| 1 οἱ δὲ πορευόμενοι τὴν ὁδὸν ἦλθον ἑσπέρας ἐπὶ τὸν Τίγριν ποταμὸν καὶ ηὐλίζοντο ἐκεῖ. | 1 καὶ ἐξῆλθεν τὸ παιδίον καὶ ὁ ἄγγελος μετ᾿ αὐτοῦ καὶ ὁ κύων ἐξῆλθεν μετ᾿ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐπορεύθη μετ᾿ αὐτῶν καὶ ἐπορεύθησαν ἀμφότεροι καὶ ἔτυχεν αὐτοῖς νὺξ μία καὶ ηὐλίσθησαν ἐπὶ τοῦ Τίγριδος ποταμοῦ |
| 1 And as they went on their journey, they came in the evening to the river Tigris, and they lodged there. | Then the child went out, and the angel with him, and the dog went out with him and walked with them. And they both walked, and the first night came upon them, and they camped by the Tigris River. |
| 2 τὸ δὲ παιδάριον κατέβη περικλύσασθαι, καὶ ἀνεπήδησεν ἰχθὺς ἀπὸ τοῦ ποταμοῦ καὶ ἐβουλήθη καταπιεῖν τὸ παιδάριον. | 2 καὶ κατέβη τὸ παιδίον περινίψασθαι τοὺς πόδας εἰς τὸν Τίγριν ποταμόν καὶ ἀναπηδήσας ἰχθὺς μέγας ἐκ τοῦ ὕδατος ἐβούλετο καταπιεῖν τὸν πόδα τοῦ παιδαρίου καὶ ἔκραξεν |
| 2 And when the young man went down to wash himself, a fish leaped out of the river, and would have devoured him. | Then the child went down to wash his feet in the Tigris River. And a large fish, leaping up from the water, wanted to swallow the foot of the young man, and he cried out. |
| 3 ὁ δὲ ἄγγελος εἶπεν αὐτῷ ἐπιλαβοῦ τοῦ ἰχθύος. καὶ ἐκράτησεν τὸν ἰχθὺν τὸ παιδάριον καὶ ἀνέβαλεν αὐτὸν ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν. | 3 καὶ ὁ ἄγγελος τῷ παιδαρίῳ εἶπεν ἐπιλαβοῦ καὶ ἐγκρατὴς τοῦ ἰχθύος γενοῦ καὶ ἐκράτησεν τὸ παιδάριον τοῦ ἰχθύος καὶ ἀνήνεγκεν αὐτὸν ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν |
| 3 Then the angel said unto him, “Take the fish.” And the young man laid hold of the fish, and drew it to land. | Then the angel said to the young man, “Take hold of the fish, and hang on!” So the child seized the fish and carried it up onto the land. |
| 4 καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ ὁ ἄγγελος ἀνάτεμε τὸν ἰχθὺν καὶ λαβὼν τὴν καρδίαν καὶ τὸ ἧπαρ καὶ τὴν χολὴν θὲς ἀσφαλῶς. | 4 καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ ὁ ἄγγελος ἀνάσχισον τὸν ἰχθὺν καὶ ἔξελε τὴν χολὴν καὶ τὴν καρδίαν καὶ τὸ ἧπαρ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀπόθες αὐτὰ μετὰ σαυτοῦ καὶ τὰ ἔγκατα ἔκβαλε ἔστιν γὰρ εἰς φάρμακον χρήσιμον ἡ χολὴ καὶ ἡ καρδία καὶ τὸ ἧπαρ αὐτοῦ |
| 4 To whom the angel said, “Open the fish, and take the heart and the liver and the gall, and put them up safely.” | Then the angel said to him, “Rip open the fish, and take out its gall and heart and liver, and put them aside with you, but the entrails throw away. For its gall and heart and liver are useful as medicine.” |
