The Unity of the Body

Therefore I, the prisoner of the Lord, encourage you to walk worthy of the calling by which you have been called, Therefore I, the prisoner of the Lord, encourage you to walk worthy of the calling by which you have been called,
There is one body and one Spirit, just as also you were called in one assurance of your calling; There is one body and one Spirit, just as also you were called in one assurance of your calling;
one Lord, one faith, one baptism, One Lord, one faith, one baptism,
one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all. one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in you all.
But to each one of us, grace was given according to the measure of Christ’s gift. But to each one of us, grace was given according to the measure of Christ’s gift.
Therefore it says, “After ascending on high, he captured a group of captives,
And he gave gifts to men.”[1]
Therefore it says, “After ascending on high, he captured a group of captives,
And he gave gifts to men.”[1]
4:9 τὸ δὲ Ἀνέβη τί ἐστιν, εἰ μὴ ὅτι καὶ κατέβη εἰς τὰ κατώτερα [μέρη] τῆς γῆς; 9 τὸ δέ, Ἀνέβη, τί ἐστιν εἰ μὴ ὅτι καὶ κατέβη πρῶτον εἰς τὰ κατώτερα μέρη τῆς γῆς;
(Now this clause, “He ascended,” what does it mean except that he also had descended into the lower parts of the earth? (Now this clause, “He ascended,” what does it mean except that he also first had descended into the lower parts of the earth?
He who descended is himself also he who ascended far above all the heavens, so that he might fill all things.) He who descended is himself also he who ascended far above all the heavens, so that he might fill all things.)
And he gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, And he gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers,
for the equipment of the saints for the work of service, for the building of the body of Christ; for the equipment of the saints for the work of service, for the building of the body of Christ;
until we all arrive at the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ. until we all arrive at the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ.
but speaking the truth in love, we may cause all things to grow into him who is the head, even Christ, but speaking the truth in love, we may cause all things to grow into him who is the head, even Christ,
from whom the whole body, being connected and held together by what every joint supplies, according the operation of each individual part, causes the growth of the body for the building of itself in love. from whom the whole body, being connected and held together by what every joint supplies, according the operation of each individual part, causes the growth of the body for the building of itself in love.

The Old Life and the New

So this I say, and affirm in the Lord, that you may no longer walk just as the Gentiles also walk, in the futility of their mind, So this I say, and affirm in the Lord, that you may no longer walk just as the rest of the Gentiles also walk, in the futility of their mind,
being darkened in their understanding, excluded from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the callousness of their heart; being darkened in their understanding, excluded from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the callousness of their heart;

if indeed you have heard him and have been taught in him, just as truth is in Jesus, if indeed you have heard him and have been taught in him, just as truth is in Jesus,
that, in reference to your former behaviour, to put away the old man, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit, that, in reference to your former behaviour, to put away the old man, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit,
and to be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and to be renewed in the spirit of your mind,
and to put on the new man, which according to God has been created in righteousness and uprightness of the truth. and to put on the new man, which according to God has been created in righteousness and uprightness of the truth.
