Chapter 31
Alexandrinus | Vaticanus |

1 At the same time, says Yahweh, will I be the God of all the families of Israēl, and they shall be my people.
1 At that time, says the Lord, I will be a God to the family of Israēl, and they shall be to me a people. | 1 At that time, says the Lord, I will be a God to the family of Israēl, and they shall be to me a people. |
2 Thus says Yahweh, The people which were left of the sword found grace in the wilderness; even Israēl, when I went to cause him to rest.
2 Thus says the Lord, I found him warm in the wilderness with those who were slain with the sword: go you and destroy not Israēl. | 2 Thus says the Lord, I found him warm in the wilderness with those who were slain with the sword: go you and destroy not Israēl. |
3 Yahweh has appeared of old to me, saying, Yes, I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn you.
3 The Lord appeared to him from afar, saying, I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore have I drawn you in mercy. | 3 The Lord appeared to him from afar, saying, I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore have I drawn you in mercy. |
4 Again I will build you, and you shall be built, Oh virgin of Israēl: you shall again be adorned with your tabrets, and shall go forth in the dances of those who make merry.
4 For I will build you, and you shall be built, Oh virgin of Israēl: you shall yet take your timbrel, and go forth with the party of those who make merry. | 4 For I will build you, and you shall be built, Oh virgin of Israēl: you shall yet take your timbrel, and go forth with the party of those who make merry. |
5 You shall yet plant vines on the mountains of Samaria: the planters shall plant, and shall eat them as common things.
5 For you have planted vineyards on the mountains of Samaria: plant you, and praise. | 5 For you have planted vineyards on the mountains of Samaria: plant you, and praise. |
6 For there shall be a day, that the watchmen on the mount Ephraim shall cry, Arise you, and let’s go up to Zion to Yahweh our Elohim.
6 For it is a day when those who plead on the mountains of Ephraim shall call, saying, Arise you, and go up to Sion to the Lord your God. | 6 For it is a day when those who plead on the mountains of Ephraim shall call, saying, Arise you, and go up to Sion to the Lord your God. |
7 For thus says Yahweh; Sing with gladness for Jacōb, and shout among the chief of the nations: publish you, praise you, and say, Oh Yahweh, save your people, the remnant of Israēl.
7 For thus says the Lord to Jacōb; Rejoice you, and exult over the head of the nations: make proclamation, and praise you: say, The Lord has delivered his people, the remnant of Israēl. | 7 For thus says the Lord to Jacōb; Rejoice you, and exult over the head of the nations: make proclamation, and praise you: say, The Lord has delivered his people, the remnant of Israēl. |
8 Behold, I will bring them from the north country, and gather them from the coasts of the earth, and with them the blind and the lame, the woman with child and her that travails with child together: a great company shall return to that place.
8 Behold, I bring them from the north, and will gather them from the end of the earth to the feast of the Passover; and the people shall beget a great multitude, and they shall return here. | 8 Behold, I bring them from the north, and will gather them from the end of the earth to the feast of the Passover; and the people shall beget a great multitude, and they shall return here. |
9 They shall come with weeping, and with supplications will I lead them: I will cause them to walk by the rivers of waters in a straight way, in which they shall not stumble; for I am a father to Israēl, and Ephraim is my firstborn.
9 They went forth with weeping, and I will bring them back with consolation, causing them to lodge by the channels of waters in a straight way, and they shall not err in it; for I am become a father to Israēl, and Ephraim is my first-born. | 9 They went forth with weeping, and I will bring them back with consolation, causing them to lodge by the channels of waters in a straight way, and they shall not err in it; for I am become a father to Israēl, and Ephraim is my first-born. |
10 Hear the word of Yahweh, Oh you nations, and declare it in the isles afar off, and say, He who scattered Israēl will gather him, and keep him, as a shepherd does his flock.
