Psalm 18
(LXX 17)

AlexandrinusVaticanus

To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David, the servant of Yahweh, who spoke to Yahweh the words of this song in the day that Yahweh delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul; And he said,

For the end, by David, the servant of the Lord; what he spoke to the Lord, even the words of this song, on the day in which the Lord delivered him out the hand of all his enemies, and out the hand of Saul; and he said, For the end, by David, the servant of the Lord; what he spoke to the Lord, even the words of this song, on the day in which the Lord delivered him out the hand of all his enemies, and out the hand of Saul;

1 I will love you, Oh Lord, my strength.

1 I will love you, Oh Lord, my strength. 1 and said. I will love you, Oh Lord, my strength.

2 Yahweh is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.

2 The Lord is my firmness, and my refuge, and my deliverer; my God is my helper, [and] I will have confident assurance in him; he is my protector, and the horn of my salvation, and my helper. 2 The Lord is my firmness, and my refuge, and my deliverer; my God is my helper, I will have confident assurance in him; he is my protector, and the horn of my salvation, and my helper.

3 I will call on Yahweh, who is worthy to be praised; so shall I be saved from my enemies.

3 While praising, I will call on the Lord, and I shall be saved from my enemies. 3 While praising, I will call on the Lord, and I shall be saved from my enemies.

4 The sorrows of death surrounded me, and the floods of ungodly men made me afraid.

4 The pangs of death surrounded me, and the cascade of lawlessness troubled me. 4 The pangs of death surrounded me, and the cascade of lawlessness troubled me.

5 The sorrows of hell surrounded me about; the snares of death went before me.

5 The pangs of Hades encircled me; the snares of death outran me. 5 The pangs of Hades encircled me; the snares of death outran me.

6 In my distress I called on Yahweh, and cried to my God; he heard my voice out of his temple, and my cry came before him, even into his ears.

6 And when I am being afflicted, I called on the Lord, and cried to my God; from out of his holy temple, he heard my voice, and my cry before him will enter into his ears. 6 And when I am being afflicted, I called on the Lord, and cried to my God; from out of his holy temple, he heard my voice, and my cry before him will enter into his ears.

7 Then the earth shook and trembled; the foundations also of the hills moved and were shaken, because he was wroth.

7 And the earth shook and quaked, and the foundations of the mountains were disturbed, and were shaken, because God was angry with them. 7 And the earth shook and quaked, and the foundations of the mountains were disturbed, and were shaken, because God was angry with them.

8 There went up a smoke out of his nostrils, and fire out of his mouth devoured; coals were kindled by it.

8 Smoke went up in his wrath, and fire burst into flame at his presence; coals were ignited by him. 8 Smoke went up in his wrath, and fire burst into flame at his presence; coals were ignited by him.

9 He bowed the heavens also, and came down; and darkness was under his feet.

9 And he bent the sky and came down; and thick darkness was under his feet. 9 And he bent the sky and came down; and thick darkness was under his feet.

10 And he rode on a cherub, and flew; yes, he flew on the wings of the wind.

10 And he mounted on cherubs and flew; he flew on the wings of winds. 10 And he mounted on cherubs and flew; he flew on the wings of winds.

11 He made darkness his secret place; his pavilion all around him were dark waters and thick clouds of the skies.

11 And he made darkness his hideout; his tent is around him, dark water in clouds of air. 11 And he made darkness his hideout; his tent is around him, dark water in clouds of air.

12 At the brightness that was before him his thick clouds passed, hail stones and coals of fire.

12 From the brightness before him, the clouds passed, hail and coals of fire. 12 From the brightness before him, the clouds passed, hail and coals of fire.

13 Yahweh also thundered in the heavens, and the Highest gave his voice; hail stones and coals of fire.

13 And the Lord thundered out of the sky, and the highest gave his voice. 13 And the Lord thundered out of the sky, and the highest gave his voice.

14 Yes, he sent out his arrows, and scattered them; and he shot out lightnings, and defeated them.

14 And he sent out arrows, and scattered them; and multiplied lightnings, and confounded them. 14 And he sent out arrows, and scattered them; and multiplied lightnings, and confounded them.

