After welcoming in God your much loved name, which you acquired by your just nature according to faith and love in Christ Jesus our Saviour, being imitators of God, after stirring up with the blood of God, you have perfectly fulfilled your related work;

since then that in God's name I have received your whole congregation in the person of Onesimus, in whom is indescribable love, according to Jesus Christ and that you all may be like him; for blessed is He who granted to you, worthy as you are, to have such a bishop.

But concerning my co-servant Burrhus, who by the will of God is your deacon blessed in everything, I pray that he may remain with me to your honour and your bishop's. Yes, and Crocus also, who is worthy of God and of you, whom I received as an example of your love for me, has refreshed me in all ways – even so may the Father of Jesus Christ refresh him – together with Onesimus and Burrhus and Euplus and Fronto; in whom I saw all of you according to love.

May I have joy of you always, if, that is, I am worthy of it. It is therefore proper for you in every way to glorify Jesus Christ who glorified you; that being perfectly joined together in one submission, submitting yourselves to your bishop and presbytery, you may be sanctified in everything.

I do not command you, as though I were someone important. For even though I am in chains for the sake of the Name, I am not yet mature in Jesus Christ. For now am I beginning to be a disciple; and I speak to you as to my co-studens. For I should be trained by you for the application in faith, in admonition, in endurance, in long-suffering.

But, since love does not allow me to be silent concerning you, therefore I took the initiative to encourage you, that you run in harmony with the mind of God; for Jesus Christ also, our inseparable life, is the mind of the Father, even as the bishops that are appointed in the ends of the world are in the mind of Jesus Christ.

Chapter 4

So then it is proper for you to run in harmony with the mind of the bishop; which thing you also do. For your honourable presbytery, which is worthy of God, is attuned to the bishop, just as strings to a lyre. Therefore in your oneness of mind and harmonious love Jesus Christ is sung.

And each man of you, form yourselves into a chorus, that being harmonious in concord and taking the key note of God you may in unison sing with one voice through Jesus Christ unto the Father, that He may both hear you and acknowledge you by your good deeds to be members of His Son. It is therefore profitable for you to be in blameless unity, that you may also be partakers of God always.

|
For if I in a short time had such intimacy with your bishop, which was not after the manner of men but in the Spirit, how much more do I congratulate you who are closely joined with him as the Church is with Jesus Christ and as Jesus Christ is with the Father, that all things may be harmonious in unity?

ἐπισκόπου

ἐκκλησίας;
|
Let no man be deceived. If anyone is not within the precinct of the altar, he lacks the bread of God. For, if the prayer of one and another has so great force, how much more is that of the bishop and of the whole Church?

Whoever therefore does not come to the congregation, he therefore shows his pride and has separated himself; for it is written, “God resists the proud”(Prov. 3:34). Let us therefore be careful not to resist the bishop, that we may be obedient to God.

Chapter 6

δέχεσθαι,
ὡς
αὐτὸν
τὸν
πέμψαντα.

οὖν
ἐπίσκοπον
δῆλον
ὅτι
ὡς
αὐτὸν
κύριον
δεῖ
προσβλέπειν.

And as long as a person sees that his bishop is silent, the more he should fear him. For everyone whom the Master of the household sends to manage his own house, we must welcome as we would the one who sent him. Obviously therefore we should regard the bishop as the Lord Himself.
|

Now Onesimus himself highly praises your orderly conduct in God, that you live according to truth, and that no heresy has a home among you. In fact, you do not so much as listen to anyone if he speak of anything else except the truth concerning Jesus Christ.
|
Chapter 7

ὑμᾶς
φυλάσσεσθαι

δυσθεραπεύτους.

For some have been accustomed to carry about the Name deceitfully and wickedly, while they do certain other things unworthy of God. These men you must shun, as wild beasts; for they are mad dogs, biting by stealth; against whom you must be on your guard, for they are hard to cure.
|

There is only one physician, who is of flesh and of spirit, born and unborn, God in man, true Life in death, from Mary and from God, first suffering and then unsuffering, Jesus Christ our Lord.

Chapter 8

βασανίσαι,

Let no one therefore deceive you, just as you are not deceived, seeing that you belong entirely to God.
For when no contention capable to torment you is established in you, then you truly live according to God.
I devote myself for you Ephesians, and I dedicate myself as an offering for the church which is famous forever.

Those who are of the flesh cannot do the things of the Spirit, neither can they who are of the Spirit do the things of the flesh; just as faith cannot do the things of unfaithfulness, nor unfaithfulness the things of faith.
No, even those things which you do according to the flesh are spiritual; for you do all things in Jesus Christ.

