The Tongue

Don’t let many of you become teachers, my brothers, knowing that we will receive a greater judgment. Don’t let many of you become teachers, my brothers, knowing that we will receive a greater judgment.
For we all stumble many times. If anyone doesn’t stumble in speaking, he is a mature man, able to bridle the whole body too. For we all stumble many times. If anyone doesn’t stumble in speaking, he is a mature man, able to bridle the whole body too.
Look also at the ships, though they are so great and are driven by strong winds, are still guided by a very small rudder wherever the inclination of the pilot directs. Look also at the ships, though they are so great and are driven by strong winds, are still guided by a very small rudder wherever the inclination of the pilot directs.
So also the tongue is a small member, and yet it boasts of great things. Look how great a forest is ignited by such a small fire! So also the tongue is a small member, and yet it boasts of great things. Look how great a forest is ignited by such a small fire!
And the tongue is a fire, the world of iniquity; the tongue is set among our members as that which defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of our nature, and is set on fire by Gehenna. And the tongue is a fire, the world of iniquity; thus the tongue is set among our members as that which defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of our nature, and is set on fire by Gehenna.
For every species of beasts and birds, of reptiles and marine creatures, is tamed and has been tamed by the human race. For every species of beasts and birds, of reptiles and marine creatures, is tamed and has been tamed by the human race.
But no one is able to tame the tongue of men; it is an unstable evil and full of fatal poison. But no one is able to tame the tongue of men; it is an unstable evil and full of fatal poison.
from the same mouth come both blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be this way. from the same mouth come both blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be this way.
3:11 μήτι πηγὴ ἐκ τῆς αὐτῆς ὀπῆς βρύει τὸ γλυκὺ καὶ τὸ πικρόν; 11 μήτι πηγὴ ἐκ τῆς αὐτῆς ὀπῆς βρύει τὸ γλυκὺ καὶ τὸ πικρόν;
A fountain doesn’t pour out from the same opening both fresh and bitter water, does it? A fountain doesn’t pour out from the same opening both fresh and bitter water, does it?
3:12 μὴ δύναται, ἀδελφοί μου, συκῆ ἐλαίας ποιῆσαι ἄμπελος σῦκα;
12 μὴ δύναται, ἀδελφοί μου, συκῆ ἐλαίας ποιῆσαι, ἄμπελος σῦκα;
A fig tree, my brothers, is not able to produce olives, or a vine figs, is it? Nor can salt water produce fresh. A fig tree, my brothers, is not able to produce olives, or a vine figs, is it? Thus no spring can produce both salt water and fresh.

Wisdom from Above

3:13 Τίς σοφὸς καὶ ἐπιστήμων ἐν ὑμῖν;
13 Τίς σοφὸς καὶ ἐπιστήμων ἐν ὑμῖν;
Who is wise and intelligent among you? Let him show by his good behaviour his works in the humility of wisdom. Who is wise and intelligent among you? Let him show by his good behaviour his works in the humility of wisdom.
But if you have bitter jealousy and strife in your heart, stop boasting and stop lying against the truth. But if you have bitter jealousy and strife in your heart, stop boasting and stop lying against the truth.
This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, sensual, demonic. This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, sensual, demonic.
For where jealousy and strife exist, there is instability and every wicked thing. For where jealousy and strife exist, there is instability and every wicked thing.
But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, compliant, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial, without hypocrisy. But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, compliant, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial, and without hypocrisy.
And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace. And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.
