Healing a Paralytic
(Mt 9.1‑8; Lk 5.17‑26)

After entering again into Capernaum several days afterward, it was heard that he was at home. After entering again into Capernaum several days afterward, it was heard that he was at home.
And many were gathered together, so that there was no longer room, not even near the door; and he was speaking the word to them. And immediately many were gathered together, so that there was no longer room, not even near the door; and he was speaking the word to them.
And while being unable to go to him because of the crowd, they removed the roof where he was; and after breaking through, they lowered the pallet on which the paralytic was lying. And while being unable to go to him because of the crowd, they removed the roof where he was; and after breaking through, they lowered the pallet on which the paralytic was lying.
And after seeing their faith, Jesus said to the paralytic, “Child, your sins are forgiven.” And after seeing their faith, Jesus said to the paralytic, “Child, your sins are forgiven.”
2:7 τί οὗτος οὕτως λαλεῖ;
βλασφημεῖ· τίς δύναται ἀφιέναι ἁμαρτίας εἰ μὴ εἷς θεός;
7 τί οὗτος οὕτω λαλεῖ βλασφημίας;
τίς δύναται ἀφιέναι ἁμαρτίας, εἰ μὴ εἷς, θεός;
“Why does this man speak that way? He is blaspheming! Who is able to forgive sins except one: God alone?” “Why does this man speak that way? He is blaspheming! Who is able to forgive sins except one: God alone?”
2:8 καὶ εὐθὺς ἐπιγνοὺς Ἰησοῦς τῷ πνεύματι αὐτοῦ ὅτι οὕτως διαλογίζονται ἐν ἑαυτοῖς λέγει αὐτοῖς, τί ταῦτα διαλογίζεσθε ἐν ταῖς καρδίαις ὑμῶν; 8 καὶ εὐθέως ἐπιγνοὺς Ἰησοῦς τῷ πνεύματι αὐτοῦ, ὅτι οὕτως διαλογίζονται ἐν ἑαυτοῖς, εἶπεν αὐτοῖς, τί ταῦτα διαλογίζεσθε ἐν ταῖς καρδίαις ὑμῶν;
And immediately after noticing in his spirit that they were arguing thus among themselves, Jesus said to them, “Why are you arguing about these things in your hearts? And immediately after noticing in his spirit that they were arguing thus among themselves, Jesus said to them, “Why are you arguing about these things in your hearts?
2:9 τί ἐστιν εὐκοπώτερον, εἰπεῖν τῷ παραλυτικῷ, ἀφίενταί σου αἱ ἁμαρτίαι, εἰπεῖν, ἔγειρε καὶ ἆρον τὸν κράβαττόν σου καὶ περιπάτει; 9 τί ἐστιν εὐκοπώτερον, εἰπεῖν τῷ παραλυτικῷ, ἀφέωνταί σοι αἱ ἁμαρτίαι, εἰπεῖν, ἔγειραι, καὶ ἆρόν σου τὸν κράββατον, καὶ περιπάτει;
Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven’; or to say, ‘Get up, and pick up your pallet and walk’? Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven’; or to say, ‘Get up, and pick up your pallet and walk’?
But in order that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins” – he said to the paralytic, But in order that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins” (he said to the paralytic,)
“I say to you, get up, pick up your pallet and go to your home.” “I say to you, get yourself up, pick up your pallet and go to your home.”
And he got up and immediately picked up the pallet and went out in front of all, so that they were all amazed and were glorifying God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this.” And he got up and immediately picked up the pallet and went out in the presence of all, so that they were all amazed and were glorifying God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this.”

Calling of Levi
(Mt 9.9‑13; Lk 5.27‑32)

And he went out again by the seashore; and all the crowd kept coming to him, and he kept teaching them. And he went out again by the seashore; and all the crowd kept coming to him, and he kept teaching them.
And while passing by, he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting in the tax booth, and he said to him, “Follow me!” And after getting up, he followed him. And while passing by, he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting in the tax booth, and he said to him, “Follow me!” And after getting up, he followed him.
And it happened that he was reclining at the table in his house, and many tax collectors and sinners were sitting with Jesus and his disciples; for there were many of them, and they were following him. And it happened that he was reclining at the table in his house, and many tax collectors and sinners were sitting with Jesus and his disciples; for there were many of them, and they were following him.
2:16 καὶ οἱ γραμματεῖς τῶν Φαρισαίων ἰδόντες ὅτι ἐσθίει μετὰ τῶν ἁμαρτωλῶν καὶ τελωνῶν ἔλεγον τοῖς μαθηταῖς αὐτοῦ, ὅτι μετὰ τῶν τελωνῶν καὶ ἁμαρτωλῶν ἐσθίει; 16 καὶ οἱ γραμματεῖς καὶ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι, ἰδόντες αὐτὸν ἐσθίοντα μετὰ τῶν τελωνῶν καὶ ἁμαρτωλῶν, ἔλεγον τοῖς μαθηταῖς αὐτοῦ, τί ὅτι μετὰ τῶν τελωνῶν καὶ ἁμαρτωλῶν ἐσθίει καὶ πίνει;
After seeing that he was eating with the sinners and tax collectors, the scribes of the Pharisees began saying to his disciples, “Why is he eating with tax collectors and sinners?” After seeing that he was eating with the tax collectors and sinners, the scribes of the Pharisees began saying to his disciples, “Why is he eating and drinking with tax collectors and sinners?”
And after hearing, Jesus said to them, “The healthy don’t have a need for a physician, but the ones who have sickness; I didn’t come to call the righteous, but sinners.” And after hearing, Jesus said to them, “The healthy don’t have a need for a physician, but the ones who have sickness; I didn’t come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”