15 Then the channels of waters were seen, and the foundations of the world were discovered at your rebuke, Oh Yahweh, at the blast of the breath of your nostrils.

15 And the springs of the waters appeared, and the foundations of the world were uncovered, at your rebuke, Oh Lord, at the blast of the breath of your wrath. 15 And the springs of the waters appeared, and the foundations of the world were uncovered, at your rebuke, Oh Lord, at the blast of the breath of your wrath.

16 He sent from above, he took me, he drew me out of many waters.

16 He sent from on high and took me, he received me out of many waters. 16 He sent from on high and took me, he received me out of many waters.

17 He delivered me from my strong enemy, and from them which hated me; for they were too strong for me.

17 He will deliver me from my mighty enemies, and from those who hate me; because they were more powerful than I. 17 He will deliver me from my mighty enemies, and from those who hate me; because they were more powerful than I.

18 They came before me in the day of my calamity; but Yahweh was my support.

18 In the day of my affliction, they outran me; but the Lord became my support. 18 In the day of my affliction, they outran me; but the Lord became my support.

19 He brought me forth also into a large place; he delivered me, because he delighted in me.

19 And he brought me out into a broad place; he will rescue me, because he wants me. [He rescuses me from my strong enemies and from those who hate me.] 19 And he brought me out into a broad place; he will rescue me, because he wants me.

20 Yahweh rewarded me according to my righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands has he recompensed me.

20 And the Lord will repay me according to my righteousness; and will repay me according to the purity of my hands. 20 And the Lord will repay me according to my righteousness; and will repay me according to the purity of my hands.

21 For I have kept the ways of Yahweh, and haven’t wickedly departed from my God.

21 For I have kept the way of the Lord and didn’t impiously depart from my God. 21 For I have kept the way of the Lord and didn’t impiously depart from my God.

22 For all his judgments were before me, and I didn’t put away his statutes from me.

22 Because all his judgments were before me, and I didn’t keep his regulations away from me. 22 Because all his judgments were before me, and I didn’t keep his regulations away from me.

23 I was also upright before him, and I kept myself from my iniquity.

23 And I shall be blameless with him, and shall keep myself from my lawlessness. 23 And I shall be blameless with him, and shall keep myself from my lawlessness.

24 Therefore has Yahweh recompensed me according to my righteousness, according to the cleanness of my hands in his eyesight.

24 And the Lord shall repay me according to my righteousness, and according to the purity of my hands before his eyes. 24 And the Lord shall repay me according to my righteousness, and according to the purity of my hands before his eyes.

25 With the merciful you will show yourself merciful; with an upright man you will show yourself upright;

25 With the devout you will be regarded devout; and with the innocent man you will be innocent. 25 With the devout you will be regarded devout; and with the innocent man you will be innocent.

26 With the pure you will show yourself pure; and with the froward you will show yourself froward.

26 And with the chosen you will be chosen; and with the crooked you will divert. 26 And with the chosen you will be chosen; and with the crooked you will divert.

27 For you will save the afflicted people; but will bring down high looks.

27 Because you will save the humble people, and will humble the eyes of the arrogant. 27 Because you will save the humble people, and will humble the eyes of the arrogant.

28 For you will light my candle; Yahweh my Elohim will enlighten my darkness.

28 Because you, Oh Lord, will light my lamp; my God, you will enlighten my darkness. 28 Because you, Oh Lord, will light my lamp; my God, you will enlighten my darkness.

29 For by you I have run through a troop; and by my God have I leaped over a wall.

29 Because by you I shall be delivered from a pirate; and by my God I will step over a wall. 29 Because by you I shall be delivered from a pirate; and by my God I will step over a wall.

30 As for God, his way is perfect; the word of Yahweh is tried; he is a buckler to all those who trust in him.

30 My God, his way is blameless; the sayings of the Lord are fire-tested; he is a protector of all those who have confident assurance in him. 30 My God, his way is blameless; the sayings of the Lord are fire-tested; he is a protector of all those who have confident assurance in him.

