Chapter 32

AlexandrinusVaticanus

Song of Moses

1 “Give ear, Oh you heavens, and I will speak; and hear, Oh earth, the words of my mouth.

1 Take heed, Oh sky, and I will speak, and let the earth hear words from my mouth. 1 Take heed, Oh sky, and I will speak, and let the earth hear words from my mouth.

2 My doctrine shall drop as the rain, my speech shall distill as the dew, as the light rain on the tender herb, and as the showers on the grass.

2 Let my sayings be expected like rain, and let my words come down like dew, like a thunderstorm on crab grass, and like a snowstorm on lawn. 2 Let my sayings be expected like rain, and let my words come down like dew, like a thunderstorm on crab grass, and like a snowstorm on lawn.

3 Because I will publish the name of Yahweh; ascribe greatness to our God.

3 Because I have called the name of the Lord; give greatness to our God! 3 Because I have called the name of the Lord; give greatness to our God!

4 He is the Rock, his work is perfect; for all his ways are judgment; a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he.

4 God; his works are true, and all his ways are justice. A faithful God, and there is no injustice, a righteous and virtuous Lord; 4 God; his works are true, and all his ways are justice. A faithful God, and there is no injustice, a righteous and virtuous Lord;

5 They have corrupted themselves, their spot is not the spot of his children; they are a perverse and crooked generation.

5 Guilty children, not his, have sinned; a generation, crooked and perverse. 5 Guilty children, not his, have sinned; a generation, crooked and perverse.

6 Do you thus requite Yahweh, Oh foolish people and unwise? Is not he your father who has bought you? Hasn’t he made you, and established you?

6 ταῦτα κυρίῳ ἀνταποδίδοτε οὕτω, λαὸς μωρὸς καὶ οὐχὶ σοφός;
οὐκ αὐτὸς οὗτός σου πατὴρ ἐκτήσατό σὲ καὶ ἐποίησέν σὲ καὶ ἔκτισέν σε;
6 ταῦτα Κυρίῳ ἀνταποδίδοτε;
οὕτω λαὸς μωρὸς καὶ οὐχὶ σοφός;
οὐκ αὐτὸς οὗτός σου πατὴρ ἐκτήσατό σε καὶ ἐποίησέ σε καὶ ἔπλασέ σε;
6 Thus do you repay these things to the Lord, Oh foolish and not wise people? Didn’t he himself, your father, acquire you and make you and create you? 6 Thus do you repay these things to the Lord, Oh foolish and not wise people? Didn’t he himself, your father, acquire you and make you and create you?

7 Remember the days of old, consider the years of many generations; ask your father, and he will show you; your elders, and they will tell you.

7 Remember days of old; consider years of a generation of generations; ask your father, and he will inform you, your elders, and they will tell you. 7 Remember days of old; consider years of a generation of generations; ask your father, and he will inform you, your elders, and they will tell you.

8 When the most High divided to the nations their inheritance, when he separated the sons of Adam, he set the bounds of the people according to the number of the sons of Israēl.

8 When the Most High was allocating nations, as he scattered Adam’s sons, he fixed borders of nations according to the number of God’s angels, 8 When the Most High was allocating nations, as he scattered Adam’s sons, he fixed borders of nations according to the number of God’s angels,

9 For Yahweh’s portion is his people; Jacōb is the lot of his inheritance.

9 and his people Jacōb became the Lord’s portion, Israēl a measured part of his inheritance. 9 and his people Jacōb became the Lord’s portion, Israēl a measured part of his inheritance.

10 He found him in a desert land, and in the waste howling wilderness; he led him about, he instructed him, he kept him as the apple of his eye.

10 He sustained him in a deserted land, in thirst of heat, in an arid place; he encircled him and educated him and guarded him as the pupil of his eye. 10 He sustained him in a deserted land, in thirst of heat, in an arid place; he encircled him and educated him and guarded him as the pupil of his eye.

11 As an eagle stirs up her nest, flutters over her young, spreads abroad her wings, takes them, bears them on her wings.

