The People Rebel
1 And all the congregation lifted up their voice, and cried; and the people wept that night.
1 And after lifting up, all the congregation gave voice, the people also kept weeping that whole night. | 1 And all the congregation lifted up and gave voice, the people also kept weeping that whole night. |
2 And all the sons of Israēl murmured against Moses and against Aaron; and the whole congregation said to them, “If only that we had died in the land of Egypt! Or if only we had died in this wilderness!
2 And all the sons of Israēl kept grumbling against Moses and Aarōn; and all the congregation said to them, “Would that we had died in the land of Aigypt! Or if we had died in this wilderness! | 2 And all the sons of Israēl were grumbling against Moses and Aarōn, and all the congregation said to them, “Would that we had died in the land of Aigypt! Or if we had died in this wilderness! |
3 And why has Yahweh brought us to this land, to fall by the sword, that our wives and our children should be a prey? Wouldn’t it be better for us to return to Egypt?”

3 And why is the Lord bringing us into this land to fall in war? Our wives and children will become plunder! Now then, it is better for us to return into Aigypt.” | 3 And why is the Lord bringing us into this land to fall in war? Our wives and children will become plunder! 4 And they said one to another, “Let’s make a captain, and let’s return to Egypt.”
4 And they said one to the other, “Let’s appoint a leader and return into Aigypt.” | 4 And they said to one another, “Let us appoint a leader and return into Aigypt.” |
5 Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the sons of Israēl.
5 And Moses and Aarōn fell face down before all the congregation of Israēl’s sons. | 5 And Moses and Aarōn fell face down before all the congregation of Israēl’s sons. |
6 And Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who were of those who searched the land, tore their clothes.
6 But Jēsous the son of Navē and Chaleb the son of Jephonnē, of those who had spied out the land, ripped their clothes, | 6 But Jēsous the son of Navē and Chaleb the son of Jephonnē, of those who had spied out the land, ripped their clothes, |
7 And they spoke to all the company of the sons of Israēl, saying, “The land, which we passed through to search, is an exceedingly good land.
7 and they said to all the congregation of Israēl’s sons, saying, “The land, that which we spied out, is very, very good. | 7 and they said to all the congregation of Israēl’s sons, saying, “The land, that which we spied out, is very, very good. |
8 If Yahweh delights in us, then he will bring us into this land, and give it to us: a land that flows with milk and honey.
8 If the Lord is preferring us, he will bring us into this land and give it to us; a land that is flowing with milk and honey. | 8 If the Lord is choosing us, he will bring us into this land and give it to us; a land that is flowing with milk and honey. |
9 Only don’t rebel against Yahweh, nor fear the people of the land; for they are bread for us; their defence is departed from them, and Yahweh is with us; don’t fear them.”
9 But don’t become deserters away from the Lord. But as for you, don’t fear the people of the land, because they are food for us; for the ideal time has withdrawn from them, but the Lord is among us. Don’t fear them.” | 9 But don’t become deserters from the Lord. But as for you, do not fear the people of the land, because they are food for us; for the right time has departed from them, but the Lord is among us. Don’t fear them.” |
10 But all the congregation wanted to stone them with stones. And the glory of Yahweh appeared in the tent of the congregation before all the sons of Israēl.

Moses Pleads for the People
11 And Yahweh said to Moses, “How long will this people spurn me? And when will they believe me, for all the signs which I have shown among them?
11 And the Lord said to Moses, “How long is this people going to provoke me, and how long are they not going to believe me in all the signs that I have performed among them? | 11 And the Lord said to Moses, “How long is this people going to provoke me, and how long are they not going to believe me in all the signs that I have performed among them? |
12 I will smite them with pestilence, and disinherit them, and will make of you a greater and mightier nation than they.”
12 I will strike them with death, and I will destroy them, and I will make you and your father’s house into a great nation and more numerous than this.” | 12 I will strike them with death, and I will destroy them, and I will make you and your father’s house into a great nation and more numerous than this.” |
13 And Moses said to Yahweh, “Then the Egyptians shall hear it, (for you brought up this people in your might from among them;)
13 And Moses said to the Lord, “Then Aigypt will hear that you brought up this people by your strength out of them. | 13 And Moses said to the Lord, “Then Aigypt will hear that you brought up this people by your strength from them. |
14 And they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land; for they have heard that you Yahweh are among this people, that you Yahweh are seen face to face, and that your cloud stands over them, and that you go before them, by day time in a pillar of a cloud, and in a pillar of fire by night.