31 For who is God except Yahweh? Or who is a rock except our God?

31 ὅτι τίς θεὸς πλὴν τοῦ κυρίου;
καὶ τίς θεὸς πλὴν τοῦ θεοῦ ἡμῶν;
31 ὅτι τίς Θεὸς πλὴν τοῦ Κυρίου, καὶ τίς Θεὸς πλὴν τοῦ Θεοῦ ἡμῶν;
31 For who is God but the Lord? And who is God but our God? 31 For who is God but the Lord? And who is God but our God?

32 It is God who girds me with strength, and makes my way perfect.

32 It is God who girds me with strength, and made my way blameless; 32 It is God who secures me with strength, and made my way blameless;

33 He makes my feet like hinds’ feet, and sets me on my high places.

33 he is the one who restores my feet like a deer’s, and is setting me on high places. 33 he is the one who restores my feet like a deer’s, and is setting me on high places.

34 He teaches my hands to war, so that a bow of steel is broken by my arms.

34 He is teaching my hands for war; and you have made my arms a copper-alloy bow. 34 He is teaching my hands for war; and you have made my arms a copper-alloy bow.

35 You have also given me the shield of your salvation; and your right hand has held me up, and your gentleness has made me great.

35 And you gave me protection in my salvation; and your right hand supported me, and your discipline corrected me to the end; and your discipline it will teach me. 35 And you gave me protection in my salvation; and your right hand supported me, and your discipline corrected me to the end; and your discipline it will teach me.

36 You have enlarged my steps under me, that my feet didn’t slip.

36 You widened my steps under me, and my footsteps didn’t weaken. 36 You widened my steps under me, and my footsteps didn’t weaken.

37 I have pursued my enemies, and overtaken them; neither did I turn again until they were consumed.

37 I will pursue my enemies, and overtake them; and I won’t turn back until they fail. 37 I will pursue my enemies, and overtake them; and I won’t turn back until they fail.

38 I have wounded those who were not able to rise; they are fallen under my feet.

38 I will afflict them and they will never be able to stand; they shall fall under my feet. 38 I will afflict them and they will never be able to stand; they shall fall under my feet.

39 For you have girded me with strength to the battle; you have subdued under me those who rose up against me.

39 For you girded me with strength for battle; you hog-tied all those who rose up against me under me. 39 For you girded me with strength for battle; you hog-tied all those who rose up against me under me.

40 You have also given me the necks of my enemies; that I might destroy those who hate me.

40 And my my enemies—you gave me their back; and you destroyed those who hated me. 40 And my my enemies—you gave me their back; and you destroyed those who hated me.

41 They cried, but there was none to save them; even to Yahweh, but he didn’t answer them.

41 They cried, but there was no one saving; to the Lord, but he didn’t listen to them. 41 They cried, but there was no one saving; to the Lord, but he didn’t listen to them.

42 Then I beat them small as the dust before the wind; I cast them out as the dirt in the streets.

42 I will grind them like dust before the wind; I will crush them like mud of the street. 42 I will grind them like dust before the wind; I will crush them like mud of the street.

43 You have delivered me from the strivings of the people; and you have made me the head of the heathen; a people whom I haven’t known shall serve me.

43 You will rescue me from arguments of the people; you will appoint me as head of the nations; a people whom I didn’t know was subject to me. 43 You will rescue me from arguments of the people; you will appoint me as head of the nations; a people whom I didn’t know was subject to me.

44 As soon as they hear of me, they shall obey me; the strangers shall submit themselves to me.

44 at the hearing of the ear they obeyed me; the sons of foreigners lied to me. 44 at the hearing of the ear they obeyed me; the sons of foreigners lied to me.

45 The strangers shall fade away, and be afraid out of their close places.

45 The sons of foreigners grew old, and limped from their paths. 45 The sons of foreigners grew old, and limped from their paths.

46 Yahweh lives; and blessed be my rock; and let my saving God be exalted.

46 The Lord lives; and blessed be my God; and let my saving God be exalted. 46 The Lord lives; and blessed be my God; and let my saving God be exalted.

47 It is God who avenges me, and subdues the people under me.

47 God is the one who gives vengeance to me and subdues peoples under me, 47 God is the one who gives vengeance to me and subdues peoples under me,

48 He delivers me from my enemies; yes, you lift me up above those who rise up against me; you have delivered me from the violent man.