10 Hear the words of the Lord, you nations, and proclaim them to the islands afar off; say, He who scattered Israēl will also gather him, and keep him as one that feeds his flock. | 10 Hear the words of the Lord, you nations, and proclaim them to the islands afar off; say, He who scattered Israēl will also gather him, and keep him as one that feeds his flock. |
11 For Yahweh has redeemed Jacōb, and ransomed him from the hand of him who was stronger than he.
11 For the Lord has ransomed Jacōb, he has rescued him out of the hand of those who were stronger than he. | 11 For the Lord has ransomed Jacōb, he has rescued him out of the hand of those who were stronger than he. |
12 Therefore they shall come and sing in the height of Zion, and shall flow together to the goodness of Yahweh, for wheat, and for wine, and for oil, and for the young of the flock and of the herd; and their soul shall be as a watered garden; and they shall not sorrow any more at all.

12 And they shall come, and shall rejoice in the mount of Sion, and shall come to the good things of the Lord, even to a land of corn, and wine, and fruits, and cattle, and sheep; and their soul shall be as a fruitful tree; and they shall hunger no more. | 12 And they shall come, and shall rejoice in the mount of Sion, and shall come to the good things of the Lord, even to a land of corn, and wine, and fruits, and cattle, and sheep; and their soul shall be as a fruitful tree; and they shall hunger no more. |
13 Then shall the virgin rejoice in the dance, both young men and old together; for I will turn their mourning into joy, and will comfort them, and make them rejoice from their sorrow.
13 Then shall the virgins rejoice in the assembly of youth, and the old men shall rejoice; and I will turn their mourning into joy, and will make them merry. | 13 Then shall the virgins rejoice in the assembly of youth, and the old men shall rejoice; and I will turn their mourning into joy, and will make them merry. |
14 And I will satiate the soul of the priests with fatness, and my people shall be satisfied with my goodness, says Yahweh.
14 I will expand and cheer with wine the soul of the priests the sons of Levi, and my people shall be satisfied with my good things: thus says the Lord. | 14 I will expand and cheer with wine the soul of the priests the sons of Levi, and my people shall be satisfied with my good things: thus says the Lord. |
15 Thus says Yahweh; A voice was heard in Ramah, lamentation, and bitter weeping; Rachel weeping for her children refused to be comforted for her children, because they were not.
15 A voice was heard in Rama, of lamentation, and of weeping, and wailing; Rachel would not cease weeping for her children, because they are not. | 15 A voice was heard in Rama, of lamentation, and of weeping, and wailing; Rachel would not cease weeping for her children, because they are not. |
16 Thus says Yahweh; Refrain your voice from weeping, and your eyes from tears; for your work shall be rewarded, says Yahweh; and they shall come again from the land of the enemy.
16 Thus says the Lord; Let your voice cease from weeping, and your eyes from your tears; for their is a reward for your works; and they shall return from the land of your enemies. | 16 Thus says the Lord; Let your voice cease from weeping, and your eyes from your tears; for their is a reward for your works; and they shall return from the land of your enemies. |
17 And there is hope in your end, says Yahweh, that your children shall come again to their own border.
17 There shall be an abiding home for your children. | 17 There shall be an abiding home for your children. |
18 I have surely heard Ephraim bemoaning himself thus; You have chastised me, and I was chastised, as a bullock unaccustomed to the yoke: turn me, and I shall be turned; for you are Yahweh my Elohim.
18 I have heard the sound of Ephraim lamenting, and saying, You have chastened me, and I was chastened; I as a calf wasn’t willingly taught: turn me, and I shall turn; for you are the Lord my God. | 18 I have heard the sound of Ephraim lamenting, and saying, You have chastened me, and I was chastened; I as a calf wasn’t willingly taught: turn me, and I shall turn; for you are the Lord my God. |
19 Surely after that I was turned, I repented; and after that I was instructed, I smote on my thigh: I was ashamed, yes, even confounded, because I did bear the reproach of my youth.
19 For after my captivity I repented; and after I knew, I groaned for the day of shame, and showed you who I received reproach from my youth. | 19 For after my captivity I repented; and after I knew, I groaned for the day of shame, and showed you who I received reproach from my youth. |
20 Is Ephraim my dear son? Is he a pleasant child? For since I spoke against him, I do earnestly remember him still; therefore my bowels are troubled for him; I will surely have mercy on him, says Yahweh.
