topJudges ch 11

Chapter 11

AlexandrinusVaticanus

1 Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty man of valour, and he was the son of a protitute; and Gilead fathered Jephthah.

1 And Jephthae the Galaadite was powerful in strength, and he was a son of a woman who was a prostitute, and she gave birth to Jephthae by Galaad. 1 And Jephthae the Galaadite was exalted in power, and he was the son of a woman who was a prostitute, who gave birth to Jephthae by Galaad.

2 And Gilead’s wife gave birth to sons for him; and his wife’s sons grew up, and they drove Jephthah out, and said to him, “You shall not inherit in our father’s house; for you are the son of another woman.”

2 And Galaad’s wife gave birth to sons by him, and his wife’s sons came to maturity and drove Iephthae away and said to him, “You shall not inherit anything in our father’s house, because you are the son of woman who is a concubine.” 2 And Galaad’s wife gave birth to sons by him, and his wife’s sons came to maturity and drove Iephthae away and said to him, “You shall not inherit anything in our father’s house, because you are the son of woman who is a concubine.”

3 Then Jephthah fled from his brothers, and dwelt in the land of Tōb; and foolish men gathered to Jephthah, and went out with him.

3 And Jephthae fled from before his brothers and lived in the land of Tōb. And petty men were coming together to Jephthae and would go out together with him. 3 And Jephthae fled from before his brothers and dwelt in the land of Tōb. And worthless men gathered around Jephthae and set out with him.

4 And it happened in process of time, that the sons of Ammon made war against Israēl.

4 And it came to be, after days that the sons of Ammōn made war with Israēl. 4 And it came to be, when the sons of Ammon prepared to fight with Israēl,

5 And it was so, that when the sons of Ammon made war against Israēl, the elders of Gilead went to fetch Jephthah out of the land of Tōb.

5 And it came to be, when the sons of Ammōn were making war with Israēl, that the elders of Galaad went to take along Jephthae in the land of Tōb. 5 that the elders of Galaad went to take Jephthae from the land of Tōb.

6 And they said to Jephthah, “Come, and be our captain, that we may fight with the sons of Ammon.”

6 And they said to Jephthae, “Come, and you will be for a leader for us, and let us fight against the sons of Ammōn.” 6 And they said to Jephthae, “Come, and you will be for a ruler for us, and let us deploy troops against the sons of Ammōn.”

7 And Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, “Didn’t you hate me, and expel me out of my father’s house? And why are you coming to me now when you are in distress?”

7 καὶ εἶπεν Ἰεφθάε τοῖς πρεσβυτέροις Γαλαὰδ Οὐχ ὑμεῖς ἐμισήσατέ με καὶ ἐξεβάλετέ με ἐκ τοῦ οἴκου τοῦ πατρός μου καὶ ἐξαπεστείλατέ με ἀφ’ ὑμῶν;
καὶ τί ὅτι ἤλθατε πρός με, ἡνίκα ἐθλίβητε;
7 καὶ εἶπεν Ἰεφθάε τοῖς πρεσβυτέροις Γαλαάδ· οὐχὶ ὑμεῖς ἐμισήσατέ με καὶ ἐξεβάλετέ με ἐκ τοῦ οἴκου τοῦ πατρός μου καὶ ἐξαπεστείλατέ με ἀφ’ ὑμῶν;
καὶ διὰ τί ἤλθατε πρός με νῦν, ἡνίκα χρῄζετε;
7 And Jephthae said to the elders of Galaad, “Was it not you who hated me and drove me out of my father’s house and sent me away from you? And why is it that you came to me when you were in trouble?” 7 And Jephthae said to the elders of Galaad, “Was it not you that hated me and drove me out of my father’s house and sent me away from you? And for what reason did you come to me now when you are in need?”

8 And the elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, “Therefore we turn again to you now, so that you may go with us, and fight against the sons of Ammon, and be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.”

8 And the elders of Galaad said to Jephthae, “Not so! We have come to you now, and you will go with us, and we will fight against the sons of Ammōn, and you will be for a head for us, for all the inhabitants of Galaad.” 8 And the elders of Galaad said to Jephthae, “It is for this reason that we have now turned to you, and you will go with us and deploy troops against the sons of Ammōn, and you will be for a ruler for us, for all the inhabitants of Galaad.”

9 And Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, “If you bring me home again to fight against the sons of Ammon, and Yahweh delivers them before me, shall I be your head?”

9 And Jephthae said to the elders of Galaad, “If you are returning me to fight against the sons of Ammōn, then let the Lord give them over before me. I will be for a head for you.” 9 And Jephthae said to the elders of Galaad, “If you are returning me to deploy troops against the sons of Ammōn, then let the Lord give them over before me, and I will be for a ruler for you.”

