Plucking Grain on the Sabbath
(Matt 12:1-8; Mark 2:23-28)

Now it happened on the Sabbath that he was passing through some grainfields; and his disciples were plucking the heads of grain and rubbing off the chaff with their hands, and eating the grain. Now it happened on the second Sabbath that he was passing through some grainfields; and his disciples were plucking the heads of grain and rubbing off the chaff with their hands, and eating the grain.
6:2 τινὲς δὲ τῶν Φαρισαίων εἶπαν, τί ποιεῖτε οὐκ ἔξεστιν τοῖς σάββασιν; 2 τινὲς δὲ τῶν Φαρισαίων εἶπον αὐτοῖς, τί ποιεῖτε οὐκ ἔξεστιν ποιεῖν ἐν τοῖς σάββασι;
But some of the Pharisees said, “Why do you do what is not lawful on the Sabbath?” But some of the Pharisees said to them, “Why do you do what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath?”
6:3 καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς πρὸς αὐτοὺς εἶπεν Ἰησοῦς, οὐδὲ τοῦτο ἀνέγνωτε ἐποίησεν Δαυὶδ ὅτε ἐπείνασεν αὐτὸς καὶ οἱ μετ᾿ αὐτοῦ [ὄντες], 3 καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς πρὸς αὐτοὺς εἶπεν Ἰησοῦς, οὐδὲ τοῦτο ἀνέγνωτε, ἐποίησε Δαβίδ, ὁπότε ἐπείνασεν αὐτὸς καὶ οἱ μετ᾿ αὐτοῦ ὄντες;
And in response to them, Jesus said, “Have you not even read what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him, And in response to them, Jesus said, “Have you not even read what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him,
6:4 [ὡς] εἰσῆλθεν εἰς τὸν οἶκον τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ τοὺς ἄρτους τῆς προθέσεως λαβὼν ἔφαγεν καὶ ἔδωκεν τοῖς μετ᾿ αὐτοῦ, οὓς οὐκ ἔξεστιν φαγεῖν εἰ μὴ μόνους τοὺς ἱερεῖς; 4 ὡς εἰσῆλθεν εἰς τὸν οἶκον τοῦ θεοῦ, καὶ τοὺς ἄρτους τῆς προθέσεως ἔλαβε, καὶ ἔφαγε, καὶ ἔδωκε καὶ τοῖς μετ᾿ αὐτοῦ, οὓς οὐκ ἔξεστι φαγεῖν εἰ μὴ μόνους τοὺς ἱερεῖς;
how he entered the house of God, and after taking the showbread loaves, he ate and gave some to those with him, which is not lawful for any to eat except the priests alone?” how he entered the house of God, and after taking the showbread loaves, he ate and gave some to those with him, which is not lawful for any to eat except the priests alone?”
And he was saying to them, “The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.” And he was saying to them, “The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”

Man with Withered Hand
(Matt 12:9-14; Mark 3:1-6)

Then it happened on a different Sabbath he entered the synagogue and was teaching. And a man was there whose right hand was withered. Then it happened on a different Sabbath he entered the synagogue and was teaching. And a man was there whose right hand was withered.
The scribes and the Pharisees were watching him to see if he would heal on the Sabbath, so that they might find a cause to accuse him. The scribes and the Pharisees were watching him to see if he would heal on the Sabbath, so that they might find a cause to accuse him.
But he knew their thoughts, and he said to the man having the withered hand, “Get up and stand in the middle!” And after getting up, he stood. But he knew their thoughts, and he said to the man having the withered hand, “Get up and stand in the middle!” And after getting up, he stood.
6:9 εἶπεν δὲ Ἰησοῦς πρὸς αὐτούς, ἐπερωτῶ ὑμᾶς εἰ ἔξεστιν τῷ σαββάτῳ ἀγαθοποιῆσαι κακοποιῆσαι, ψυχὴν σῶσαι ἀπολέσαι; 9 εἶπεν οὖν Ἰησοῦς πρὸς αὐτούς, Ἐπερωτήσω ὑμᾶς, τί ἔξεστι τοῖς σάββασιν, ἀγαθοποιῆσαι κακοποιῆσαι, ψυχὴν σῶσαι ἀπολέσαι;
And Jesus said to them, “I ask you, is it lawful to do good or to do harm on the Sabbath, to save a life or to destroy it?” And Jesus said to them, “I ask you, is it lawful to do good or to do harm on the Sabbath, to save a life or to destroy it?”
After looking around at them all, he said to him, “Stretch out your hand!” And he did and his hand was restored. After looking around at them all, he said to the man, “Stretch out your hand!” And thus he did and his hand was restored healthy as the other.
But they themselves were filled with rage, and discussed together what they might do to Jesus. But they themselves were filled with rage, and discussed together what they might do to Jesus.