20 Ephraim is a beloved son, a pleasing child to me; for because my words are in him, I will surely remember him; therefore I made haste to help him; I will surely have mercy on him, says the Lord. | 20 Ephraim is a beloved son, a pleasing child to me; for because my words are in him, I will surely remember him; therefore I made haste to help him; I will surely have mercy on him, says the Lord. |
21 Set you up waymarks, make you high heaps: set your heart toward the highway, even the way which you went: turn again, Oh virgin of Israēl, turn again to these your cities.
21 Prepare yourself, Oh Sion; execute vengeance; look to your ways: return, Oh virgin of Israēl, by the way by which you went, return mourning to your cities. | 21 Prepare yourself, Oh Sion; execute vengeance; look to your ways: return, Oh virgin of Israēl, by the way by which you went, return mourning to your cities. |
22 How long will you go about, Oh you backsliding daughter? For Yahweh has created a new thing in the earth, A woman shall surround a man.

22 How long, Oh disgraced daughter, will you turn away? For the Lord has created safety for a new plantation: men shall go about in safety. | 22 How long, Oh disgraced daughter, will you turn away? For the Lord has created safety for a new plantation: men shall go about in safety. |
23 Thus says Yahweh of armies, Elohim of Israēl; As yet they shall use this speech in the land of Judah and in the cities of it, when I shall bring again their captivity; Yahweh bless you, Oh habitation of justice, and mountain of holiness.
23 For thus says the Lord; They shall yet speak this word in the land of Juda, and in the cities of it, when I shall turn his captivity; blessed be the Lord on his righteous holy mountain! | 23 For thus says the Lord; They shall yet speak this word in the land of Juda, and in the cities of it, when I shall turn his captivity; blessed be the Lord on his righteous holy mountain! |
24 And there shall dwell in Judah itself, and in all the cities of it together, husbandmen, and they who go forth with flocks.
24 And there shall be dwellers in the cities of Juda, and in all his land, together with the farmer, and the shepherd shall go forth with the flock. | 24 And there shall be dwellers in the cities of Juda, and in all his land, together with the farmer, and the shepherd shall go forth with the flock. |
25 For I have satiated the weary soul, and I have replenished every sorrowful soul.
25 For I have saturated every thirsting soul, and filled every hungry soul. | 25 For I have saturated every thirsting soul, and filled every hungry soul. |
26 Upon this I awaked, and beheld; and my sleep was sweet to me.
26 Therefore I awake, and beheld; and my sleep was sweet to me. | 26 Therefore I awake, and beheld; and my sleep was sweet to me. |
27 Behold, the days come, says Yahweh, that I will sow the house of Israēl and the house of Judah with the seed of man, and with the seed of beast.
27 Therefore, behold, the days come, says the Lord, when I will sow the house of Israēl and the house of Juda with the seed of man, and the seed of beast. | 27 Therefore, behold, the days come, says the Lord, when I will sow the house of Israēl and the house of Juda with the seed of man, and the seed of beast. |
28 And it will happen, that like as I have watched over them, to pluck up, and to break down, and to throw down, and to destroy, and to afflict; so will I watch over them, to build, and to plant, says Yahweh.
28 And it will happen, that as I watched over them, to pull down, and to afflict, so will I watch over them, to build, and to plant, says the Lord. | 28 And it will happen, that as I watched over them, to pull down, and to afflict, so will I watch over them, to build, and to plant, says the Lord. |
29 In those days they shall say no more, The fathers have eaten a sour grape, and the children’s teeth are set on edge.
29 In those days they shall certainly not say, The fathers ate a sour grape, and the children’s teeth were set on edge. | 29 In those days they shall certainly not say, The fathers ate a sour grape, and the children’s teeth were set on edge. |
30 But everyone shall die for his own iniquity: every man who eats the sour grape, his teeth shall be set on edge.
30 But everyone shall die in his own sin; and the teeth of him who eats the sour grape shall be set on edge. | 30 But everyone shall die in his own sin; and the teeth of him who eats the sour grape shall be set on edge. |
31 Behold, the days come, says Yahweh, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israēl, and with the house of Judah.
