| 1 ὅτε δὲ συνετέλεσαν δειπνοῦντες, εἰσήγαγον Τωβίαν πρὸς αὐτήν. | 1 καὶ ὅτε συνετέλεσαν τὸ φαγεῖν καὶ πιεῖν ἠθέλησαν κοιμηθῆναι καὶ ἀπήγαγον τὸν νεανίσκον καὶ εἰσήγαγον αὐτὸν εἰς τὸ ταμίειον |
| 1 And when they had supped, they brought Tōbias in unto her. | When they had finished eating and drinking, they wanted to go to sleep; so they led the young man out and led him into the bedroom. |
| 2 ὁ δὲ πορευόμενος ἐμνήσθη τῶν λόγων Ῥαφαὴλ καὶ ἔλαβεν τὴν τέφραν τῶν θυμιαμάτων καὶ ἐπέθηκεν τὴν καρδίαν τοῦ ἰχθύος καὶ τὸ ἧπαρ καὶ ἐκάπνισεν. | 2 καὶ ἐμνήσθη Τωβίας τῶν λόγων Ῥαφαὴλ καὶ ἔλαβεν τὸ ἧπαρ τοῦ ἰχθύος καὶ τὴν καρδίαν ἐκ τοῦ βαλλαντίου οὗ εἶχεν καὶ ἐπέθηκεν ἐπὶ τὴν τέφραν τοῦ θυμιάματος |
| 2 And as he went, he remembered the words of Raphaēl, and took the ashes of the perfumes, and put the heart and the liver of the fish thereupon, and made a smoke therewith. | Then Tōbias remembered the words of Raphaēl, and he took the fish’s liver and heart out of the bag where he had them and put them on the embers of the incense. |
| 3 ὅτε δὲ ὠσφράνθη τὸ δαιμόνιον τῆς ὀσμῆς, ἔφυγεν εἰς τὰ ἀνώτατα Αἰγύπτου, καὶ ἔδησεν αὐτὸ ὁ ἄγγελος. | 3 καὶ ἡ ὀσμὴ τοῦ ἰχθύος ἐκώλυσεν καὶ ἀπέδραμεν τὸ δαιμόνιον ἄνω εἰς τὰ μέρη Αἰγύπτου καὶ βαδίσας Ῥαφαὴλ συνεπόδισεν αὐτὸν ἐκεῖ καὶ ἐπέδησεν παραχρῆμα |
| 3 The which smell when the evil spirit had smelled, he fled into the utmost parts of Egypt, and the angel bound him. | And the odour of the fish became a hindrance, and the demon fled into the upper parts of Egypt. But Raphaēl went and bound him there hand and foot and tied him up at once. |
| 4 ὡς δὲ συνεκλείσθησαν ἀμφότεροι, ἀνέστη Τωβίας ἀπὸ τῆς κλίνης καὶ εἶπεν ἀνάστηθι, ἀδελφή, καὶ προσευξώμεθα, ἵνα ἡμᾶς ἐλεήσῃ ὁ κύριος. | 4 καὶ ἐξῆλθον καὶ ἀπέκλεισαν τὴν θύραν τοῦ ταμιείου καὶ ἠγέρθη Τωβίας ἀπὸ τῆς κλίνης καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῇ ἀδελφή ἀνάστηθι προσευξώμεθα καὶ δεηθῶμεν τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν ὅπως ποιήσῃ ἐφ᾿ ἡμᾶς ἔλεος καὶ σωτηρίαν |
| 4 And after that they were both shut in together, Tōbias rose out of the bed, and said, Sister, arise, and let us pray that God would have pity on us. | Then they went out and shut the door of the room. And Tōbias got up from the bed and said to her, “Sister, get up, let us pray and implore our Lord that he grant us mercy and safety.” |
| 5 καὶ ἤρξατο Τωβίας λέγειν εὐλογητὸς εἶ, ὁ θεὸς τῶν πατέρων ἡμῶν, καὶ εὐλογητὸν τὸ ὄνομά σου τὸ ἅγιον καὶ ἔνδοξον εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας· εὐλογησάτωσάν σὲ οἱ οὐρανοὶ καὶ πᾶσαι αἱ κτίσεις σου. | 5 καὶ ἀνέστη καὶ ἤρξαντο προσεύχεσθαι καὶ δεηθῆναι ὅπως γένηται αὐτοῖς σωτηρίᾳ καὶ ἤρξατο λέγειν εὐλογητὸς εἶ ὁ θεὸς τῶν πατέρων ἡμῶν καὶ εὐλογητὸν τὸ ὄνομά σου εἰς πάντας τοὺς αἰῶνας τῆς γενεᾶς εὐλογησάτωσάν σὲ οἱ οὐρανοὶ καὶ πᾶσα ἡ κτίσις σου εἰς πάντας τοὺς αἰῶνας |