11 As an eagle protects his brood, and he yearned for his young; spreading his wings, he received them and took them up on his back; 11 As an eagle protects his brood, and he yearned for his young; spreading his wings, he received them and took them up on his back;

12 So Yahweh alone did lead him, and there was no strange god with him.

12 the Lord alone was leading them, and no foreign god was with them. 12 the Lord alone was leading them, and no foreign god was with them.

13 He made him ride on the high places of the earth, that he might eat the increase of the fields; and he made him to suck honey out of the rock, and oil out of the flinty rock;

13 He brought them up onto the strength of the land, he fed them with produce of the fields; they sucked honey from a rock and olive oil from solid rock, 13 He brought them up onto the strength of the land, he fed them with produce of the fields; they sucked honey from a rock and olive oil from solid rock,

14 butter of kine, and milk of sheep, with fat of lambs, and rams of the breed of Bashan, and goats, with the fat of kidneys of wheat; and you drank the pure blood of the grape.

14 butter of cows and milk of sheep, with fat of lambs and rams; of the sons of bulls and of goats, with fat of kidneys of wheat–and they drank wine, blood of grape. 14 butter of cows and milk of sheep, with fat of lambs and rams; of the sons of bulls and of goats, with fat of kidneys of wheat–and they drank wine, blood of grape.

15 But Jeshurun became fat, and kicked; you have grown fat, you have grown thick, you are covered with fatness; then he forsook God who made him, and lightly esteemed the Rock of his salvation.

15 And Jacōb ate and was filled, and the beloved one kicked. He grew fat; he became heavy; he became broad! And he abandoned God who made him, and he departed from God his saviour. 15 And Jacōb ate and was filled, and the beloved one kicked. He grew fat; he became heavy; he became broad! And he abandoned God who made him, and he departed from God his saviour.

16 They provoked him to jealousy with strange gods, with abominations they provoked him to anger.

16 They provoked me with foreign things; by their abominations they embittered me. 16 They provoked me with foreign things; by their abominations they embittered me.

17 They sacrificed to demons, not to Eloah; to gods whom they didn’t know, to new gods that came newly up, whom your fathers didn’t fear.

17 They sacrificed to demons and not to God, to gods they didn’t know. New, recent ones have come, whom their fathers didn’t know. 17 They sacrificed to demons and not to God, to gods they didn’t know. New, recent ones have come, whom their fathers didn’t know.

18 Of the Rock that fathered you you are unmindful, and have forgotten El who formed you.

18 You abandoned God who bore you, and you forgot God who nourished you. 18 You abandoned God who bore you, and you forgot God who nourished you.

19 And when Yahweh saw it, he abhorred them, because of the provoking of his sons, and of his daughters.

19 And the Lord saw it and was jealous, and he was provoked on account of the wrath of his sons and daughters. 19 And the Lord saw it and was jealous, and he was provoked on account of the wrath of his sons and daughters.

20 And he said, ‘I will hide my face from them, I will see what their end shall be; for they are a very deceitful generation, children in whom is no faith.

20 And he said, I will turn away my face from them, and I will show what will happen to them at the end, because it is a perverted generation, sons who have no faithfullness in them. 20 And he said, I will turn away my face from them, and I will show what will happen to them at the end, because it is a perverted generation, sons who have no faithfullness in them.

21 They have moved me to jealousy with what is not El; they have provoked me to anger with their vanities; and I will move them to jealousy with those which are not a people; I will provoke them to anger with a foolish nation.

21 They made me jealous with what is not a god, provoked me with their idols. And I will make them jealous with what is not a nation, provoke them with a foolish nation. 21 They made me jealous with what is not a god, provoked me with their idols. And I will make them jealous with what is not a nation, provoke them with a foolish nation.

22 For a fire is kindled in my anger, and shall burn to the lowest hell, and shall consume the earth with her increase, and set on fire the foundations of the mountains.

