στατίωνα
ἔχω.
|
As I was fasting and seated on a certain mountain, and giving thanks to the Lord for all that He had done unto me, I see the shepherd seated by me and saying; "Why had you come hither in the early morn?" "Because, Sir," say I, "I am keeping a station."

"What," says he, "is a station?" "I am fasting, Sir," say I. "And what," says he, "is this fast [that you are fasting]?" "As I was accustomed, Sir," say I, "so I fast."

κυρίῳ,
οὐδέ
ἐστιν
νηστεία
αὕτη
ἡ
ἀνωφελής,
ἣν
νηστεύετε
αὐτῷ.
Διατί,

κύριε,

λέγεις;
Λέγω
σοι,
φησίν,
ὅτι
οὐκ
ἔστιν
αὕτη
νηστεία,
ἣν
δοκεῖτε
νηστεύειν·
ἀλλ᾿
ἐγώ
σὲ
διδάξω,
τί
ἐστι
νηστεία
δεκτὴ
καὶ
πλήρης
τῷ
κυρίῳ.
Ἄκουε,
φησίν.
|
"You know not," says he, "how to fast unto the Lord, neither is this a fast, this unprofitable fast which you make unto Him." "why, Sir," say I, "sayest you this?" "I tell you," says he, "that this is not a fast, wherein you think to fast; but I will teach you what is a complete fast and acceptable to the Lord. Listen," says he;

"God desires not such a vain fast; for by so fasting unto God you shall do nothing for righteousness. But fast you [unto God] such a fast as this;

ἀλλὰ
δούλευσον
τῷ
κυρίῳ
ἐν
καθαρᾷ
καρδίᾳ·
τήρησον
τὰς
ἐντολὰς

πορευόμενος

τοῖς
προστάγμασιν
αὐτοῦ
καὶ
μηδεμία
ἐπιθυμία
πονηρὰ
ἀναβήτω
ἐν
τῇ
καρδίᾳ
σου·
πίστευσον
δὲ
τῷ
θεῷ,
ὅτι,
ἐὰν
ταῦτα
ἐργάσῃ
καὶ
φοβηθῇς
αὐτὸν
καὶ
ἐγκρατεύσῃ
ἀπὸ
παντὸς
πονηροῦ
πράγματος,
ζήσῃ
τῷ
θεῷ·
καὶ
ταῦτα
ἐὰν
ἐργάσῃ,
μεγάλην
νηστείαν
ποιήσεις
καὶ
δεκτὴν
τῷ
θεῷ.
|
do no wickedness in your life, and serve the Lord with a pure heart; observe His commandments and walk in His ordinances, and let no evil desire rise up in your heart; but believe God. Then, if you shall do these things, and fear Him, and control yourself from every evil deed, you shall live unto God; and if you do these things, you shall accomplish a great fast, and one acceptable to God.

καὶ
ἐκλεξάμενος

εὐάρεστον
ἔντιμον,
προσεκαλέσατο
αὐτὸν
καὶ
λέγει
αὐτῷ·
Λάβε
τὸν
ἀμπελῶνα
τοῦτον,
ὃν
ἐφύτευσα,
καὶ
χαράκωσον
αὐτόν,
ἕως
ἔρχομαι,
καὶ
ἕτερον
δὲ
μὴ
ποιήσῃς
τῷ
ἀμπελῶνι·
καὶ
ταύτην
μου
τὴν
ἐντολὴν
φύλαξον,
καὶ
ἐλεύθερος
ἔσῃ
παρ᾿
ἐμοί.
ἐξῆλθε
δὲ
ὁ
δεσπότης
τοῦ
δούλου
εἰς
τὴν
ἀποδημίαν.

A certain man had an estate, and many slaves, and a portion of his estate he planted as a vineyard; and choosing out a certain slave who was trusty and well-pleasing (and) held in honor, he called him to him and says unto him; "Take this vineyard [which I have planted], and fence it [till I come], but do nothing else to the vineyard. Now keep this my commandment, and you shall be free in my house." Then the master of the servant went away to travel abroad.

When then he had gone away, the servant took and fenced the vineyard; and having finished the fencing of the vineyard, he noticed that the vineyard was full of weeds.