| 5 καὶ ἐποίησεν τὸ παιδάριον ὡς εἶπεν αὐτῷ ὁ ἄγγελος, τὸν δὲ ἰχθὺν ὀπτήσαντες ἔφαγον. | 5 καὶ ἀνασχίσας τὸ παιδάριον τὸν ἰχθὺν συνήγαγεν τὴν χολὴν καὶ τὴν καρδίαν καὶ τὸ ἧπαρ καὶ ὤπτησεν τοῦ ἰχθύος καὶ ἔφαγεν καὶ ἀφῆκεν ἐξ αὐτοῦ ἡλισμένον |
| 5 So the young man did as the angel commanded him; and when they had roasted the fish, they ate it: | So cutting open the fish, the young man gathered together the gall and heart and liver; then he roasted and ate some of the fish and kept some of it salted. |
| 6 καὶ ὥδευον ἀμφότεροι, ἕως ἤγγισαν ἐν Ἐκβατάνοις. | 6 καὶ ἐπορεύθησαν ἀμφότεροι κοινῶς ἕως ἤγγισαν εἰς Μηδίαν |
| 6 then they both went on their way, till they drew near to Ecbatane. | And the two walked together until they drew near to Mēdia. |
| 7 καὶ εἶπεν τὸ παιδάριον τῷ ἀγγέλῳ Ἀζαριά ἄδελφε, τί ἐστιν τὸ ἧπαρ καὶ ἡ καρδία καὶ ἡ χολὴ τοῦ ἰχθύος; | 7 καὶ τότε ἠρώτησεν τὸ παιδάριον τὸν ἄγγελον καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ἀζαριά ἄδελφε τί τὸ φάρμακον ἐν τῇ καρδίᾳ καὶ τῷ ἥπατι τοῦ ἰχθύος καὶ ἐν τῇ χολῇ |
| 7 Then the young man said to the angel, “Brother Azarias, to what use is the heart and the liver and the gall of the fish?” | And then the young man asked the angel and said to him, “Brother Azarias, what is the medicine in the fish’s heart and liver and in the gall?” |
| 8 καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ ἡ καρδία καὶ τὸ ἧπαρ, ἐάν τινα ὀχλῇ δαιμόνιον ἢ πνεῦμα πονηρόν, ταῦτα δεῖ καπνίσαι ἐνώπιον ἀνθρώπου ἢ γυναικός, καὶ οὐκέτι οὐ μὴ ὀχληθῇ· | 8 καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ ἡ καρδία καὶ τὸ ἧπαρ τοῦ ἰχθύος κάπνισον ἐνώπιον ἀνθρώπου ἢ γυναικός ᾧ ἀπάντημα δαιμονίου ἢ πνεύματος πονηροῦ καὶ φεύξεται ἀπ᾿ αὐτοῦ πᾶν ἀπάντημα καὶ οὐ μὴ μείνωσιν μετ᾿ αὐτοῦ εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα |
| 8 And he said unto him, “Touching the heart and the liver, if a demon or an evil spirit trouble any, we must make a smoke thereof before the man or the woman, and the party shall be no more vexed. | And he said to him, “As for the fish’s heart and liver, burn them to smoke in the presence of a man or woman afflicted by a demon or evil spirit, and every affliction will flee away from him and will not remain with him any longer. |
| 9 ἡ δὲ χολή, ἐγχρῖσαι ἄνθρωπον, ὃς ἔχει λευκώματα ἐν τοῖς ὀφθαλμοῖς, καὶ ἰαθήσεται. | 9 καὶ ἡ χολή ἐγχρῖσαι ἀνθρώπου ὀφθαλμούς οὗ λευκώματα ἀνέβησαν ἐπ᾿ αὐτῶν ἐμφυσῆσαι ἐπ᾿ αὐτοὺς ἐπὶ τῶν λευκωμάτων καὶ ὑγιαίνουσιν |