10 And the elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, “May Yahweh be the witness between us, if we don’t s\do according to your words.”

10 And the elders of Galaad said to Jephthae, “The Lord will be the one who hears between us, if we don’t do so, according to your word.” 10 And the elders of Galaad said to Jephthae, “Let the Lord be hearing between us, if we don’t do so, according to your word.”

11 Then Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and captain over them; and Jephthah uttered all his words before Yahweh in Mizpeh.

11 And Jephthae went with the elders of Galaad, and they appointed him over them for a head, for a leader, and Jephthae spoke all his words before the Lord at Massēfa. 11 And Jephthae went with the elders of Galaad, and the people appointed him over them for a head and for a leader, and Jephthae spoke all his words before the Lord at Massēfa.

12 And Jephthah sent messengers to the king of the sons of Ammon, saying, “What have you to do with me, that you are coming against me to fight in my land?”

12 Καὶ ἀπέστειλεν Ἰεφθάε ἀγγέλους πρὸς βασιλέα υἱῶν Ἀμμὼν λέγων Τί ἐμοὶ καὶ σοί, ὅτι ἥκεις πρός με σὺ πολεμῆσαί με ἐν τῇ γῇ μου; 12 Καὶ ἀπέστειλεν Ἰεφθάε ἀγγέλους πρὸς βασιλέα υἱῶν Ἀμμὼν λέγων· τί ἐμοὶ καὶ σοί, ὅτι ἦλθες πρός με τοῦ παρατάξασθαι ἐν τῇ γῇ μου;
12 And Jephthae sent messengers to the king of the sons of Ammōn, saying, “What is there between you and me that you have come against me to fight me in my land?” 12 And Jephthae sent messengers to the king of the sons of Ammōn, saying, “What is there between you and me that you came against me to deploy troops in my land?”

13 And the king of the sons of Ammon answered to the messengers of Jephthah, “Because Israēl took away my land, when they came up out of Egypt, from Arnon even to Jabbok, and to Jordan; now therefore restore those lands again peaceably.”

13 And the king of the sons of Ammōn said to the messengers of Jephthae, “Because Israēl took away my land in his ascent up out of Aigypt, from Arnōn up to Jabok and as far as the Jordan, and now return them in peace.” 13 And the king of the sons of Ammōn said to the messengers of Jephthae, “Because Israēl took away my land when he came up out of Aigypt, from Arnōn and up to Jabok and as far as the Jordan, and now return them in peace, and I will go.”

14 And Jephthah sent messengers again to the king of the sons of Ammon.

14 And the messengers returned to Jephthae, and Jephthae sent messengers to the king of the sons of Ammōn, 14 And Jephthae still continued and sent messengers to the king of the sons of Ammōn

15 And said to him, “Thus says Jephthah, ‘Israēl didn’t take away the land of Moab, nor the land of the sons of Ammon.

15 saying. “This is what Jephthae says; Israēl didn’t take away the land of Mōab or the land of the sons of Ammōn 15 and said to him. “Thus says Jephthae; Israēl didn’t take away the land of Mōab or the land of the sons of Ammōn,

16 But when Israēl came up from Egypt, and walked through the wilderness to the Red Sea, and came to Kadesh;

16 in their ascent up out of Aigypt; rather, Israēl went in the wilderness as far as the Red Sea and came as far as Kadēs. 16 for when they came up out of Aigypt, Israēl went in the wilderness to the Sea of Siph and came to Kadēs.

17 then Israēl sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, “Let me, please, pass through your land”; but the king of Edom would not listen to it. And in like manner they sent to the king of Moab; but he would not consent; and Israēl remained in Kadesh.

17 And Israēl sent out messengers to the king of Edōm, saying, ‘I will pass through your land,’ and the king of Edōm didn’t listen. And indeed he sent to the king of Mōab, but he didn’t consent. And Israēl resided at Kadēs. 17 And Israēl sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, ‘I will indeed pass through in your land.’ And the king of Edōm didn’t listen. And he sent to the king of Mōab, and he didn’t consent. And Israēl resided at Kadēs.

18 Then they went along through the wilderness, and surrounded the land of Edom, and the land of Moab, and came by the east side of the land of Moab, and camped on the other side of Arnon, but didn’t come within the border of Moab; for Arnon was the border of Moab.