Choosing the Twelve
(Matt 10:1-4; Mark 3:13-19)

And it happened in those days that he went off into the mountain to pray, and he spent the whole night in prayer to God. And it happened in those days that he went off into the mountain to pray, and he spent the whole night in prayer to God.
and Matthew and Thōmas; Jacōb the son of Alphaeus, and Simōn who was called the Zealōt; and Matthew and Thōmas; Jacōb the son of Alphaeus, and Simōn who was called the Zealōt;
Judas the son of Jacōb, and Judas Iscariōt, who became a traitor. Judas the son of Jacōb, and Judas Iscariōt, who became a traitor.

Ministering to a Great Multitude
(Matt 4:23-25)

And after coming down with them, he stood on a level place; and there was a large crowd of his disciples, and a great throng of people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the seacoast of Tyre and Sidōn, And after coming down with them, he stood on a level place; and there was a crowd of his disciples, and a great throng of people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the seacoast of Tyre and Sidōn, who came to hear him, and to be healed from their diseases;
who came to hear him, and to be healed from their diseases; and those who were oppressed with unclean spirits were being cured. and those who were oppressed with unclean spirits were being cured.
And the whole crowd was trying to touch him, because power was coming from him and healing them all. And the whole crowd was trying to touch him, because power was coming from him and healing them all.

Blessings and Woes
(Matt 5:1-12)

Blessed are the ones who hunger now, for you shall be satisfied. Blessed are the ones who weep now, for you shall laugh. Blessed are the ones who hunger now, for you shall be satisfied. Blessed are the ones who weep now, for you shall laugh.
Rejoice on that day and leap for joy, for look, your reward is great in heaven. For in the same way their fathers used to treat the prophets. Rejoice on that day and leap for joy, for look, your reward is great in heaven. For in the same way their fathers used to treat the prophets.
Woe to you who are satisfied now, for you shall be hungry. Woe to you who laugh now, for you shall mourn and weep. Woe to you who are satisfied now, for you shall be hungry. Woe to you who laugh now, for you shall mourn and weep.

Love for Enemies
(Matt 5:38-48; 7:12a)

To the one who hits you on the cheek, offer him the other also; and whoever takes away your cloak, don’t withhold your tunic from him either. To the one who hits you on the cheek, offer him the other also; and whoever takes away your cloak, don’t withhold your tunic from him either.
Give to everyone who asks of you; and from the one who takes away your things, don’t ask them back. Give to everyone who asks of you; and from the one who takes away your things, don’t ask them back.
6:34 καὶ ἐὰν δανίσητε παρ᾿ ὧν ἐλπίζετε λαβεῖν, ποία ὑμῖν χάρις [ἐστίν]; καὶ ἁμαρτωλοὶ ἁμαρτωλοῖς δανίζουσιν ἵνα ἀπολάβωσιν τὰ ἴσα. 34 καὶ ἐὰν δανείζητε παρ᾿ ὧν ἐλπίζετε ἀπολαβεῖν, ποία ὑμῖν χάρις ἐστί;
If you lend to those from whom you expect to receive, what benefit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners in order to receive back the same amount. If you lend to those from whom you expect to receive, what benefit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners in order to receive back the same amount.