14 But also, all those who dwell on this land have heard that you are Lord among this people. You who are seen with eyes by eyes, O Lord, and your cloud has stood over them, and you go in front of them in a pillar of cloud during the day and in a pillar of fire by the night. | 14 But also, all those who dwell on this land have heard that you are Lord among this people. You who are seen with eyes by eyes, O Lord, and your cloud has stood over them, and you go in front of them in a pillar of cloud during the day and in a pillar of fire by the night. |
15 Now if you shall kill all this people as one man, then the nations which have heard the fame of you will speak, saying,
15 And you shall wipe out this people as one man; and the nations, as many as have heard your name, shall speak, saying, | 15 And you shall wipe out this people as one man, and the nations, as many as have heard your name, shall speak, saying, |
16 ‘Because Yahweh was not able to bring this people into the land which he swore to them, therefore he has slain them in the wilderness.’
16 ‛Because the Lord was not able to bring this people into the land, which he solemnly promised to them, he dispersed them in the wilderness.’ | 16 ‛Because the Lord was not able to bring this people into the land, which he solemnly promised to them, he dispersed them in the wilderness.’ |
17 And now, I beseech you, let the power of my Lord be great, according as you have spoken, saying,
17 And now let your strength be elevated, O Lord, in the manner that you spoke, saying, | 17 And now let your strength be exalted, O Lord, in the manner that you spoke, saying, |
18 ‘Yahweh is longsuffering, and of great mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression, and by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation.’
18 ‛The Lord is patient and very merciful and true, removing lawlessness and injustice and sin. And by cleansing he will not cleanse the guilty, repaying sins of fathers on children until the third and fourth generation .’ | 18 ‛The Lord is patient and very merciful and true, removing lawlessness and injustice and sin. And by cleansing he will not cleanse the guilty, repaying sins of fathers on children until the third and fourth generation .’ |
19 Pardon, I beseech you, the iniquity of this people according to the greatness of your mercy, and as you have forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now.”
19 Forgive this people their sin according to your great mercy, just as you were gracious to them from Aigypt until the present.” | 19 Forgive this people their sin according to your great mercy, just as you were gracious to them from Aigypt until the present.” |
The Lord Pardons and Rebukes
20 And Yahweh said, “I have pardoned according to your word.
20 And the Lord said to Moses, “I am merciful to them according to your word. | 20 And the Lord said to Moses, “I am merciful to them according to your word. |
21 But as truly as I live, all the earth shall be filled with the glory of Yahweh.
21 But I live, and my name is living; the glory of the Lord shall also fill all the earth. | 21 But I live, and my name is living; the glory of the Lord shall also fill all the earth. |
22 Because all those men who have seen my glory, and my miracles, which I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and have tempted me now these ten times, and haven’t listened to my voice;
22 For all the men who saw my glory and the signs that I performed in Aigypt and in this wilderness and tested me this tenth time and didn’t listen to my voice, | 22 For all the men who saw my glory and the signs that I performed in Aigypt and in this wilderness and tested me this tenth time and didn’t listen to my voice, |
23 Surely they shall not see the land which I swore to their fathers, neither shall any of those who provoked me see it.
23 certainly they shall not see the land that I solemnly promised to their fathers. Instead, their children who are with me here, as many as don’t know good nor evil, every inexperienced younger person–to these I will give the land; but all those who provoked me shall not see it. | 23 certainly they shall not see the land that I solemnly promised to their fathers. Instead, their children who are with me here, as many as do not know good nor evil, every inexperienced younger person–to these I will give the land; but all those who provoked me shall not see it. |
24 But my servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and has followed me fully, him will I bring into the land into which he went; and his seed shall possess it.
24 But my servant Chaleb, because there was another spirit in him and he followed me, I too will bring him into the land, there where he entered, and his offspring shall inherit it. | 24 But my servant Chaleb, because there was another spirit in him and he followed me, I too will bring him into the land, there where he entered, and his offspring shall inherit it. |
25 (Now the Amalekites and the Canaanites dwelt in the valley.) Tomorrow turn, and go into the wilderness by the way of the Red Sea.”
25 But Amalēk and the Chananite are residing in the valley; tomorrow, as for you, return, and depart into the wilderness, by way of the Red Sea.” | 25 But Amalēk and the Chananite are residing in the valley; tomorrow, as for you, return, and depart into the wilderness, by way of the Red Sea.” |
26 And Yahweh spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying,
26 And the Lord said to Moses and Aarōn, saying, | 26 And the Lord said to Moses and Aarōn, saying, |
27 “How long shall I bear with this evil congregation, which murmurs against me? I have heard the murmurings of the sons of Israēl, which they murmur against me.