18 And he went through in the wilderness and encirled the land of Edōm and the land of Mōab and arrived at the rising of the sun of the land of Mōab, and they camped on the other side of Arnōn. And they didn’t enter the border of Mōab, because Arnōn was the border of Mōab. 18 And he proceeded in the wilderness and encirled the land of Edōm and the land of Mōab, and he came from the rising of the sun to the land of Mōab, and they camped on the other side of Arnōn. And he didn’t enter the borders of Mōab, because Arnōn was the border of Mōab.

19 And Israēl sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, the king of Heshbon; and Israēl said to him, “Let us pass, please, through your land into my place.”

19 And Israēl sent messengers to Sēōn, king of Esebōn, the Amorrite, and Israēl said to him, ‘I will pass through your land as far as my place.’ 19 And Israēl sent messengers to Sēōn, king of the Amorrite, king of Esebōn, and Israēl said to him, ‘Please let us pass through in your land as far as our place.’

20 But Sihon didn’t trust Israēl to pass through his coast; but Sihon gathered all his people together, and camped in Jahaz, and fought against Israēl.

20 And Sēōn didn’t want Israēl to cross his borders, and Sēōn gathered all his people together and encamped at Jassa and fought with Israēl. 20 And Sēōn didn’t trust Israēl to cross his border, and Sēōn gathered his entire people together, and they encamped at Jasa and deployed troops against Israēl.

21 And Yahweh Elohim of Israēl delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israēl, and they smote them; so Israēl possessed all the land of the Amorites, the inhabitants of that country.

21 And the Lord, the God of Israēl, gave Sēōn and all his people in the hand of Israēl, and he struck them, and Israēl inherited all the land of the Amorrite who inhabited the land. 21 And the Lord, the God of Israēl, gave Sēōn and all his people in the hand of Israēl, and he struck him, and Israēl inherited the entire land of the Amorrite who inhabited that land,

22 And they possessed all the coasts of the Amorites, from Arnon even to Jabbok, and from the wilderness even to Jordan.

22 And he inherited all the border of the Amorrite from Arnōn and as far as the Jabok and from the wilderness and as far as the Jordan. 22 from Arnōn and as far as the Jabok and from the wilderness as far as the Jordan.

23 So now Yahweh Elohim of Israēl has dispossessed the Amorites from before his people Israēl, and should you possess it?

23 καὶ νῦν κύριος θεὸς Ἰσραὴλ ἐξῆρεν τὸν Ἀμορραῖον ἐκ προσώπου τοῦ λαοῦ αὐτοῦ Ἰσραήλ, καὶ σὺ κληρονομήσεις αὐτὸν ἐπὶ σου; 23 καὶ νῦν κύριος θεὸς Ἰσραὴλ ἐξῆρεν τὸν Ἀμορραῖον ἀπὸ προσώπου λαοῦ αὐτοῦ Ἰσραήλ, καὶ σὺ κληρονομήσεις αὐτόν;
23 And now the Lord, the God of Israēl, has removed the Amorrite out of the presence of his people Israēl. And you shall inherit them for yourself? 23 And now the Lord, the God of Israēl, has removed the Amorrite from the presence of his people Israēl. And you shall inherit them?

24 Don’t you possess what Chemosh your god gives you to possess? So whatever Yahweh our Elohim shall drive out from before us, that we will possess.

24 οὐχὶ ὅσα κατεκληρονόμησέν σοί Χαμὼς θεός σου, αὐτὰ κληρονομήσεις;
24 οὐχὶ ἐὰν κληρονομήσει σὲ Χαμὼς θεός σου, αὐτὰ κληρονομήσεις καὶ τοὺς πάντας, οὓς ἐξῆρεν κύριος θεὸς ἡμῶν, ἀπὸ προσώπου ἡμῶν αὐτοὺς κληρονομήσομεν;
24 Should it not be that whatever your god Chamōs has allocated to you as an inheritance, that you will inherit? And everything that our Lord God has allocated as an inheritance from before us, that we will inherit. 24 Should it not be that whatever your god Chamōs will let you inherit, that you will inherit? And all those that our Lord God has removed from before us, them we will inherit.

25 And now are you any better than Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab? Did he ever quarrel against Israēl, or did he ever fight against them,

25 καὶ νῦν μὴ κρείσσων εἶ σὺ τοῦ Βαλὰκ υἱοῦ Σεπφὼρ βασιλέως Μωάβ;
μὴ μάχῃ ἐμαχέσατο μετὰ Ἰσραὴλ πολεμῶν ἐπολέμησεν αὐτοῖς;
25 καὶ νῦν μὴ ἐν ἀγαθῷ ἀγαθώτερος σὺ ὑπὲρ Βαλὰκ υἱὸν Σεπφὼρ βασιλέα Μωάβ;
μὴ μαχόμενος ἐμαχέσατο μετὰ Ἰσραὴλ πολεμῶν ἐπολέμησεν αὐτόν;
25 And now, are you any better than Balak son of Sepphōr, king of Mōab? Did he fight in a battle with Israēl, or going to war, did he go to war with them? 25 And now, aren’t you in any good thing better, beyond Balak son of Sepphōr, king of Mōab? Didn’t he while fighting, fight with Israēl, or while going to war go to war with him?