Judging Others
(Matt 7:1-5)

“Stop judging, and you will not be judged; and stop condemning, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven. “Stop judging, and you will not be judged; and stop condemning, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven.
Give, and it will be given to you. They will deliver into your lap a good measure, pressed down, shaken together, overflowing. For by the measurement you measure, it will be measured back to you.” Give, and it will be given to you. They will deliver into your lap a good measure, pressed down, shaken together, overflowing. For by the same measurement you measure, it will be measured back to you.”
6:39 εἶπεν δὲ καὶ παραβολὴν αὐτοῖς· μήτι δύναται τυφλὸς τυφλὸν ὁδηγεῖν;
οὐχὶ ἀμφότεροι εἰς βόθυνον ἐμπεσοῦνται;
39 εἶπε δὲ παραβολὴν αὐτοῖς, μήτι δύναται τυφλὸς τυφλὸν ὁδηγεῖν;
οὐχὶ ἀμφότεροι εἰς βόθυνον πεσοῦνται;
And he also spoke a parable to them: “A blind man cannot guide a blind man, can he? Won’t they both fall into a pit? And he also spoke a parable to them: “A blind man cannot guide a blind man, can he? Won’t they both fall into a pit?
A student is not above his teacher; but everyone who has been fully trained will be like his teacher. A student is not above his teacher; but everyone who has been fully trained will be like his teacher.
6:41 Τί δὲ βλέπεις τὸ κάρφος τὸ ἐν τῷ ὀφθαλμῷ τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ σου, τὴν δὲ δοκὸν τὴν ἐν τῷ ἰδίῳ ὀφθαλμῷ οὐ κατανοεῖς; 41 Τί δὲ βλέπεις τὸ κάρφος τὸ ἐν τῷ ὀφθαλμῷ τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ σου, τὴν δὲ δοκὸν τὴν ἐν τῷ ἰδίῳ ὀφθαλμῷ οὐ κατανοεῖς;
Why do you look at the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but don’t notice the plank that is in your own eye? Why do you look at the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but don’t notice the plank that is in your own eye?
6:42 πῶς δύνασαι λέγειν τῷ ἀδελφῷ σου, ἀδελφέ, ἄφες ἐκβάλω τὸ κάρφος τὸ ἐν τῷ ὀφθαλμῷ σου, αὐτὸς τὴν ἐν τῷ ὀφθαλμῷ σου δοκὸν οὐ βλέπων;
42  πῶς δύνασαι λέγειν τῷ ἀδελφῷ σου, ἀδελφέ, ἄφες ἐκβάλω τὸ κάρφος τὸ ἐν τῷ ὀφθαλμῷ σου, αὐτὸς τὴν ἐν τῷ ὀφθαλμῷ σου δοκὸν οὐ βλέπων;
How are you able to say to your brother, ‘Brother, allow me pull out the speck that is in your eye,’ when you yourself don’t see the plank that is in your own eye? you hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the speck that is in your brother’s eye.

Tree Known by Its Fruit
(Matt 7:17-20; 12:34b-35)

For a good tree does not produce rotten fruit, nor, in turn, does a rotten tree produce good fruit. For a good tree does not produce rotten fruit, nor does a rotten tree produce good fruit.
For each tree is known by its own fruit. For men don’t gather figs from thistles, nor do they pick grapes from a bramble bush. For each tree is known by its own fruit. For men don’t gather figs from thistles, nor do they pick grapes from a bramble bush.

Two Foundations
(Matt 7:24-27)

6:46 Τί δέ με καλεῖτε, Κύριε κύριε, καὶ οὐ ποιεῖτε λέγω; 46 Τί δέ με καλεῖτε, Κύριε, κύριε, καὶ οὐ ποιεῖτε λέγω;
“Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and don’t do what I say? “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and don’t do what I say?
But after hearing and not acting likewise, is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation; and the torrent beat against it and immediately it collapsed, and the ruin of that house was great.” But after hearing and not acting likewise, is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation; and the torrent beat against it and immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great.”

[1]In some English versions, he is called James