| 9 As for the gall, it is good to anoint a man who has whiteness in his eyes, and he shall be healed.” | And as for the gall, anoint a person’s eyes on which white films have come up; blow upon them, upon the white films, and they will be healed.” |
| 10 ὡς δὲ προσήγγισαν τῇ Ῥάγη, | 10 καὶ ὅτε εἰσῆλθεν εἰς Μηδίαν καὶ ἤδη ἤγγιζεν εἰς Ἐκβάτανα |
| 10 And when they were come near to Rhaga, | And when he went into Mēdia and already drew near to Ecbatana, |
| 11 εἶπεν ὁ ἄγγελος τῷ παιδαρίῳ ἄδελφε, σήμερον αὐλισθησόμεθα παρὰ Ῥαγουήλ, καὶ αὐτὸς συγγενής σου ἐστιν, καὶ ἔστιν αὐτῷ θυγάτηρ μονογενὴς ὀνόματι Σάρρα· | 11 λέγει Ῥαφαὴλ τῷ παιδαρίῳ Τωβία ἄδελφε καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ ἰδοὺ ἐγώ καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ ἐν τοῖς Ῥαγουήλου τὴν νύκτα ταύτην δεῖ ἡμᾶς αὐλισθῆναι καὶ ὁ ἄνθρωπος συγγενής σου ἐστιν καὶ ἔστιν αὐτῷ θυγάτηρ ᾗ ὄνομα Σάρρα |
| 11 The angel said to the young man, Brother, to day we shall lodge with Ragouēl, who is your cousin; he also hath one only daughter, named Sarra; | Raphaēl said to the young man, “Brother Tōbias.” And he said to him, “Here I am.” Then he said to him, “This night we must stay in the home of Ragouēlos. Now the man is your relative, and he has a beautiful daughter whose name is Sarra. |
| 12 λαλήσω περὶ αὐτῆς τοῦ δοθῆναί σοὶ αὐτὴν εἰς γυναῖκα, ὅτι σοὶ ἐπιβάλλει ἡ κληρονομία αὐτῆς, καὶ σὺ μόνος εἶ ἐκ τοῦ γένους αὐτῆς· καὶ τὸ κοράσιον καλὸν καὶ φρόνιμόν ἐστιν. | 12 καὶ υἱὸς ἄρσην οὐδὲ θυγάτηρ ὑπάρχει αὐτῷ πλὴν Σάρρας μόνης καὶ σὺ ἔγγιστα αὐτῆς εἶ παρὰ πάντας ἀνθρώπους κληρονομῆσαι αὐτήν καὶ τὰ ὄντα τῷ πατρὶ αὐτῆς σοὶ δικαιοῦται κληρονομῆσαι καὶ τὸ κοράσιον φρόνιμον καὶ ἀνδρεῖον καὶ καλὸν λίαν καὶ ὁ πατὴρ αὐτῆς καλός |
| 12 I will speak for her, that she may be given you for a wife. For to you doth the right of her appertain, seeing you only art of her kindred. And the maid is fair and wise: | And he has no male son or daughter except Sarra alone, and you are closer to her than all other men, to have her as an inheritance. And it is right for you to have her father’s possessions as an inheritance. Also the girl is sensible and brave and very beautiful, and her father is noble.” |