22 Because a fire has been ignited from my anger and will burn as far as Hades below; it will devour land and its produce and will burn up the foundations of mountains. 22 Because a fire has been ignited from my anger and will burn as far as Hades below; it will devour land and its produce and will burn up the foundations of mountains.

23 I will heap disasters on them; I will spend my arrows on them.

23 I will gather evils against them and will expend my arrows against them. 23 I will gather evils against them and will expend my arrows against them.

24 They shall be burned with hunger, and devoured with burning heat, and with bitter destruction; I will also send the teeth of beasts on them, with the poison of serpents of the dust.

24 While they are being wasted by famine and are eaten by birds– and tetanus effects beyond cure. I will send teeth of beasts against them, with anger of creatures that drag on the ground. 24 While they are being wasted by famine and are eaten by birds– and tetanus effects beyond cure. I will send teeth of beasts against them, with anger of creatures that drag on the ground.

25 The sword without, and terror within, shall destroy both the young man and the virgin, the suckling also with the man of gray hairs.

25 From outside, a dagger shall bereave them of children , and from the bedrooms, fear; young man together with virgin, nursing child with one grown old. 25 From outside, a dagger shall bereave them of children , and from the bedrooms, fear; young man together with virgin, nursing child with one grown old.

26 I said, “I would scatter them into corners, I would make the remembrance of them to cease from among men.”

26 I said, I will disperse them; indeed, I will cause their memory to cease from among men, 26 I said, I will disperse them; indeed, I will cause their memory to cease from among men,

27 Were it not that I feared the wrath of the enemy, lest their adversaries should behave themselves strangely, and lest they should say, “Our hand is high, and Yahweh hasn’t done all this.”

27 were it not for wrath of the enemies so that they may not last long and so that their adversaries not joining in attacking, don’t let them say, “Our hand is high, and it was not the Lord who did all these things.” 27 were it not for wrath of the enemies so that they may not last long and so that their adversaries not joining in attacking, don’t let them say, “Our hand is high, and it was not the Lord who did all these things.”

28 For they are a nation void of counsel, neither is there any understanding in them.

28 Because it is a nation that has lost counsel, and there is no understanding in them. 28 Because it is a nation that has lost counsel, and there is no understanding in them.

29 Oh that they were wise, that they understood this, that they would consider their latter end!

29 They had no sense to understand these things. Let them accept them for the time to come. 29 They had no sense to understand these things. Let them accept them for the time to come.

30 How should one chase 1000, and two put 10,000 to flight, except their Rock had sold them, and Yahweh had shut them up?

30 πῶς διώξεται εἷς χιλίους καὶ δύο μετακινήσουσιν μυριάδας, εἰ μὴ θεὸς ἀπέδοτο αὐτοὺς καὶ κύριος παρέδωκεν αὐτούς; 30 πῶς διώξεται εἷς χιλίους καὶ δύο μετακινήσουσι μυριάδας, εἰ μὴ Θεὸς ἀπέδοτο αὐτοὺς καὶ Κύριος παρέδωκεν αὐτούς;
30 How shall one pursue thousands and two remove myriads unless God sold them and the Lord delivered them up? 30 How shall one pursue thousands and two remove myriads unless God sold them and the Lord delivered them up?

31 For their rock is not as our Rock, even our enemies themselves being judges.

31 Because our God is not like their gods, but our enemies are without understanding. 31 Because our God is not like their gods, but our enemies are without understanding.

32 For their vine is of the vine of Sodom, and of the fields of Gomorrah; their grapes are grapes of gall, their clusters are bitter.

32 For their grapevine is from the grapevine of Sodom, and their branch from Gomorra; their grape cluster is a cluster of bile; it is a bunch of bitterness to them; 32 For their grapevine is from the grapevine of Sodom, and their branch from Gomorra; their grape cluster is a cluster of bile; it is a bunch of bitterness to them;

33 Their wine is the poison of dragons, and the cruel venom of asps.

33 their wine is the anger of dragons, and the anger of incurable asps. 33 their wine is the anger of dragons, and the anger of incurable asps.

