Chapter 49

AlexandrinusVaticanus

1 Concerning the Ammonites, thus says Yahweh; Has Israēl no sons? Has he no heir? Why then does their king inherit Gad, and his people dwell in his cities?

οὕτως εἶπεν κύριος μὴ υἱοὶ οὔκ εἰσιν ἐν Ἰσραήλ, παραλημψόμενος οὐκ ἔστιν αὐτοῖς;
διὰ τί παρέλαβεν Μελχὸμ τὸν Γάδ, καὶ λαὸς αὐτῶν ἐν πόλεσιν αὐτῶν ἐνοικήσει;
1 Τοῖς υἱοῖς Ἀμμὼνοὕτως εἶπε Κύριος· μὴ υἱοὶ οὐκ εἰσὶν ἐν Ἰσραήλ, παραληψόμενος οὐκ ἐστιν αὐτοῖς;
διατί παρέλαβε Μελχὸλ τὴν Γαλαάδ, καὶ λαὸς αὐτῶν ἐν πόλεσιν αὐτῶν ἐνοικήσει;
1 Concerning the sons of Ammon thus says the Lord, Are there no sons in Israēl? Or have they no one to succeed them? Why has Melchol inherited Galaad, and why shall their people dwell in their cities? 1 Concerning the sons of Ammon thus says the Lord, Are there no sons in Israēl? Or have they no one to succeed them? Why has Melchol inherited Galaad, and why shall their people dwell in their cities?

2 Therefore, behold, the days come, says Yahweh, that I will cause an alarm of war to be heard in Rabbah of the Ammonites; and it shall be a desolate heap, and her daughters shall be burned with fire: then shall Israēl be heir to those who were his heirs, says Yahweh.

2 Therefore, behold, the days come, says the Lord, when I will cause to be heard in Rabbath a tumult of wars; and they shall become a waste and ruined place, and her altars shall be burned with fire; then shall Israēl succeed to his dominion. 2 Therefore, behold, the days come, says the Lord, when I will cause to be heard in Rabbath a tumult of wars; and they shall become a waste and ruined place, and her altars shall be burned with fire; then shall Israēl succeed to his dominion.

3 Howl, Oh Heshbon, for Ai is spoiled: cry, you daughters of Rabbah, gird you with sackcloth; lament, and run to and fro by the hedges; for their king shall go into captivity, and his priests and his princes together.

3 Howl, Oh Esebon, for Gai has perished; cry, you daughters of Rabbath, gird yourselves with sack-clothes, and lament; for Melchol shall go into banishment, his priests and his princes together. 3 Howl, Oh Esebon, for Gai has perished; cry, you daughters of Rabbath, gird yourselves with sack-clothes, and lament; for Melchol shall go into banishment, his priests and his princes together.

4 Why glory you in the valleys, your flowing valley, Oh backsliding daughter? That trusted in her treasures, saying, Who shall come to me?

4 τί ἀγαλλιάσῃ ἐν τοῖς πεδίοις Ἐνακίμ, θύγατερ ἰταμίας πεποιθυῖα ἐπὶ θησαυροῖς αὐτῆς λέγουσα τίς εἰσελεύσεται ἐπ’ ἐμέ; 4 τί ἀγαλλιᾶσθε ἐν τοῖς πεδίοις Ἐνακείμ, θύγατερ ἰταμίας, πεποιθυῖα ἐπὶ θησαυροῖς αὐτῆς, λέγουσα· τίς εἰσελεύσεται ἐπ’ ἐμέ;
4 Why do you exult in the plains of the Enakim, you haughty daughter, that trust in your treasures, that say, Who shall come in to me? 4 Why do you exult in the plains of the Enakim, you haughty daughter, that trust in your treasures, that say, Who shall come in to me?

5 Behold, I will bring a fear on you, says Adonai Yahweh of armies, from all those who be about you; and you shall be driven out every man right forth; and none shall gather up him who wanders.

5 Behold, I will bring terror on you, says the Lord, from all the country all around you; and you shall be scattered everyone right before him, and there is none to gather you. 5 Behold, I will bring terror on you, says the Lord, from all the country all around you; and you shall be scattered everyone right before him, and there is none to gather you.

6 And afterward I will bring again the captivity of the children of Ammon, says Yahweh.

7 Concerning Edom, thus says Yahweh of armies; Is wisdom no more in Teman? Is counsel perished from the prudent? Is their wisdom vanished?

