Calling the First Disciples
(Matt 4:18-22; Mark 1:16-20)
Now it happened that while the crowd was pressing around him and listening to the word of God, he was standing by the lake of Gennēsaret; | Now it happened that while the crowd was pressing around him and listening to the word of God, he was standing by the lake of Gennēsaret; |
and he saw two boats lying at the edge of the lake; but the fishermen had gotten out of them and were washing their nets. | and he saw two boats lying at the edge of the lake; but the fishermen had gotten out of them and were washing their nets. |
And he got into one of the boats, which was Simōn’s, and asked him to launch out a little way from the land. After sitting down, he began teaching the crowd from the boat. | And he got into one of the boats, which was Simōn’s, and asked him to launch out a little way from the land. After sitting down, he began teaching the crowd from the boat. |
When he had stopped speaking, he said to Simōn, “Launch out into the deep water and drop down your nets for a haul of fish.” | When he had stopped speaking, he said to Simōn, “Launch out into the deep water and drop down your nets for a haul of fish.” |
in response, Simōn said, “Master, after working hard all night, we caught nothing; but at your word, I will drop down the nets.” | in response, Simōn said, “Master, after working hard all night, we caught nothing; but at your word, I will drop down the nets.” |
After doing this, they gathered up a great amount of fish, and their nets began to break. | After doing this, they gathered up a great amount of fish, and their nets began to break. |
And they signaled to their partners in the other boat for them to come and help them. And they came and filled both of the boats, so that they began to sink. | And they signaled to their partners in the other boat for them to come and help them. And they came and filled both of the boats, so that they began to sink. |
But after seeing this, Simōn Peter fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Go away from me Lord, for I am a sinful man!” | But after seeing this, Simōn Peter fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Go away from me Lord, for I am a sinful man!” |
For amazement had seized him and all those with him because of the haul of fish which they had taken; | For amazement had seized him and all those with him because of the haul of fish which they had taken; |

and likewise were Jacōb[1] and Jōhn, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simōn. And Jesus said to Simōn, “Stop being afraid! From now on you will be catching men.” | and likewise were Jacōb[1] and Jōhn, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simōn. And Jesus said to Simōn, “Stop being afraid! |
And after bringing their boats to land, they left everything and followed him. | And after bringing their boats to land, they left everything and followed him. |
Cleansing a Leper
(Matt 8:1-4; Mark 1:40-45)
And he came into one of the cities, and look! There was a man full of leprosy. After seeing Jesus, he fell on his face and implored him, saying, “Lord, if you want, you are able to make me clean.” | And he came into one of the cities, and look! There was a man full of leprosy. After seeing Jesus, he fell on his face and implored him, saying, “Lord, if you want, you are able to make me clean.” |
And after stretching out his hand, he touched him, saying, “I am willing; be cleansed.” And immediately the leprosy left him. | And after stretching out his hand, he touched him, saying, “I am willing; be cleansed.” And immediately the leprosy left him. |
And he ordered him to tell no one, “But go and show yourself to the priest and make an offering for your cleansing, just as Mōsēs commanded,[2] as a testimony to them.” | And he ordered him to tell no one, “But go and show yourself to the priest and make an offering for your cleansing, just as Mōsēs commanded,[2] as a testimony to them.” |
But the news about him was spreading even farther, and large crowds were gathering to hear him and to be healed of their sicknesses. | But the news about him was spreading even farther, and large crowds were gathering to hear him and to be healed by him of their sicknesses. |
But Jesus would often withdraw to the deserted area and pray. | But Jesus would often withdraw to the deserted area and pray. |
Healing a Paralytic
(Matt 9:1-8; Mark 2:1-12)
And it happened one day that he was teaching and some Pharisees and law teachers were sitting there, who had come from every village of Galilee and Judea and from Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was in his healing. | And it happened one day that he was teaching and some Pharisees and law teachers were sitting there, who had come from every village of Galilee and Judea and from Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was in his healing. |
And suddenly! some men were carrying a paralyzed man on a stretcher; and they were trying to bring him in and to set him down before him. | And suddenly! some men were carrying a paralyzed man on a stretcher; and they were trying to bring him in and to set him down before him. |
