for forty days, being tempted by the devil. And he ate nothing during those days, and when they had ended, he became hungry. | for forty days, being tempted by the devil. And he ate nothing during those days, and when they had ended, afterward he became hungry. |
And the devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.” | And the devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.” |
And Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.’”[1] | And Jesus answered him, saying, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but by every word of God.’”[1] |
And after leading him up, he showed him all the kingdoms of the inhabited world in a moment of time. | And after leading him up a high mountain, the devil showed him all the kingdoms of the inhabited world in a moment of time. |
And the devil said to him, “I will give you all this authority and the glory of them; for it has been handed over to me, and I give it to whomever I want. | And the devil said to him, “I will give you all this authority and the glory of them; for it has been handed over to me, and I give it to whomever I want. |
Therefore if you worship before me, it shall all be yours.” | Therefore if you worship before me, it shall all be yours.” |
And in response to him, Jesus said, “It is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’”[2] | And in response to him, Jesus said, “Get behind me Satan; for it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’”[2] |
And he led him to Jerusalem and had placed him on the upper wing of the temple, and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here; | And he led him to Jerusalem and had placed him on the upper wing of the temple, and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here; |
for it is written, ‘He will command his angels concerning you to guard you,’[3] | for it is written, ‘He will command his angels concerning you to guard you,’[3] |
and, ‘On their hands they will carry you, So that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’”[4] |
and, ‘On their hands they will carry you, So that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’”[4] |
And in response to him, Jesus said, “It is said, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’”[5] | And in response to him, Jesus said, “It is said, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’”[5] |
And after finishing every temptation, the devil left him until an opportune time. | And after finishing every temptation, the devil left him until an opportune time. |