| 5 Then began Tōbias to say, Blessed art you, O God of our fathers, and blessed is your holy and glorious name for ever; let the heavens bless you, and all your creatures. | So she got up, and they began to pray and implore that safety may be theirs. And he began to say, “Blessed are you, O God of our ancestors, and blessed be your name for all the ages forever. Let the heavens and all your creation bless you for all the ages. |
| 6 σὺ ἐποίησας Ἀδὰμ καὶ ἔδωκας αὐτῷ βοηθὸν Εὔαν στήριγμα τὴν γυναῖκα αὐτοῦ· ἐκ τούτων ἐγενήθη τὸ ἀνθρώπων σπέρμα. σὺ εἶπας οὐ καλὸν εἶναι τὸν ἄνθρωπον μόνον, ποιήσωμεν αὐτῷ βοηθὸν ὅμοιον αὐτῷ. | 6 σὺ ἐποίησας τὸν Ἀδὰμ καὶ ἐποίησας αὐτῷ βοηθὸν στήριγμα Εὔαν τὴν γυναῖκα αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐξ ἀμφοτέρων ἐγενήθη τὸ σπέρμα τῶν ἀνθρώπων καὶ σὺ εἶπας ὅτι οὐ καλὸν εἶναι τὸν ἄνθρωπον μόνον ποιήσωμεν αὐτῷ βοηθὸν ὅμοιον αὐτῷ |
| 6 Thou madest Adam, and gavest him Eve his wife for an helper and stay: of them came mankind: you have said, It is not good that man should be alone; let us make unto him an aid like unto himself. | You made Adam, and you made for him a helper, a support—his wife Heua. And from the two of them the human race has come. And you said, ‘It is not good for the man to be alone; let us make for him a helper like himself.’ |
| 7 καὶ νῦν, κύριε, οὐ διὰ πορνείαν ἐγὼ λαμβάνω τὴν ἀδελφήν μου ταύτην, ἀλλ᾿ ἐπ᾿ ἀληθείας· ἐπίταξον ἐλεῆσαί με καὶ ταύτῃ συγκαταγηρᾶσαι. | 7 καὶ νῦν οὐχὶ διὰ πορνείαν ἐγὼ λαμβάνω τὴν ἀδελφήν μου ταύτην ἀλλ᾿ ἐπ᾿ ἀληθείας ἐπίταξον ἐλεῆσαί με καὶ αὐτὴν καὶ συγκαταγηρᾶσαι κοινῶς |
| 7 And now, O Lord, I take not this my sister for lush but uprightly: therefore mercifully ordain that we may become aged together. | And now not because of lust am I taking this kinswoman of mine, but with sincerity. Grant that I and she may have mercy and that we may grow old together.” |
| 8 καὶ εἶπεν μετ᾿ αὐτοῦ ἀμήν. | 8 καὶ εἶπαν μεθ᾿ ἑαυτῶν ἀμήν ἀμήν |
| 8 And she said with him, Amen. | And they said with each other, “Amen, Amen.” |
| 9 καὶ ἐκοιμήθησαν ἀμφότεροι τὴν νύκτα. | 9 καὶ ἐκοιμήθησαν τὴν νύκτα |
| 9 So they slept both that night. | Then they went to sleep for the night. |
| 10 καὶ ἀναστὰς Ῥαγουὴλ ἐπορεύθη καὶ ὤρυξεν τάφον λέγων μὴ καὶ οὗτος ἀποθάνῃ. | 10 καὶ ἀναστὰς Ῥαγουὴλ ἐκάλεσεν τοὺς οἰκέτας μεθ᾿ ἑαυτοῦ καὶ ᾤχοντο καὶ ὤρυξαν τάφον εἶπεν γάρ μήποτε ἀποθάνῃ καὶ γενώμεθα κατάγελως καὶ ὀνειδισμός |
| 10 And Ragouēl arose, and went and made a grave, Saying, I fear lest he also be dead. | But Ragouēl got up and called his servants to him, and they went and dug a grave, for he said, “Perhaps he may die, and we may become an object of ridicule and derision.” |
| 11 καὶ ἦλθεν Ῥαγουὴλ εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν ἑαυτοῦ | 11 καὶ ὅτε συνετέλεσαν ὀρύσσοντες τὸν τάφον ἦλθεν Ῥαγουὴλ εἰς τὸν οἶκον καὶ ἐκάλεσεν τὴν γυναῖκα αὐτοῦ |