λέγων·
Ταύτην

ἐντολὴν
τοῦ
κυρίου
τετέλεκα·
σκάψω
λοιπὸν
τὸν
ἀμπελῶνα
τοῦτον,

ἔσται
εὐπρεπέστερος
ἐσκαμμένος,
καὶ
βοτάνας
μὴ
ἔχων
δώσει
καρπὸν
πλείονα,
μὴ
πνιγόμενος
ὑπὸ
τῶν
βοτανῶν.
λαβὼν
ἔσκαψε
τὸν
ἀμπελῶνα
καὶ
πάσας
τὰς
βοτάνας
τὰς
οὔσας
ἐν
τῷ
ἀμπελῶνι
ἐξέτιλλε.
καὶ
ἐγένετο
ὁ
ἀμπελὼν
ἐκεῖνος
εὐπρεπέστατος
καὶ
εὐθαλής,
μὴ
ἔχων
βοτάνας
πνιγούσας
αὐτόν.
|
So he reasoned within himself, saying, "This command of my lord I have carried out I will next dig this vineyard, and it shall be neater when it is digged; and when it has no weeds it will yield more fruit, because not choked by the weeds." He took and digged the vineyard, and all the weeds that were in the vineyard he plucked up. And that vineyard became very neat and flourishing, when it had no weeds to choke it.

λίαν

After a time the master of the servant [and of the estate] came, and he went into the vineyard. And seeing the vineyard fenced neatly, and digged as well, and [all] the weeds plucked up, and the vines flourishing, he rejoiced [exceedingly] at what his servant had done.
|

εὗρε
γεγονότα.
κἀκεῖνοι
συνεχάρησαν
τῷ
δούλῳ
ἐπὶ
τῇ
μαρτυρίᾳ
ᾗ
ἐμαρτύρησεν
αὐτῷ
ὁ
δεσπότης.
|
So he called his beloved son, who was his heir, and the friends who were his advisers, and told them what he had commanded his servant, and how much he had found done. And they rejoiced with the servant at the testimony which his master had borne to him.
|

ἐλευθερίαν
ἐπηγγειλάμην,
ἐάν
μου
τὴν
ἐντολὴν
φυλάξῃ,

ἐνετειλάμην
αὐτῷ·
ἐφύλαξε
δέ
μου
τὴν
ἐντολὴν
καὶ
προσέθηκε
τῷ
ἀμπελῶνι
ἔργον
καλόν,
καὶ
ἐμοὶ
λίαν
ἤρεσεν.
ἀντὶ
τούτου
οὖν
τοῦ
ἔργου
οὗ
εἰργάσατο
θέλω
αὐτὸν
συγκληρονόμον
τῷ
υἱῷ
μου
ποιῆσαι,
ὅτι
τὸ
καλὸν
φρονήσας
οὐ
παρενεθυμήθη,
ἀλλ᾿
ἐτέλεσεν
αὐτό.
|
And he says to them; "I promised this servant his freedom, if he should keep the commandment which I commanded him; but he kept my commandment and did a good work besides to my vineyard, and pleased me greatly. For this work therefore which he has done, I desire to make him joint-heir with my son, because, when the good thought struck him, he did not neglect it, but fulfilled it."

In this purpose the son of the master agreed with him, that the servant should be made joint-heir with the son.

ἔπεμψεν
αὐτῷ

τοῦ
δείπνου
ἐδέσματα
πολλά.
λαβὼν

ἐδέσματα
τὰ
πεμφθέντα
αὐτῷ
παρὰ
τοῦ
δεσπότου
τὰ
ἀρκοῦντα
αὐτῷ
ἦρε,
τὰ
λοιπὰ
δὲ
τοῖς
συνδούλοις
αὐτοῦ
διέδωκεν.
|
After some few days, his master made a feast, and sent to him many dainties from the feast. But when the servant received [the dainties sent to him by the master], he took what was sufficient for him, and distributed the rest to his fellow servants.
|

ἐχάρησαν
καὶ
ἤρξαντο
εὔχεσθαι
ὑπὲρ
αὐτοῦ,

χάριν

παρὰ
τῷ
δεσπότῃ,
ὅτι
οὕτως
ἐχρήσατο
αὐτοῖς.
|
And his fellow-servants, when they received the dainties, rejoiced, and began to pray for him, that he might find greater favor with the master, because he had treated them so handsomely.
|

οἱ

μᾶλλον
συνευδόκησαν
γενέσθαι

συγκληρονόμον
τῷ
υἱῷ
αὐτοῦ.
|
All these things which had taken place his master heard, and again rejoiced greatly at his deed. So the master called together again his friends and his son, and announced to them the deed that he had done with regard to his dainties which he had received; and they still more approved of his resolve, that his servant should be made joint-heir with his son."

