3:1 After these things did king Ahasuerus promote Haman the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, and advanced him, and set his seat above all the princes that were with him.
| 3:1 μετὰ δὲ ταῦτα ἐδόξασεν ὁ βασιλεὺς Ἀρταξέρξης Ἀμὰν Ἁμαδάθου Βουγαῖον καὶ ὕψωσεν αὐτόν, καὶ ἐπρωτοβάθρει πάντων τῶν φίλων αὐτοῦ. | 3:1 Καὶ ἐγένετο μετὰ τοὺς λόγους τούτους, ἐμεγάλυνεν ὁ βασιλεὺς Ἀσσυῆρος Ἁμὰν Ἁμαδάθου Βουγαῖον καὶ ἐπῆρεν αὐτὸν καὶ ἔθηκε τὸν θρόνον αὐτοῦ ὑπεράνω τῶν φίλων αὐτοῦ ὥστε κάμπτεσθαι καὶ προσκυνεῖν αὐτῷ ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν πάντας. |
| 3:1 And after this king Artaxerxes highly honoured Aman son of Hamadathes, the Bugaean, and exalted him, and set his seat above all his friends. | 3:1 And it happened after these things that King Assyeros promoted Haman son of Hamadathos, a Bougean, and advanced him and set his throne above those of his Friends so that all would bend over and bow themselves on the ground before him. |
3:2 And all the king’s servants, that were in the king’s gate, bowed, and reverenced Haman; for the king had so commanded concerning him. But Mordecai didn’t bow, nor did him reverence.

| 3:2 And all in the palace did him obeisance, for so the king had given orders to do; but Mardochaios didn’t do him obeisance. | 3:2 Therefore, although everyone would do obeisance to him in accord with the king’s ordinance, Mardochaios would not do obeisance before him. |
3:3 Then the king’s servants, which were in the king’s gate, said to Mordecai, Why transgress you the king’s commandment?
| 3:3 καὶ ἐλάλησαν οἱ ἐν τῇ αὐλῇ τοῦ βασιλέως τῷ Μαρδοχαίῳ, Μαρδοχαῖε, τί παρακούεις τὰ ὑπὸ τοῦ βασιλέως λεγόμενα; | 3:3 καὶ εἶδον οἱ παῖδες τοῦ βασιλέως ὅτι ὁ Μαρδοχαῖος οὐ προσκυνεῖ τὸν Ἁμάν, καὶ εἶπον οἱ παῖδες τοῦ βασιλέως πρὸς τὸν Μαρδοχαῖον Τί σὺ παρακούεις τοῦ βασιλέως καὶ οὐ προσκυνεῖς τὸν Ἁμάν; |
| 3:3 And they in the king’s palace said to Mardochaios, Mardochaios, why do you transgress the commands of the king? | 3:3 And the servants of the king saw that Mardochaios was not doing obeisance before Haman, and the servants of the king said to Mardochaios, “Why do you disobey the king and not do obeisance before Haman?” |
3:4 Now it happened, when they spoke daily to him, and he didn’t listen to them, that they told Haman, to see whether Mordecai’s matters would stand; for he had told those who he was a Jew.

| 3:4 Thus they spoke daily to him, but he didn’t listen to them; so they represented to Aman that Mardochaios resisted the commands of the king; and Mardochaios had shown to those who he was a Jew. | 3:4 So he told them that he was a Judean. And they informed Haman about him. |
3:5 And when Haman saw that Mordecai didn’t bow, nor did him reverence, then was Haman full of wrath.
| 3:5 καὶ ἐπιγνοὺς Ἀμὰν ὅτι οὐ προσκυνεῖ αὐτῷ Μαρδοχαῖος, ἐθυμώθη σφόδρα | 3:5 ὡς δὲ ἤκουσεν Ἁμάν, ἐθυμώθη τῷ Μαρδοχαίῳ, καὶ ὀργὴ ἐξεκαύθη ἐν αὐτῷ, καὶ ἐζήτει ἀνελεῖν τὸν Μαρδοχαῖον καὶ πάντα τὸν λαὸν αὐτοῦ ἐν ἡμέρᾳ μιᾷ. |
| 3:5 And when Aman understood that Mardochaios didn’t obeisance to him, he was greatly enraged, | 3:5 Now when Haman heard, he was provoked to jealousy against Mardochaios, and rage burned within him. So he was seeking to destroy Mardochaios and all his people on one day. |
3:6 And he thought scorn to lay hands on Mordecai alone; for they had showed him the people of Mordecai; therefore Haman sought to destroy all the Jews that were throughout the whole kingdom of Ahasuerus, even the people of Mordecai.