26 while Israēl dwelt in Heshbon and her towns, and in Aroer and her towns, and in all the cities that be along by the coasts of Arnon for 300 years? Why then did you not recover them within that time?

26 ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ Ἰσραὴλ ἐν Ἐσεβὼν καὶ ἐν ταῖς θυγατράσιν αὐτῆς καὶ ἐν Ἰαζὴρ καὶ ἐν ταῖς θυγατράσιν αὐτῆς καὶ ἐν πάσαις ταῖς πόλεσιν ταῖς παρὰ τὸν Ἰορδάνην τριακόσια ἔτη τί ὅτι οὐκ ἐρρύσαντο αὐτοὺς ἐν τῷ καιρῷ ἐκείνῳ; 26 ἐν τῷ οἰκῆσαι ἐν Ἐσεβὼν καὶ ἐν τοῖς ὁρίοις αὐτῆς καὶ ἐν γῇ Ἀροὴρ καὶ ἐν τοῖς ὁρίοις αὐτῆς καὶ ἐν πάσαις ταῖς πόλεσιν ταῖς παρὰ τὸν Ἰορδάνην τριακόσια ἔτη, καὶ διὰ τί οὐκ ἐρρύσω αὐτοὺς ἐν τῷ καιρῷ ἐκείνῳ;
26 In the house of Israēl in Esebōn and in its daughters and in Jazer and in its daughters and in all the cities that are along the Jordan, for 300 years, why is it they didn’t recover them within that time? 26 while he dwelt in Esebōn and in its borders and in the land of Aroēr and in its borders and in all the cities that are along the Jordan, for 300 years, and why did you not recover them within that time?

27 Therefore I haven’t sinned against you, but you do me wrong to war against me. May Yahweh the Judge be judge this day between the sons of Israēl and the sons of Ammon.’ ”

27 And I have not sinned against you, and you are the one who does evil against me, to make war against me. May the Lord, who is judging, judge today between the sons of Israēl and between the sons of Ammōn.” 27 And now it is I. I have not sinned against you, and you are the one who does evil against me, to deploy troops against me. May the Lord judge, judging today between the sons of Israēl and between the sons of Ammōn.”

28 However the king of the sons of Ammon didn’t listen to the words of Jephthah which he sent him.

28 And the king of the sons of Ammōn didn’t pay heed, and he didn’t pay heed to the words of Jephthae that he sent him. 28 And the king of the sons of Ammōn didn’t listen to the words of Jephthae that he sent him.

29 Then the Spirit of Yahweh came upon Jephthah, and he passed over Gilead, and Manasseh, and passed over Mizpeh of Gilead, and from Mizpeh of Gilead he passed over to the sons of Ammon.

29 And a spirit of the Lord came on Jephthae, and he passed through the land of Galaad and Manassēs. And he passed through the lookout point of Galaad, and from the lookout point of Galaad to the other side of the sons of Ammōn. 29 And a spirit of the Lord came on Jephthae, and he passed by Galaad and Manassēs. And he passed by the lookout point of Galaad to the other side of the sons of Ammōn.

30 And Jephthah vowed a vow to Yahweh, and said, “If you shall without fail deliver the sons of Ammon into my hands,

30 And Jephthae vowed a vow to the Lord and said, “If with a giving over, you will give over to me the sons of Ammōn in my hand, 30 And Jephthae vowed a vow to the Lord and said, “If giving, you will give the sons of Ammōn in my hand,

31 then it shall be, that whatever comes forth of the doors of my house to meet me when I return in peace from the sons of Ammon, shall surely be Yahweh's, and I will offer it up for a burnt offering.”

31 it shall also be that whoever comes out of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the sons of Ammōn, shall also be the Lord’s, and I will offer him up as a whole burnt offering.” 31 it shall also be that he who comes out, whoever comes from the door of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the sons of Ammōn, shall also be the Lord’s; I will offer him up as a whole burnt offering.”

32 So Jephthah passed over to the sons of Ammon to fight against them; and Yahweh delivered them into his hands.

32 And Jephthae crossed over to the sons of Ammōn to fight against them, and the Lord gave them up in his hand. 32 And Jephthae went to the sons of Ammōn to deploy troops against them, and the Lord gave them up in his hand.