| 11 But when Ragouēl was come into his house, | And when they had finished digging the grave, Ragouēl went into the house and called his wife, |
| 12 καὶ εἶπεν Ἐδνὰ τῇ γυναικὶ αὐτοῦ ἀπόστειλον μίαν τῶν παιδισκῶν, καὶ ἰδέτωσαν εἰ ζῇ· εἰ δὲ μή, ἵνα θάψωμεν αὐτὸν καὶ μηδεὶς γνῷ. | 12 καὶ εἶπεν ἀπόστειλον μίαν τῶν παιδισκῶν καὶ εἰσελθοῦσα ἰδέτω εἰ ζῇ καὶ εἰ τέθνηκεν ὅπως ἄν θάψωμεν αὐτόν ὅπως μηδεὶς γνῷ |
| 12 He said unto his wife Edna. Send one of the maids, and let her see whether he be alive: if he be not, that we may bury him, and no man know it. | and he said, “Send one of the maids, and have her go in to see if he is alive. But if he is dead, let us bury him so that no one may know.” |
| 13 καὶ εἰσῆλθεν ἡ παιδίσκη ἀνοίξασα τὴν θύραν καὶ εὗρεν τοὺς δύο καθεύδοντας. | 13 καὶ ἀπέστειλαν τὴν παιδίσκην καὶ ἧψαν τὸν λύχνον καὶ ἤνοιξαν τὴν θύραν καὶ εἰσῆλθεν καὶ εὗρεν αὐτοὺς καθεύδοντας καὶ ὑπνοῦντας κοινῶς |
| 13 So the maid opened the door, and went in, and found them both asleep, | So they sent the maid and lit the lamp and opened the door, and she went in and found them lying there fast asleep together. |
| 14 καὶ ἐξελθοῦσα ἀπήγγειλεν αὐτοῖς ὅτι ζῇ. | 14 καὶ ἐξελθοῦσα ἡ παιδίσκη ὑπέδειξεν αὐτοῖς ὅτι ζῇ καὶ οὐδὲν κακόν ἐστιν |
| 14 And came forth, and told them that he was alive. | And the maid went out and told them that he was alive and that nothing was wrong. |
| 15 καὶ εὐλόγησεν Ῥαγουὴλ τὸν θεὸν λέγων εὐλογητὸς εἶ σύ, ὁ θεός, ἐν πάσῃ εὐλογίᾳ καθαρᾷ καὶ ἁγίᾳ, καὶ εὐλογείτωσάν σὲ οἱ ἅγιοί σου καὶ πᾶσαι αἱ κτίσεις σου, καὶ πάντες οἱ ἄγγελοί σου καὶ οἱ ἐκλεκτοί σου εὐλογείτωσάν σὲ εἰς πάντας τοὺς αἰῶνας. | 15 καὶ εὐλόγησαν τὸν θεὸν τοῦ οὐρανοῦ καὶ εἶπαν εὐλογητὸς εἶ θεέ ἐν πάσῃ εὐλογίᾳ καθαρᾷ εὐλογείτωσάν σὲ εἰς πάντας τοὺς αἰῶνας |
| 15 Then Ragouēl praised God, and said, O God, you art worthy to be praised with all pure and holy praise; therefore let your saints praise you with all your creatures; and let all your angels and your elect praise you for ever. | So they blessed the God of heaven, and they said, “Blessed are you, O God, with every pure blessing, and may they bless you forever and ever. |
| 16 εὐλογητὸς εἶ ὅτι ηὔφρανάς με, καὶ οὐκ ἐγένετό μοι καθὼς ὑπενόουν, ἀλλὰ κατὰ τὸ πολὺ ἔλεός σου ἐποίησας μεθ᾿ ἡμῶν. | 16 καὶ εὐλογητὸς εἶ ὅτι εὔφρανάς με καὶ οὐκ ἐγένετο καθὼς ὑπενόουν ἀλλὰ κατὰ τὸ πολὺ ἔλεός σου ἐποίησας μεθ᾿ ἡμῶν |
| 16 Thou art to be praised, for you have made me joyful; and that is not come to me which I suspected; but you have dealt with us according to your great mercy. | And blessed are you because you have made me glad, and it did not turn out as I expected, but according to your great mercy you have dealt with us. |
| 17 εὐλογητὸς εἶ ὅτι ἠλέησας δύο μονογενεῖς· ποίησον αὐτοῖς, δέσποτα, ἔλεος, συντέλεσον τὴν ζωὴν αὐτῶν ἐν ὑγιείᾳ μετὰ εὐφροσύνης καὶ ἐλέους. | 17 καὶ εὐλογητὸς εἶ ὅτι ἠλέησας δύο μονογενεῖς ποίησον αὐτοῖς δέσποτα ἔλεος καὶ σωτηρίαν καὶ συντέλεσον τὴν ζωὴν αὐτῶν μετ᾿ εὐφροσύνης καὶ ἐλέου |
