Alexandrus & VaticanusSinaiticus
1 So Tōbit made an end of praising God. Then the words of Tōbith's praise were completed.
2 And he was eight and fifty years old when he lost his sight, which was restored to him after eight years: and he gave alms, and he increased in the fear of the Lord God, and praised him. And he died in peace at one hundred twelve years, and he was buried with honour in Nineve. Now he was sixty-two years old when he became maimed in his eyes, and after he saw again he lived in prosperity and gave alms. And he still continued to bless God and to acknowledge the majesty of God.
3 And when he was very aged he called his son, and the sons of his son, and said to him, My son, take your children; for, behold, I am aged, and am ready to depart out of this life. Now when he was about to die, he called Tōbias his son and commanded him, saying: “My child, take your children,
4 Go into Mēdia my son, for I surely believe those things which Jonas the prophet spake of Nineve, that it shall be overthrown; and that for a time peace shall rather be in Mēdia; and that our brothers shall lie scattered in the earth from that good land: and Jerusalem shall be desolate, and the house of God in it shall be burned, and shall be desolate for a time; and hurry off into Mēdia, for I believe the word of God about Nineve, the things Naoum spoke, that all these things will come about and happen to Athour and Nineve. Also everything that the prophets of Israēl spoke, those whom God sent, will happen. And not one of all their words will fail, but all will come true at their appointed times. So in Mēdia there will be safety rather than among the Assyrians or in Babylon. For I know and believe that all things that God said will be fulfilled and will come to pass, and no utterance of his words shall fail. And our kindred, who live in the land of Israēl, all will be scattered and taken as captives from the good land, and the whole land of Israēl will be desolate, even Samaria and Jerousalem will be desolate. And the house of God will be in grief and will be burned down for a time.
5 And that again God will have mercy on them, and bring them again into the land, where they shall build a temple, but not like to the first, until the time of that age be fulfilled; and afterward they shall return from all places of their captivity, and build up Jerusalem gloriously, and the house of God shall be built in it for ever with a glorious building, as the prophets have spoken thereof. “But again God will have mercy on them, and God will bring them back into the land of Israēl, and again they will build the house, but not like the first one, until the time when the time of the appointed times will be completed. Then after this they all will return from their captivity, and they will build Jerousalem honourably. And the house of God will be built in it, just as the prophets of Israēl said concerning it.
7 So shall all nations praise the Lord, and his people shall confess God, and the Lord shall exalt his people; and all those which love the Lord God in truth and justice shall rejoice, shewing mercy to our brothers. All the sons of Israēl who are saved in those days, mindful of God in truth, will be gathered together. And they will go into Jerousalem and live forever in the land of Abraam with security, and it will be given over to them. And those who love God in truth will rejoice, but those who commit sin and injustice will vanish from all the earth.
8 And now, my son, depart out of Nineve, because that those things which the prophet Jonas spake shall surely come to pass. 9 But keep you the law and the commandments, and shew yourself merciful and just, that it may go well with you. “So now, my children, I command you, serve God in truth, and do what is pleasing before him. Also your children are to be commanded to practice righteousness and almsgiving and to be mindful of God and bless his name at every moment in truth and with all their strength. “So now, my child, go out from Nineve, and do not remain here. On the day you bury your mother with me, on that day do not spend the night within its borders. For I see that there is much injustice within it and that much deceit is accomplished within it, and they are not ashamed.
10 And bury me decently, and your mother with me; but tarry no longer at Nineve. Remember, my son, how Aman handled Achicharos that brought him up, how out of light he brought him into darkness, and how he rewarded him again: yet Achicharos was saved, but the other had his reward: for he went down into darkness. Manasses gave alms, and escaped the snares of death which they had set for him: but Aman fell into the snare, and perished. See, my child, what Nadab did to Achikaros who had reared him. Was he not, while still alive, brought down into the earth? And God repaid the dishonour to his face. Now Achikaros came out into the light, but Nadab went into the everlasting darkness, because he sought to kill Achikaros. Because he gave alms, he came out of the death trap that Nadab had set for him, but Nadab fell into the death trap himself, and it destroyed him.
11 Wherefore now, my son, consider what alms doeth, and how righteousness doth deliver. When he had said these things, he gave up the ghost in the bed, being an hundred and eight and fifty years old; and he buried him honourably. So now, my children, see what almsgiving does and what injustice does: it kills! But behold, my soul is about to leave.” Then they laid him on the bed, and he died, and he was buried honourably.
13 Where he became old with honour, and he buried his father and mother in law honourably, and he inherited their substance, and his father Tōbit’s. He tended to them respectfully in their old age, and he buried them at Ecbatana in Mēdia. Then he inherited the house of Ragouēlos and that of Tōbith his father.
14 And he died at Ecbatane in Mēdia, being an hundred and seven and twenty years old. Then he died honourably at the age of one hundred seventeen years.
15 But before he died he heard of the destruction of Nineve, which was taken by Nabuchodonosor and Assuerus: and before his death he rejoiced over Nineve. And before he died he saw and heard of the destruction of Nineve, and he saw its captivity being led into Mēdia, which Achiacharos, the king of Mēdia, had taken captive. And he blessed God for all the things that he had done to the sons of Nineve and Athouria; before he died he rejoiced over Nineve, and he blessed the Lord God forever and ever.