33 And he smote them from Aroer, even until you come to Minnith, even twenty cities, and to the plain of the vineyards, with a very great slaughter. Thus the sons of Ammon were subdued before the sons of Israēl.

33 And he struck them from Aroēr and until one comes to Semoith, twenty cities, as far as Abel-of-the-vineyards, a very great blow. And the sons of Ammōn were humbled from before the sons of Israēl. 33 And he struck them from Aroēr until coming as far as Arnōn, twenty cities in number, and up to Ebelcharmin, a very great blow. And the sons of Ammōn were put to shame from before the sons of Israēl.

34 And Jephthah came to Mizpeh to his house, and, suddenly, his daughter came out to meet him with timbrels and with dances; and she was his only child; besides her, he had neither son nor daughter.

34 And Jephthae came to Massēfa, to his home, and look! his daughter was coming out to meet him with timbrels and with dancing. And she was his beloved only child, and he had no son or daughter except her. 34 And Jephthae came to Massēfa, to his home, and look! his daughter was coming out to meet him with timbrels and with dancing. And she was an only child; he had no other son or daughter.

35 And it happened, when he saw her, that he tore his clothes, and said, “Alas, my daughter! you have brought me very low, and you are one of those who trouble me; for I have opened my mouth to Yahweh, and I cannot go back.”

35 And it came to be, when he saw her that he tore his clothes and said, “Ah me, my daughter! You are in my way for becoming a hindrance in my eyes. But I opened my mouth about you to the Lord, and I cannot turn away.” 35 And it came to be, as he saw her that he tore his clothes and said, “Oh oh, my daughter! With confusion you have confused me, and it is you who were in my confusion. And it is I. Against you I opened my mouth to the Lord, and I cannot turn back.”

36 And she said to him, “My father, if you have opened your mouth to Yahweh, do to me according to what has proceeded out of your mouth; since Yahweh has taken vengeance for you of your enemies, even of the sons of Ammon.”

36 καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτόν Πάτερ μου, εἰ ἐν ἐμοὶ ἤνοιξας τὸ στόμα σου πρὸς κύριον, ποίει μοι ὃν τρόπον ἐξῆλθεν ἐκ τοῦ στόματός σου ἀνθ’ ὧν ἐποίησέν σοί κύριος ἐκδικήσεις ἐκ τῶν ἐχθρῶν σου ἐκ τῶν υἱῶν Ἀμμών. 36 δὲ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτόν· πάτερ, ἤνοιξας τὸ στόμα σου πρὸς κύριον;
36 And she said to him, “My father, if against me you have opened your mouth to the Lord, do to me as it came out of your mouth, now that the Lord has exacted vengeance for you from your enemies, from the sons of Ammōn.” 36 But she said to him, “Father, have you opened your mouth to the Lord? Do to me as it came out of your mouth when the Lord exacted vengeance for you from your enemies, from the sons of Ammōn.”

37 And she said to her father, “Let this thing be done for me; let me alone two months, that I may go up and down on the mountains, and bewail my virginity, I and my friends.”

37 And she said to her father, “And do this thing for me. Allow me two months, and I will go and descend on the mountains and bewail my virginity, both I and my companions.” 37 And she it was who said to her father, “Please let my father do this matter. Allow me two months, and I will go and descend on the mountains and bewail my virginity. It is me and my companions.”

38 And he said, “Go.” And he sent her away for two months; and she went with her companions, and bewailed her virginity on the mountains.

38 And he said, “Go,” and sent her away for two months. And she went, she and her companions, and she bewailed her virginity on the mountains. 38 And he said, “Go,” and sent her away for two months. And she went, she and her companions, and she bewailed her virginity on the mountains.

39 And it happened at the end of two months, that she returned to her father, who did with her according to his vow which he had vowed; and she knew no man. And it was a custom in Israēl,

39 And it came to be, after the end of two months that she returned to her father, and Jephthae fulfilled his vow that he had vowed. And she had never known a man. And it became for an ordinance in Israēl. 39 And it came to be, at the end of the two months that she returned to her father, and he carried out against her his vow that he had vowed. And she had never known a man. And it became for an ordinance in Israēl.

40 that the daughters of Israēl went yearly to lament the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite four days in a year.

40 from days to days the daughters of Israēl would go together to lament the daughter of Jephthae the Galaadite, four days in the year. 40 from days to days, daughters of Israēl would go to lament the daughter of Jephthae of Galaad, for four days in the year.
