Parable of the Vineyard
1
Now will I sing to my well-beloved a song of my beloved touching his vineyard.
My well-beloved has a vineyard in a very fruitful hill.

1 Now I will sing for my beloved a song of my loved one concerning my vineyard. My beloved had a vineyard on a hill, on a fertile place. | 1 Now I will sing for my beloved a song of my loved one concerning my vineyard. My beloved had a vineyard on a hill, on a fertile place. |
2 And he fenced it, and gathered out the stones of it, and planted it with the choicest vine, and built a tower in the midst of it, and also made a winepress in it; and he looked that it should bring forth grapes, and it brought forth wild grapes.
2 And I put a hedge around it and fenced it in and planted a choice vine, and I built a tower in the middle of it and dug out a wine vat in it, and I waited for it to produce a cluster of grapes, but it produced thorns. | 2 And I put a hedge around it and fenced it in and planted a choice vine, and I built a tower in the middle of it and dug out a wine vat in it, and I waited for it to produce a cluster of grapes, but it produced thorns. |
3
And now, Oh inhabitants of Jerusalem, and men of Judah, judge, please, between me and my vineyard.
3 And now, man of Jouda and those who dwell in Jerousalēm, judge between me and my vineyard. | 3 And now, man of Jouda and those who dwell in Jerousalēm, judge between me and my vineyard. |
4 What could have been done more to my vineyard, that I haven’t done in it? Therefore, when I looked that it should bring forth grapes, brought it forth wild grapes?

4 What more might I do for my vineyard, and I haven’t done for it? Because I waited for it to produce a cluster of grapes, but it produced thorns. | 4 What more might I do for my vineyard, and I haven’t done for it? Because I waited for it to produce a cluster of grapes, but it produced thorns. |
5 And now go to; I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard: I will take away the hedge of it, and it shall be eaten up; and break down the wall of it, and it shall be trodden down.
5
But now I will declare to you what I will do to my vineyard.
I will remove its hedge, and it shall be plundered, and I will pull down its wall, and it shall be trampled down. |
5
But now I will declare to you what I will do to my vineyard.
I will remove its hedge, and it shall be plundered, and I will pull down its wall, and it shall be trampled down. |
6 And I will lay it waste: it shall not be pruned, nor dug; but there shall come up briers and thorns: I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain on it.
6 And I will abandon my vineyard, and it shall not be pruned or dug, and a thorn shall come up into it as into a barren land, and I will also command the clouds, that they don’t send rain to it. | 6 And I will abandon my vineyard, and it shall not be pruned or dug, and a thorn shall come up into it as into a barren land, and I will also command the clouds, that they don’t send rain to it. |
7 For the vineyard of Yahweh of armies is the house of Israēl, and the men of Judah his pleasant plant; and he looked for judgment, but behold oppression; for righteousness, but behold a cry.
7 For the vineyard of the Lord Sabaōth is the house of Israēl, and the man of Jouda is a beloved young plant; I waited for him to produce justice, but he produced lawlessness and not righteousness, but a cry! | 7 For the vineyard of the Lord Sabaōth is the house of Israēl, and the man of Jouda is a beloved young plant; I waited for him to produce justice, but he produced lawlessness and not righteousness, but a cry! |
Woes for the Wicked
8 Woe to those who join house to house, that lay field to field, till there be no place, that they may be placed alone in the midst of the earth!

