις ὧδε χορτάσαι ἄρτων ἐπ᾿ ἐρημίας; 4 καὶ ἀπεκρίθησαν αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ, πόθεν τούτους δυνήσεταί τις ὧδε χορτάσαι ἄρτων ἐπ᾿ ἐρημίας;
And his disciples answered him, “From where will anyone be able to find enough food here in this deserted place to satisfy these people?” And his disciples answered him, “From where will anyone be able to find enough food here in this deserted place to satisfy these people?”
8:5 καὶ ἠρώτα αὐτούς, πόσους ἔχετε ἄρτους;
5 καὶ ἐπηρώτα αὐτούς, πόσους ἔχετε ἄρτους;
And he was asking them, “How many loaves do you have?” And they said, “Seven.” And he was asking them, “How many loaves do you have?” And they said, “Seven.”
And he directed the crowd to lie down on the ground; and taking the seven loaves, he gave thanks and broke them, and kept giving them to his disciples in order that they might serve them, and they served them to the crowd. And he directed the crowd to lie down on the ground; and taking the seven loaves, he gave thanks and broke them, and kept giving them to his disciples in order that they might serve them, and they served them to the crowd.
They also had a few small fish; and after he had blessed them, he ordered these to be served too. They also had a few small fish; and after he had blessed them, he ordered these to be served too.
And they ate and were satisfied; and they picked up seven large baskets full of leftover fragments. And they ate and were satisfied; and they picked up seven large baskets full of leftover fragments.
About 4000 were there; and he sent them away. And the ones who had eaten were about 4000; and he sent them away.
And immediately he entered the boat with his disciples and came to the district of Dalmanutha. And immediately he entered the boat with his disciples and came to the district of Dalmanutha.

Demand for a Sign
(Mt 16.1‑4)

8:12 καὶ ἀναστενάξας τῷ πνεύματι αὐτοῦ λέγει, τί γενεὰ αὕτη ζητεῖ σημεῖον;
12 καὶ ἀναστενάξας τῷ πνεύματι αὐτοῦ λέγει, τί γενεὰ αὕτη σημεῖον ἐπιζητεῖ;
Sighing deeply in his spirit, he said, “Why does this generation seek for a sign? Truly I say to you, no sign will be given to this generation.” Sighing deeply in his spirit, he said, “Why does this generation seek for a sign? Truly I say to you, no sign will be given to this generation.”
After leaving them, he again embarked into the boat and went away to the other side. After leaving them, he again embarked into the boat and went away to the other side.

Leaven of the Pharisees and of Hērōd
(Mt 16.5‑12)

And they had forgotten to take food, and didn’t have more than one loaf in the boat with them. And they had forgotten to take food, and didn’t have more than one loaf in the boat with them.
And he was giving orders to them, saying, “Watch out! Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Hērōd.” And he was giving orders to them, saying, “Watch out! Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Hērōd.”
They were discussing with one another that they had no food. They were discussing with one another saying, “We have no food.”
8:17 καὶ γνοὺς λέγει αὐτοῖς, τί διαλογίζεσθε ὅτι ἄρτους οὐκ ἔχετε;
οὔπω νοεῖτε οὐδὲ συνίετε;
πεπωρωμένην ἔχετε τὴν καρδίαν ὑμῶν;
17 καὶ γνοὺς Ἰησοῦς λέγει αὐτοῖς, τί διαλογίζεσθε, ὅτι ἄρτους οὐκ ἔχετε;
οὔπω νοεῖτε, οὐδὲ συνίετε;
πεπωρωμένην ἔχετε τὴν καρδίαν ὑμῶν;
And upon knowing, he said to them, “Why do you discuss that you have no food? Don’t you yet perceive or understand? Has your heart been hardened? And upon knowing, Jesus said to them, “Why do you discuss that you have no food? Don’t you yet perceive or understand? Has your heart been hardened?
8:18 ὀφθαλμοὺς ἔχοντες οὐ βλέπετε καὶ ὦτα ἔχοντες οὐκ ἀκούετε;
18 ὀφθαλμοὺς ἔχοντες οὐ βλέπετε;
καὶ ὦτα ἔχοντες οὐκ ἀκούετε;
καὶ οὐ μνημονεύετε;
Having eyes, don’t you see; and having ears, don’t you hear? And don’t you remember, Having eyes, don’t you see? And having ears, don’t you hear? And don’t you remember?
8:19 ὅτε τοὺς πέντε ἄρτους ἔκλασα εἰς τοὺς πεντακισχιλίους, πόσους κοφίνους κλασμάτων πλήρεις ἤρατε;
19 ὅτε τοὺς πέντε ἄρτους ἔκλασα εἰς τοὺς πεντακισχιλίους, πόσους κοφίνους πλήρεις κλασμάτων ἤρατε;
when I broke the five loaves for the 5000, how many baskets full of fragments did you pick up?” They said to him, “Twelve.” When I broke the five loaves for the 5000, how many baskets full of fragments did you pick up?” They said to him, “Twelve.”
8:20 ὅτε τοὺς ἑπτὰ εἰς τοὺς τετρακισχιλίους, πόσων σπυρίδων πληρώματα κλασμάτων ἤρατε;
20 ὅτε δὲ τοὺς ἑπτὰ εἰς τοὺς τετρακισχιλίους, πόσων σπυρίδων πληρώματα κλασμάτων ἤρατε;
‘When I broke the seven for the 4000, how many large baskets full of fragments did you pick up?” And they said [to him], “Seven.” ‘When I broke the seven for the 4000, how many large baskets full of fragments did you pick up?” And they said, “Seven.”
8:21 καὶ ἔλεγεν αὐτοῖς, οὔπω συνίετε; 21 καὶ ἔλεγεν αὐτοῖς, πῶς οὐ συνίετε;
And he was saying to them, “Don’t you yet understand?” And he said unto them, “How is it that you don’t understand?”

