Repent or Perish

Now about that time there were some present who reported to him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices. Now about that time there were some present who reported to him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices.
13:2 καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς, δοκεῖτε ὅτι οἱ Γαλιλαῖοι οὗτοι ἁμαρτωλοὶ παρὰ πάντας τοὺς Γαλιλαίους ἐγένοντο, ὅτι ταῦτα πεπόνθασιν; 2 καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς, δοκεῖτε, ὅτι οἱ Γαλιλαῖοι οὗτοι ἁμαρτωλοὶ παρὰ πάντας τοὺς Γαλιλαίους ἐγένοντο, ὅτι τοιαῦτα πεπόνθασιν;
And in response to them, he said, “Do you suppose that these Galileans were greater sinners than all other Galileans because they suffered these things? And in response to them, Jesus said, “Do you suppose that these Galileans were greater sinners than all other Galileans because they suffered these things?
I tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish. I tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.
I tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.” I tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.”

Parable of the Fig Tree

And he began telling this parable: “A man had a fig tree which had been planted in his vineyard; and he came seeking fruit on it and didn’t find any. And he began telling this parable: “A man had a fig tree which had been planted in his vineyard; and he came seeking fruit on it and didn’t find any.
13:7 εἶπεν δὲ πρὸς τὸν ἀμπελουργόν, ἰδοὺ τρία ἔτη ἀφ᾿ οὗ ἔρχομαι ζητῶν καρπὸν ἐν τῇ συκῇ ταύτῃ καὶ οὐχ εὑρίσκω· ἔκκοψον [οὖν] αὐτήν, ἱνατί καὶ τὴν γῆν καταργεῖ; 7 εἶπε δὲ πρὸς τὸν ἀμπελουργόν, ἰδού, τρία ἔτη ἔρχομαι ζητῶν καρπὸν ἐν τῇ συκῇ ταύτῃ, καὶ οὐχ εὑρίσκω· ἔκκοψον αὐτήν· ἱνατί καὶ τὴν γῆν καταργεῖ;
And he said to the vine-pruner, ‘Look! for three years I have come seeking fruit on this fig tree I haven’t found any. Cut it down! Why does it even use up the ground?’ And he said to the vine-pruner, ‘Look! for three years I have come seeking fruit on this fig tree I haven’t found any. Cut it down! Why does it even use up the ground?’
And in response to him, he said, ‘Let it alone, sir, for this year too, until I dig around it and put in fertilizer; And in response to him, he said, ‘Let it alone, sir, for this year too, until I dig around it and put in fertilizer;
and if it produces fruit for the future, fine; but if not, cut it down.’” and if it produces fruit fine; but if not, in the future, cut it down.’”

Healing Crippled Woman

And he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath. And he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath.
And next, there was a woman who for eighteen years had had a spirit-caused sickness; and she was bent double, and was not able to straighten up at all. And next, there was a woman who for eighteen years had had a spirit-caused sickness; and she was bent double, and was not able to straighten up at all.
After seeing her, Jesus called her forward and said to her, “Woman, you are freed from your sickness.” After seeing her, Jesus called her forward and said to her, “Woman, you are freed from your sickness.”
And he put his hands on her; and immediately she was straightened again and began glorifying God. And he put his hands on her; and immediately she was straightened again and began glorifying God.
But in response, the synagogue official, being indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, began saying to the crowd, “There are six days in which work should be done; so come during them and get healed, and not on the Sabbath day.” But in response, the synagogue official, being indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, began saying to the crowd, “There are six days in which work should be done; so come during them and get healed, and not on the Sabbath day.”
13:15 ἀπεκρίθη δὲ αὐτῷ κύριος καὶ εἶπεν, ὑποκριταί, ἕκαστος ὑμῶν τῷ σαββάτῳ οὐ λύει τὸν βοῦν αὐτοῦ τὸν ὄνον ἀπὸ τῆς φάτνης καὶ ἀπαγαγὼν ποτίζει; 15 ἀπεκρίθη οὖν αὐτῷ κύριος, καὶ εἶπεν, ὑποκριτά, ἕκαστος ὑμῶν τῷ σαββάτῳ οὐ λύει τὸν βοῦν αὐτοῦ τὸν ὄνον ἀπὸ τῆς φάτνης, καὶ ἀπαγαγὼν ποτίζει;
But the Lord answered him and said, “Hypocrites, doesn’t each of you on the Sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from the stall and lead him away to water him? But the Lord answered him and said, “Hypocrites, doesn’t each of you on the Sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from the stall and lead him away to water him?
13:16 ταύτην δὲ θυγατέρα Ἀβραὰμ οὖσαν, ἣν ἔδησεν Σατανᾶς ἰδοὺ δέκα καὶ ὀκτὼ ἔτη, οὐκ ἔδει λυθῆναι ἀπὸ τοῦ δεσμοῦ τούτου τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τοῦ σαββάτου; 16 ταύτην δέ, θυγατέρα Ἀβραὰμ οὖσαν, ἣν ἔδησεν Σατανᾶς, ἰδού, δέκα καὶ ὀκτὼ ἔτη, οὐκ ἔδει λυθῆναι ἀπὸ τοῦ δεσμοῦ τούτου τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τοῦ σαββάτου;
And this woman is a daughter of Abraham whom Satan has bound for eighteen long years. Should she not have been untied from this bond on the Sabbath day?” And this woman is a daughter of Abraham whom Satan has bound for eighteen long years. Should she not have been untied from this bond on the Sabbath day?”
When he said this, all the ones who opposed him were being humiliated; and the entire crowd was rejoicing over all the glorious things being done by him. When he said this, all the ones who opposed him were being humiliated; and the entire crowd was rejoicing over all the glorious things being done by him.