Question about Fasting
(Mt 9.14‑17; Lk 5.33‑39)

καὶ ἔρχονται καὶ λέγουσιν αὐτῷ, διὰ τί οἱ μαθηταὶ Ἰωάννου καὶ οἱ μαθηταὶ τῶν Φαρισαίων νηστεύουσιν, οἱ δὲ σοί μαθηταὶ οὐ νηστεύουσιν;
18 καὶ ἦσαν οἱ μαθηταὶ Ἰωάννου καὶ οἱ τῶν Φαρισαίων νηστεύοντες· καὶ ἔρχονται καὶ λέγουσιν αὐτῷ, διατί οἱ μαθηταὶ Ἰωάννου καὶ οἱ τῶν Φαρισαίων νηστεύουσιν, οἱ δὲ σοί μαθηταὶ οὐ νηστεύουσιν;
And the disciples of Jōhn and the Pharisees were fasting; and they came and said to him, “Why do the disciples of Jōhn and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples don’t fast?” And the disciples of Jōhn and the Pharisees were fasting; and they came and said to him, “Why do the disciples of Jōhn and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples don’t fast?”
2:19 καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ἰησοῦς, μὴ δύνανται οἱ υἱοὶ τοῦ νυμφῶνος ἐν νυμφίος μετ᾿ αὐτῶν ἐστιν νηστεύειν;
19 καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ἰησοῦς, μὴ δύνανται οἱ υἱοὶ τοῦ νυμφῶνος, ἐν νυμφίος μετ᾿ αὐτῶν ἐστι, νηστεύειν;
And Jesus said to them, “The friends of the bridegroom cannot fast while the bridegroom is with them, can they? So long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast. And Jesus said to them, “The friends of the bridegroom cannot fast while the bridegroom is with them, can they? So long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast.
But the days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast in that day. But the days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast in those days.
No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; otherwise the filled patch pulls away from it, the new from the old, and becomes a worse tear. No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; otherwise the filled patch pulls away from it, the new from the old, and becomes a worse tear.
No one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the wine will burst the wineskins, and the wine is lost and the skins as well; but one puts new wine into new wineskins.” No one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the new wine will burst the wineskins, and the wine pours out and the wineskins are ruined; but new wine must be put into new wineskins.”

Plucking Grain on the Sabbath
(Mt 12.1‑8; Lk 6.1‑5)

And it happened that he was passing through the grainfields on the Sabbath, and his disciples began to make their way along while picking the heads of grain. And it happened that he was passing through the grainfields on the Sabbath, and his disciples began to make their way along while picking the heads of grain.
2:24 καὶ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι ἔλεγον αὐτῷ, ἴδε τί ποιοῦσιν τοῖς σάββασιν οὐκ ἔξεστιν; 24 καὶ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι ἔλεγον αὐτῷ, ἴδε, τί ποιοῦσιν ἐν τοῖς σάββασιν, οὐκ ἔξεστι;
The Pharisees began saying to him, “Look! why are they doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath?” The Pharisees began saying to him, “Look! why are they doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath?”
2:25 καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς, οὐδέποτε ἀνέγνωτε τί ἐποίησεν Δαυὶδ ὅτε χρείαν ἔσχεν καὶ ἐπείνασεν αὐτὸς καὶ οἱ μετ᾿ αὐτοῦ, 25 καὶ αὐτὸς ἔλεγεν αὐτοῖς, οὐδέποτε ἀνέγνωτε τί ἐποίησε Δαβίδ, ὅτε χρείαν ἔσχε καὶ ἐπείνασεν αὐτὸς καὶ οἱ μετ᾿ αὐτοῦ;
And he said to them, “Have you never read what David did when he was in need and he and the ones with him became hungry; And he said to them, “Have you never read what David did when he was in need and he and the ones with him became hungry;
2:26 πῶς εἰσῆλθεν εἰς τὸν οἶκον τοῦ θεοῦ ἐπὶ Ἀβιαθὰρ ἀρχιερέως καὶ τοὺς ἄρτους τῆς προθέσεως ἔφαγεν, οὓς οὐκ ἔξεστιν φαγεῖν εἰ μὴ τοὺς ἱερεῖς, καὶ ἔδωκεν καὶ τοῖς σὺν αὐτῷ οὖσιν; 26 πῶς εἰσῆλθεν εἰς τὸν οἶκον τοῦ θεοῦ ἐπὶ Ἀβιαθὰρ τοῦ ἀρχιερέως, καὶ τοὺς ἄρτους τῆς προθέσεως ἔφαγεν, οὓς οὐκ ἔξεστι φαγεῖν εἰ μὴ τοῖς ἱερεῦσι, καὶ ἔδωκε καὶ τοῖς σὺν αὐτῷ οὖσι;
how he entered the house of God in the time of high priest Abiathar, and ate the consecrated bread, which is not lawful to eat except the priests, and he also gave it to those who were with him?”[1] how he entered the house of God in the time of high priest Abiathar, and ate the consecrated bread, which is not lawful to eat except the priests, and he also gave it to those who were with him?”[1]