I say, "Sir, I understand not these parables, neither can I apprehend them, unless you explain them for me."

|
"I will explain everything to you," says he; "and will show you whatsoever things I shall speak with you. Keep the commandments of the Lord, and you shall be well-pleasing to God, and shall be enrolled among the number of them who keep His commandments.

φυλάσσων

ἐντολὰς
τοῦ
θεοῦ
προσθῇς

τὰς
λειτουργίας
ταύτας,
χαρήσῃ,
ἐὰν
τηρήσῃς
αὐτὰς
κατὰ
τὴν
ἐμὴν
ἐντολήν.
|
But if you do any good thing outside the commandment of God, you shall win for yourself more exceeding glory, and shall be more glorious in the sight of God than you wouldest otherwise have been. If then, while you keepest the commandments of God, you add these services likewise, you shall rejoice, if you observe them according to my commandment."

ἀγαθοποιήσεως,

προθυμίαν
ἔχουσιν.
|
I say to him, "Sir, whatsoever you commandest me, I will keep it; for I know that you are with me." "I will be with you," says he, "because you had so great zeal for doing good; yes, and I will be with all," says he, "whosoever have such zeal as this.

|
This fasting," says he, "if the commandments of the Lord are kept, is very good. This then is the way, that you shall keep this fast which you are about to observe].
|
6 πρῶτον
πάντων
φύλαξαι
ἀπὸ
παντὸς
ῥήματος
πονηροῦ
καὶ
πάσης
ἐπιθυμίας
πονηρᾶς
καὶ
καθάρισόν
σου
τὴν
καρδίαν
ἀπὸ
πάντων
τῶν
ματαιωμάτων
τοῦ
αἰῶνος
τούτου.
ἐὰν
ταῦτα
φυλάξῃς,
ἔσται
σοί
αὕτη
ἡ
νηστεία
τελεία.
|
First of all, keep yourself from every evil word and every evil desire, and purify your heart from all the vanities of this world. If you keep these things, this fast shall be perfect for you.
|

συνοψίσας

ποσότητα
τῆς
δαπάνης
ἐκείνης
τῆς
ἡμέρας
ἧς
ἔμελλες
ποιεῖν,
δώσεις
αὐτὸ
χήρᾳ
ἢ
ὀρφανῷ
ἢ
ὑστερουμένῳ,
καὶ
οὕτω
ταπεινοφρονήσεις,
ἵν᾿
ἐκ
τῆς
ταπεινοφροσύνης
σου
ὁ
εἰληφὼς
ἐμπλήσῃ
τὴν
ἑαυτοῦ
ψυχὴν
καὶ
εὔξηται
ὑπὲρ
σοῦ
πρὸς
τὸν
κύριον.
|
And thus shall you do. Having fulfilled what is written, on that day on which you fastest you shall taste nothing but bread and water; and from your meats, which you wouldest have eaten, you shall reckon up the amount of that day's expenditure, which you wouldest have incurred, and shall give it to a widow, or an orphan, or to one in want, and so shall you humble your soul, that he who has received from your humiliation may satisfy his own soul, and may pray for you to the Lord.

|
If then you shall so accomplish this fast, as I have commanded you, your sacrifice shall be acceptable in the sight of God, and this fasting shall be recorded; and the service so performed is beautiful and joyous and acceptable to the Lord.
|

These things you shall so observe, you and your children and your whole household; and, observing them, you shall be blessed; yes, and all those, who shall hear and observe them, shall be blessed, and whatsoever things they shall ask of the Lord, they shall receive."

I entreated him earnestly, that he would show me the parable of the estate, and of the master, and of the vineyard, and of the servant that fenced the vineyard, [and of the fence,] and of the weeds which were plucked up out of the vineyard, and of the son, and of the friends, the advisers. For I understood that all these things are a parable.