7 Concerning Idumea, thus says the Lord; There is no longer wisdom in Thaeman, counsel has perished from the wise ones, their wisdom is gone, 7 Concerning Idumea, thus says the Lord; There is no longer wisdom in Thaeman, counsel has perished from the wise ones, their wisdom is gone,

8 Flee you, turn back, dwell deep, Oh inhabitants of Dedan; for I will bring the calamity of Esau on him, the time that I will visit him.

8 their place has been deceived. Dig deep for a dwelling, you who inhabit Daedam, for he has wrought grievously: I brought trouble on him in the time at which I visited him. 8 their place has been deceived. Dig deep for a dwelling, you who inhabit Daedam, for he has wrought grievously: I brought trouble on him in the time at which I visited him.

9 If grapegatherers come to you, would they not leave some gleaning grapes? If thieves by night, they will destroy until they have enough.

9 For grape-gatherers are come, who shall not leave you a remnant; as thieves by night, they shall lay their hand on your possessions. 9 For grape-gatherers are come, who shall not leave you a remnant; as thieves by night, they shall lay their hand on your possessions.

10 But I have made Esau bare, I have uncovered his secret places, and he shall not be able to hide himself: his seed is spoiled, and his brothers, and his neighbours, and he is not.

10 For I have stripped Esau, I have uncovered their secret places; they shall have no power to hide themselves, they have perished each by the hand of his brother, my neighbour, and it is impossible 10 For I have stripped Esau, I have uncovered their secret places; they shall have no power to hide themselves, they have perished each by the hand of his brother, my neighbour, and it is impossible

11 Leave your fatherless children, I will preserve them alive; and let your widows trust in me.

11 for your fatherless one to be left to live, but I shall live, and the widows trust in me. 11 for your fatherless one to be left to live, but I shall live, and the widows trust in me.

12 For thus says Yahweh; Behold, they whose judgment wasn’t to drink of the cup have assuredly drunken; and are you he who shall altogether go unpunished? You shall not go unpunished, but you shall surely drink of it.

12 For thus says the Lord; They who were not appointed to drink the cup have drunk it; and you shall by no means be cleared. 12 For thus says the Lord; They who were not appointed to drink the cup have drunk it; and you shall by no means be cleared.

13 For I have sworn by myself, says Yahweh, that Bozrah shall become a desolation, a reproach, a waste, and a curse; and all the cities of it shall be perpetual ruins.

13 for by myself I have sworn, says the Lord, that you shall be in the midst of her an impassable land, and a reproach, and a curse; and all her cities shall be desert forever. 13 for by myself I have sworn, says the Lord, that you shall be in the midst of her an impassable land, and a reproach, and a curse; and all her cities shall be desert forever.

14 I have heard a rumour from Yahweh, and an ambassador is sent to the heathen, saying, gather together, and come against her, and rise up to the battle.

14 I have heard a report from the Lord, and he has sent messengers to the nations, saying, Assemble yourselves, and come against her; rise you up to war. 14 I have heard a report from the Lord, and he has sent messengers to the nations, saying, Assemble yourselves, and come against her; rise you up to war.

15 For, lo, I will make you small among the heathen, and despised among men.

15 I have made you small among the nations, utterly contemptible among men. 15 I have made you small among the nations, utterly contemptible among men.

16 Your terribleness has deceived you, and the pride of your heart, Oh you who dwells in the clefts of the rock, that hold the height of the hill: though you should make your nest as high as the eagle, I will bring you down from there, says Yahweh.

16 Your insolence has risen up against you, the fierceness of your heart has burst the holes of the rocks, it has seized on the strength of a lofty hill; for as an eagle he set his nest on high: from there will I bring you down. 16 Your insolence has risen up against you, the fierceness of your heart has burst the holes of the rocks, it has seized on the strength of a lofty hill; for as an eagle he set his nest on high: from there will I bring you down.

17 Also Edom shall be a desolation: everyone who goes by it shall be astonished, and shall hiss at all the plagues of it.

17 And Idumea shall be a desert: everyone who passes by shall hiss at it. 17 And Idumea shall be a desert: everyone who passes by shall hiss at it.

18 As in the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighbour cities of it, says Yahweh, no man shall abide there, neither shall a son of man dwell in it.

18 As Sodom was overthrown and Gomorrha and they who stayed in her, says the Lord Almighty, no man shall dwell there, nor shall any son of man inhabit there. 18 As Sodom was overthrown and Gomorrha and they who stayed in her, says the Lord Almighty, no man shall dwell there, nor shall any son of man inhabit there.

19 Behold, he shall come up like a lion from the swelling of Jordan against the habitation of the strong; but I will suddenly make him run away from her; and who is a chosen man, that I may appoint over her? For who is like me? And who will appoint me the time? And who is that shepherd that will stand before me?