34 Is not this laid up in store with me, and sealed up among my treasures?

34 οὐκ ἰδοὺ ταῦτα συνῆκται παρ’ ἐμοὶ καὶ ἐσφράγισται ἐν τοῖς θησαυροῖς μου; 34 οὐκ ἰδοὺ ταῦτα συνῆκται παρ’ ἐμοὶ καὶ ἐσφράγισται ἐν τοῖς θησαυροῖς μου;
34 Look! haven’t these things been gathered with me and sealed up in my treasuries? 34 Look! haven’t these things been gathered with me and sealed up in my treasuries?

35 To me belongs vengeance, and recompense; their foot shall slide in due time; for the day of their calamity is at hand, and the things that shall come on them make haste.’

35 In a day of vengeance, I will repay, in a time when their foot slips, because the day of their destruction is near and things prepared for you are present. 35 In a day of vengeance, I will repay, in a time when their foot slips, because the day of their destruction is near and things prepared for you are present.

36 For Yahweh shall judge his people, and repent himself for his servants, when he sees that their power is gone, and there is none shut up, or left.

36 Because the Lord will judge his people and be comforted over his slaves. For he saw them paralyzed, both failed under attack and enfeebled. 36 Because the Lord will judge his people and be comforted over his slaves. For he saw them paralyzed, both failed under attack and enfeebled.

37 And he shall say, ‘Where are their gods, their rock in whom they trusted,

37 καὶ εἶπεν κύριος ποῦ εἰσιν οἱ θεοὶ αὐτῶν, ἐφ’ οἷς ἐπεποίθεισαν ἐπ’ αὐτοῖς, 37 καὶ εἶπε Κύριος· ποῦ εἰσιν οἱ θεοὶ αὐτῶν, ἐφ’ οἷς ἐπεποίθεισαν ἐπ’ αὐτοῖς;
37 And the Lord said, Where are their gods, they in whom they trusted, 37 And the Lord said, Where are their gods, they in whom they trusted,

38 which ate the fat of their sacrifices, and drank the wine of their drink offerings? Let them rise up and help you, and be your protection.

38 ὧν τὸ στέαρ τῶν θυσιῶν αὐτῶν ἠσθίετε καὶ ἐπίνετε τὸν οἶνον τῶν σπονδῶν αὐτῶν;
38 ὧν τὸ στέαρ τῶν θυσιῶν αὐτῶν ἠσθίετε καὶ ἐπίνετε τὸν οἶνον τῶν σπονδῶν αὐτῶν;
38 the fat of whose sacrifices you were eating and were drinking the wine of their libations? Let them rise up and help you, and let them be protectors for you. 38 the fat of whose sacrifices you were eating and were drinking the wine of their libations? Let them rise up and help you, and let them be protectors for you.

39 See now that I, even I, am he, and there is no god with me; I kill, and I make alive; I wound, and I heal; neither is there any that can deliver out of my hand.

39 See, see that I am, and there is no god except me. I will kill, and I will make alive; I will strike, and I will heal, and there is no one who will deliver from my hands. 39 See, see that I am, and there is no god except me. I will kill, and I will make alive; I will strike, and I will heal, and there is no one who will deliver from my hands.

40 For I lift up my hand to heaven, and say, I live forever.

40 Because I will lift up my hand to the sky, and I will swear by my right hand, and I will say; I live forever, 40 Because I will lift up my hand to the sky, and I will swear by my right hand, and I will say; I live forever,

41 If I sharpen my glittering sword, and my hand takes hold on judgment; I will render vengeance to my enemies, and will reward those who hate me.

41 because I will sharpen my dagger like lightning, and my hand will take hold on judgment, and I will repay my enemies with justice, and those who hate me I will repay. 41 because I will sharpen my dagger like lightning, and my hand will take hold on judgment, and I will repay my enemies with justice, and those who hate me I will repay.

42 I will make my arrows drunk with blood, and my sword shall devour flesh; and that with the blood of the slain and of the captives, from the beginning of revenges on the enemy.’