| 17 Thou art to be praised because you have had mercy of two that were the only begotten children of their fathers: grant them mercy, O Lord, and finish their life in health with joy and mercy. | And blessed are you because you had mercy on two only children. Have mercy on them, O Master, and keep them safe, and bring their life to fulfillment with gladness and mercy.” |
| 18 ἐκέλευσεν δὲ τοῖς οἰκέταις χῶσαι τὸν τάφον. | 18 τότε εἶπεν τοῖς οἰκέταις αὐτοῦ χῶσαι τὸν τάφον πρὸ τοῦ ὄρθρον γενέσθαι |
| 18 Then Ragouēl bade his servants to fill the grave. | Then he told his domestics to fill in the grave before it became dawn. |
| 19 καὶ ἐποίησεν αὐτοῖς γάμον ἡμερῶν δέκα τεσσάρων. | 19 καὶ τῇ γυναικὶ εἶπεν ποιῆσαι ἄρτους πολλούς καὶ εἰς τὸ βουκόλιον βαδίσας ἤγαγεν βόας δύο καὶ κριοὺς τέσσαρας καὶ εἶπεν συντελεῖν αὐτούς καὶ ἤρξαντο παρασκευάζειν |
| 19 And he kept the wedding feast fourteen days. | And he told his wife to make many loaves of bread, and he went out to the herd and brought two steers and four rams and commanded that they be killed. So they began to make preparations. |
| 20 καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ῥαγουὴλ πρὶν ἢ συντελεσθῆναι τὰς ἡμέρας τοῦ γάμου ἐνόρκως μὴ ἐξελθεῖν αὐτόν, ἐὰν μὴ πληρωθῶσιν αἱ δέκα τέσσαρες ἡμέραι τοῦ γάμου, | 20 καὶ ἐκάλεσεν Τωβίαν καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ δέκα τεσσάρων ἡμερῶν οὐ μὴ κινηθῇς ἐντεῦθεν ἀλλ᾿ αὐτοῦ μενεῖς ἔσθων καὶ πίνων παρ᾿ ἐμοὶ καὶ εὐφρανεῖς τὴν ψυχὴν τῆς θυγατρός μου τὴν κατωδυνωμένην |
| 20 For before the days of the marriage were finished, Ragouēl had said unto him by an oath, that he should not depart till the fourteen days of the marriage were expired; | Then he called Tōbias and aswore an oath to him and saida: “For fourteen days you shall not move from here but shall stay here eating and drinking with me, and you shall make my daughter’s spirit glad which has been depressed. |
| 21 καὶ τότε λαβόντα τὸ ἥμισυ τῶν ὑπαρχόντων αὐτοῦ πορεύεσθαι μετὰ ὑγιείας πρὸς τὸν πατέρα· καὶ τὰ λοιπά, ὅταν ἀποθάνω καὶ ἡ γυνή μου. | 21 καὶ ὅσα μοι ὑπάρχει λάμβανε αὐτόθεν τὸ ἥμισυ καὶ ὕπαγε ὑγιαίνων πρὸς τὸν πατέρα σου καὶ τὸ ἄλλο ἥμισυ ὅταν ἀποθάνω ἐγώ τε καὶ ἡ γυνή μου ὑμέτερόν ἐστιν θάρσει παιδίον ἐγώ σου ὁ πατὴρ καὶ Ἐδνὰ ἡ μήτηρ σου καὶ παρὰ σοῦ ἐσμεν ἡμεῖς καὶ τῆς ἀδελφῆς σου ἀπὸ τοῦ νῦν εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα θάρσει παιδίον |
| 21 And then he should take the half of his goods, and go in safety to his father; and should have the rest when I and my wife be dead. | Then take at once half of what I own and return in good health to your father, and the other half will be yours when I die, and my wife as well. Take courage, my child. I am your father, and Edna is your mother, and we belong to you and to your kinswoman now and forever. Take courage, my child.” |