| 13 καὶ νῦν ἄκουσόν μου καὶ λαλήσω τῷ πατρὶ αὐτῆς, καὶ ὅταν ὑποστρέψωμεν ἐκ Ῥάγων, ποιήσομεν τὸν γάμον. διότι ἐπίσταμαι Ῥαγουὴλ ὅτι οὐ μὴ δῷ αὐτὴν ἀνδρὶ ἑτέρῳ κατὰ τὸν νόμον Μωυσῇ ἢ ὀφειλέσει θάνατον, ὅτι τὴν κληρονομίαν σοὶ καθήκει λαβεῖν ἢ πάντα ἄνθρωπον. | 13 καὶ εἶπεν δεδικαίωταί σοὶ λαβεῖν αὐτήν καὶ ἄκουσόν μου ἄδελφε καὶ λαλήσω τῷ πατρὶ περὶ τοῦ κορασίου τὴν νύκτα ταύτην ἵνα λημψόμεθά σοὶ αὐτὴν νύμφην καὶ ὅταν ἐπιστρέψωμεν ἐκ Ῥάγων ποιήσομεν τὸν γάμον αὐτῆς καὶ ἐπίσταμαι ὅτι οὐ μὴ δυνηθῇ Ῥαγουὴλ κωλῦσαι αὐτὴν ἀπὸ σοῦ ἢ ἐγγυᾶσθαι ἑτέρῳ ὀφειλήσειν θάνατον κατὰ τὴν κρίσιν τῆς βίβλου Μωυσέως διὰ τὸ γινώσκειν ὅτι σοὶ κληρονομία καθήκει λαβεῖν τὴν θυγατέρα αὐτοῦ παρὰ πάντα ἄνθρωπον καὶ νῦν ἄκουσόν μου ἄδελφε καὶ λαλήσομεν περὶ τοῦ κορασίου τὴν νύκτα ταύτην καὶ μνηστευσόμεθά σοὶ αὐτήν καὶ ὅταν ἐπιστρέψωμεν ἐκ Ῥάγων λημψόμεθα αὐτὴν καὶ ἀπάξομεν αὐτὴν μεθ᾿ ἡμῶν εἰς τὸν οἶκόν σου |
| 13 now therefore hear me, and I will speak to her father; and when we return from Rhaga we will celebrate the marriage: for I know that Ragouēl cannot marry her to another according to the law of Moses, but he shall be guilty of death, because the right of inheritance doth rather appertain to you than to any other. | And he said, “It is right for you to take her. So listen to me, brother, and I shall speak to the father about the girl this night so that we may take her to be your bride. And, when we return from Rhaga, we shall celebrate her wedding feast. And I know that Ragouēl cannot keep her from you or promise her to another; he would be liable to death according to the decree of the book of Mōyses. And he knows that the inheritance is yours by right to take his daughter before any other man. So now listen to me, brother, and we shall speak this night concerning the girl and have her engaged to you. And, when we return from Rhaga, we shall take her and bring her back with us into your house.” |
| 14 τότε εἶπεν τὸ παιδάριον τῷ ἀγγέλῳ Ἀζαριά ἄδελφε, ἀκήκοα ἐγὼ τὸ κοράσιον δεδόσθαι ἑπτὰ ἀνδράσιν καὶ πάντας ἐν τῷ νυμφῶνι ἀπολωλότας. | 14 τότε ἀποκριθεὶς Τωβίας εἶπεν τῷ Ῥαφαὴλ Ἀζαριά ἄδελφε ἤκουσα ὅτι ἑπτὰ ἤδη ἐδόθη ἀνδράσιν καὶ ἀπέθανον ἐν τοῖς νυμφῶσιν αὐτῶν τὴν νύκτα ὁπότε εἰσεπορεύοντο πρὸς αὐτήν καὶ ἀπέθνῃσκον καὶ ἤκουσα λεγόντων αὐτῶν ὅτι δαιμόνιον ἀποκτέννει αὐτούς |
| 14 Then the young man answered the angel, I have heard, brother Azarias that this maid hath been given to seven men, who all died in the marriage chamber. | Then in reply Tōbias said to Raphaēl, “Brother Azarias, I heard that she already has been given to seven husbands, and they died in their bridal chamber. On the night when they went in toward her, they would die. And I heard people say that a demon kills them. |