ἔσομαι
ἑωρακὼς
αὐτὰ
καὶ
μὴ
νοῶν,

ἐστιν·
ὡσαύτως

παραβολὰς
λαλήσῃς
καὶ
μὴ
ἐπιλύσῃς
μοι
αὐτάς,
εἰς

ἔσομαι
ἀκηκοώς

παρὰ

|
But he answered and said unto me; "You are exceedingly importunate in enquiries. You oughtest not," [says he,] "to make any enquiry at all; for if it be right that a thing be explained unto you, it shall be explained." I say to him; "Sir, whatsoever things you showest unto me and do not explain, I shall have seen them in vain, and without understanding what they are. In like manner also, if you speak parables to me and interpret them not, I shall have heard a thing in vain from you."

ἀργοὶ
πρὸς
τὴν
ἔντευξιν,
ἐκεῖνοι
διστάζουσιν
αἰτεῖσθαι
παρὰ
τοῦ
κυρίου·
|
But he again answered, and said unto me; "Whosoever," says he, "is a servant of God, and has his own Lord in his heart, asks understanding of Him, and receives it, and interprets every parable, and the words of the Lord which are spoken in parables are made known unto him. But as many as are sluggish and idle in intercession, these hesitate to ask of the Lord.

ἔντευξιν
καὶ
μὴ
ὢν
ἀργός,
διατί
οὐκ
αἰτῇ
παρὰ
τοῦ
κυρίου
σύνεσιν
καὶ
λαμβάνεις
παρ᾿
αὐτοῦ;
|
But the Lord is abundant in compassion, and gives to them who ask of Him without ceasing. But you who had been strengthened by the holy angel, and had received from him such (powers of intercession and are not idle, why do you not ask understanding of the Lord, and obtain it from Him)."

ἀνάγκην
ἔχω
σὲ
αἰτεῖσθαι
καὶ
σὲ
ἐπερωτᾶν·
σὺ
γάρ
μοι
δεικνύεις
πάντα
καὶ
λαλεῖς
μετ᾿
ἐμοῦ·
εἰ
δὲ
ἄτερ
σου
ἔβλεπον
ἢ
ἤκουον
αὐτά,
ἠρώτων
ἄν
τὸν
κύριον,
ἵνα
μοι
δηλωθῇ.
|
I say to him, "Sir, I that have you with me have (but) need to ask you and enquire of you; for you showest me all things, and speakest with me; but if I had seen or heard them apart from you I should have asked of the Lord, that they might be shown to me."

ἄρτι,
ὅτι
πανοῦργος
εἶ
καὶ
αὐθάδης,
ἐπερωτῶν
τὰς
ἐπιλύσεις
τῶν
παραβολῶν.
ἐπειδὴ
δὲ
οὕτω
παράμονος
εἶ,
ἐπιλύσω
σοί
τὴν
παραβολὴν
τοῦ
ἀγροῦ
καὶ
τῶν
λοιπῶν
τῶν
ἀκολούθων
πάντων,
ἵνα
γνωστὰ
πᾶσι
ποιήσῃς
αὐτά.
ἄκουε
νῦν,
φησί,
καὶ
σύνιε
αὐτά.
|
"I told you just now," says he, "that you are unscrupulous and importunate, in enquiring for the interpretations of the parables. But since you are so obstinate, I will interpret to you the parable of the estate and all the accompaniments thereof, that you may make them known unto all. Hear now," says he, "and understand them.

θεοῦ
ἐστιν·
αἱ

ἄμπελοι

λαὸς
οὗτός
ἐστιν,

αὐτὸς
ἐφύτευσεν·
|
The estate is this world, and the lord of the estate is He that created all things, and set them in order, and endowed them with power; and the servant is the Son of God, and the vines are this people whom He Himself planted;

συγκρατοῦντες

λαὸν
αὐτοῦ·
αἱ

ἐκ
τοῦ
ἀμπελῶνος
ἀνομίαι
εἰσὶ
τῶν
δούλων
τοῦ
θεοῦ·
τὰ
δὲ
ἐδέσματα,
ἃ
ἔπεμψεν
αὐτῷ
ἐκ
τοῦ
δείπνου,
αἱ
ἐντολαί
εἰσιν,
ἃς
ἔδωκε
τῷ
λαῷ
αὐτοῦ
διὰ
τοῦ
υἱοῦ
αὐτοῦ·
οἱ
δὲ
φίλοι
καὶ
σύμβουλοι
οἱ
ἅγιοι
ἄγγελοι
οἱ
πρῶτοι
κτισθέντες·
ἡ
δὲ
ἀποδημία
τοῦ
δεσπότου
ὁ
χρόνος
ὁ
περισσεύων
εἰς
τὴν
παρουσίαν
αὐτοῦ.