ὅτι τίς ὥσπερ ἐγώ;
καὶ τίς ἀντιστήσεταί μοι καὶ τίς οὗτος ποιμήν, ὃς στήσεται κατὰ πρόσωπόν μου;
19 ἰδοὺ ὥσπερ λέων ἀναβήσεται ἐκ μέσου τοῦ Ἰορδάνου εἰς τόπον Αἰθάμ, ὅτι ταχὺ ἐκδιώξω αὐτοὺς ἀπ’ αὐτῆς· καὶ τοὺς νεανίσκους ἐπ’ αὐτὴν ἐπιστήσατε, ὅτι τίς ὥσπερ ἐγώ;
καὶ τίς ἀντιστήσεταί μοι;
καὶ τίς οὗτος ποιμήν, ὃς στήσεται κατὰ πρόσωπόν μου;
19 Behold, he shall come up as a lion out of the midst of Jordan to the place of Ætham; for I will speedily drive them from it, and do you set the young men against her; for who is like me? And who will withstand me? And who is this shepherd, who shall confront me? 19 Behold, he shall come up as a lion out of the midst of Jordan to the place of Ætham; for I will speedily drive them from it, and do you set the young men against her; for who is like me? And who will withstand me? And who is this shepherd, who shall confront me?

20 Therefore hear the counsel of Yahweh, that he has taken against Edom; and his purposes, that he has purposed against the inhabitants of Teman: Surely the least of the flock shall draw them out: surely he shall make their habitations desolate with them.

20 Therefore hear you the counsel of the Lord, which he has framed against Idumea; and his device, which he has devised against the inhabitants of Thaeman: surely the least of the sheep shall be swept off; surely their dwelling shall be made desolate for them. 20 Therefore hear you the counsel of the Lord, which he has framed against Idumea; and his device, which he has devised against the inhabitants of Thaeman: surely the least of the sheep shall be swept off; surely their dwelling shall be made desolate for them.

21 The earth is moved at the noise of their fall, at the cry the noise of it was heard in the Red Sea.

21 For at the sound of their fall the earth was scared, and the cry of the sea wasn’t heard. 21 For at the sound of their fall the earth was scared, and the cry of the sea wasn’t heard.

22 Behold, he shall come up and fly as the eagle, and spread his wings over Bozrah; and at that day shall the heart of the mighty men of Edom be as the heart of a woman in her pangs.

22 Behold, he shall look on her as an eagle, and spread forth his wings over her strongholds; and the heart of the mighty men of Idumea shall be in that day as the heart of a woman in her pangs. 22 Behold, he shall look on her as an eagle, and spread forth his wings over her strongholds; and the heart of the mighty men of Idumea shall be in that day as the heart of a woman in her pangs.

23 Concerning Damascus. Hamath is confounded, and Arpad; for they have heard evil tidings: they are fainthearted; there is sorrow on the sea; it cannot be quiet.

23 Concerning Damascus. Emath is brought to shame, and Arphad; for they have heard an evil report: they are amazed, they are angry, they shall be utterly unable to rest. 23 Concerning Damascus. Emath is brought to shame, and Arphad; for they have heard an evil report: they are amazed, they are angry, they shall be utterly unable to rest.

24 Damascus is grown feeble, and turns herself to flee, and fear has seized on her: anguish and sorrows have taken her, as a woman in travail.

24 Damascus is utterly weakened, she is put to flight; trembling has seized on her. 24 Damascus is utterly weakened, she is put to flight; trembling has seized on her.

25 How is the city of praise not left, the city of my joy!

25 πῶς οὐχὶ ἐγκατέλιπεν πόλιν ἐμήν;
25 πῶς οὐχὶ ἐγκατέλιπε πόλιν ἐμήν;
25 How has she not left my city, they have loved the village? 25 How has she not left my city, they have loved the village?

26 Therefore her young men shall fall in her streets, and all the men of war shall be cut off in that day, says Yahweh of armies.

26 Therefore shall the young men fall in your streets, and all your warriors shall fall, says the Lord. 26 Therefore shall the young men fall in your streets, and all your warriors shall fall, says the Lord.

27 And I will kindle a fire in the wall of Damascus, and it shall consume the palaces of Ben-hadad.

27 And I will kindle a fire in the wall of Damascus, and it shall devour the streets of the son of Ader. 27 And I will kindle a fire in the wall of Damascus, and it shall devour the streets of the son of Ader.

