Jesus before Pilate
(Matt 27:1-2, 11-14; Mark 15:1-5; Jōhn 18:28-38)
And after getting up, the whole group of them brought him to Pilate. | And after getting up, the whole group of them brought him to Pilate. |
And they began to accuse him, saying, “We found this man misleading our nation and forbidding to pay taxes to Caesar, and saying that he himself is Christ, a King.” | And they began to accuse him, saying, “We found this man misleading the nation and forbidding to pay taxes to Caesar, and saying that he himself is Christ, a King.” |
23:3 ὁ
δὲ
σὺ
εἶ
ὁ
τῶν
So Pilate asked him, saying, “Are you the King of the Jews?” And in response to him, he said, “It is as you say.” | So Pilate asked him, saying, “Are you the King of the Jews?” And in response to him, he said, “It is as you say.” |
Then Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, “I find no guilt in this man.” | Then Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, “I find no guilt in this man.” |
But they kept on insisting, saying, “He stirs up the people, teaching all over Judea, starting from Galilee unto this place.” | But they kept on insisting, saying, “He stirs up the people, teaching all over Judea, starting from Galilee unto this place.” |
Jesus before Hērōd
After hearing it, Pilate asked if the man was a Galilean. | After hearing of Galilee, Pilate asked if the man was a Galilean. |
And after learning that he was of Hērōd’s jurisdiction, he sent him to Hērōd, who himself also was in Jerusalem on that day. | And after learning that he was of Hērōd’s jurisdiction, he sent him to Hērōd, who himself also was in Jerusalem on that day. |
Now Hērōd was very glad when he saw Jesus; for he had wanted to see him for a long time, because he had been hearing about him and was hoping to see some sign performed by him. | Now Hērōd was very glad when he saw Jesus; for he had wanted to see him for a long time, because he had been hearing much about him and was hoping to see some sign performed by him. |
And he questioned him with many words; but he answered him nothing. | And he questioned him with many words; but he answered him nothing. |
And the chief priests and the scribes were standing there, accusing him vehemently. | And the chief priests and the scribes were standing there, accusing him vehemently. |
After treating him with contempt and mocking him, and dressing in a splendid robe, Hērōd with his soldiers sent him back to Pilate. | After treating him with contempt and mocking him, and dressing him in a splendid robe, Hērōd with his soldiers sent him back to Pilate. |
Now Hērōd and Pilate became friends with one another that very day; for before there used to be enmity between them. | Now Hērōd and Pilate became friends with one another that very day; for before there used to be enmity between them. |
Jesus Sentenced to Die
(Matt 22:15-26; Mark 15:6-15; Jōhn 18:39-19:16)
Pilate summoned the chief priests and the rulers and the people, | Pilate summoned the chief priests and the rulers and the people, |
he said to them, “You brought this man to me as one who incites the people, and listen, having examined him before you, I have found no guilt in this man regarding what you have charged against him. | he said to them, “You brought this man to me as one who incites the people, and listen, having examined him before you, I have found no guilt in this man regarding what you have charged against him. |
No, nor has Hērōd, for he sent him back to us; and notice! Nothing deserving of death has been committed by him. | No, nor has Hērōd, for he sent him back to us; and notice! Nothing deserving of death has been committed by him. |
Therefore after punishing him, I will release him.” | Therefore after punishing him, I will release him.” |
[Now it was necessary to release one prisoner to them at the feast.] | [Now it was necessary to release one prisoner to them at the feast.] |
But they called out all together, saying, “Away with this man, and release Barabbas for us!” | But they called out all together, saying, “Away with this man, and release Barabbas for us!” |
(He was one who had been thrown into prison for an insurrection made in the city, and for murder.) | (He was one who had been thrown into prison for an insurrection made in the city, and for murder.) |
Pilate, wanting to release Jesus, called to them again, | Pilate, wanting to release Jesus, called again, |
but they kept shouting, saying, “Crucify him!” | but they kept shouting, saying, “Crucify, crucify him!” |
23:22 ὁ
δὲ
τί
γὰρ

And he said to them the third time, “Why, what evil has this man done? I have found in him no death guilt; therefore after punishing him, I will release him.” | And he said to them the third time, “Why, what evil has this man done? I have found in him no death guilt; therefore after punishing him, I will release him.” |
But they were persistent, with loud voices asking to crucify him. And the voices of them prevailed. | But they were persistent, with loud voices asking to crucify him. And the voices of them and the chief priests prevailed. |

And he released the man they were asking for, who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, but he delivered Jesus to their desire. | And he released to them the man they were asking for, who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, but he delivered Jesus to their desire. |
Crucifixion of Jesus
(Matt 27:32-44; Mark 15:21-32; Jōhn 19:17-27)
As they led him away, they seized a man, Simōn of Cyrēnē, coming in from the country, and placed the cross on him to carry behind Jesus. | As they led him away, they seized a man, Simōn of Cyrēnē, coming in from the country, and placed the cross on him to carry behind Jesus. |