| 15 καὶ νῦν ἐγὼ μόνος εἰμὶ τῷ πατρὶ καὶ φοβοῦμαι μὴ εἰσελθὼν ἀποθάνω καθὼς καὶ οἱ πρότεροι, ὅτι δαιμόνιον φιλεῖ αὐτήν, ὃ οὐκ ἀδικεῖ οὐδένα πλὴν τῶν προσαγόντων αὐτῇ. καὶ νῦν ἐγὼ φοβοῦμαι μὴ ἀποθάνω καὶ κατάξω τὴν ζωὴν τοῦ πατρός μου καὶ τῆς μητρός μου μετ᾿ ὀδύνης ἐπ᾿ ἐμοὶ εἰς τὸν τάφον αὐτῶν· καὶ υἱὸς ἕτερος οὐχ ὑπάρχει αὐτοῖς, ὃς θάψει αὐτούς. | 15 καὶ νῦν φοβοῦμαι ἐγώ ὅτι αὐτὴν οὐκ ἀδικεῖ ἀλλ᾿ ὃς ἄν θελήσῃ ἐγγίσαι αὐτῆς ἀποκτέννει αὐτόν μονογενής εἰμι τῷ πατρί μου μὴ ἀποθάνω καὶ κατάξω τὴν ζωὴν τοῦ πατρός μου καὶ τῆς μητρός μου μετ᾿ ὀδύνης ἐπ᾿ ἐμοὶ εἰς τὸν τάφον αὐτῶν καὶ υἱὸς ἕτερος οὐχ ὑπάρχει αὐτοῖς ἵνα θάψῃ αὐτούς |
| 15 And now I am the only son of my father, and I am afraid, lest if I go in unto her, I die, as the other before: for a wicked spirit loveth her, which hurteth no body, but those which come unto her; wherefore I also fear lest I die, and bring my father’s and my mother’s life because of me to the grave with sorrow: for they have no other son to bury them. | And now I am afraid—for it does not harm her, but anyone who desires to approach her it kills; I am my father’s only son—that I may die and bring my father’s and my mother’s life, because of me, to their grave with sorrow. And they have no other son, that he may bury them.” |
| 16 εἶπεν δὲ αὐτῷ ὁ ἄγγελος οὐ μέμνησαι τῶν λόγων, ὧν ἐνετείλατό σοὶ ὁ πατήρ σου ὑπὲρ τοῦ λαβεῖν σὲ γυναῖκα ἐκ τοῦ γένους σου; καὶ νῦν ἄκουσόν μου, ἄδελφε, διότι σοὶ ἔσται εἰς γυναῖκα, καὶ τοῦ δαιμονίου μηδένα λόγον ἔχε, ὅτι τὴν νύκτα ταύτην δοθήσεταί σοὶ αὕτη εἰς γυναῖκα. | 16 καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ οὐ μέμνησαι τὰς ἐντολὰς τοῦ πατρός σου ὅτι ἐνετείλατό σοὶ λαβεῖν γυναῖκα ἐκ τοῦ οἴκου τοῦ πατρός σου καὶ νῦν ἄκουσόν μου ἄδελφε καὶ μὴ λόγον ἔχε τοῦ δαιμονίου τούτου καὶ λαβέ καὶ γινώσκω ἐγὼ ὅτι τὴν νύκτα ταύτην δοθήσεταί σοὶ γυνή |
| 16 Then the angel said unto him, Dost you not remember the precepts which your father gave you, that you shouldest marry a wife of your own kindred? wherefore hear me, O my brother; for she shall be given you to wife; and make you no reckoning of the evil spirit; for this same night shall she be given you in marriage. | But he said to him, “Do you not remember your father’s commandments, that he commanded you to take a wife from your father’s house? So now listen to me, brother, and do not worry about this demon, and take her. And I know that this night a wife will be given to you. |
| 17 καὶ ἐὰν εἰσέλθῃς εἰς τὸν νυμφῶνα, λήμψῃ τέφραν θυμιαμάτων καὶ ἐπιθήσεις ἀπὸ τῆς καρδίας καὶ τοῦ ἥπατος τοῦ ἰχθύος καὶ καπνίσεις, καὶ ὀσφρανθήσεται τὸ δαιμόνιον καὶ φεύξεται καὶ οὐκ ἐπανελεύσεται τὸν αἰῶνα τοῦ αἰῶνος. | 17 καὶ ὅταν εἰσέλθῃς εἰς τὸν νυμφῶνα λαβὲ ἐκ τοῦ ἥπατος τοῦ ἰχθύος καὶ τὴν καρδίαν καὶ ἐπίθες ἐπὶ τὴν τέφραν τῶν θυμιαμάτων καὶ ἡ ὀσμὴ πορεύσεται καὶ ὀσφρανθήσεται τὸ δαιμόνιον καὶ φεύξεται καὶ οὐκέτι μὴ φανῇ περὶ αὐτὴν τὸν πάντα αἰῶνα |