| 3:6 καὶ ἐβουλεύσατο ἀφανίσαι πάντας τοὺς ὑπὸ τὴν Ἀρταξέρξου βασιλείαν Ἰουδαίους. | 3:6 καὶ παραζηλώσας ὁ Ἁμὰν καὶ κινηθεὶς ἐν παντὶ τῷ θυμῷ αὐτοῦ ἐρυθρὸς ἐγένετο ἐκτρέπων αὐτὸν ἐξ ὀφθαλμῶν αὐτοῦ καὶ καρδίᾳ φαύλῃ ἐλάλει τῷ βασιλεῖ κακὰ περὶ Ἰσραήλ. |
| 3:6 and took counsel to destroy utterly all the Jews who were under the rule of Artaxerxes. | 3:6 Since Haman was provoked and all his rage was stirred up, he turned red, driving him from his sight. And with a malicious heart, he kept speaking evil to the king about Israēl, |
3:7 In the first month, that is, the month Nisan, in the 12th year of king Ahasuerus, they cast Pur, that is, the lot, before Haman from day today, and from month to month, to the 12th month, that is, the month Adar.
| 3:7 καὶ ἐποίησεν ψήφισμα ἐν ἔτει δωδεκάτῳ τῆς βασιλείας Ἀρταξέρξου καὶ ἔβαλεν κλήρους ἡμέραν ἐξ ἡμέρας καὶ μῆνα ἐκ μηνὸς ὥστε ἀπολέσαι ἐν μιᾷ ἡμέρᾳ τὸ γένος Μαρδοχαίου, καὶ ἔπεσεν ὁ κλῆρος εἰς τὴν τεσσαρεσκαιδεκάτην τοῦ μηνός, ὅς ἐστιν Ἀδάρ. | 3:7 καὶ ἐπορεύθη Ἁμὰν πρὸς τοὺς θεοὺς αὐτοῦ τοῦ ἐπιγνῶναι ἡμέραν θανάτου αὐτῶν, καὶ βάλλει κλήρους εἰς τὴν τρισκαιδεκάτην τοῦ μηνὸς Ἀδὰρ Νισὰν φονεύειν πάντας τοὺς Ἰουδαίους ἀπὸ ἀρσενικοῦ ἕως θηλυκοῦ καὶ διαρπάζειν τὰ νήπια. |
| 3:7 And he made a decree in the 12th year of the reign of Artaxerxes, and cast lots daily and monthly, to slay in one day the race of Mardochaios; and the lot fell on the 14th day of the month which is Adar. | 3:7 So Haman went to his gods to learn the day of their death and cast lots for the thirteenth day of the month of Adar Nisan to murder all the Judeans, from male to female, and to take their young children as plunder. |
3:8 And Haman said to king Ahasuerus, There is a certain people scattered abroad and dispersed among the people in all the provinces of your kingdom; and their laws are diverse from all people; neither keep they the king’s laws; therefore it is not for the king’s profit to suffer them.
| 3:8 καὶ ἐλάλησεν πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα Ἀρταξέρξην λέγων ὑπάρχει ἔθνος διεσπαρμένον ἐν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν ἐν πάσῃ τῇ βασιλείᾳ σου, οἱ δὲ νόμοι αὐτῶν ἔξαλλοι παρὰ πάντα τὰ ἔθνη, τῶν δὲ νόμων τοῦ βασιλέως παρακούουσιν, καὶ οὐ συμφέρει τῷ βασιλεῖ ἐᾶσαι αὐτούς· | 3:8 λέγων Ἔστι λαὸς διεσπαρμένος ἐν πάσαις ταῖς βασιλείαις, λαὸς πολέμου καὶ ἀπειθής, ἔξαλλα νόμιμα ἔχων, τοῖς δὲ νομίμοις σοῦ, βασιλεῦ, οὐ προσέχουσι γνωριζόμενοι ἐν πᾶσι τοῖς ἔθνεσι πονηροὶ ὄντες καὶ τὰ προστάγματά σου ἀθετοῦσι πρὸς καθαίρεσιν τῆς δόξης σου. |
| 3:8 And he spoke to king Artaxerxes, saying, There is a nation scattered among the nations in all your kingdom, and their laws differ from those of all the other nations; and they disobey the laws of the king; and it is not expedient for the king to let them alone. | 3:8 saying, “There is a people scattered throughout all the kingdoms, a people of war and insubordinate, who have different laws from your laws, Oh King. They do not pay heed though they are known among all nations because they are evil, and they set aside your commands to undermine your glory. |
3:9 If it please the king, let it be written that they may be destroyed; and I will pay 10,000 talents of silver to the hands of those who have the charge of the business, to bring it into the king’s treasuries.
| 3:9 εἰ δοκεῖ τῷ βασιλεῖ, δογματισάτω ἀπολέσαι αὐτούς, κἀγὼ διαγράψω εἰς τὸ γαζοφυλάκιον τοῦ βασιλέως ἀργυρίου τάλαντα μύρια. | 3:9 εἰ δοκεῖ οὖν τῷ βασιλεῖ, καὶ ἀγαθὴ ἡ κρίσις ἐν καρδίᾳ αὐτοῦ, δοθήτω μοι τὸ ἔθνος εἰς ἀπώλειαν, καὶ διαγράψω εἰς τὸ γαζοφυλάκιον ἀργυρίου τάλαντα μύρια. |
| 3:9 If it seem good to the king, let him make a decree to destroy them; and I will remit into the king’s treasury 10,000 talents of silver. | 3:9 Therefore, if it pleases the king and this judgment is good in his heart, let this nation be given to me for destruction, and I will pay into the treasury 10,000 talents of silver.” |
3:10 And the king took his ring from his hand, and gave it to Haman the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, the Jews’ enemy.
