(LXX 37)

A Psalm of David, to bring to remembrance.

A Psalm ascribed to David for remembrance concerning Sabbath. A Psalm ascribed to David for remembrance concerning Sabbath.

1 Oh Yahweh, don’t rebuke me in your wrath; neither chasten me in your hot displeasure.

1 Oh Lord, don’t rebuke me in your wrath or discipline me in your anger, 1 Oh Lord, don’t rebuke me in your wrath or discipline me in your anger,

2 For your arrows stick fast in me, and your hand presses me sore.

2 because your arrows were stuck in me and you clamped your hand on me. 2 because your arrows were stuck in me and you clamped your hand on me.

3 There is no soundness in my flesh because of your anger; neither is there any rest in my bones because of my sin.

3 There is no health in my flesh from before your anger; there is no peace for my bones from before my sins, 3 There is no health in my flesh from before your anger; there is no peace for my bones from before my sins,

4 For my iniquities are gone over my head; as a heavy burden they are too heavy for me.

4 because my lawlessnesses rose above my head; like a heavy burden they weighed on me. 4 because my lawlessnesses rose above my head; like a heavy burden they weighed on me.

5 My wounds stink and are corrupt because of my foolishness.

5 My wounds stank and festered from before my foolishness; 5 My wounds stank and festered from before my foolishness;

6 I am troubled; I am bowed down greatly; I go mourning all the day long.

6 I was miserable and weighed down completely; all day long I was walking while looking sullen, 6 I was miserable and weighed down completely; all day long I was walking while looking sullen,

7 For my loins are filled with a loathsome disease; and there is no soundness in my flesh.

7 because my soul was filled with derision and there is no healing in my flesh. 7 because my loins were filled with mockery and there is no healing in my flesh.

8 I am feeble and sore broken; I have roared by reason of the unrest of my heart.

8 I was afflicted and humiliated greatly; I kept howling from the groaning of my heart. 8 I was afflicted and humiliated greatly; I kept howling from the groaning of my heart.

9 Lord, all my desire is before you; and my groaning is not hid from you.

9 Oh Lord, all my desire is before you, and my groaning was not hidden from you. 9 Oh Lord, all my desire is before you, and my groaning was not hidden from you.

10 My heart pants, my strength fails me; as for the light of my eyes, it also is gone from me.

10 My heart was troubled, my strength left me; and the light of my eyes, it also is not with me. 10 My heart was troubled, my strength left me; and the light of my eyes, it also is not with me.

11 My lovers and my friends stand aloof from my sore; and my kinsmen stand afar off.

11 My friends and my neighbours approached opposite me and stood, and my close relative stood far off. 11 My friends and my neighbours approached opposite me and stood, and my close relative stood far off.

12 They also who seek after my life lay snares for me; and they who seek my hurt speak mischievous things, and imagine deceits all the day long.

12 And those who seek my soul used violence, and those who seek my hurt spoke vanities, and they made speeches about deceits all day long. 12 And those who seek my soul used violence, and those who seek my hurt spoke vanities, and they made speeches about deceits all day long.

13 But I, as a deaf man, didn’t hear; and I was as a dumb man who doesn’t open his mouth.

13 But as for me, I, am like the deaf, they were not hearing, and like a mute man not opening his mouth. 13 But as for me, I, am like the deaf, they were not hearing, and like a mute man not opening his mouth.

14 Thus I was as a man who doesn’t hear, and in whose mouth are no reproofs.

14 And I became like a man who doesn’t hear and who doesn’t have reproofs in his mouth, 14 And I became like a man who doesn’t hear and who doesn’t have reproofs in his mouth,

15 For in you, Oh Yahweh, do I hope; you will hear, Oh Lord my God.

15 because I have confidence in you, Oh Lord; you will listen, Oh my God. 15 because I have confidence in you, Oh Lord; you will listen, Oh my Lord God.

16 For I said, Hear me, lest otherwise they should rejoice over me; when my foot slips, they magnify themselves against me.

16 because I said,
Only let not my enemies be happy over me, and when my feet were shaken, they bragged against me;
16 because I said,
Only let not my enemies be happy over me, and when my feet were shaken, they bragged against me;

17 For I am ready to halt, and my sorrow is continually before me.

17 because I am prepared for whips, and my pain is always before me; 17 because I am prepared for whips, and my pain is always before me;

18 For I will declare my iniquity; I will be sorry for my sin.

18 because I will report my lawlessness, and I will show anxiety over my sin. 18 because I will report my lawlessness, and I will show anxiety over my sin.

19 But my enemies are lively, and they are strong; and they who hate me wrongfully are multiplied.

19 But my enemies are alive and are stronger than I, and those who hate me unjustly have multiplied. 19 But my enemies are alive and are stronger than I, and those who hate me unjustly have multiplied.

20 They also who render evil for good are my adversaries; because I follow the thing that is good.

20 Those who repay evil for good would slander me, since I would follow after righteousness, [and they cast off me, the beloved, like a sickening corpse.] 20 Those who repay evil for good would slander me, since I would follow after goodness.

21 Don’t forsake me, Oh Yahweh; Oh my God, don’t be far from me.

21 Don’t forsake me, Oh Lord my God, don’t stand away from me; 21 Don’t forsake me, Oh Lord my God, don’t stand away from me;

22 Make haste to help me, Oh Lord my salvation.

22 attend to my help, Oh Lord of my salvation. 22 attend to my help, Oh Lord of my salvation.
