The Great Salvation
For this reason it is necessary for us to pay much more attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away. | For this reason it is necessary for us to pay much more attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away. |
For if the word spoken through angels became unalterable, and every transgression and disobedience received an equitable penalty, | For if the word spoken through angels became unalterable, and every transgression and disobedience received an equitable penalty, |
how will we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, after it was at the first spoken through the Lord, it was confirmed to us by those who heard, | how will we escape if we neglect so great a salvation? After it was at the first spoken through the Lord, it was confirmed to us by those who heard, |
God co-testifying, both by signs and wonders and by various miracles and by allotment of the Holy Spirit according to his own will. | God co-testifying, both by signs and wonders and by various miracles and by allotment of the Holy Spirit according to his own will. |
The Pioneer of Salvation
For he didn’t subject to angels the inhabited world about to come, concerning which we are speaking. | For he didn’t subject to angels the inhabited world about to come, concerning which we are speaking. |
But someone has testified somewhere, saying, “What is man, that you remember him, or the son of man, that you visit him? | But someone has testified somewhere, saying, “What is man, that you remember him, or the son of man, that you visit him? |
You have made him for a little while lower than the angels; you have crowned him with glory and honour. | You have made him for a little while lower than the angels; you have crowned him with glory and honour, and put him over the works of your hands; |
τῶν
You have put all things in subjection under his feet.”[1] For in subjecting all things to him, he left nothing that is not subject to him. But now we don’t yet see all things subjected to him. | You have put all things in subjection under his feet.”[1] For in subjecting all things to him, he left nothing that is not subject to him. But now we don’t yet see all things subjected to him. |
But we see Jesus who was made for a little while lower than the angels, because of the suffering of death crowned with glory and honour, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. | But we see Jesus who was made for a little while lower than the angels, because of the suffering of death crowned with glory and honour, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. |
For it was fitting for him, for whom are all things, and through whom are all things, in leading many sons to glory, to perfect the author of their salvation through sufferings. | For it was fitting for him, for whom are all things, and through whom are all things, in leading many sons to glory, to perfect the author of their salvation through sufferings. |
For both he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified are all from one Father; for which reason he is not ashamed to call them brothers, | For both he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified are all from one Father; for which reason he is not ashamed to call them brothers, |
saying, “I will proclaim your name to my brothers, in the midst of the church I will sing unto you.”[2] | saying, “I will proclaim your name to my brothers, in the midst of the church I will sing unto you.”[2] |
And again, “I will be confident in him.”[3] And again, “Look, I and the children whom God gave to me.”[4] | And again, “I will be confident in him.”[3] And again, “Look, I and the children whom God gave to me.”[4] |
Therefore, since the children have shared in blood and flesh, he himself likewise also shared of them, that through death he might make powerless the one who had the dominion of death, that is, the devil, | Therefore, since the children have shared in flesh and blood, he himself likewise also shared of them, that through death he might make powerless the one who had the dominion of death, that is, the devil, |
and might free those who through fear of death were subject to slavery all their lives. | and might free those who through fear of death were subject to slavery all their lives. |
For of course he doesn’t take hold of angels, but he takes hold of the descendant of Abraham. | For of course he doesn’t take hold of angels, but he takes hold of the descendant of Abraham. |
Therefore, he was obliged to be made like his brothers in all things, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. | Therefore, he was obliged to be made like his brothers in all things, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. |
For after he was tempted in what he suffered, he is able to help those who are tempted. | For after he was tempted in what he suffered, he is able to help those who are tempted. |
