Chapter 19

NASTextRec
and they kept coming up to him and saying, “Hail, Oh King of the Jews!” and kept giving him slaps in the face. and they kept saying, “Hail, Oh King of the Jews!” and kept giving him slaps in the face.
Pilate came outside again and said to them, “Look, I am bringing him outside to you so that you may know that I find nothing guilty in him.” Then Pilate came outside again and said to them, “Look, I am bringing him outside to you so that you may know that I find nothing guilty in him.”
Then Jesus came out, wearing the victor’s wreath of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, “Look, the man!” Then Jesus came out, wearing the victor’s wreath of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, “Look, the man!”
So when the chief priests and the officers saw him, they cried out saying, “Crucify, crucify!” Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and crucify him, for I don’t find guilt in him.” So when the chief priests and the officers saw him, they cried out saying, “Crucify, crucify!” Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and crucify him, for I don’t find guilt in him.”
The Jews answered him, “We have a Torah, and by that Torah he ought to die because he made himself out to be the Son of God.” The Jews answered him, “We have a Torah, and by our Torah he ought to die because he made himself out to be the Son of God.”
Therefore when Pilate heard this statement, he was more afraid; Therefore when Pilate heard this statement, he was more afraid;
19:9 καὶ εἰσῆλθεν εἰς τὸ πραιτώριον πάλιν καὶ λέγει τῷ Ἰησοῦ, πόθεν εἶ σύ;
9 καὶ εἰσῆλθεν εἰς τὸ πραιτώριον πάλιν, καὶ λέγει τῷ Ἰησοῦ, πόθεν εἶ σύ;
and he entered into the Praetorium again and said to Jesus, “Where are you from?” But Jesus didn’t give him an answer. and he entered into the Praetorium again and said to Jesus, “Where are you from?” But Jesus didn’t give him an answer.
19:10 λέγει οὖν αὐτῷ Πιλᾶτος, ἐμοὶ οὐ λαλεῖς;
οὐκ οἶδας ὅτι ἐξουσίαν ἔχω ἀπολῦσαί σε καὶ ἐξουσίαν ἔχω σταυρῶσαί σε;
10 λέγει οὖν αὐτῷ Πιλάτος, ἐμοὶ οὐ λαλεῖς;
οὐκ οἶδας ὅτι ἐξουσίαν ἔχω σταυρῶσαί σε, καὶ ἐξουσίαν ἔχω ἀπολῦσαί σε;
So Pilate said to him, “Don’t you speak to me? Don’t you know that I have authority to release you, and I have authority to crucify you?” So Pilate said to him, “Don’t you speak to me? Don’t you know that I have authority to release you, and I have authority to crucify you?”
Jesus answered [him], “You could have no authority over me, unless it had been given you from above; for this reason he who delivered me to you has the greater sin.” Jesus answered, “You could have no authority over me, unless it had been given you from above; for this reason he who delivered me to you has the greater sin.”
From this Pilate tried to release him, but the Jews cried out saying, “If you release this one, you are no friend of Caesar; everyone who makes himself out to be a king opposes Caesar.” From this Pilate tried to release him, but the Jews cried out saying, “If you release this one, you are no friend of Caesar; everyone who makes himself out to be a king opposes Caesar.”
Therefore when Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus outside, and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called The Pavement, but in Hebrew, Gabbatha. Therefore when Pilate heard this word, he brought Jesus outside, and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called The Pavement, but in Hebrew, Gabbatha.
Now it was the day of preparation for the Passover; it was about the sixth hour.[1] And he said to the Jews, “Look, your King!” Now it was the day of preparation for the Passover; it was about the sixth hour.[1] And he said to the Jews, “Look, your King!”
λέγει αὐτοῖς Πιλᾶτος, τὸν βασιλέα ὑμῶν σταυρώσω;
λέγει αὐτοῖς Πιλάτος, τὸν βασιλέα ὑμῶν σταυρώσω;
So they cried out, “Take him away, take him away, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We don’t have a king except Caesar.” So they cried out, “Take him away, take him away, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We don’t have a king except Caesar.”
