And Jesus was saying to them, “Truly I say to you, there are some of those who are standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God after it has come with power.” | And Jesus was saying to them, “Truly I say to you, there are some of those who are standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God after it has come with power.” |
Transfiguration of Jesus
(Mt 17.1‑13; Lk 9.28‑36)
Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and Jacōb and Jōhn, and brought them up on a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them; | Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and Jacōb and Jōhn, and brought them up on a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them; |
and his garments became radiant and exceedingly white, as a launderer on earth is unable to whiten them. | and his garments became radiant and exceedingly white as snow, as a launderer on earth is unable to whiten. |
Ēlijah appeared to them along with Mōsēs; and they were talking with Jesus. | Ēlijah appeared to them along with Mōsēs; and they were talking with Jesus. |
And in response, Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; let us make three tents, one for you, and one for Mōsēs, and one for Ēlijah.” | And in response, Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; let us make three tents, one for you, and one for Mōsēs, and one for Ēlijah.” |
For he didn’t know what to answer; for they became frightened. | For he didn’t know what to speak; for they were frightened. |
Then a cloud happened, overshadowing them, and a voice came out of the cloud, “This is my beloved Son, hear him!” | Then a cloud happened, overshadowing them, and a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is my beloved Son, hear him!” |
And suddenly after looking around, they saw no one with them anymore but only Jesus. | And suddenly after looking around, they saw no one with them anymore but only Jesus. |
While they were coming down out of the mountain, he charged them that they might declare to no one what they had seen, until the Son of Man rose out of the dead. | While they were coming down from the mountain, he charged them that they might declare to no one what they had seen, until the Son of Man rose out of the dead. |
They retained that statement, discussing with one another what “to rise from the dead” is. | They retained that statement, discussing with one another what “to rise from the dead” is. |
They asked him, saying, “Why do the scribes say that Ēlijah must come first?” | They asked him, saying, “Why do the scribes say that Ēlijah must come first?” |
And he said to them, “When Ēlijah comes first, he restores all things. And yet how is it written concerning the Son of Man that he would suffer many things and be treated with contempt? | And in response, he said to them, “When Ēlijah comes first, he restores all things. And yet how is it written concerning the Son of Man that he would suffer many things and be treated with contempt? |
But I say to you that Ēlijah has indeed come, and they did to him whatever they wanted, just as it is written of him.” | But I say to you that Ēlijah has indeed come, and they did to him whatever they wanted, just as it is written of him.” |
Healing of a Boy with an Unclean Spirit
(Mt 17.14‑20; Lk 9.37‑43a)
When they came back to the other disciples, they saw a large crowd around them, and scribes arguing with them. | When they came back to the other disciples, they saw a large crowd around them, and scribes arguing with them. |
Immediately after seeing him, the entire crowd was amazed; and while running forward, they greeted him. | Immediately after recognizing him, the entire crowd was amazed; and while running forward, they greeted him. |
And he asked them, “What are you discussing with them?” | And he asked the scribes, “What are you discussing with them?” |
And one of the crowd answered him, “Teacher, I brought you my son who has a mute spirit; | And one of the crowd answered him, “Teacher, I brought you my son who has a mute spirit; |
and whenever it overtakes him, it tears him, and he foams and grinds his teeth and is paralyzed. I told your disciples that they should cast it out, and they were not able.” | and whenever it overtakes him, it tears him, and he foams and grinds his teeth and is paralyzed. I told your disciples that they should cast it out, and they were not able.” |
And in response to them, he said, “Oh unbelieving generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I endure you? Bring him to me!” | And in response to him, he said, “Oh unbelieving generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I endure you? Bring him to me!” |
They brought him to him. When he saw him, immediately the spirit convulsed him. And falling to the ground, he rolled about foaming at the mouth. | They brought him to him. When he saw him, immediately the spirit tore him. And falling to the ground, he rolled about foaming at the mouth. |
And he asked his father, “How long has this been happening to him?” And he said, “From childhood. | And he asked his father, “How long has this been happening to him?” And he said, “From childhood. |