and the fences are the [holy] angels of the Lord who keep together His people; and the weeds, which are plucked up from the vineyard, are the transgressions of the servants of God; and the dainties which He sent to him from the feast are the commandments which He gave to His people through His Son; and the friends and advisers are the holy angels which were first created; and the absence of the master is the time which remains over until His coming."

μεγάλως
καὶ
θαυμαστῶς
πάντα
ἐστὶ
καὶ
ἐνδόξως
πάντα
ἔχει.
μὴ
οὖν,
φημί,
ἐγὼ
ἠδυνάμην
ταῦτα
νοῆσαι;
οὐδὲ
ἕτερος
τῶν
ἀνθρώπων,
κἂν
λίαν
συνετὸς
ᾖ
τις,
οὐ
δύναται
νοῆσαι
αὐτά.
ἔτι,
φημί,
κύριε,
δήλωσόν
μοι,
ὃ
μέλλω
σὲ
ἐπερωτᾶν.
|
I say to him; "Sir, great and marvelous are all things and all things are glorious; was it likely then," say I, "that I could have apprehended them?" "No, nor can any other man, though he be full of understanding, apprehend them." "Yet again, Sir," say I, "explain to me what I am about to enquire of you."

|
"Say on," he says, "if you desirest anything." "Why, Sir,]" say I, "is the Son of God represented in the parable in the guise of a servant?"

|
"Listen," said he; "the Son of God is not represented in the guise of a servant, but is represented in great power and lordship." "How, Sir?" say I; "I comprehend not."

ἀμπελῶνα
ἐφύτευσε,
τοῦτ᾿
ἔστι
τὸν
λαὸν
ἔκτισε
καὶ
παρέδωκε
τῷ
υἱῷ

υἱὸς
κατέστησε
τοὺς
ἀγγέλους
ἐπ᾿
αὐτοὺς
τοῦ
συντηρεῖν
αὐτούς·
καὶ
αὐτὸς
τὰς
ἁμαρτίας

ἐκαθάρισε
πολλὰ
κοπιάσας
καὶ
πολλοὺς
κόπους
ἀνηντληκώς·
οὐδεὶς
γὰρ
ἀμπελὼν
δύναται
σκαφῆναι
ἄτερ
κόπου
ἢ
μόχθου.
|
"Because," says he, "God planted the vineyard, that is, He created the people, and delivered them over to His Son. And the Son placed the angels in charge of them, to watch over them; and the Son Himself cleansed their sins, by laboring much and enduring many toils; for no one can dig without toil or labor.

ἁμαρτίας

λαοῦ
ἔδειξεν
αὐτοῖς
τὰς
τρίβους
τῆς
ζωῆς,
δοὺς
αὐτοῖς
τὸν
νόμον,
ὃν
ἔλαβε
παρὰ
τοῦ
πατρὸς
αὐτοῦ.
|
Having Himself then cleansed the sins of His people, He showed them the paths of life, giving them the law which He received from His Father. You see," says he, "that He is Himself Lord of the people, having received all power from His Father.

ἀγγέλους
περὶ
τῆς
κληρονομίας

|
But how that the lord took his son and the glorious angels as advisers concerning the inheritance of the servant, listen.

κτίσαν
πᾶσαν

κτίσιν,
κατῴκισεν
ὁ
θεὸς
εἰς
σάρκα.
ἣν
ἠβούλετο·
αὕτη
οὖν
ἡ
σάρξ,
ἐν
ᾗ
κατῴκησε
τὸ
πνεῦμα
τὸ
ἅγιον,
ἐδούλευσε
τῷ
πνεύματι
καλῶς
ἐν
σεμνότητι
καὶ
ἁγνείᾳ
πορευθεῖσα,
μηδὲν
ὅλως
μιάνασα
τὸ
πνεῦμα.