But I have learned that certain persons passed through you from there, bringing evil doctrine; whom you didn't permit to sow seed in you, for you shut your ears, so that you might not receive the seed sown by them; because you are stones of a temple, which were prepared beforehand for the building of God the Father, being lifted up to the heights through the crane of Jesus Christ, which is the Cross, and using for a rope the Holy Spirit; while your faith is your lifting device, and love is the way that leads up to God.

So then you are all co-travellers, God-bearers and temple-bearers, Christ-bearers, holiness-bearers, according to all things that have been adorned with the commandments of Jesus Christ.
With whom I also celebrate; since I am worthy, I write to speak to you and to rejoice with you because you don't love human life but only God.

Chapter 10

ἐκ

ἔργων

μαθητευθῆναι.

Pray also without ceasing for the rest of mankind (for there is in them a hope of repentance), that they may find God. Therefore permit them to take lessons at least from your works.
|

Toward their wrath, be fair; toward their boasting words, be humble; toward their slumbers, give your prayers; toward their errors, be “stedfast in the faith”; toward their savageness, be civilized. Don't be eager to imitate them.
|

By our forbearance, let us show ourselves as their brothers; and let us be eager to be imitators of the Lord, who be more wronged, who be more cheated, who be rejected in order that no weed of the devil may be found in you; but in all purity and self-control you may abide in Jesus Christ physically and spiritually.

Chapter 11

These are the last times. Finally, let us be reverent; let us respect the patience of God, lest it turn into a judgment against us. For let us either fear the wrath which is to come or let us love the grace which now is – the one or the other; provided only that we be found in Christ Jesus unto true life.

Χριστιανῶν,

συνῄνεσαν

δυνάμει

Let nothing appeal to you apart from Him, in whom I carry about my chains (i.e., my spiritual pearls) in which I would hope to rise again through your prayer. May I always share in them, that I may be found in the company of those Christians of Ephesus who have always had the one mind with the Apostles in the power of Jesus Christ.

Chapter 12

|
I know who I am and to whom I write. I am a convict. You have received mercy. I am in danger, you are secure.

12:2 πάροδός

εἰς
θεὸν
ἀναιρουμένων,
Παύλου
συμμύσται
τοῦ
ἡγιασμένου,
τοῦ
μεμαρτυρημένον,
ἀξιομακαρίστον,
οὗ
γένοιτό
μοι
ὑπὸ
τὰ
ἴχνη
εὑρεθῆναι,
ὅταν
θεοῦ
ἐπιτύχω,
ὃς
ἐν
πάσῃ
ἐπιστολῇ
μνημονεύει
ὑμῶν

|
You are the highway for those who are on their way to die for God. You are co-initiates in the mysteries with Paul, who was sanctified, who obtained a good report, who is worthy of blessing; may I be found in his footsteps, when I shall attain unto God; who in every letter makes mention of you in Christ Jesus.

ζωῆς

ἀρχὴ
μὲν
πίστις,
τέλος
δὲ
ἀγάπη.
τὰ
δὲ
δύο
ἐν
ἑνότητι
γενόμενα
θεός
ἐστιν,
τὰ
δὲ
ἄλλα
πάντα
εἰς
καλοκἀγαθίαν
ἀκόλουθά
ἐστιν.

None of these things is escapes you, if you have maturity in your faith and love toward Jesus Christ, for these are the beginning and end of life. Faith is the beginning and love is the end; and the two being found in unity are God, while all other things follow in their excellence.

ἐπαγγελλόμενος
ἁμαρτάνει,
οὐδὲ
ἀγάπην
κεκτημένος
μισεῖ.
φανερὸν
τὸ
δένδρον
ἀπὸ
τοῦ
καρποῦ
αὐτοῦ.
οὕτως
οἱ
ἐπαγγελλόμενοι
Χριστοῦ
εἶναι
δι᾿
ὧν
πράσσουσιν
ὀφθήσονται.
οὐ
γὰρ
νῦν
ἐπαγγελίας
τὸ
ἔργον,
ἀλλ᾿
ἐν
δυνάμει
πίστεως
ἐάν
τις
εὑρεθῇ
εἰς
τέλος.
|
No one professing faith sins, and no one possessing love hates. “The tree is known by its fruit” (see Matt. 12:33). So those who proclaim to be Christ's shall be seen by their actions. For the work is not something proclaimed now, but if someone is found to be in the power of faith unto the end.

Chapter 15

σιωπᾶν

ἢ
λαλοῦντα
μὴ
εἶναι.
καλὸν
τὸ
διδάσκειν,
ἐὰν
ὁ
λέγων
ποιῇ.
εἷς
οὖν
διδάσκαλος,
ὃς
εἶπεν,
καὶ
ἐγένετο·
καὶ
ἃ
σιγῶν
δὲ
πεποίηκεν
ἄξια
τοῦ
πατρός
ἐστιν.

It is better to keep silent and to be a Christian, than to talk and not to be one.
It is a good thing to teach, if the speaker practises what he teaches. Now there is one teacher, who “spoke and it happened” (Ps. 33:9); yes and even the things which He has done in silence are worthy of the Father.

