Jonathan’s Victory
1 Now it happened on a day, that Jonathan the son of Saul said to the young man who carried his armour, Come, and let’s go over to the Philistines’ garrison, that is on the other side. But he told not his father.
1 And a day came, and Jōnathan son of Saoul said to the youth who carried his armour, “Come, and let us go over to Messab of the allophyles which is on beyond that,” but he didn't tell his father. | 1 And a day came, and Jōnathan son of Saoul said to the youth who carried his armour, “Come, and let us go over to Messab of the allophyles which is on beyond that,” but he didn't tell his father. |
2 And Saul tarried in the uttermost part of Gibeah under a pomegranate tree which is in Migron; and the people who were with him were about 600 men;
2 And Saoul was sitting on the top of the hill under the pomegranate tree that is at Magdōn, and there were with him about 600 men, | 2 And Saoul was sitting on the top of the hill under the pomegranate tree that is at Magdōn, and there were with him about 600 men, |
3 And Ahiah, the son of Ahitub, Ichabod’s brother, the son of Phinehas, the son of Ēli, Yahweh’s priest in Shiloh, wearing an ephod. And the people didn’t know that Jonathan was gone.

And the people did not know that Jōnathan had gone. | 3 and Achia son of Achitōb, Jōchabēd’s brother, son of Phinees son of Hēli the priest of God in Sēlōm, carrying an ephod. And the people did not know that Jōnathan had gone. |
4 And between the passages, by which Jonathan sought to go over to the Philistines’ garrison, there was a sharp rock on the one side and a sharp rock on the other side; and the name of the one was Bozez, and the name of the other Seneh.
4 And in the middle of the pass, where Jōnathan was seeking to go over to the military base of the allophyles, there was a rocky crag here and a rocky crag there; the name of the one was Bazes, and the name of the other, Senna; | 4 And in the middle of the pass, where Jōnathan was seeking to go over to the military base of the allophyles, there was a rocky crag here and a rocky crag there; the name of the one was Bazes, and the name of the other, Senna; |
5 The forefront of the one was situate northward over against Michmash, and the other southward over against Gibeah.
5 one way from the north going to Machmas, and the other way from the south, going to Gabee | 5 one way from the north going to Machmas, and the other way from the south, going to Gabee |
6 And Jonathan said to the young man who carried his armour, Come, and let’s go over to the garrison of these uncircumcised: it may be that Yahweh will work for us; for there is no restraint to Yahweh to save by many or by few.
6 And Jōnathan said to the youth who carried his armour, “Come, let us go over to Messab of these uncircumcised, if perhaps the Lord may do something for us, because nothing can hinder the Lord from saving by many or by few.” | 6 And Jōnathan said to the youth who carried his armour, “Come, let us go over to Messab of these uncircumcised, if perhaps the Lord may do something for us, because nothing can hinder the Lord from saving by many or by few.” |
7 And his armourbearer said to him, Do all that is in your heart: turn you; behold, I am with you according to your heart.
7 And his armour-bearer said to him, “Do all that your heart inclines to; look! I am with you; my heart is as your heart.” | 7 And his armour-bearer said to him, “Do all that your heart inclines to; look! I am with you; my heart is as your heart.” |
8 Then said Jonathan, Behold, we will pass over to these men, and we will discover ourselves to them.
8 And Jōnathan said, “Look! we are going to cross over to the men, and we will slide down to them, | 8 And Jōnathan said, “Look! we are going to cross over to the men, and we will slide down to them, |
9 If they say thus to us, stay until we come to you; then we will stand still in our place, and won’t go up to them.
9 and if this is what they say to us, ‘Stand there until we tell you,’ then we will stand by ourselves and definitely not go up to them, | 9 and if this is what they say to us, ‘Stand there until we tell you,’ then we will stand by ourselves and definitely not go up to them, |
10 But if they say thus, Come up to us; then we will go up; for Yahweh has delivered them into our hand; and this shall be a sign to us.
10 and if this is what they say to us, ‘Come up to us,’ then we will go up, because the Lord has given them into our hands; this will be the sign for us.” | 10 and if this is what they say to us, ‘Come up to us,’ then we will go up, because the Lord has given them into our hands; this will be the sign for us.” |
11 And both of them discovered themselves to the garrison of the Philistines; and the Philistines said, Behold, the Hebrews come forth out of the holes where they had hid themselves.
11 And both of them entered into Messab of the allophyles, and the allophyles said, “Look! the Hebrews are coming out of their holes where they hid there.” | 11 And both of them entered into Messab of the allophyles, and the allophyles said, “Look! the Hebrews are coming out of their holes where they hid there.” |
12 And the men of the garrison answered Jonathan and his armourbearer, and said, Come up to us, and we will show you a thing. And Jonathan said to his armourbearer, Come up after me; for Yahweh has delivered them into the hand of Israēl.