| 17 And when you shalt come into the marriage chamber, you shalt take the ashes of perfume, and shalt lay upon them some of the heart and liver of the fish, and shalt make a smoke with it. And the demon shall smell it, and flee away, and never come again any more: | Now when you go into the bridal chamber, take some of the fish’s liver and heart, and put them on the embers of the incense, and the smell will go forth. Then the demon will smell it and flee and will never be seen around her any more. |
| 18 ὅταν δὲ προσπορεύῃ αὐτῇ, ἐγέρθητε ἀμφότεροι καὶ βοήσατε πρὸς τὸν ἐλεήμονα θεόν, καὶ σώσει ὑμᾶς καὶ ἐλεήσει· μὴ φοβοῦ, ὅτι σοὶ αὐτὴ ἡτοιμασμένη ἦν ἀπὸ τοῦ αἰῶνος, καὶ σὺ αὐτὴν σώσεις, καὶ πορεύσεται μετὰ σοῦ, καὶ ὑπολαμβάνω ὅτι σοὶ ἔσται ἐξ αὐτῆς παιδία. | 18 καὶ ὅταν μέλλῃς γίνεσθαι μετ᾿ αὐτῆς ἐξεγέρθητε πρῶτον ἀμφότεροι καὶ προσεύξασθε καὶ δεήθητε τοῦ κυρίου τοῦ οὐρανοῦ ἵνα ἔλεος γένηται καὶ σωτηρίᾳ ἐφ᾿ ὑμᾶς καὶ μὴ φοβοῦ σοὶ γάρ ἐστιν μεμερισμένη πρὸ τοῦ αἰῶνος καὶ σὺ αὐτὴν σώσεις καὶ μετὰ σοῦ πορεύσεται καὶ ὑπολαμβάνω ὅτι ἔσονταί σοὶ ἐξ αὐτῆς παιδία καὶ ἔσονταί σοὶ ὡς ἀδελφοί μὴ λόγον ἔχε |
| 18 But when you shalt come to her, rise up both of you, and pray to God which is merciful, who will have pity on you, and save you: fear not, for she is appointed unto you from the beginning; and you shalt preserve her, and she shall go with you. Moreover I suppose that she shall bear you children. | And when you are about to be with her, get up first, both of you, and pray, and beseech the Lord of heaven that mercy and safety may be upon you. So do not be afraid, for she was set apart for you from of old. And you will save her, and she will go with you. And I suppose that you will have children by her, and they will be as brothers to you. Do not worry!” |
| 19 καὶ ὡς ἤκουσεν Τωβίας ταῦτα, ἐφίλησεν αὐτήν, καὶ ἡ ψυχὴ αὐτοῦ ἐκολλήθη αὐτῇ σφόδρα. | 19 καὶ ὅτε ἤκουσεν Τωβίας τῶν λόγων Ῥαφαὴλ καὶ ὅτι ἔστιν αὐτῷ ἀδελφὴ ἐκ τοῦ σπέρματος τοῦ οἴκου τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ λίαν ἠγάπησεν αὐτήν καὶ ἡ καρδία αὐτοῦ ἐκολλήθη εἰς αὐτήν |
| 19 Now when Tōbias had heard these things, he loved her, and his heart was effectually joined to her. | Now when Tōbias heard the words of Raphaēl, and that she was his kinswoman of the lineage of his father’s house, he loved her very much, and his heart clung to her. |