σιγᾷ
γινώσκηται.

He who truly possesses the word of Jesus is able also to listen to His silence, in order that he may be mature; that through his speech he may act and through his silence he may be known.

τὰ
κρυπτὰ
ἡμῶν
ἐγγὺς
αὐτῷ
ἐστιν,
πάντα
οὖν
ποιῶμεν
ὡς

ἡμῖν
κατοικοῦντος,
ἵνα
ὦμεν
αὐτοῦ
ναοὶ
καὶ
αὐτὸς
ἐν
ἡμῖν
θεὸς
ἡμῶν·
ὅπερ
καὶ
ἔστιν
καὶ
φανήσεται
πρὸ
προσώπου
ἡμῶν,
ἐξ
ὧν
δικαίως
ἀγαπῶμεν
αὐτόν.

Nothing is hidden from the Lord, but even our secrets are close to Him. Let us therefore do all things with the knowledge that He dwells in us, to the end that we may be His temples and He Himself may be in us as our God. This is a fact, and it will also be made clear in our sight by the love which we rightly have for Him.

Chapter 16

πλανᾶσθε,
ἀδελφοί
μου·
οἱ
οἰκοφθόροι
βασιλείαν
θεοῦ
οὐ
κληρονομήσουσιν.
|
Don't be deceived, my brothers. Corrupters of families “will not inherit the kingdom of God” (see 1Cor. 6:9-10).

οἱ
κατὰ
σάρκα
ταῦτα
πράσσοντες
ἀπέθανον,
πόσῳ
μᾶλλον,
ἐὰν
πίστιν
θεοῦ
ἐν
κακῇ
διδασκαλίᾳ
φθείρῃ,
ὑπὲρ
ἧς
Ἰησοῦς
Χριστὸς
ἐσταυρώθη;
ὁ
τοιοῦτος
ῥυπαρὸς
γενόμενος,
εἰς
τὸ
πῦρ
τὸ
ἄσβεστον
χωρήσει,
ὁμοίως
καὶ
ὁ
ἀκούων
αὐτοῦ.

If then those who do these things according to the flesh are put to death, how much more if a someone through evil teaching corrupts the faith of God for which Jesus Christ was crucified? Such a one, having defiled himself, will go into the unquenchable fire; and likewise those who listen to him.

Chapter 17

ἀφθαρσίαν.

διδασκαλίας
τοῦ
ἄρχοντος

αἰῶνος
τούτου,

αἰχμαλωτίσῃ
ὑμᾶς
ἐκ
τοῦ
προκειμένου
ζῆν.

Because of this, the Lord received myrrh ointment on His head, in order that He might breathe incorruptibility upon the Church. Don't be anointed with the stench of the teaching of the ruler of this age, lest you are captured away from the prophecy of life.

And why don't we all become intelligent, receiving the knowledge of God, which is Jesus Christ? Why do we perish foolishly, not knowing the gift of grace which the Lord has truly sent?

The virginity of Mary and her child birthing were hidden from the prince of this age; likewise also the death of the Lord; three mysteries to be proclaimed aloud – the which were accomplished in the silence of God.

How then were they revealed to the ages?
A star shone in the sky above all the stars;
and its light was inexpressible, and its strangeness caused amazement;
and all the rest of the constellations along with the sun and moon formed into a chorus around that star;
but the star itself far outshone them all;
and there was perplexity about the origin of this strange appearance
which was so unlike them.

From which all magic and every spell was dissolved, the ignorance of wickedness vanished away, the ancient kingdom was pulled down, when God appeared in the form of man unto newness of eternal life;
and what had been prepared in the counsels of God began to take effect.
From here all things were set in motion , because the abolishing of death was being practised.

If, through your prayer, Jesus Christ should count me worthy, and if it should be his will, in my second letter, which I intend to write to you, I will explain further to you which I began outlining about the new man, Jesus Christ, in His faith and in His love, in His suffering and resurrection;

especially if the Lord reveals anything to me. All of you in common, man by man together, in grace, by name, in one faith, and in one Jesus Christ, who according to the flesh was of David's race, who is Son of Man and Son of God, so that you may obey the bishop and presbytery without distraction of mind; breaking one bread, which is the medicine of immortality and the antidote that we take in order not to die but to live forever in Jesus Christ.

I am devoted to you and to those whom for the honour of God you sent to Smyrna; from where I am writing to you with thanksgiving to the Lord, and love for Polycarp as I have for you also. Remember me, even as Jesus Christ remembers you.

Pray for the church which is in Syria, from which I am being led tied up to Rome; I who am the very last of the faithful there; just as I was counted worthy to be found unto the honour of God. Farewell in God the Father and in Jesus Christ our common hope.