8 Alas, those who join house to house and bring field next to field so that they may take something from their neighbor! Will you dwell alone on the land? | 8 Alas, those who join house to house and bring field next to field so that they may take something from their neighbor! Will you dwell alone on the land? |
9 In my ears said Yahweh of armies, Of a truth many houses shall be desolate, even great and fair, without inhabitant.
9 For these things were heard in the ears of the Lord Sabaōth; for if houses become many, large and beautiful ones shall be desolate, and there shall be no inhabitants in them. | 9 For these things were heard in the ears of the Lord Sabaōth; for if houses become many, large and beautiful ones shall be desolate, and there shall be no inhabitants in them. |
10 Yes, ten acres of vineyard shall yield one bath, and the seed of a homer shall yield an ephah.
10 For where ten yoke of oxen shall work, that land shall produce one jarful, and he who sows six artabe shall produce three measures. | 10 For where ten yoke of oxen shall work, that land shall produce one jarful, and he who sows six artabe shall produce three measures. |
11 Woe to those who rise up early in the morning, that they may follow beer; that continue until night, till wine inflame them!
11 Alas, those who rise early and pursue beer, who remain until evening, for wine will inflame them! | 11 Alas, those who rise early and pursue beer, who remain until evening, for wine will inflame them! |
12 And the harp, and the viol, the tabret, and pipe, and wine, are in their feasts; but they don’t regard the work of Yahweh, neither consider the operation of his hands.
12 For they drink wine with kithara and harp and drums and flutes but they don’t consider the works of the Lord or notice the works of his hands! | 12 For they drink wine with kithara and harp and drums and flutes but they don’t consider the works of the Lord or notice the works of his hands! |
13 Therefore my people are gone into captivity, because they have no knowledge; and their honourable men are famished, and their multitude dried up with thirst.
13 Therefore my people have become captive, because they don’t know the Lord; they have become a multitude of corpses, because of famine and thirst for water. | 13 Therefore my people have become captive, because they don’t know the Lord; they have become a multitude of corpses, because of famine and thirst for water. |
14 Therefore hell has enlarged herself, and opened her mouth without measure; and their glory, and their multitude, and their pomp, and he who rejoices, shall descend into it.
14 And Hades has enlarged its existence and opened its mouth without ceasing; and the glorious ones and the great ones and the rich ones and the pestilent ones shall descend. | 14 And Hades has enlarged its existence and opened its mouth without ceasing; and the glorious ones and the great ones and the rich ones and the pestilent ones shall descend. |
15 And the mean man shall be brought down, and the mighty man shall be humbled, and the eyes of the lofty shall be humbled.
15 And a man shall be humbled and a husband shall be dishonoured, and the arrogant eyes shall be humbled. | 15 And a man shall be humbled and a husband shall be dishonoured, and the arrogant eyes shall be humbled. |
16 But Yahweh of armies shall be exalted in judgment, and God that is holy shall be consecrated in righteousness.
16 But the Lord Sabaōth shall be exalted in judgment, and the holy God shall be glorified in righteousness. | 16 But the Lord Sabaōth shall be exalted in judgment, and the holy God shall be glorified in righteousness. |
17 Then shall the lambs feed after their manner, and the waste places of the fat ones shall strangers eat.
17 Then those who have been plundered shall graze like bulls, and lambs shall feed on the wastelands of those who have been removed. | 17 Then those who have been plundered shall graze like bulls, and lambs shall feed on the wastelands of those who have been removed. |
18 Woe to those who draw iniquity with cords of vanity, and sin as it were with a cart rope.
18 Alas, those who draw in sins as with a long rope and lawlessness as with a strap from a heifer’s yoke, | 18 Alas, those who draw in sins as with a long rope and lawlessness as with a strap from a heifer’s yoke, |
19 That say, Let him make speed, and hurry his work, that we may see it; and let the counsel of the Holy One of Israēl draw near and come, that we may know it!
19 who keep saying, “Let him quickly bring near the things he will do, in order that we may see them, and let the plan of the Holy One of Israēl come, in order that we may know!” | 19 who keep saying, “Let him quickly bring near the things he will do, in order that we may see them, and let the plan of the Holy One of Israēl come, in order that we may know!” |
20 Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!
20 Alas, those who call evil good and good evil, who make darkness light and light darkness, who make bitter sweet and sweet bitter! | 20 Alas, those who call evil good and good evil, who make darkness light and light darkness, who make bitter sweet and sweet bitter! |
21 Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight!
21 Alas, those who are intelligent in themselves and learned in front of themselves! | 21 Alas, those who are intelligent in themselves and learned in front of themselves! |
22 Woe to those who are mighty to drink wine, and men of strength to mix beer.
22 Alas, your strong ones who drink wine and the powerful ones who prepare the beer, | 22 Alas, your strong ones who drink wine and the powerful ones who prepare the beer, |
23 Which justify the wicked for reward, and take away the righteousness of the righteous from him!
23 who justify the ungodly for the sake of bribes and take away the right of the righteous one! | 23 who justify the ungodly for the sake of bribes and take away the right of the righteous one! |
24 Therefore as the fire devours the stubble, and the flame consumes the chaff, so their root shall be as rottenness, and their blossom shall go up as dust: because they have cast away the law of Yahweh of armies, and despised the word of the Holy One of Israēl.
24 Therefore, in the manner that stubble will be burned by a coal of fire and burned up by a neglected flame, so their root will be like dust and their blossom go up like dust; for they didn’t want the law of the Lord Sabaōth but have provoked the oracle of the Holy One of Israēl. |
25 Therefore is the anger of Yahweh kindled against his people, and he has stretched forth his hand against them, and has smitten them; and the hills did tremble, and their carcasses were torn in the midst of the streets. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

And the Lord Sabaōth was enraged with anger against his people, and he laid his hand on them and struck them;
and the mountains were provoked, and their carcasses became like dung
in the middle of the road.
And in all these things his wrath has not turned away, but his hand is still high. |

and the mountains were provoked, and their carcasses became like dung

And in all these things his wrath has not turned away, but his hand is still high. |
26 And he will lift up an ensign to the nations from far, and will hiss to them from the end of the earth: and, behold, they shall come with speed swiftly.
26 Therefore, he will raise a signal to the nations that are far away and whistle for them from the extremity of the earth. And look, they are coming, quickly, without hindrance! | 26 Therefore, he will raise a signal to the nations that are far away and whistle for them from the extremity of the earth. And look, they are coming, quickly, without hindrance! |
27 None shall be weary nor stumble among them; none shall slumber nor sleep; neither shall the girdle of their loins be loosed, nor the latchet of their shoes be broken.
27 They will not hunger nor grow weary nor slumber nor sleep, nor will they loosen their belts from their waist, nor will the thongs of their sandals be broken; | 27 They will not hunger nor grow weary nor slumber nor sleep, nor will they loosen their belts from their waist, nor will the thongs of their sandals be broken; |
28 Whose arrows are sharp, and all their bows bent, their horses’ hoofs shall be counted like flint, and their wheels like a whirlwind.
28 Whose arrows are sharp, and their bows bent; the hooves of their horses were considered to be like solid rock, the wheels of their chariots to be like a storm. | 28 Whose arrows are sharp, and their bows bent; the hooves of their horses were considered to be like solid rock, the wheels of their chariots to be like a storm. |
29 Their roaring shall be like a lion, they shall roar like young lions: yes, they shall roar, and lay hold of the prey, and shall carry it away safe, and none shall deliver it.
29 They rush like lions but stand by like a lion’s cub, and he will seize and roar like a beast, and he will throw them out, and there will be no one who will rescue. | 29 They rush like lions but stand by like a lion’s cub, and he will seize and roar like a beast, and he will throw them out, and there will be no one who will rescue. |
30 And in that day they shall roar against them like the roaring of the sea; and if one look to the land, behold darkness and sorrow, and the light is darkened in the heavens of it.
30 And because of them on that day, he will roar like the sound of a surging sea. And they will look to the land, and look, severe darkness in their distress. | 30 And because of them on that day, he will roar like the sound of a surging sea. And they will look to the land, and look, severe darkness in their distress. |