But after not finding any way to bring him in because of the crowd, they climbed up on the roof. They let him down through the tiles with his stretcher, into the middle of the crowd, in front of Jesus. | But after not finding any way to bring him in because of the crowd, they climbed up on the roof. They let him down through the tiles with his stretcher, into the middle of the crowd, in front of Jesus. |
And after seeing their faith, he said, “Friend, your sins are forgiven you.” | And after seeing their faith, he said to him, “Friend, your sins are forgiven you.” |

The scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, “Who is this man who speaks blasphemies? Who is able to forgive sins, except God alone?” | The scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, “Who is this man who speaks blasphemies? Who is able to forgive sins, except God alone?” |
But after recognizing their reasonings, in response, Jesus said to them, “Why are you reasoning in your hearts? | But after recognizing their reasonings, in response, Jesus said to them, “Why are you reasoning in your hearts? |
Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins have been forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? | Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins have been forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? |
But, so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins,” – He said to the paralytic – “I say to you, get up, and pick up your stretcher and go home.” | But, so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins,” (He said to the paralytic) “I say to you, get up, and pick up your stretcher and go home.” |
Immediately after getting up before them and picking up the thing on which he was lying, He departed into his home glorifying God. | Immediately after getting up before them and picking up the thing on which he was lying, He departed into his home glorifying God. |
They were all struck with astonishment and began glorifying God; and they were filled with fear, saying, “We have seen unusual things today.” | They were all struck with astonishment and began glorifying God; and they were filled with fear, saying, “We have seen unusual things today.” |
Calling of Levi
(Matt 9:9-13; Mark 2:13-17)
After these things, he went out and saw a tax collector named Levi sitting in the tax office, and he said to him, “Follow me.” | After these things, he went out and saw a tax collector named Levi sitting in the tax office, and he said to him, “Follow me.” |
And after leaving everything behind, and getting up, he began to follow him. | And after leaving everything behind, and getting up, he began to follow him. |
And Levi gave a big reception for him in his home; and there was a great crowd of tax collectors and others who were reclining at the table with them. | And Levi gave a big reception for him in his home; and there was a great crowd of tax collectors and others who were reclining at the table with them. |
The Pharisees and their scribes began grumbling at his disciples, saying, “Why do you eat and drink with the tax collectors and sinners?” | The Pharisees and their scribes began grumbling at his disciples, saying, “Why do you eat and drink with the tax collectors and sinners?” |
And in response, Jesus said to them, “It is not those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick. | And in response, Jesus said to them, “It is not those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick. |
I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.” | I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.” |
Question about Fasting
(Matt 9:14-17; Mark 2:18-22)
And they said to him, “The disciples of Jōhn often fast and offer prayers, likewise the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours eat and drink.” | And they said to him, “Why do the disciples of Jōhn often fast and offer prayers, likewise the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours eat and drink.” |
And Jesus said to them, “You cannot make the followers of the bridegroom fast while the bridegroom is with them, can you? | And he said to them, “You cannot make the followers of the bridegroom fast while the bridegroom is with them, can you? |
But the days will come; and when the bridegroom is taken away from them, then they will fast in those days.” | But the days will come; and when the bridegroom is taken away from them, then they will fast in those days.” |
And he was also telling them a parable: “No one tears a piece from a new garment and puts it on an old garment; otherwise he will not only tear the new, but also the patch from the new will not match the old. | And he was also telling them a parable: “No one puts a piece from a new garment on an old garment; otherwise he will not only tear the new, but also the patch from the new will not match the old. |
And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the new wine will burst the wineskins and it will gush out, and the skins will be ruined. | And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the new wine will burst the wineskins and it will gush out, and the skins will be ruined. |
But new wine must be put into new wineskins. | But new wine must be put into new wineskins and both are preserved. |
And no one, after drinking old wine wants new wine; for he says, ‘The old is better.’” | And no one, after drinking old wine immediately wants new wine; for he says, ‘The old is better.’” |