(Matt 13:31-33: Mark 4:30-32)

13:18 Ἔλεγεν οὖν, τίνι ὁμοία ἐστὶν βασιλεία τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ τίνι ὁμοιώσω αὐτήν; 18 Ἔλεγε δέ, τίνι ὁμοία ἐστὶν βασιλεία τοῦ θεοῦ;
καὶ τίνι ὁμοιώσω αὐτήν;
So he was saying, “What is the kingdom of God like, and to what shall I compare it? So he was saying, “What is the kingdom of God like, and to what shall I compare it?
13:20 καὶ πάλιν εἶπεν, τίνι ὁμοιώσω τὴν βασιλείαν τοῦ θεοῦ; 20 καὶ πάλιν εἶπε, τίνι ὁμοιώσω τὴν βασιλείαν τοῦ θεοῦ;
And again he said, “To what shall I compare the kingdom of God? And again he said, “To what shall I compare the kingdom of God?
It is like leaven, which after taking it, a woman hid it in three sata[1] of flour until it was all leavened.” It is like leaven, which after taking it, a woman hid it in three sata[1] of flour until it was all leavened.”

The Narrow Door
(Matt 7:13-14; 21-23)

And he was passing through from one city and village to another, teaching, and proceeding on his way to Jerusalem. And he was passing through from one city and village to another, teaching, and proceeding on his way to Jerusalem.
13:23 εἶπεν δέ τις αὐτῷ, κύριε, εἰ ὀλίγοι οἱ σῳζόμενοι;
23 εἶπε δέ τις αὐτῷ, κύριε, εἰ ὀλίγοι οἱ σωζόμενοι;
And someone said to him, “Lord, are there just a few who are being saved?” And he said to them, And someone said to him, “Lord, are there just a few who are being saved?” And he said to them,
“Strive to enter through the narrow door; for many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able. “Strive to enter through the narrow gate; for many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able.
Once the homeowner gets up and shuts the door, and you begin to stand outside and knock on the door, saying, ‘Lord, open up to us!’ And in response to you, he will say, ‘I don’t know where you are from.’ Once the homeowner gets up and shuts the door, and you begin to stand outside and knock on the door, saying, ‘Lord, Lord, open up to us!’ And in response to you, he will say, ‘I don’t know where you are from.’
Then you will begin to say, ‘We ate and drank in your presence, and you taught in our streets’; Then you will begin to say, ‘We ate and drank in your presence, and you taught in our streets’;
and he will say, ‘I tell you, I don’t know where you are from; depart from me, all you workers of iniquity.’ and he will say, ‘I tell you, I don’t know where you are from; depart from me, all you workers of iniquity.’
In that place there will be weeping and grinding of teeth when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacōb and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but yourselves being thrown out. In that place there will be weeping and grinding of teeth when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacōb and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but yourselves being thrown out.
And they will come from east and west and from north and south, and will recline at the table in the kingdom of God. And they will come from east and west and from north and south, and will recline at the table in the kingdom of God.
And listen! some are last who will be first and some are first who will be last.” And listen! some are last who will be first and some are first who will be last.”

Weeping over Jerusalem
(Matt 23:37-39)

And he said to them, “After going, tell that fox, ‘Listen! I cast out demons and perform cures today and tomorrow, and on the third day I am finished.’ And he said to them, “After going, tell that fox, ‘Listen! I cast out demons and perform cures today and tomorrow, and on the third day I am finished.’
Nevertheless it is necessary for me to proceed today and tomorrow and the next day; for it is not possible that a prophet would perish outside of Jerusalem. Nevertheless it is necessary for me to proceed today and tomorrow and the next day; for it is not possible that a prophet would perish outside of Jerusalem.
Oh Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones the ones who have been sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, the same way as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you didn’t want it! Oh Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones the ones who have been sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, the same way as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you didn’t want it!
Look! Your house is left to you desolate; and I say to you, you will not see me until the time comes when you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!’[2] Look! Your house is left to you desolate; and I say to you, you will not see me until the time comes when you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!’”