So he then handed him over that they he might be crucified. Then they received Jesus, So he then handed him over that they he might be crucified. Then they received Jesus and led him away,
And carrying his cross, he went out into the place called Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha. And carrying his cross, he went out into the place called Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha.
where they crucified him, and with him two others, on this side and that side, and Jesus in between. where they crucified him, and with him two others, on this side and that side, and Jesus in between.
Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It was written, “Jesus the Nazarene, the king of the Jews.” Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It was written, “Jesus the Nazarene, the king of the Jews.”
Therefore many of the Jews read this inscription, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, Latin and Greek. Therefore many of the Jews read this inscription, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, Greek and Latin.
Then the chief priests of the Jews kept saying to Pilate, “Don’t write, ‘The King of the Jews’; but that he said, ‘I am King of the Jews.’” Then the chief priests of the Jews kept saying to Pilate, “Don’t write, ‘The King of the Jews’; but that he said, ‘I am King of the Jews.’”
Pilate answered, “What I have written I have written.” Pilate answered, “What I have written I have written.”
Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his clothes and made four parts, a part for each soldier and also the tunic; now the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from the top. Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his clothes and made four parts, a part for each soldier and also the tunic; now the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from the top.
So they said to one another, “Let us not split it, but cast lots, concerning whose it shall be”; that it might fulfill the scripture [which says]: “They divided my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.”[2]. Then the soldiers did these things. So they said to one another, “Let us not split it, but cast lots, concerning whose it shall be”; that it might fulfill the scripture which says: “They divided my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.”[2]. Then the soldiers did these things.
But standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Klōpas, and Mary Magdalēnē. But standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Klōpas, and Mary Magdalēnē.
When Jesus then saw his mother, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, “Woman, look, your son!” When Jesus then saw his mother, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, “Woman, look, your son!”
Then he said to the disciple, “Look, your mother!” From that hour the disciple took her into his own home. Then he said to the disciple, “Look, your mother!” From that hour the disciple took her into his own home.
After this, knowing that all things had already been accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.” After this, knowing that all things had already been accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.”
A container full of weak wine was lying there; so they put a sponge full of the weak wine upon a hyssop branch and presented it to his mouth. Then a container full of weak wine was lying there; so they put a sponge full of the weak wine upon a hyssop branch and presented it to his mouth.
Therefore when Jesus had received the weak wine, he said, “It is finished!” And he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. Therefore when Jesus had received the weak wine, he said, “It is finished!” And he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
Then the Jews, because it was the preparation day, so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the sabbath (for that sabbath was a great day), asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. Then the Jews, because it was the preparation day, so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the sabbath (for that sabbath was a great day), asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.
So the soldiers came, and broke the legs of the first man and of the other who was crucified with him; So the soldiers came, and broke the legs of the first man and of the other who was crucified with him;
but coming to Jesus, when they saw that he was already dead, they didn’t break his legs. but coming to Jesus, when they saw that he was already dead, they didn’t break his legs.
But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out. But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out.
And he who has seen this has testified, and his testimony is true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you also may believe. And he who has seen this has testified, and his testimony is true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you may believe.
For these things came to pass in order that the scripture might be fulfilled, “Not a bone of his shall be broken.”[3] For these things came to pass in order that the scripture might be fulfilled, “Not a bone of his shall be broken.”[3]
And again another Scripture says, “They shall look on him whom they pierced.”[4] And again another Scripture says, “They shall look on him whom they pierced.”[4]
After these things Jōsēph from Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but a secret one for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate permitted. So he came and took away his body. After these things Jōsēph from Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but a secret one for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate permitted. So he came and took away the body of Jesus.
Nicodēmus, who had first come to him by night, also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred (Rōman) pounds weight.[5] Nicodēmus, who had first come to Jesus by night, also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred (Rōman) pounds weight.[5]
Now there was a garden in the place where he was crucified, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. Now there was a garden in the place where he was crucified, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid.
Therefore because of the Jewish preparation day, since the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there. Therefore because of the Jewish preparation day, since the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.
