Jesus before Pilate
(Mt 27.1‑2, 11‑14; Lk 23.1‑5; Jn 18.28‑38)
And in the morning, the chief priests with the elders and scribes and the whole Council, immediately held a consultation. After binding Jesus, they led him away and delivered him to Pilate. | And in the morning, the chief priests with the elders and scribes and the whole Council, immediately held a consultation. After binding Jesus, they led him away and delivered him to Pilate. |
Pilate questioned him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” And in response, he said, “It is as you say.” | Pilate questioned him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” And in response, he said, “It is as you say.” |
The chief priests began to accuse him about many things. | The chief priests began to accuse him about many things.[1] |
Then Pilate began questioning him again, saying, “Don’t you answer anything? Look, how many things they are accusing of you!” | Then Pilate questioned him again, saying, “Don’t you answer anything? Look, how many things they are accusing of you!” |
But Jesus didn’t answer anything more; so Pilate was amazed. | But Jesus didn’t answer anything more; so Pilate was amazed. |
Jesus Sentenced to Die
(Mt 27.15‑26; Lk 23.13‑25; Jn 18.39–19.16)
Now at the feast he used to release for them one prisoner whom they requested. | Now at the feast he used to release for them one prisoner whom they requested. |

The crowd went up and began asking him to do as he used to do for them. | The crowd went up and began asking him to do as he used to do for them. |
Pilate answered them, saying, “Do you want that I should release for you the King of the Jews?” | Pilate answered them, saying, “Do you want that I should release for you the King of the Jews?” |
For he was aware that the chief priests had handed him over because of envy. | For he was aware that the chief priests had handed him over because of envy. |
But the chief priests motivated the crowd that it would ask him to release Barabbas for them instead. | But the chief priests motivated the crowd that it would ask him to release Barabbas for them instead. |
In response again, Pilate said to them, “Then what do you want I should do with him whom you call the King of the Jews?” | In response again, Pilate said to them again, “Then what do you want that I should do with him whom you call the King of the Jews?” |
They shouted again, “Crucify him!” | They shouted again, “Crucify him!” |
But Pilate said to them, “Why, what evil has he done?” But they shouted even more, “Crucify him!” | But Pilate said to them, “Why, what evil has he done?” But they shouted even more, “Crucify him!” |
Wishing to provide satisfaction for the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them, and after whipping Jesus, he delivered him that he should be crucified. | Wishing to provide satisfaction for the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them, and after whipping Jesus, he delivered him that he should be crucified. |