28 Concerning Kedar, and concerning the kingdoms of Hazor, which Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon shall smite, thus says Yahweh; Arise you, go up to Kedar, and spoil the men of the east.

28 Concerning Kedar the queen of the palace, whom Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon smote, thus says the Lord; Arise you, and go up to Kedar, and fill the sons of Kedem. 28 Concerning Kedar the queen of the palace, whom Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon smote, thus says the Lord; Arise you, and go up to Kedar, and fill the sons of Kedem.

29 Their tents and their flocks shall they take away: they shall take to themselves their curtains, and all their vessels, and their camels; and they shall cry to them, Fear is on every side.

29 They shall take their tents and their sheep, they shall take for themselves their garments, and all their baggage and their camels; and summon you destruction against them from every side. 29 They shall take their tents and their sheep, they shall take for themselves their garments, and all their baggage and their camels; and summon you destruction against them from every side.

30 Flee, get you far off, dwell deep, Oh you inhabitants of Hazor, says Yahweh; for Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon has taken counsel against you, and has conceived a purpose against you.

30 Flee you, dig very deep for a dwelling-place, you who dwell in the palace; for the king of Babylon has framed a counsel, and devised a device against you. 30 Flee you, dig very deep for a dwelling-place, you who dwell in the palace; for the king of Babylon has framed a counsel, and devised a device against you.

31 Arise, get you up to the wealthy nation, that dwells without care, says Yahweh, which have neither gates nor bars, which dwell alone.

31 Rise up, and go up against a nation settled and dwelling at ease, who have no doors, nor bolts, nor bars, who dwell alone. 31 Rise up, and go up against a nation settled and dwelling at ease, who have no doors, nor bolts, nor bars, who dwell alone.

32 And their camels shall be a booty, and the multitude of their cattle a spoil; and I will scatter into all winds those who are in the utmost corners; and I will bring their calamity from all sides of it, says Yahweh.

32 And their camels shall be a spoil, and the multitude of their cattle shall be destroyed; and I will scatter them as chaff with every wind, having their hair cut about their foreheads, I will bring on their overthrow from all sides, says the Lord. 32 And their camels shall be a spoil, and the multitude of their cattle shall be destroyed; and I will scatter them as chaff with every wind, having their hair cut about their foreheads, I will bring on their overthrow from all sides, says the Lord.

33 And Hazor shall be a dwelling for dragons, and a desolation forever: there shall no man abide there, nor any son of man dwell in it.

33 And the palace shall be a resting-place for ostriches, and desolate forever: no man shall abide there, and no son of man shall dwell there. 33 And the palace shall be a resting-place for ostriches, and desolate forever: no man shall abide there, and no son of man shall dwell there.

34 The word of Yahweh that came to Jeremiah the prophet against Elam in the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah, saying,

34 The prophecies of Jeremias against the nations of Ælam. 34 The prophecies of Jeremias against the nations of Ælam.

35 Thus says Yahweh of armies; Behold, I will break the bow of Elam, the chief of their might.

35 Thus says the Lord, The bow of Ælam is broken, even the chief of their power. 35 Thus says the Lord, The bow of Ælam is broken, even the chief of their power.

36 And on Elam will I bring the four winds from the four quarters of heaven, and will scatter them toward all those winds; and there shall be no nation to which the outcasts of Elam shall not come.

36 And I will bring on Ælam the four winds from the four corners of heaven, and I will disperse them toward all these winds; and there shall be no nation to which they shall not come–even the outcasts of Ælam. 36 And I will bring on Ælam the four winds from the four corners of heaven, and I will disperse them toward all these winds; and there shall be no nation to which they shall not come–even the outcasts of Ælam.

37 For I will cause Elam to be dismayed before their enemies, and before those who seek their life; and I will bring evil on them even my fierce anger, says Yahweh; and I will send the sword after them, till I have consumed them.

37 And I will put them in fear before their enemies that seek their life; and I will bring evils on them according to my great anger; and I will send forth my sword after them, until I have utterly destroyed them. 37 And I will put them in fear before their enemies that seek their life; and I will bring evils on them according to my great anger; and I will send forth my sword after them, until I have utterly destroyed them.

38 And I will set my throne in Elam, and will destroy from there the king and the princes, says Yahweh.

38 And I will set my throne in Ælam, and will send forth from there king and rulers. 38 And I will set my throne in Ælam, and will send forth from there king and rulers.

39 But it will happen in the latter days, that I will bring again the captivity of Elam, says Yahweh.

39 But it will happen at the end of days, that I will turn the captivity of Ælam, says the Lord. 39 But it will happen at the end of days, that I will turn the captivity of Ælam, says the Lord.
