top Tobit ch 5

Chapter 5

Alexandrus & VaticanusSinaiticus
1 Tōbias then answered and said, “Father, I will do all things which you have commanded me: Then in reply Tōbias said to Tōbith his father, “Everything that you have commanded me I shall do, father.
2 But how can I receive the money, seeing I know him not?” But how can I get it from him; indeed, he does not know me, nor do I know him? What sign shall I give him, so he will recognize me and believe me and give me the silver? Also, I do not know the roads into Mēdia in order to go there.”
3 Then he gave him the handwriting, and said unto him, “Seek a man who may go with you, while I yet live, and I will give him wages: and go and receive the money.” Then in reply Tōbith said to Tōbias his son, “He gave me his bond, and I gave him my bond. And I divided it into two, and we each took one part, and I put it in with the silver. And now behold, it is twenty years since I placed this silver in trust. So now, my child, seek for yourself a trustworthy man who will go with you, and we will give him wages until you come. But get this silver from him.”
4 Therefore when he went to seek a man, he found Raphaēl who was an angel. But he knew not; So Tōbias went out to seek a man who would go with him into Mēdia, who was acquainted with the road. And he went out and found Raphaēl the angel standing in front of him, but he did not know that he was an angel of God.
5 And he said unto him, Can you go with me to Rhaga of Mēdia? and do you know those places well? And he said to him, “Where are you from, young man?” And he said to him, “From the sons of Israēl, your kindred, and I have come here to work.” Then he said to him, “Do you know the road to go into Mēdia?”
6 To whom the angel said, I will go with you, and I know the way well: for I have lodged with our brother Gabaēl. And he said to him, “Yes, I have been there many times; I am acquainted with and know all the roads. Often I went into Mēdia, and I stayed with Gabaēl our kinsman who dwells in Rhaga of Mēdia. Now it is a journey of two days from Ecbatana into Rhaga, for it lies in the mountain, Ecbatana in the middle of the plain.”
7 Then Tōbias said unto him, “Wait for me, till I tell my father.” Then he said to him, “Wait for me, young man, until I go in and tell my father, for I need you to go with me, and I will give you your wages.”
8 Then he said unto him, Go and don't delay. And he said, “Behold, I will stay; only do not delay.”
9 So he went in and said to his father, “Behold, I have found one who will go with me.” Then he said, “Call him unto me, that I may know of what tribe he is, and whether he be a trusty man to go with you.” So Tōbias went in to tell Tōbith his father and said to him, “Behold, I found a man of our kindred, of the sons of Israēl!” And he said to him, “Call the man for me so that I may find out what is his race and to what tribe he belongs and if he is trustworthy so that he may go with you, my child.”
10 So he called him, and he came in, and they saluted one another. Then Tōbias went out and called him and said to him, “Young man, my father is calling you.” So he went in to him, and Tōbith greeted him first. And he said to him, “Many joyful greetings to you!” But in reply Tōbith said to him, “What is there for me still to be joyful about? Now I am a man with no power in my eyes, and I do not see the light of heaven, but I lie in darkness like the dead who no longer look at the light. Living, I am among the dead. I hear the voice of people, but I do not see them.” So he said to him, “Take courage; the time is near for God to heal you; take courage.” Then Tōbith said to him, “Tōbias my son wishes to go into Mēdia. Can you go along with him and lead him? And I will give you your wages, brother.” And he said to him, “I can go with him; indeed, I know all the roads. Also I went into Mēdia many times, and I crossed all its plains, and I know its mountains and all its roads.”
11 Then Tōbit said unto him, “Brother, show me of what tribe and family you are.” Then he said to him, “Brother, of what family are you and from what tribe? Tell me, brother.”
12 To whom he said, “Do you seek a tribe or family, or an hired man to go with your son?” Then Tōbit said unto him,“ I would know, brother, your kindred and name.” And he said, “Why, do you need a tribe?” And he said to him, “I want to know the truth about whose son you are, brother, and what your name is.”
13 Then he said, “I am Azarias, the son of Ananias the great, and of your brothers.” So he said to him, “I am Azarias son of Ananias the great, one of your relatives.”
14 Then Tōbit said, “You are welcome, brother; be not now angry with me, because I have inquired to know your tribe and your family; for you are my brother, of an honest and good stock: for I know Ananias and Jonathas, sons of that great Samaias, as we went together to Jerusalem to worship, and offered the firstborn, and the tenths of the fruits; and they were not seduced with the error of our brothers: my brother, you are of a good stock.” Then he said to him, “Come in, brother, in good health and safety! And do not be bitter toward me, brother, because I wanted to know the truth about your family also. Now you happen to be a relative, and you are of a noble and good lineage. I knew Ananias and Nathan, the two sons of Semelias the great, and they would go with me into Jerousalem and do obeisance with me there, and they did not err. Your relatives are good people; you are of good stock. So come in with joy!”
15 “But tell me, what wages shall I give you? will you a drachma a day, and things necessary, as to mine own son? Then he said to him, “I will give you a drachma a day as wages, and what is needed for you as well as for my son.
16 Yea, moreover, if you return safe, I will add something to your wages.” So go with my son. I will also add more to your wages.”
17 So they were well pleased. Then said he to Tōbias, “Prepare yourself for the journey, and God send you a good journey. ”And when his son had prepared all things for the journey, his father said, “Go you with this man, and may God, who dwells in heaven, prosper your journey, and the angel of God keep you company.” So they went forth both, and the young man’s dog with them. And he said to him, “I shall go with him; so do not fear. We shall go away in good health, and we shall return to you in good health, because the road is safe.” So he said to him, “Blessing be upon you, brother.” Then he called his son and said to him, “My child, prepare the things for the journey, and go out with your brother. And may God in heaven bring you safely there and restore you back to me in good health, and may his angel journey along with you in safety, my child.” And he went out to go on his journey, and he kissed his father and mother. Then Tōbith said to him, “Go in good health.”
19 Be not greedy to add money to money: but let it be as refuse in respect of our child. Do not add silver to silver, but let it be a ransom for our child.
20 For that which the Lord has given us to live with is enough for us.” For as it has been given to us to live by the Lord, that is enough.”
21 Then said Tōbit to her, “Take no care, my sister; he shall return in safety, and your eyes shall see him. And he said to her, “Do not worry; our child will go in good health and come back to us in good health. And your eyes will see him on the day when he comes back to you in good health.
22 For the good angel will keep him company, and his journey shall be prosperous, and he shall return safe.” Do not worry! Do not fear for them, my sister. For a good angel will accompany him, and his journey will be successful, and he will come back in good health.”
23 Then she made an end of weeping. So she stopped weeping.