The Holy Pre-existent Spirit. Which created the whole creation, God made to dwell in flesh that He desired. This flesh, therefore, in which the Holy Spirit dwelt, was subject unto the Spirit, walking honorably in holiness and purity, without in any way defiling the Spirit.

συγκοπιάσασαν
τῷ
πνεύματι
καὶ
συνεργήσασαν
ἐν
παντὶ
πράγματι,
ἰσχυρῶς
καὶ
ἀνδρείως
ἀναστραφεῖσαν,
μετὰ
τοῦ
πνεύματος
τοῦ
ἁγίου
εἵλατο
κοινωνόν·
ἤρεσε
γὰρ
ἡ
πορεία
τῆς
σαρκὸς
ταύτης,
ὅτι
οὐκ
ἐμιάνθη
ἐπὶ
τῆς
γῆς
ἔχουσα
τὸ
πνεῦμα
τὸ
ἅγιον.

When then it had lived honorably in chastity, and had labored with the Spirit, and had cooperated with it in everything, behaving itself boldly and bravely, He chose it as a partner with the Holy Spirit; for the career of this flesh pleased [the Lord], seeing that, as possessing the Holy Spirit, it was not defiled upon the earth.

μισθὸν
τῆς
δουλείας
αὐτῆς
ἀπολωλεκέναι·
πᾶσα
γὰρ
σὰρξ
ἀπολήψεται
μισθὸν
ἡ
εὑρεθεῖσα
ἀμίαντος
καὶ
ἄσπιλος
ἐν
ᾗ
τὸ
πνεῦμα
τὸ
ἅγιον
κατῴκησεν.

He therefore took the son as adviser and the glorious angels also, that this flesh too, having served the Spirit unblamably, might have some place of sojourn, and might not seem to hare lost the reward for its service; for all flesh, which is found undefiled and unspotted, wherein the Holy Spirit dwelt, shall receive a reward.

|
Now you had the interpretation of this parable also."
|

ἐπίλυσιν
ἀκούσας.
Ἄκουε
νῦν,
φησί·
τὴν
σάρκα
σου
ταύτην
φύλασσε
καθαρὰν
καὶ
ἀμίαντον,
ἵνα
τὸ
πνεῦμα
τὸ
κατοικοῦν
ἐν
αὐτῇ
μαρτυρήσῃ
αὐτῇ
καὶ
δικαιωθῇ
σου
ἡ
σάρξ.
|
"I was right glad, Sir," say I, "to hear this interpretation." "Listen now," says he, "Keep this your flesh pure and undefiled, that the Spirit which dwells in it may bear witness to it, and your flesh may be justified.
|

φθαρτὴν
εἶναι
καὶ
παραχρήσῃ
αὐτῇ

μιάνῃς

σάρκα
σου,
μιανεῖς
καὶ
τὸ
πνεῦμα
τὸ
ἅγιον·
ἐὰν
δὲ
μιάνῃς
τὴν
σάρκα,
οὐ
ζήσῃ.
|
See that it never enter into your heart that this flesh of your is perishable, and so you abuse it in some defilement. [For] if you defile your flesh, you shall defile the Holy Spirit also; but if you defile the flesh, you shall not live."

Περὶ
τῶν
προτέρων,
φησίν,
ἀγνοημάτων
τῷ
θεῷ
μόνῳ
δυνατὸν
ἴασιν
δοῦναι,
αὐτοῦ
γάρ
ἐστι
πᾶσα
ἐξουσία,
|
"But if, Sir," say I, "there has been any ignorance in times past, before these words were heard, how shall a man who has defiled his flesh be saved?" "For the former deeds of ignorance," says he, "God alone has power to give healing; for all authority is His.

ἀμφότερα
γὰρ
κοινά
ἐστι
καὶ
ἄτερ
ἀλλήλων
μιανθῆναι

δύναται.
ἀμφότερα
οὖν
καθαρὰ
φύλασσε,
καὶ
ζήσῃ
τῷ
θεῷ.
|
[But now keep yourself, and the Lord Almighty, Who is full of compassion, will give healing for your former deeds of ignorance,] if henceforth you defile not your flesh, neither the Spirit; for both share in common, and the one cannot be defiled without the other. Therefore keep both pure, and you shall live unto God."