12 And the men of Messab answered Jōnathan and his armorbearer and saying, “Come up to us, and we will show you something.” And Jōnathan said to his armorbearer, “Come up after me, because the Lord has given them into the hands of Israēl.” | 12 And the men of Messab answered Jōnathan and his armorbearer and saying, “Come up to us, and we will show you something.” And Jōnathan said to his armorbearer, “Come up after me, because the Lord has given them into the hands of Israēl.” |
13 And Jonathan climbed up on his hands and on his feet, and his armourbearer after him; and they fell before Jonathan; and his armourbearer killed after him.
13 And Jōnathan climbed up on his hands and on his feet, and his armour-bearer with him, and they looked at the face of Jōnathan, and he struck them, and his armour-bearer behind him was providing supplies. | 13 And Jōnathan climbed up on his hands and on his feet, and his armour-bearer with him, and they looked at the face of Jōnathan, and he struck them, and his armour-bearer behind him was providing supplies. |
14 And that first slaughter, which Jonathan and his armourbearer made, was about 20 men, within as it were a half acre of land, which a yoke of oxen might plow.
14 And the first blow that Jōnathan and his armour-bearer inflicted was about 20 men, with darts and with sling stones and with pebbles of the plain. | 14 And the first blow that Jōnathan and his armour-bearer inflicted was about 20 men, with darts and with sling stones and with pebbles of the plain. |
15 And there was trembling in the army, in the field, and among all the people: the garrison, and the spoilers, they also trembled, and the earth quaked; so it was a very great trembling.
15 And there was a dread in the camp and in the field, and all the people, those in Messab and the ones who destroy were astounded, and they didn't want to act, and the land was astonished, and the dread was from the Lord. | 15 And there was a dread in the camp and in the field, and all the people, those in Messab and the ones who destroy were astounded, and they didn't want to act, and the land was astonished, and the dread was from the Lord. |
16 And the watchmen of Saul in Gibeah of Benjamin looked; and, behold, the multitude melted away, and they went on beating down one another.
16 And Saoul’s lookouts in Gabee of Benjamin saw, and look! the camp was shaken up on this side and that. | 16 And Saoul’s lookouts in Gabee of Benjamin saw, and look! the camp was shaken up on this side and that. |
17 Then said Saul to the people who were with him, Number now, and see who is gone from us. And when they had numbered, behold, Jonathan and his armourbearer were not there.
17 And Saoul said to the people who were with him, “Please call the roll and see who has gone from us,” and they called the roll, and look! Jōnathan and his armour-bearer were not to be found. | 17 And Saoul said to the people who were with him, “Please call the roll and see who has gone from us,” and they called the roll, and look! Jōnathan and his armour-bearer were not to be found. |
18 And Saul said to Ahiah, Bring here the ark of God. For the ark of God was at that time with the sons of Israēl.
18 And Saoul said to Achia, “Bring the ephod,” because in that day, he bore the ephod before Israēl. | 18 And Saoul said to Achia, “Bring the ephod,” because in that day, he bore the ephod before Israēl. |
19 And it happened, while Saul talked to the priest, that the noise that was in the army of the Philistines went on and increased; and Saul said to the priest, Withdraw your hand.
19 And it happened, while Saoul was talking to the priest, that the noise in the camp of the allophyles was proceeding by proceeding greatly, and Saoul said to the priest, “Bring your hands together.” | 19 And it happened, while Saoul was talking to the priest, that the noise in the camp of the allophyles was proceeding by proceeding greatly, and Saoul said to the priest, “Bring your hands together.” |
20 And Saul and all the people who were with him assembled themselves, and they came to the battle: and, behold, every man’s sword was against his fellow, and there was a very great defeat.
20 And Saoul and all the people who were with him shouted and came to the battle, and look! a man’s sword was against his neighbour, a very great confusion. | 20 And Saoul and all the people who were with him went up and came to the battle, and look! a man’s sword was against his neighbour, a very great confusion. |
21 Moreover the Hebrews who were with the Philistines before that time, which went up with them into the camp from the country all around, even they also turned to be with the Israēlites who were with Saul and Jonathan.
21 And the slaves who yesterday and the third day had been with the allophyles who had gone up into the camp, turned about, even they, to be with Israēl who were with Saoul and Jōnathan. | 21 And the slaves who yesterday and the third day had been with the allophyles who had gone up into the camp, turned about, even they, to be with Israēl who were with Saoul and Jōnathan. |
22 Likewise all the men of Israēl which had hid themselves in mount Ephraim, when they heard that the Philistines fled, even they also followed hard after them in the battle.
22 And all Israēl who were hiding in the Ephraim mountain also heard that the allophyles had fled, and they united together, even they followed after them in battle. | 22 And all Israēl who were hiding in the Ephraim mountain also heard that the allophyles had fled, and they united together, even they followed after them in battle. |
23 So Yahweh saved Israēl that day; and the battle passed over to Beth-aven.

27 But Jonathan didn’t hear when his father charged the people with the oath; therefore he put forth the end of the rod that was in his hand, and dipped it in a honeycomb, and put his hand to his mouth; and his eyes were enlightened.

28 Then answered one of the people, and said, Your father straitly charged the people with an oath, saying, Cursed be the man who eats any food this day. And the people were faint.

29 Then said Jonathan, My father has troubled the land: see, please, how my eyes have been enlightened, because I tasted a little of this honey.

30 How much more, if perhaps the people had eaten freely today of the spoil of their enemies which they found? for had there not been now a much greater slaughter among the Philistines?

31 And they smote the Philistines that day from Michmash to Aijalon; and the people were very faint.

33 Then they told Saul, saying, Behold, the people sin against Yahweh, in that they eat with the blood. And he said, You have transgressed: roll a great stone to me this day.

36 And Saul said, Let’s go down after the Philistines by night, and spoil them until the morning light, and let’s not leave a man of them. And they said, Do whatever seems good to you. Then said the priest, Let’s draw near here to God.