31 Behold, the days come, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israēl, and with the house of Juda. | 31 Behold, the days come, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israēl, and with the house of Juda. |
32 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they broke, although I was a husband to them, says Yahweh.
32 not according to the covenant which I made with their fathers in the day when I took hold of their hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; for they abode not in my covenant, and I disregarded them, says the Lord. | 32 not according to the covenant which I made with their fathers in the day when I took hold of their hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; for they abode not in my covenant, and I disregarded them, says the Lord. |
33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israēl; After those days, says Yahweh, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.
33 For this is my covenant which I will make with the house of Israēl; after those days, says the Lord, I will surely put my laws into their mind, and write them on their hearts; and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people. | 33 For this is my covenant which I will make with the house of Israēl; after those days, says the Lord, I will surely put my laws into their mind, and write them on their hearts; and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people. |
34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know Yahweh; for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the great of them, says Yahweh; for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.
34 And they shall not at all teach everyone his fellow citizen, and everyone his brother, saying, Know the Lord; for all shall know me, from the least of them to the greatest of them; for I will be merciful to their iniquities, and their sins I will remember no more. | 34 And they shall not at all teach everyone his fellow citizen, and everyone his brother, saying, Know the Lord; for all shall know me, from the least of them to the greatest of them; for I will be merciful to their iniquities, and their sins I will remember no more. |
35 Thus says Yahweh, which gives the sun for a light by day, and the ordinances of the moon and of the stars for a light by night, which divides the sea when the waves of it roar; Yahweh of armies is his name.
35 Thus says the Lord, who gives the sun for a light by day, the moon and the stars for a light by night, and makes a roaring in the sea, so that the waves of it roar; the Lord Almighty is his name. | 35 Thus says the Lord, who gives the sun for a light by day, the moon and the stars for a light by night, and makes a roaring in the sea, so that the waves of it roar; the Lord Almighty is his name. |
36 If those ordinances depart from before me, says Yahweh, then the seed of Israēl also shall cease from being a nation before me forever.
36 if these ordinances cease from before me, says the Lord, then shall the family of Israēl cease to be a nation before me forever. | 36 if these ordinances cease from before me, says the Lord, then shall the family of Israēl cease to be a nation before me forever. |
37 Thus says Yahweh; If heaven above can be measured, and the foundations of the earth searched out beneath, I will also cast off all the seed of Israēl for all that they have done, says Yahweh.
37 Though the sky should be raised to a greater height, says the Lord, and though the ground of the earth should be sunk lower beneath, yet I won’t cast off the family of Israēl, says the Lord, for all that they have done. | 37 Though the sky should be raised to a greater height, says the Lord, and though the ground of the earth should be sunk lower beneath, yet I won’t cast off the family of Israēl, says the Lord, for all that they have done. |
38 Behold, the days come, says Yahweh, that the city shall be built to Yahweh from the tower of Hananeel to the gate of the corner.
38 Behold, the days come, says the Lord, when the city shall be built to the Lord from the tower of Anameel to the gate of the corner. | 38 Behold, the days come, says the Lord, when the city shall be built to the Lord from the tower of Anameel to the gate of the corner. |
39 And the measuring line shall yet go forth over against it on the hill Gareb, and shall surround about to Goath.
39 And the measurement of it shall proceed in front of them as far as the hills of Gareb, and it shall be surrounded with a circular wall of choice stones. | 39 And the measurement of it shall proceed in front of them as far as the hills of Gareb, and it shall be surrounded with a circular wall of choice stones. |
40 And the whole valley of the dead bodies, and of the ashes, and all the fields to the brook of Kidron, to the corner of the horse gate toward the east, shall be holy to Yahweh; it shall not be plucked up, nor thrown down any more forever.
40 And all the Asaremoth even to Nachal Kedron, as far as the corner of the horse-gate eastward, shall be holiness to the Lord; and it shall not fail any more, and shall not be destroyed forever. | 40 And all the Asaremoth even to Nachal Kedron, as far as the corner of the horse-gate eastward, shall be holiness to the Lord; and it shall not fail any more, and shall not be destroyed forever. |