Healing of a Blind Man at Bethsaida

And they came into Bēthsaida. And they brought a blind man to him and implored him that he might touch him. And they came into Bēthsaida. And they brought a blind man to him and implored him that he might touch him.
Taking the hand of the blind man, he brought him out of the village; and after spitting on his eyes and laying his hands on him, he asked him, “Do you see anything?” Taking the hand of the blind man, he brought him out of the village; and after spitting on his eyes and laying his hands on him, he asked him, “Do you see anything?”
And upon looking up, he said, “I see men, for I see them like trees, walking around.” And upon looking up, he said, “I see men, for I see them like trees, walking around.”
Afterward, he again laid his hands on his eyes; and he recovered sight and was restored and was seeing everything clearly. Afterward, he again laid his hands on his eyes; and he caused him to recover sight; and he was restored and was seeing everyone clearly.
And he sent him into his home, saying, “Don’t enter the village.” And he sent him into his house, saying, “Don’t enter the village, nor tell it to anyone in the village.”

Peter’s Declaration about Jesus
(Mt 16.13‑20; Lk 9.18‑21)

Then they told him, saying, “Jōhn the Baptist”; and others said “Ēlijah”; but others, “one of the prophets.” Then they answered, “Jōhn the Baptist”; and others “Ēlijah”; but others, “one of the prophets.”
8:29 καὶ αὐτὸς ἐπηρώτα αὐτοὺς, ὑμεῖς δὲ τίνα με λέγετε εἶναι;
29 καὶ αὐτὸς λέγει αὐτοῖς, ὑμεῖς δὲ τίνα με λέγετε εἶναι;
And he began asking them, “But who do you say that I am?” In response, Peter said to him, “You are the Christ.” And he began asking them, “But who do you say that I am?” In response, Peter said to him, “You are the Christ.”
And he rebuked them that they might tell no one about him. And he rebuked them that they might tell no one about him.

Jesus Foretells His Death and Resurrection
(Mt 16.21‑28; Lk 9.22‑27)

But turning around and seeing his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan; for you are not thinking the things of God, but the things of men.” But turning around and seeing his disciples, he rebuked Peter saying, “Get behind me, Satan; for you are not thinking the things of God, but the things of men.”
8:36 τί γὰρ ὠφελεῖ ἄνθρωπον κερδῆσαι τὸν κόσμον ὅλον καὶ ζημιωθῆναι τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ; 36 τί γὰρ ὠφελήσει ἄνθρωπον, ἐὰν κερδήσῃ τὸν κόσμον ὅλον, καὶ ζημιωθῇ τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ;
For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world, and forfeit his soul? For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?
8:37 τί γὰρ δοῖ ἄνθρωπος ἀντάλλαγμα τῆς ψυχῆς αὐτοῦ; 37  τί δώσει ἄνθρωπος ἀντάλλαγμα τῆς ψυχῆς αὐτοῦ;
For what will a man give in exchange for his soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