42 I will make my arrows drunk with blood; and my dagger shall devour flesh; with the blood of the wounded and of captives, from the head of the leaders of the enemies. 42 I will make my arrows drunk with blood; and my dagger shall devour flesh; with the blood of the wounded and of captives, from the head of the leaders of the enemies.

43 Rejoice, you nations, with his people; for he will avenge the blood of his servants, and will render vengeance to his adversaries, and will be merciful to his land, and to his people.”

43 Be glad, Oh skies, with him, and let all the sons of God worship him. Be glad, Oh nations, with his people, and let all the angels of God grow strong for him. For he will avenge the blood of his sons and take revenge and repay the enemies with justice, and he will repay those who hate, and the Lord shall cleanse the land of his people.

44 And Moses came and spoke all the words of this song in the ears of the people, he, and Joshua the son of Nun.

44 And Moses wrote this song in that day and taught it to the sons of Israēl. And Moses entered and spoke all the words of this law in the ears of the people, he and Jēsous the son of Nauē. 44 And Moses wrote this song in that day and taught it to the sons of Israēl. And Moses entered and spoke all the words of this law in the ears of the people, he and Jēsous the son of Nauē.

45 And Moses made an end of speaking all these words to all Israēl.

45 And Moses finished speaking to all Israēl, 45 And Moses finished speaking to all Israēl,

46 And he said to them, “Set your hearts to all the words which I testify among you this day, which you shall command your children to observe to do, all the words of this law.

46 and he said to them; “Pay attention with your heart to all these words that I am testifying against you today, which things you shall command your sons, to guard and to do all the words of this law. 46 and he said to them; “Pay attention with your heart to all these words that I am testifying against you today, which things you shall command your sons, to guard and to do all the words of this law.

47 For it is not a vain thing for you; because it is your life; and through this thing you shall prolong your days in the land, to which you go over Jordan to possess.”

47 Because this is not an empty word for you, because it is your life, and through this word you shall live long in the land into which you are crossing over the Jordan there to inherit it.” 47 Because this is not an empty word for you, because it is your life, and through this word you shall live long in the land into which you are crossing over the Jordan there to inherit it.”

48 And Yahweh spoke to Moses that very same day, saying,

48 And the Lord spoke to Moses on this day, saying, 48 And the Lord spoke to Moses on this day, saying,

49 “Get up into this mountain Abarim, to mount Nebo, which is in the land of Moab, that is over against Jericho; and behold the land of Canaan, which I give to the sons of Israēl for a possession.

49 “Ascend the mountain, this Abarim, Mount Nabau, which is in the land of Mōab, across from Jerichō, and view the land of Chanaan, which I am giving to the sons of Israēl as a possession, 49 “Ascend the mountain, this Abarim, Mount Nabau, which is in the land of Mōab, across from Jerichō, and view the land of Chanaan, which I am giving to the sons of Israēl as a possession,

50 And die in the mount to which you go up, and be gathered to your people; as Aaron your brother died in mount Hor, and was gathered to his people.

50 and die on the mountain on which you are ascending there, and be added to your people as your brother Aarōn died on the mountain Ōr and was added to his people, 50 and die on the mountain on which you are ascending there, and be added to your people as your brother Aarōn died on the mountain Ōr and was added to his people,

51 Because you trespassed against me among the sons of Israēl at the waters of Meribah-Kedesh, in the wilderness of Zin; because you didn’t sanctify me in the midst of the sons of Israēl.

51 because you both disobeyed my word among the sons of Israēl at the water of dispute at Kadēs in the wilderness of Sin, because you both didn’t sanctify me among the sons of Israēl. 51 because you both disobeyed my word among the sons of Israēl at the water of dispute at Kadēs in the wilderness of Sin, because you both didn’t sanctify me among the sons of Israēl.

52 Yet you shall see the land before you; but you shall not go to that place to the land which I give the sons of Israēl.”

52 Because you shall view the land before you, but you shall not enter there. 52 Because you shall view the land before you, but you shall not enter there.