| 3:10 καὶ περιελόμενος ὁ βασιλεὺς τὸν δακτύλιον ἔδωκεν εἰς χεῖρα τῷ Ἀμὰν σφραγίσαι κατὰ τῶν γεγραμμένων κατὰ τῶν Ἰουδαίων. | 3:10 καὶ περιείλετο ὁ βασιλεὺς τὸ δακτύλιον ἀπὸ τῆς χειρὸς αὐτοῦ καὶ ἔδωκε τῷ Ἁμὰν λέγων Γράφε εἰς πάσας τὰς χώρας καὶ σφραγίζου τῷ δακτυλίῳ τοῦ βασιλέως· οὐ γὰρ ἔστιν ὃς ἀποστρέψει τὴν σφραγῖδα. |
| 3:10 And the king took off his ring, and gave it into the hands of Aman, to seal the decrees against the Jews. | 3:10 So the king took his signet ring from his hand and gave it to Haman saying, “Write to all the lands, and seal it with the signet ring of the king. For there is none who will reject the seal.” |
3:11 And the king said to Haman, The silver is given to you, the people also, to do with them as it seems good to you.
| 3:11 καὶ εἶπεν ὁ βασιλεὺς τῷ Ἀμὰν τὸ μὲν ἀργύριον ἔχε, τῷ δὲ ἔθνει χρῶ ὡς βούλει. | 3:11 καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ ὁ βασιλεὺς τὸ μὲν ἀργύριον ἔχε, τῷ δὲ ἔθνει χρῶ ὡς ἄν σοι ἀρεστὸν ᾖ. |
| 3:11 And the king said to Aman, Keep the silver, and treat the nation as you will. | 3:11 So the king said to him, “Keep the silver, but treat the nation as it pleases you.” |
3:12 Then were the king’s scribes called on the 13th day of the first month, and there was written according to all that Haman had commanded to the king’s lieutenants, and to the governors that were over every province, and to the rulers of every people of every province according to the writing of it, and to every people after their language; in the name of king Ahasuerus was it written, and sealed with the king’s ring.
| 3:12 καὶ ἐκλήθησαν οἱ γραμματεῖς τοῦ βασιλέως μηνὶ πρώτῳ τῇ τρισκαιδεκάτῃ καὶ ἔγραψαν, ὡς ἐπέταξεν Ἀμάν, τοῖς στρατηγοῖς καὶ τοῖς ἄρχουσιν κατὰ πᾶσαν χώραν ἀπὸ Ἰνδικῆς ἕως τῆς Αἰθιοπίας, ταῖς ἑκατὸν εἴκοσι ἑπτὰ χώραις, τοῖς τε ἄρχουσι τῶν ἐθνῶν κατὰ τὴν αὐτῶν λέξιν δι’ Ἀρταξέρξου τοῦ βασιλέως. | 3:12 N/A |
| 3:12 So the king’s recorders were called in the first month, on the 13th day, and they wrote as Aman commanded to the captains and governors in every province, from India even to Ethiopia, to 127 provinces; and to the rulers of the nations according to their several languages, in the name of king Artaxerxes. | 3:12 and sought until nightfall to understand it in every detail. |
3:13 And the letters were sent by posts into all the king’s provinces, to destroy, to kill, and to cause to perish, all Jews, both young and old, little children and women, in one day, even on the 13th day of the 12th month, which is the month Adar, and to take the spoil of them for a prey.
| 3:13 καὶ ἀπεστάλη διὰ βιβλιαφόρων εἰς τὴν Ἀρταξέρξου βασιλείαν ἀφανίσαι τὸ γένος τῶν Ἰουδαίων ἐν ἡμέρᾳ μιᾷ μηνὸς δωδεκάτου, ὅς ἐστιν Ἀδάρ, καὶ διαρπάσαι τὰ ὑπάρχοντα αὐτῶν. | 3:13 καὶ ἔσπευσε καὶ ἔδωκεν εἰς χεῖρας τρεχόντων ἱππέων. |
| 3:13 And the message was sent by posts throughout the kingdom of Artaxerxes, to destroy utterly the race of the Jews on the first day of the 12th month, which is Adar, and to plunder their goods. | 3:13 And he hurried and delivered it into the hands of swift horsemen. |

| B.4 informed us that a certain ill-disposed people is mixed up with all the tribes throughout the world, opposed in their law to every other nation, and continually neglecting the commands of the king, so that the united government blamelessly administered by us is not quietly established. | B.4 pointed out to us that there is scattered a certain hostile people, resident among all the tribes in the world who, on the one hand, have laws in opposition to those of every nation and, on the other, continually disregard the command of kings so that the kingdom can never attain stability. |