And frequently it threw him into a fire and into water in order that it would destroy him. But if you are able to do anything, have compassion on us, help us!” | And frequently it threw him into a fire and into water in order that it would destroy him. But if you are able to do anything, have compassion on us, help us!” |
And Jesus said to him, “ ‘If you are able?’... All things are possible to the one who believes.” | Jesus said unto him, “If you are able to believe, all things are possible to the one who believes.” |
Immediately when calling out, the child’s father said, “I believe; help with my unbelief.” | And immediately when calling out, the child’s father with tears said, “I believe, Lord; help with my unbelief.” |
When Jesus saw that a crowd was rushing together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “You deaf and mute spirit, I command you, come out of him and never again enter him.” | When Jesus saw that a crowd was rushing together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “You deaf and mute spirit, I command you, come out of him and never again enter him.” |
After shouting and much convulsions, it came out; and he became as if a corpse so that most of them said, “He is dead!” | After shouting and greatly convulsing him, it came out; and he became as if a corpse so that many said, “He is dead!” |
But Jesus seized his hand and raised him; and he got up. | But Jesus seized his hand and raised him; and he got up. |
When he entered the house, his disciples began asking him privately, “Why were we unable to throw it out?” | When he entered the house, his disciples began asking him privately, “Why were we unable to throw it out?” |
And he said to them, “This kind is not able to come out by anything but prayer.” | And he said to them, “This kind is not able to come out by anything but prayer and fasting.” |
Jesus Again Foretells His Death and Resurrection
(Mt 17.22‑23; Lk 9.43b-45)
After going out from there, they kept going through Galilee, and he didn’t want that anyone should know about it. | After going out from there, they kept going through Galilee, and he didn’t want that anyone should know about it. |
For he began teaching his disciples and telling them, “The Son of Man is to be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him; and when he has been killed, he will rise three days later.” | For he began teaching his disciples and telling them, “The Son of Man is to be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him; and when he has been killed, he will rise in three days.” |
But they were not understanding this statement, and they were afraid to ask him. | But they were not understanding this statement, and they were afraid to ask him. |
Who is the Greatest?
(Mt 18.1‑5; Lk 9.46‑48)
They came into Capernaum; and when he was in the house, he began to question them, “What were you discussing on the way?” | They came into Capernaum; and when he was in the house, he began to question them, “What were you discussing on the way among yourselves?” |
But they kept silent, for on the way they had discussed with one another which of them was the greatest. | But they kept silent, for on the way they had discussed with one another which of them was the greatest. |
Sitting down, he called the twelve and said to them, “If anyone wants to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all.” | Sitting down, he called the twelve and said to them, “If anyone wants to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all.” |
Taking a child, he set him in the midst of them, and hugging him, he said to them, | Taking a child, he set him in the midst of them, and hugging him, he said to them, |
‘Whoever receives one of these children like this in my name receives me; and whoever receives me doesn’t receive me, but him who sent me.” | ‘Whoever receives one of these children like this in my name receives me; and whoever receives me doesn’t receive me, but him who sent me.” |
He Who is Not against Us is for Us
(Lk 9.49‑50)
Jōhn said to him, “Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we kept preventing him because he was not following us.” | Answering, Jōhn said to him, “Teacher, we saw someone who was not following us casting out demons in your name, and we kept preventing him because he was not following us.” |
But Jesus said, “Don’t prevent him, for there is no one who will do a miracle in my name, and suddenly be able to speak evil of me. | But Jesus said, “Don’t prevent him, for there is no one who will do a miracle in my name, and suddenly be able to speak evil of me. |
For he who is not against us is for us. | For he who is not against us is for us. |
For whoever gives you a cup of water to drink in my name because you are of Christ, truly I say to you, he will never lose his reward. | For whoever gives you a cup of water to drink in my name because you are of Christ, truly I say to you, he will never lose his reward. |
Temptations to Sin
(Mt 18.6‑9; Lk 17.1‑2)
Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe [in me] to stumble, it would be better for him if, having a heavy millstone hung around his neck, he had been cast into the sea. | Whoever causes one of the little ones who believe in me to stumble, it would be better for him if, having a millstone hung around his neck, he had been cast into the sea. |
